A Brief Introduction of the Species

This is very small, sun loving green to gray-green cycad that never has a caudex over a foot tall.  Leaves are plumose/fluffy and up to three feet long.  It tolerates full sun along the coast.  Comments below include information on this species and how to grow it in the garden.

This species primarily from the Eastern Cape province, South Africa, though there is an isolated population of them in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.  In habitat these species are found in open grasslands and rocky hillsides.

Plant Size:  This is a dwarf species that rarely exceeds one meter in total height.  The mature leaf length on this species is about .6 meters and the stems typically under .3 meters (this species can have a partially subterranean trunk).

Other Characteristics:  This is a beautiful dwarf species.  The leaves tend to be plumose and upright.  Leaflet color can vary from a olive green to a dark green, with yellow petioles on older growth.  Newer leaves have fuzzy (tomentose) petioles.  The leaflets have serration to them, but this species for the most part is unarmed.  Female cones are a greenish yellow and male cones are green.

Culture:  This species is well adapted to sun, but will require protection in desert areas.  E. caffer needs an open, porous soil that drains well.

Landscape Usage:  As this species is a dwarf, it is fairly adaptable to most gardens.  It is small, but is still showy and attractive.  It can work well along the edges of plantings, in gardens with limited space or in gardens with smaller species.  It can also be used to accent larger plants in the garden as well (provided you still give sun to it).  Another advantage of this plant is that it mixes well with most styles of gardening (as do many cycads).

Availability:  We typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to coning sized specimens.  At any given time we should have some of this species available.  The sizes from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered.  Larger plants can be delivered by truck.

Pricing:  Encephalartos caffer is a rare species and not the cheapest.  But, we offer smaller, more affordable plants.  Examples of prices are listed below.
