DIOON MEROLAE
SUPER SLOW GROWING MEXICAN CYCAD
LEAVES GRAY-GREEN
IN A LIFETIME, NEVER VERY BIG

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON PLANTS

This may prove to be the perfect cycad that one can buy when he wants an easy to grow sun species that, in his lifetime, will never get too big.  It's estimated that, in 40 years, you'll not get a trunk more than about 2 feet tall.  The old boxed nursery specimens shown here are "pre-cites" plants that were brought into the US in the early 1970's.  The plant below in La Habra was planted 30 years ago.  The last picture by JO shows a plant in the wild in Mexico that is estimated to be 1000 years old.  So, you get the point - slow growing!

We're offering 1 gallon at a great price.  These are nice plants with some size for the container.  They are 3 to 4 years old.  This species easily takes full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 20 degrees F.

REGULAR PRICE 1 GALLON $65
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON $40

Just mention this Special for your Discount.  We also have available 5g, 15g and boxes (very old) but these are not on sale right now.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII
EASTER CAPE BLUE CYCAD
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GET ONE ON SALE?
FULL SUN, NEVER VERY BIG

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON SIZE

One of the most popular blue cycads that we sell is this South African species from the Eastern Cape region (toward the ocean).  It is a very slow growing species that, in fifty years, is rarely over a height of five feet tall.  So, like the Dioon above, it'll always stay small and not obstruct a view.  The color is intensely blue.  I tell people it's like the color of a clear blue sky after you've thrown in a tiny bit of fog.  The other thing about this species, compared to E. horridus and trispinosus, is that it's much less spiny and very uniform in shape when mature.  Expect a trunk of no more than three feet and a crown width of no more than six feet.  It loves full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

REGULAR PRICE 1G SIZE $75
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE $52.50

Remember: You must mention this Blog Only Special for this discount when you buy.  This size is a piece of cake to ship.  We also have available 5g, 15g and boxes but these are not on sale right now.

ENCEPHALARTOS TRANSVENOSUS X WOODII
A HUGE CYCAD CROSSED WITH AN EXTINCT CYCAD
WILL MAKE POWERFUL AND IMPRESSIVE GREEN SPECIMEN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE OF THIS RARE HYBRID

This is one of the most rare and sought after hybrid cycads in the world.  Encephalartos woodii is extinct in the wild.  Only one original male plant is known to exist.  It is located in Durban Botanical Garden in South Africa.  Pups, over the years, have been removed.  Any plant in the world in any location came from this original male plant.  As we have no females, there has been intense work on using woodii pollen on other female Encephalartos cones.  Usually the female cone is Encephalartos natalensis.  But, the prettiest of all the hybrids is with E. transvenosus.  This is the cross I'm offering on sale here.

These are almost impossible to find!

It'll make a large cycad for sure.  I've seen pictures of E. transvenosus with over 20 feet of vertical trunk.  They look like a Canary Island Palm.  This cross will be quick growing, green in color and will have a huge crown of leaves.  Leaflets will be wide and have those noticeable wide barbs characteristic of E. woodii.  It'll take coastal full sun and tolerate down to about 22 degrees F.  The one gallon on special are three to four years old and very nice.

LIVISTONA NITIDA
AKA LIVISTONA CARNAVON GORGE
TALL PALM, THIN TRUNK
REMARKABLY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This tall and thin trunked fan palm comes from Central Queensland, Australia, where it is found among Eucalyptus forests in full sun.  Heights have been reported up to one hundred feet.  It has deeply divided leaves with thin leaflets.  These leaflets droop at their ends.  It does respond to ample water with faster growth.  Reports are that this species is quite cold hardy, into about the upper teens.  I've read anecdotes of this plant surviving in the Atlanta, GA area.  To we "old timers", this species was previously known as Livistona Carnavon Gorge, referring to its native locality.

REGULAR PRICE 5G SIZE $65
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G $50

Just mention this Blog Special at time of purchase to get this discount.  BTW, these 5g are nice size and chunky at the base.

BISMARCKIA SPECIES MAYOTTE ISLAND
GREEN BISMARCKIA
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

North of Madagascar is a chain of islands called the Comoros Islands.  This is the native habitat for this different species of Bismarckia.  It is different for several reasons.  First, it comes from a much more moist and windy locality than its blue cousin from Madagascar.  In the latter locality it is super hot and dry.  Secondly, the leaf color on this species is blue green, not blue as most of you are used to.  Third, the seeds have a different shape with flanges.  Lastly, there is a lot of red in this plant.  You see it on the spear and petiole.  Sometimes it's a pink color.

Shown here is an older, fairly large 15g plant of Bismarckia Mayotte Island.  I am putting this size on special.  These plants are quite chunky and sun grown.  They have even seen temperatures of 102 degrees F. in a spring Santa Ana and did ok with that.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.  Limited numbers of this rare palm remain in our inventory.  So, if you are a "Madagascar Nut" and want to try different things, get one while I have them.

