by Phil & Jesse Bergman

A Brief Introduction of the Species

Introduction

This difficult to obtain and intensely blue South African cycad is native to the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa.  It's leaves are keeled, mature size can be overhead and is known for its beautiful blue color.  It loves sun and heat.   It not uncommonly sets multiple pups at the base of the primary caudex.  Comments below include information on this species and how to grow it in the garden.

ENCEPHALARTOS PRINCEPS

Locality:
This species is from the Great Kei River, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.  This cycad is also sometimes called the "Kei" cycad, which is derived from it's locality.  In habitat, this species grows primarily in dolerite rock outcroppings and cliffs.  The climate is arid and plants are found in full sun exposures.

Plant Size:
The mature leaf length on this species is a meter or less.  Stem heights in cultivation rarely exceed one to one and a half meters.  Though, plants in the wild can reach heights of five meters after many centuries.  This species can be solitary, but it is more common to see this species produce basal suckers to a greater or lesser extent.

Other Characteristics:
One of the most striking characteristics of this plant is its lovely color (which can vary from a powdery silver to a turquoise blue).  This plant can be confused with E. lehmannii, but has a few differences.  The cones, stem size and angle of attachment are all different between these two species.  You can use these traits to help identify the difference.  This plant is it is an excellent grower, and is mostly unarmed.  The Female cones on this species are green and the male cones are a greenish/yellow and brown.

Culture:
In coastal and inland areas, this species wants to be grown in sun.  For desert areas, I recommend partial sun or filtered light.  E. princeps needs a soil that is quick draining and does not like to stay excessively wet.

Landscape Usage:
This is  a species that will work with most gardens.  Its color alone make it a stunning addition to both tropical and arid gardens.  When using in a more tropical setting, make sure to give it sun and adequate drainage.  This can be achieved by amending the soil and mounding when you plant.

Availability:  We typically can offer some sizes of this rare species.  Sometimes we'll have available larger plants.  You'll have to call for present availability.  Remember, not only is this a super rare species but it's very difficult to get seeds.

Pricing:  Encephalartos princeps, being a blue cycad species, is more expensive that most green cycads.  Examples of prices (when plants available) are listed below.

We are often in short supply on E. princeps.  This is a very popular and sought after cycad.  And, seeds are rarely available.  But, at any given time we have some for sale.  On large specimens, plants are priced by caudex size and height.  If you are interested in larger specimen Encephalartos or any size cycad, contact us and we can quote over the phone or by email.  We usually have in stock some spectacular coning sized blue cycads for sale.

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
