A Brief Introduction of the Species

This South African cycad is slow growing in pots, faster in the ground.  It can get up to about ten feet of trunk.  Leaf color varies from blue to green - more likely blue in full, hot sun.  The leaves have a nice curve in them with the ends pointing downwards.  This species likes heat and sun.  Read below for more information on this species.

Locality:  This species is endemic to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa.  These regions are arid and subject to semi-regular fires (evidenced by the scorched and blackened trunks).  Plants grow in sunny, hot grasslands where the steep terrain is composed of rocky soil and outcroppings.

Plant Size:  This species is small to medium sized.  Leaves are approximately one meter long.  Stems are stout and can get up to a height of  four meters over a few centuries.  E. friderici-guilielmi is primarily a solitary stemmed plant but can make some basal suckers.

Other Characteristics:    This is a beautiful, fine leafed and blue cycad.  They are moderate growers and are an easy size to manage in the garden.  The leaves are unarmed, and are not pokey.  This plant (as well as the other fine leafed Encephalartos) tend to be very cold hardy as well tolerant of heat.

Culture:  This plant prefers to be in the full sun, but can tolerate part day (3-5 hours) sun in coastal and inland areas.  For desert climates partial sun or filtered light would be ideal.  This cycad also needs a soil that drains well.  They can get into rot problems if the soil stays too moist.

Landscape Usage:  As this is not a large cycad, I would place it in the foreground of a planting.  It's beautiful leaves and full crown make it a very attractive garden addition.  Often times people will mound them (to avoid excessively wet soil) which helps to show-off or highlight the beauty of this cycad.

Availability:  We typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to an occasional larger plant acquired from a private collection.  .

Pricing:  Encephalartos fridereici-guilielmi is a rare species and not the cheapest.  But, we offer smaller, more affordable plants.  Being a good grower in the ground, one will have a good sized plant in not too many years.  Examples of prices are listed below.

Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi is a very slow growing species and seeds are seldom available.  So, large plants are only obtained through acquiring a private older collection or by growing from from seeds and waiting a decade or more.  On occasion, we do get in larger plants..

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