CHAMAEDOREA PLUMOSA
THE BABY QUEEN PALM
SINGLE THIN TRUNK
LOOK BEST IN GROUPS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

For anyone who's looked for this species lately, you realize it's in very short supply and essentially unavailable in larger sizes.  This is because of a several year shortage of seeds.  We are pleased to presently put nice one gallon plants on special.  All are multiples with at least 3 plants per pot.  This species gets up to about 14 feet height with a green, ringed trunk about 1.5 inches in diameter.  The leaves are plumose or fluffy.  They are quick growing and perfect for narrow planter areas.  It will take full coastal sun.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It can also be used as a houseplant in a bright area.  This one gallon size is a piece of cake to ship and we can easily fit four plants into one box.  We ship plants in their pots with soil.

ALOCASIA PORTORA
OLD 15 GALLON ON SALE
STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL COMPANION PLANT
FAIRLY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

For about six to eight years I've been growing a nice species of Alocasia.  Originally, I though this was Alocasia macrorhyza.  But, it didn't quite match up.   Recently a customer who specializes in Alocasia contacted me and told me these are A. portora.  It get leaves about 3 feet long with an overall arrowhead shape.  Leaf edges are scalloped.  Leaf stems are either silver green or brown-green.  It is very pretty and seems to attain a height of about 5 to 6 feet from the ground.  It does cluster but doesn't appear to "run".  It's an ideal companion plant with dark green leaves in shade and a lighter green in coastal sun.  People love this plant!  I'm offering them on a 10 day special.  I have no smaller plants and only a half dozen of these guys.  They are older plants with lots of tubers and stems.  Cold tolerance is below a freeze.  These plants have seen 28 degrees here and may be more cold hardy than this.

REGULAR PRICE 15G $200
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G $150

Just remember - mention this Blog Special for your discount.  I can mail order these plants.

SABAL MEXICANA
MEDIUM TO TALL FAN PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

At one time this species was much more prevalent in Texas, but in recent times its numbers have dwindled.  Native habitat extends from Texas down through Latin America on both coastal sides of these countries.  In habitat, specimens up to fifty feet have been observed.  Trunks are straight and columnar.  Trunk diameter is typically twelve to eighteen inches.  Most domestic plants are in the twenty to thirty foot range.  Old leaf bases are retained in the upper trunk area but will fall way with age.  The crown is green with a hint of silver and full.  This species is similar to Sabal palmetto but usually bigger with a larger crown of leaves.  Like the Palmetto Palm, it is very cold hardy, perhaps even to ten degrees F.

Shown here are some 5g plants which I'm putting on special.  I've also shown a 15g and some garden plants.  This is a full sun species and a great selection for someone in a colder area.

CAVENDISH DWARF BANANA
CULTIVAR OF MUSA ACUMINATA
MAKES EDIBLE BANANAS IN SO CAL
5G AND 15G AVAILABLE

The dwarf bananas that I'm offering here are a small form of Musa acuminata.  There are many cultivars.  This one gets to a height of about six feet and will make yellow, near normally sized and edible bananas.  The 15g size are suckering and up to your chest.  They tolerate temperatures down to about a freeze.  If, during winter, the leaves suffer cold burn, the plants usually come back in spring.  Our supply ran out a few months ago, but now they are back in stock.  The 5g size would be easy to mail order.

OUR CYCAD SOIL
JUST GOT IN A NEW BATCH
WE DO SELL IT BY THE 15 GALLON BAG

From time to time, I do tinker with the formulae we use for our cycad soil.  But, the basic ingredients are pumice, coarse sand (#12), fir wood chips, fir shavings, peat moss, perlite, and a touch of high grade topsoil.  We also add dolomite and a slow release Osmocote fertilizer.  Be aware, there is no "perfect" single mix or formulae that you have to use.  At this website I do give a specific component ratios for a cycad mix.  (link below)  This soil shown will support most cycads and is quick draining.  One ideally might alter it for tropical species like lush Zamia.  We sell this cycad mix by the bag for those who don't have the capacity to make their own.  But, it's way to heavy and expensive to ship by mail order because of the weight.

KALANCHOE FALCATA
THE PROPELLER PLANT
IN BRIGHT RED BLOOM
GRAY COLORED LEAVES

For me to grow and offer a succulent, there has to be something special about it.  Such is the case with this interesting Kalanchoe that is, right now, in florid blossom.  It forms four to six inch wide clusters of bright red flowers.  These blossoms are long lived and happen at this late summer time.  The leaves are fleshy and gray in color.  Mature plant height is two to three feet.  This species doesn't take a lot of cold and it's best to grow it in a frost free area.  It likes sun or part sun.  Through our succulent supplier I can offer a good number of these.

