BONSAI, CAUDICIFORM AND MINIATURE SPECIMENS

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

In order to really appreciate the plants shown here, one must understand how they came about and what it took to create these specimens shown here.  The goal was to create plants that were miniature in size.  A given plant was placed into a container, often using an attractive ceramic pot.  Sometimes unusual species were used, other times not.  But, the goal was to restrict growth and create an unusual appearing plant over time.  Sometimes they develop into a mature looking tree that is just smaller than when it is grown in a normal nursery pot.  Often they take on an unusual appearance.  They never get large.  Some types of species do this better than others.

Over time such plants often develop fat, contorted and unusually shaped trunks.  They require continual, manicure type pruning.  The plant is kept small but the trunk grows into a contorted, irregular shape.  This is one of the main appealing things about these plants.  Almost all of these are an estimated 30 years old.  It takes this long to develop these unusually shape trunks.  Some people love them.  Some don't see the point.  But, all will usually comment that they are "different" and interesting.

They are never meant to be planted into the garden - rather their life will be in a small container.  They could be put in the ground, but they would not appear the same.  In pots, they usually become plants scattered on a deck on in a patio.  Most take sun or part sun.  Often leaves will defoliate during the winter as seen below.  These pictures were taken in January.  In the spring, leaves will come forth.  Some species will blossom.  In terms of availability, it's near impossible to find plants like this for sale as they take too long to produce and they become favorites or "pets" of the grower.  Thus, they are coveted by the one that grows them.

I have made an attempt to obtain accurate species names on these plants.  This was through the help of others.  But, realize that our staff are not experts on these types of plants.  We do, however, appreciate and like them.   Remember that all of these plants are alive and, on those with no leaves, will form a crop of leaves by late February to March.  They require little water.

Many of the plants below are rare South African species.  Obviously, the worst time to take these pictures would be in winter.  But, we got this collection in during January and this is how they look at this time of year.
