Cold Hardiness:

About 26ยบ F.

Trunk Type:

Smooth woody trunk, initially green but turning to wood color with time. This species has a very prominent crown shaft, but it is not as fat as the R. sapida.

Leaf Type:

Pinnate, about 8-10 feet long with some bare petiole (R. sapida has minimal or no bare petiole), a slight recurve to the leaf, a somewhat brownish color to the petiole, and a more relaxed appearance to the leaf (compared to R. sapida). .

Speed of growth:

Medium growth, sometimes slow when small.

About 30-40 feet.

Soil requirements:

Rich, well draining.

Sun requirements:

Inland, filtered or limited sun. Coastal half day sun or possibly full sun in some areas. It is its pretties in morning sun. This species likes to "grow into the sun", rather than start in the sun.

General Description:

A very attractive medium to large palm that will eventually be a canopy former. However, because of its somewhat slow growth rate, it is not a quick canopy former. It is very beautiful and graceful. Sets seed easily. People love the prominent crownshaft and its overall shape. To tell it from R. sapida, look for some bare petiole, a slight recurve, and a smaller thickness of the crown shaft.

Further Data:

The Rhapalostylis sapida is a stiffer appearing palm with a more "V-shaped" crown. A similar "species" known as "Rhopalostylis cheesemanii" is similar to R. bauerii, perhaps a variety of bauerii.