CANNA LILY
NICE 5G NOW AVAILABLE
DARK PURPLE LEAVES
ORANGE BLOSSOM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Canna Lilies are a tropical or semi-tropical perennial plant.  They are not a true Lily but called a Lily.  This type of thing happens all the time, especially with "palms".  They are probably most closely related to Gingers.  I've found the foliage is a bit less appealing in winter.  Then, in summer when it's warm, they do their thing with rapid growth of pretty foliage as shown here and a prolonged display of colorful blossoms.  They can take our coastal sun or part sun.  I have several types/varieties available.  I'm showing one with very pretty dark foliage today.  It has bold orange flowers.   Limited supplies are available.

DYPSIS LUTESCENS
THE ARECA PALM
CLUSTERING PALM MATURE AT ABOUT 14 FEET HERE IN CA
SUCKERING PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL TWO SIZES!
This is an attractive, suckering, thin trunked palm species is from Madagascar or surrounding areas.  The number one reason people buy this species is "to hide something".  By this, I mean they want to hide a neighbor, an ugly next door structure, an unsightly fence, the side of a garage, etc.  This is an ideal species for this purpose as it suckers and is fairly dense.  You can't see through it well.  Mature height averages 14 TO 16 feet in California.  Sometimes they are taller or shorter, depending on culture.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  Trunk diameter is about 3 inches.  It'll take full sun along the coast and far inland areas must give it only morning or filtered sun.  I am offering two larger sizes on special for ten days.

DURANTA "SAPPHIRE SHOWERS"
FRAGRANT PURPLE FLOWERS
TOLERATES SUN OR PART SUN
UNUSUAL VARIEGATED LEAF FORM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This attractive shrub is from Mexico down to South America and has typically green leaves.  The plants were offering today in 5g and 15g size have variegation. They will produce weeping purple flower clusters.  The flowers have white edges and are very fragrant.  These flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

This tree can be shaped and trained.  Left alone, it can get to about ten feet tall.  It prefers sun but does well in part day sun.  Like the Euphorbia above, it adds full sun color to the garden.  Cold hardiness is well into the 20's F.

BRAHEA BRANDEGEEI
TALL, QUICK GROWING BRAHEA
GREEN LEAVES, SORT OF WISPY
THIN TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

Rarely do I have this hard to find palm and even more rarely do I put it on special.  It's one of the hardest of the Braheas to locate.  It can reach heights of over 80 feet and is native to Baja California, Mexico.  Trunks are thin.  Crowns of leaves are open.  Leaf color is typically green as shown here.  One of the best places to see this species is in Balboa Park, San Diego, less than a half mile from where I live.  It wants full sun, tolerates wind and dry conditions and is a good growing species.  Despite it's beauty, its a solid grower and a fine addition to any garden.

USUALLY SINGLE TRUNK - SOMETIMES SUCKERING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This palm is not native to Madagascar as most people think.  Rather, it's natural habitat is on an off-shore island named Nossi-be.  It has a medium sized trunk and gets to about 30 feet tall.  Leaves are plumose as shown here.  Most plants are single trunk although suckering forms do exist.  Leaves emerge in three ranks or planes, this characteristic called "tristichous".  There is a modified crown shaft.  In most areas this palm likes sun.  Cold hardiness is uncertain but probably in the mid to upper 20's F.

About two years ago we ran out of this un-named but super desirable blue Brahea.  It resembles a Brahea armata but is faster growing, gets taller and has a much thinner trunk.  It is native to Mexico.  Seeds have only been available twice.  The last batch came out an estimated seven years ago.  I had about 50 plants and they flew out of the nursery, particularly to people who see cold weather.  I thought I was out of them, but recently acquired some nice one gallon and band sized plants.  For those who have grown Brahea, you'll be pleased with the growth rate of this species (un-named).  If you are in a cold area or love blue palms, you have to try one of these.  And, they are on sale!  Color will be blue when outdoors.  Cold hardiness is into the teens F.  It wants heat and full sun.  Did you get that these are super rare and hard to find?

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM
NEWLY EMERGENT RED LEAF
SINGLE TRUNK - GORGOUS!
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a super popular single trunk, pinnate palm from New Caledonia.  It is known as the Flame Thrower Palm because of its newly emerging red leaf.  This color lasts for two to three weeks and ranges in color from a dark burgundy to a pinkish-red.  Mature height is about 25 to 30 feet with a thin to medium girth trunk that has a long green crown shaft. Sometimes you'll see marbling of the trunk - known as the watermelon trait.  There is also a blond crown shaft form called Chamberyonia hookeri.  Growth rate is slow with most plants making two leaves a year.  It tolerates full sun right on the coast.  Far inland, people give it filtered light or morning sun.  Cold hardiness is about 23 degrees F.

