ENCEPHALARTOS HEENANII

HEENAN'S CYCAD, THE WOOLY CYCAD

NATIVE TO SWAZILAND & SO AFRICA

BASKET SHAPED CROWN OF GREEN LEAVES

MEDIUM SIZED - SUPER RARE

by Phil & Jesse Bergman

A Brief Introduction of the Species

Introduction

This is another very rare species of South African cycad that is sought out by every serious collector around the world.  It is felt to be critically endangered in the wild.  This is a medium sized green species with trunks up to about eight feet mature.  The striking thing about this species are the leaves.  If one looks from afar, the crown of leaves is shaped like a basket - the leaves curl inwards toward the plant as they extend out.  This is a full sun species that doesn't like to be transplanted.  For more information, read below.

ENCEPHALARTOS HEENANII

Locality:
This species comes from the mountains in the north of Swaziland and in the Mpumalanga province in South Africa.  Populations have declined drastically over the past several decades to the point where the species on the veritable brink of extinction in habitat.  This species grows in mountain grasslands on steep rocky slopes and valleys.  The climate is hot and dry, and has little annual precipitation.

Plant Size:  This is a medium sized cycad.  Leaves are approximately a meter in length.  Stems can reach up to four meters after a few centuries (they are VERY slow).  This species is primarily solitary stemmed, but can produce basal suckers on older specimens.

Other Characteristics:    This species was named after Denis Heenan, who first recognized this as a distinct species.  This plant is also known as the "Wooly Cycad" as it produces a thick "wool" below the crown of leaves on the apical part of the caudex.  The leaflets also tend to be covered in tomentum (especially in newer leaves), and have a dark green upper margin and are a lighter green on the underside of the leaflets.  Another interesting characteristic of this plant is that its leaves are held in a very upright, "basket-like" configuration.  The leaflets are moderately armed with spines, but this isn't a terribly sharp or vicious species.

It is one of the most rare cycads there are.  Aside from habitat destruction and poaching another factor that stifles this plant is that they cone very sporadically and it is difficult to get and/or produce seed.  Additionally, though it can sucker, I have not observed that they produce many in cultivation.  Therefore any means of propagating the species is limited.  Female cones are an orange-brown and male cones range from a light green to a tan color.

Culture:  In coastal and inland areas this species wants to be in sun.  For desert areas, this species is better suited for partial sun to filtered light.  The species requires a soil that drains well.

Landscape Usage:  .This is a spectacular and unique plant.  It should be placed at the forefront of your garden or where smaller plants are decorations for it.  It should not be hidden, rather it should receive a place of distinction.

Availability:  We have only offered this extremely rare cycad perhaps ten times over the years.  With this said, plants do become available over time. Let us know if you seek this species and will notify you when one is available.

Pricing:
Encephalartos heenani is among the most expensive cycads in the world to obtain.  This is because of rarity and lack of availability of seeds.  If and when we acquire one for sale, we can quote pricing at that time.
