Locality:

Central and South America

Cold Hardiness:

Will tolerate upper 30ºs, F. Marginal for California. Best suited for semi-tropical or warmer areas.

Trunk Type:

Tall, clumping with spiny rings.

Leaf Type:

Plumose (furry/fringed appearance), pinnate (feather shaped) with spines, glaucous (silvery) underneath.

Suckering/Solitary:

Suckering (multiple trunks).

Maintenance:

In Southern California, a difficult palm to grow. Requires warmth, humidity and lots of water.

Medium

Height:

Twenty feet plus

Soil requirements:

High moisture, rich (organics and nutrients) soil.

Sun requirements:

Sun or strong filtered light

General Description:

Large, clumping, tropical, spiny palm. Is grown and harvested in South America for its sweet heart.

Further Data:

Some collectors have kept this species alive in warmer Southern California areas but it is a challenge; has edible fruit, palm heart and is harvested. See Spiny palms artilcle.