TEN DAY SPECIAL BANDS $27.50

YUCCA ROSTRATA
SUPER BLUE FOLIAGE
SEMI-DWARF SUN PLANT
TOLERATES VERY COLD WEATHER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

This small to medium sized, drought tolerant plant is native to the southern U.S. border and down into Mexico.  It is usually a single trunk mature plant but can fork above the ground.  Most notable is the silver-blue foliage as shown here.  It is very slow growing.  Over time it forms a trunk about eight or ten inches thick.  Foliage is about 2 feet long and not "pokey" or sharp.  It demands full sun and is cold hardy at least to the lower teens F.  Gardeners like this species because it's not very big and gives nice color to a sunny garden.  Although not part of our Blowout Sale, I'm offering these at a discount to Blog Readers.

REGULAR PRICE 15G $250

PLANT NUMBER:
57

RARITY:
Very rare
COMMENTS:  This attractive cycad is also a favorite of mine.  It is extremely hard to find with any size.  It's also super slow growing.  The unique thing are the widely space lancet shaped (sickle shaped) leaflets that point downwards at their ends.  This is like Encephalartos inopinus, so sought after.  They do best in part day sun although some grow them in full sun.  This is a nice cycad for any garden and in your life won't get overly large.  They grow along the Pacific coastal region in central Mexico near Puerto Vallarta.

PRESENCE OF OFFSETS/PUPS:
PLANT NUMBER:  112
RARITY:  Extremely rare
COMMENTS:
Very little is published about this medium sized Macrozamia from the Jurien Bay area of western Australia.  Trunks can get overhead.  This is a good sized green cycad.  this is the first time we've ever offered it for sale and are pleased we have several to select from.  Although leaf color here has a definite blue color, our research shows that mature plants have green leaves.  These plants were grown from seed by the original collection owner.

CONTAINER SIZE:  15 gallon
CAUDEX SIZE:  Double caudexes - 4 and 2 inches
PRESENCE OF OFFSETS/PUPS:  As above
PLANT NUMBER:  72
RARITY:  Unbelievably rare
COMMENTS:  This is one of the most sought after cycads in the world.  It is native to central Australia and has an amazing blue color in full sun.  Leaves get to seven feet long with a full crown of leaves.  Overall height is eight to ten feet mature.  It wants heat, full sun and good drainage.  The few lucky owners of this species in Southern California are growing it successfully.  The is the first time we've offered this species in over a decade.

CAUDEX SIZE:  Clustering plant, multiple caudexes, female in cones (multiple), 7 inches across
PRESENCE OF OFFSETS/PUPS:  As above
PLANT NUMBER:  91
RARITY:  Extremely rare
COMMENTS: This is one of the harder Zamias to locate.  Native to Cuba, it's been historically impossible to get seeds.  Plants are typically under a few feet tall with small, oblong leaflets.  It suckers freely.  It can take filtered light and possibly sun right near the coast.  It tolerates dry conditions but responds to water.  We have two fabulous female specimens in cone.  These would be a great addition to any garden, especially valuable to people who want to set seeds.

BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM
HARD TO FIND BLUE LIKE THESE
RUGGED AND COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

Native to South America, this medium sized pinnate palm is quite popular.  But, they are normally green or a blue green in color.  The plants I'm showing here are a clone that is super blue!  They are very cool and super popular.  And, they are hard to find.  Mature height is 15 feet with a trunk diameter of about 18 inches.  They loves sun, even in the desert.  A bonus:  fruits are edible and taste good.  This is why it's also called the "Jelly Palm".  If you plant this clone in shade, the blue won't show as well.  This size can be shipped.  It is cold hardy to about 15 degrees F.

ROYSTONEA REGIA
THE ROYAL PALM TREE
THE CUBAN ROYAL PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2G SIZE

This single trunk, very elegant and tall, crown shafted and fast growing species is native to southern Florida and Cuba.  At one time, the "Florida Royal" was known as R. elata.  But, that "species"/ name has been combined with R. regia.  It gets to a height of sixty feet of more, has an elongated smooth and green crown shaft and has a swollen base with a fat trunk.  Leaves are plumose and long.  Leaves hang down toward the trunk with age.  Growth rate is fast.  This sun likes full sun, even in the desert.  Cold tolerance is 25 degrees F.  This is the same as the King Palm.  For some reason there is a shortage of this species on the market.  Although these 2g are not very big, this is what we have at this time.  I'm putting them on special.

ENCEPHALARTOS ITURIENSIS
CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD WITH LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES
SUPER RARE
TEN DAY SPECIAL JUVENILE PLANTS

This species is native to the Ituri Forest in the Congo in Central Africa.  It is extremely rare to see it offered for sale.  This cycad would not be as cold hardy as plants further south in South Africa.  But, it should take weather into the mid-twenties F.  E. ituriensis is known for its long, upright leaves reaching well over twelve to fourteen feet tall.  It towers over E. whitelockii in terms of length.  Leaflets are armed and narrow.  The plants on special are three to four years old and carrying about four leaves.  BTW, if you search the Net for photos of this species, they are essentially nonexistent.  This is because of political instability of the area, remote native location and the risk of Ebola infection.  Certainly this has hampered availability of this species worldwide.

ACCOELORRHAPHE WRIGHTII
THE PAUROTIS PALM
SUCKERIN, MEDIUM HEIGHT FAN PALM
LOVES SUN AND WATER
TEN DAY SPECIAL BIG 1 GALLON

This suckering fan palm has a wide native distribution spreading from Southern Florida (where it's known as the Everglade Palm), Mexico, some Caribbean Islands, Central America and far northern South America.  It has a fondness for water and can tolerate wet conditions.  It loves sun and heat.  People in the desert can grow it if they give it adequate water.   Cold hardiness is about 20 degrees F.  Mature height is variable, somewhere between fifteen and thirty feet.  Trunks are thin and have an attractive fiber pattern.  It is known to grow better in the ground that in containers.

We're offering nice one gallon plants on special.  We might also have a few 5g.  The one gallon size are simple to ship.  Note on the last pictures that the trunks of this palm are quite thin and the crowns of leaves are small.

For folks who like big King Palms, this one might be perfect for you.  Native to the Atherton Tablelands in Australia, its native habitat is up to 3500 feet.  This is a single trunk pinnate species that is part of the group of palms all known as "King Palms".  Mature heights are up to seventy feet with an 18 inch thick trunk.  The underside of the leaflets are silver as shown here.  Contrast this to the absence of silver on our "teracarpa" that I've Blogged about before.  This is a full sun species with a cold tolerance of 25 degrees F.  The plants on sale here are huge band size, age 3 years.  They are equivalent to a 2 gallon plant.

HOWEA BELMOREANA
THE CURLY OR SENTRY PALM
CURVED/REFLEXED LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This more rare type of Kentia Palm is from Lord Howe Island, the home also to the more common Howea forsteriana.  But, the Belmore Palm grows at a higher mountain elevation than the forsteriana.  Therefore, it possesses a bit more sturdiness and cold tolerance.  The hallmark of this species is the curve seen in the leaves.  They curve downwards toward the ground.  Thus we get the name "Curly" Palm.  Some call it a type of "umbrella" palm as well.  Expect a height up to 35 feet or a bit more with a six to eight inch trunk.  The 5g on special here are quite nice and 5 years old.

PRITCHARDIA MINOR
GORGEOUS HAWAIIAN FAN PALM
NATIVE TO HIGH ELEVATION ON KAUAI
RARE IN CULTIVATION
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G

This is one of the more desirable species of the family of Pritchardia.  This genus is native to HI but also to some South Pacific islands.  For those of us in California, this distinction is important.  Most of the Hawaiian specie do well here.  Those from the South Pacific don't.  Pritchardia minor is from the western side of Kauai where I've been lucky enough to see it in habitat.  There it grows at elevations up to 4200 feet.  Although I've not seen plants over 20 feet tall, there are apparently habitat plants that are 30 feet.  The leaf is flat, green on top and somewhat silver below.  The trunk is narrow.  The 5g size on special here are very nice.

PRITCHARDIA MARTII
ANOTHER HAWAIIAN SPECIES
FROM THE ISLAND OF OAHU
BIG FLAT LEAVES
RUSTY SILVER UNDERNEATH
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

I remember visiting Lyon Arboretum in Honolulu years ago and talking to the late botanist Ray Baker.  This Garden is west of the city, nestled right next to the foot of a range of mountains.  Ray was responsible for the fantastic collection of palms at the Garden.  Ray pointed up to the mountains towering over the garden.  He told me that "right up there. That's where I collected Pritchardia martii."  Native habitats for this species are on steep cliffs at elevations of 300 to 2000 feet.  It can get to a height of thirty feet.  But, the trunk is much thicker than P. minor above.  The leaves are also wider, very flat and a rusty-silver below.  This palm is super attractive and any palm enthusiast will love it.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It takes coastal sun or part day sun.  The 5g on special aren't as big as the minors above but very nice - and hard to find!

EUPHORBIA CONTINIFOLIA
THE CARIBBEAN COPPER PLANT
SEMI-DWARF, SUN, NOT TOO TALL
EASY COLOR FOR THE GARDEN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This rare, red leafed plant tolerates full sun along the coast.  It's hard to find color for full sun areas.  This one satisfies that need.  It is native to Mexico, Central America and parts of South America.  Left alone, it can get up to about eight or ten feet tall.  But, it can be pruned and trained to remain smaller and bushy if one wants.  It has a cold tolerance of 25 to 30 degrees.

But, this is a deciduous tree and will drop off its leaves when winter comes, only to return with gorgeous 3 to 4 inch red leaves.  The plants we have available are in 15g pots and about seven feet tall.  The fourth picture shows the great color this plant offers.  Of note, it also makes a great containerized patio plant.

ACTINOKENTIA DIVARICATA
MINIATURE FLAME THROWER
THIN TRUNK, COLD HARDY, SLOW GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

I am glad that I can still offer this rare palm in the affordable band size.  This is one of the slowest growing species that you'll ever grow.  But, it reliably gets bigger over time.  Mature, its trunk is about 3 to 4 inches thick.  Newly emerging leaves are red.  It is crown shafted and single trunk.  Mature height is about twelve to fifteen feet.  It is an under-canopy species.  I've not tried it in the sun.  Native to New Caledonia, this plant takes about 2 years from seed to produce the band sized plants seen here.

Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F.  Folks in cooler areas like San Francisco can grow this species.  These bands have three leaves on most.

TRACHYCARPUS TAKIL
POSSIBLY THE MOST COLD HARDY WINDMILL
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

People from colder areas often call me seeking out this hard to find species.  It was described by Martin Gibbons and Tobias spanner ten to twenty years ago and is native to China.  It is felt to me a natural hybrid many eons ago but has been given its own species status.  It gets to about twenty feet height as shown in the photo below.  Cold tolerance could be below 10 degrees F. (not documented scientifically) and people often refer to it as the most cold hardy species of the genus.  We are offering our band size on special although we do have other sizes available.

This tall, single trunk form of the King Palm is native to northern Australia in the Queensland district.  There is lives in moist areas, often along rivers.  It can reach heights up to 60 feet in habitat and has a prominent green crown shaft.  The fruits are large for a King Palm species.  Compared to the "teracarpa" that I discussed yesterday, the trunk would be considered thin.  It's usually under 12 inches thick.  Growth rate is fast.  For best appearance, give it part day sun if you can.  Cold tolerance is the mid-twenties F. but not colder.

LACCOSPADIX AUSTRALASICA
SUCKERING MOUNTIAN FORM
BEST GROWING SPECIES
NO NEW RED LEAF
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G AND 5G

When one considers the species Laccospadix australasica, he has to realize that there are different forms depending on native habitat/localities.  There are also single trunk and suckering forms.  The one for sale here is the mountain suckering form.  I feel it's the best subspecies one can purchase.   It doesn't throw the new red leaf.  The latter form is slow growing and doesn't perform as well.  The seeds for these plants today came from a local flowering tree here in Encinitas.  This variety has thinner leaves that are dull green in color, trunks about four to five inches thick and reaches a height of 12 feet.  It sort of looks like a suckering Kentia Palm.  I'd recommend morning sun, strong filtered light or perhaps several hours of daily sun.  Cold tolerance is into the twenties F.

This rare species of Arenga is native to Tibet and the eastern Himalayan Mountains.  It grows at elevations of over a mile.  It is a suckering species that gets to a height of 15 to 20 feet.  It is very rare and near impossible to find.  I'd give it filtered light.  The 5 gallon plants shown here are about 8 years old and have four inch thick bases.  They would be the size of anyone's 15g stock.  These 5g can be shipped.  Although not totally worked out, cold hardiness is into the teens F.

COCCOTHRINAX BARBADENSIS
THE SILVER PALM
THIN TRUNK - FAIRLY TALL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 G SIZE

One would think that the native locality for this attractive fan palm would only be the island of Barbados.  But, it is found on quite a few Caribbean Islands.  It is a tall species for Coccothrinax.  In the wild it gets up to 40 feet with a very thin trunk.  It's common name comes from the fact that the undersides of the leaves are silver as shown here.  I've seen variability in this and some specimens in botanical gardens don't show the silver.  All Coccothrinax want sun.  All species are New World palms.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties as a rule.  We're offering nice 5g plants of this species on special.  They can be shipped.

DYPSIS PEMBANA
MEDIUM TO TALL PALM FROM PEMBA ISLAND
SOMETIMES SUCKERING, SOMETIMES SINGLE TRUNK

This attractive medium sized Dypsis comes from the Island of Pemba off the coast of Madagascar.  It is sometimes single trunk, other times suckering.  This variability in the number of trunks is seen with quite a few Dypsis.  It gets to a height of thirty to forty feet, has silver or silver-green trunks with prominent rings, with six foot long leaves on short petioles.  The leaves are keeled in cross-section.  Growth is rapid.  In our area of Southern California, part day sun seems to work well.  Inland areas show put in strong filtered light.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F.  This morning I am showing you two sizes, the 25g and the 15g plants.  I took these photos a few days ago and only have a few of each in stock.  On the larger one, from ground to the top of the leaves is about ten feet.

Of note, in habitat, sometimes this is a suckering species and occasionally it is just one trunk.  I cannot predict for sure that these two plants will not sucker.

This species is similar to Dypsis lanceolata.  A way I recognize D. pembana when juvenile is by the upper stem, where you see a definite speckled tan color below the newly emerging spear.  Dypsis lanceolata has more of a silver color in this same area.

SABAL URESANA
THE SONORAN PALMETTO
A VERY BLUE FAN PALM
COLD HARDY, FULL SUN

This medium sized blue fan palm is native to northern Mexico.  I've heard reports that native habitats extend north across the borders of either AZ or New Mexico.  It is most known for its prominent blue color.  It is a medium sized Sabal with mature heights of about 20 to 25 feet.  Growth rate is average.  It takes full sun and heat.  Cold tolerance is well into the teens F.  The plant shown here from the nursery is a 2g size.  We try to keep this species in stock because it's so popular, but we're getting very low on them presently.  It might be one to try if you live in an area like colder TX, the Gulf States, northern Florida or the SF Bay area.

ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO
GREEN CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
UPRIGHT LEAVES
HUGE NURSERY SPECIMEN IN CONE
CAUDEX ALMOST 15 INCHES
!

Encephalartos kisambo is a fast growing species native to Kenya where it grows at elevations of 3000 feet. It is a medium sized mature plant with trunks to eight feet.  Leaves are green to soapy green in color, stand erect and are six to ten feet long.  To my eye, the hallmark of this species are the very erect leaves, going almost straight upwards.  Leaflets are 1.5 inches wide, pungently tipped at the end, and spiny along the margins.  Cones are yellow.  Please appreciate this is a fantastic specimen of this species - one you essentially never see for sale!

This is a fast growing species that can tolerate our coastal sun.  Far inland locations should use part day sun.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties, perhaps a bit lower.  We had no leaf damage at the nursery in 2007 with lows of 25 degrees F.  Shown here is a very old, seed grown specimen in cone.  We think it's a male but won't know for sure until the plant ages a bit.  Age of this plant is over 15 years at the nursery.  I'm also showing a much younger 15g.  We have multiple sizes for sale with some that are easy to ship.

CRINUM AMABILE PURPLE LEAF
LARGE CRINUM TYPE LILY
AKA "QUEEN EMMA LILY"
OVERHEAD WITH STRIKING FLOWERS
PURPLE-GREEN LEAVES
ONLY A FEW LEFT - LARGE PLANTS

This Lily is native to all sorts of locations throughout the world including southern Asia, Australia, and Africa.  It is known for it's spiraling display of long, heavy substance leaves that are upright and four to six feet long.  Their color is green and dark purple.  Flowers are white with purple centers and markings.  It grows like other Lilies by making offset tubers that make new plants.  The specimens we obtained were dug from a collection and have been divided.  They do quite well with this and none suffered from digging at all.

Expect a mature height of six to seven feet, definitely overhead.  As mentioned, they clump and form a great display of foliage.  They will not "run" or take over an area.  The plants we have left in 25 gallon containers and quite full.  They are for sale.  We have none smaller.  They tolerate full or part day coastal sun and can take a freeze.  Temperatures in the 20 to 25 degree range will damage the foliage but plants reappear in the spring.  The last photos show two plants we put into 45 gallon concrete tubs at the entrance to our nursery.  They are doing great in full sun.

GIANT TIMBER BAMBOO
DESIRABLE VARIAGATED FORM
GREEN STRIPES ON YELLOW STEMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL

I am not a Bamboo expert in any way.  I grow some plants but do not specialize in it.  But, I've always liked looking at the trunks of the variegated Timber Bamboo.  This species is a large bamboo and can get over thirty feet tall.  The stems are yellow with green stripes.  It likes sun and needs lots of water.  Nursery plants are from divisions of existing plants.  Such is the case with this seven foot tall plant we have for sale.  I can get more of these by special order.  But, right now I'm offering them at a discount.  This type of bamboo is never inexpensive.  Also, the trunks get thick, up to at least three to four inches thick. I've heard it can be grown as a houseplant in a bright room.

COPERNICIA BERTEROANA
THIN TRUNKED TROPICAL FAN PALM
NATIVE TO DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This is a fan palm you will hardly ever see available and never on special.  It is native to Hispaniola and reaches a mature height of about 30 feet.  But, in contrast to so many other Copernicia, the trunk is quite thin.  It is usually nine inches thick or less.  Leaves are green and flat. Segments of the leaf are only separated at their ends so that the leaf has a solid flat appearance.  New leaves are held upright and appear rigid.  There is a bit of blue on the leaf stems as shown here.  Old retained leaf bases fall off over time to give a clean trunk.  Petioles do have armor.

This is a full sun palm.  It's so rare to know of anyone growing this that we have little cold hardiness data.  I'd estimate it'll go into the twenties F.  On sale are very nice 5g plants.  I've shown close ups of a fruiting size tree; pictures I took recently.

BLUE ENCEPHALARTOS LONGIFOLIUS
GORGEOUS SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
CURVED LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Among staff members at our nursery, this is one of the favorites of all the cycads we grow.  Encephalartos longifolius is native to South Africa.  There are habitat populations with both green and blue leaves.  Both varieties are very desirable.  A nice thing about this species is that it gives a larger and faster growing blue cycad when compared to blue species like Encephalartos lehmannii and horridus.  Leave have a nice curve downwards as shown in some photos here.  It would not be unusual to get a plant with several feet of trunk in two to three decades.  Width of the crown is larger than lehmannii, usually six to seven feet.  E. lehmannii is more petite in comparison.  The bands on this special are about 2.5 years old with three to four leaves.  They can be easily shipped.  This species prefers full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

TRACHYCARPUS FORTUNEI

Windmill palms are all of Asian origin.   Trachycarus fortunei is native to China and typically gets to a height of about 20 feet.  The amazing thing is that this is the second most cold hardy of all palms - taking down to about ten degrees F.  It takes full or part day sun.  It's a medium rate growing species.  It has a hairy trunk and (especially if the hairs are removed) is rather thin in diameter.  It makes a nice patio plant.

SABAL MINOR
DWARF, COLD HARDY FAN PALM
TEN DAY SALE BAND SIZE

This is a dwarf species of fan palm from the southern United States and is commonly found in the state of Texas.  It rarely gets foliage overhead with an average height of four to seven feet.  It has a long petiole and a small leaf.  The blossom produces an ample supply of small black seeds and juts upward above the foliage.  This is often a way to identify it as it produces flowers and fruit as a smaller plant.

It takes sun and can tolerate part day sun.  Cold tolerance is excellent, probably about 16 degrees F.  We're offering our band size on species.  This is the first four photos.  I've also shown garden plants, a 5g plant and seeds on a blossom.

BRAHEA EDULIS
GUADALUPE FAN PALM
FOR THOSE WHO LIKE "SHORTER" PALMS
VERY SLOW GROWING - MAXIMUM HEIGHT 15 FEET IN 50 YEARS!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This single trunk fan palm is native to a small island off the coast of northern Baja, Mexico.  Yes, this is a peculiar place to have a population of only one palm on this island.  Because of goats, this population is threatened.  They eat all the small seedlings.  They were introduced by the Mexican government to control pests & weeds.  But, it has backfired as far as the palms are concerned.  There are simply no smaller trees of this species in the native locality.

The Guadalupe Fan is slow growing.  It has a rather stout trunk that is finely checked on close inspection (see photo).  It takes about 50 years to get ten feet of trunk.  So, availability of large, crane sized specimens is quite rare and they always have to be dug.  Leaf stems are fairly un-armed.  Leaves are minimally wavy.  They love full, hot sun and are cold hardy into the upper teens F.

CARYOTA KIRIWONGENSIS
LARGE, SINGLE TRUNK
SIMILAR TO
C. GIGAS
BUT, STIFFER LEAVES
CLOSER TAXONOMICALLY TO
C. ZEBRINA AND C. OPHIOPELLIS

This is an extremely rare and impossible to find species of Caryota, the Fishtail Palm.  At one point we had five or six of this species and held this one back to grow it larger.  You'll notice the similarities to Caryota gigas.  But, the large leaves are more firm and more stiff.  Also, the seeds are homogenous like those of C. zebrine and ophiopellis.  Caryota kiriwongensis is native to high elevations in northern Malaya.  This palm should get tall, over thirty feet with a thick trunk and bipinnate leaves.  The plant shown here is the only one we have and in a 15g.  I know of no others this large for sale.  On the Net there are essentially no photos of mature specimens.

PLATYCERIUM SUPERBUM
THE MOOSEHORN FERN
A TYPE OF STAGHORN FERN
EPIPHYTIC BY NATURE
GROW ON A PIECE OF WOOD
OR, MOUNT TO A TREE TRUNK

We have a customer/friend at the nursery who has a peculiar talent.  He likes starting ferns from spores.  He's quite accomplished at this.  He dropped by the nursery two days ago and asked if we'd like to carry some big Moosehorn Ferns.  Of course, I said "yes".  Shown here is a specimen about 16 inches wide mounted on wood.  It's been outdoor grown.  It's very showy.

Platycerium are all types of a fern that we know as "Staghorn Ferns".  The Moosehorn in by far the most attractive of the group.  Platycerium are native to Australia and Southeast Asia.  They grow epiphytically on trunks and limbs in the rainforest.  They like a bit of sun but not too much.  During winter they like to be watered once a week.  When hot, they need twice a week watering making sure they are not kept damp.  A little "drying out" period is needed between waterings.  They are cold hardy into the upper twenties F.  I will never have more than one or two of these at any given time at the nursery.

ENCEPHALARTOS ALTENSTEINII
A CURLY LEAFLET FORM
NATIVE TO SOUTH AFRICA
A MOST UNUSUAL AND PECULIAR CYCAD

Even to avid cycad enthusiasts, what I'm showing you here has not been seen by many people.  Encephalartos altensteinii is native to the Natal and Eastern Cape regions of South Africa.  It is a large cycad.  Normally the leaflets are flat or minimally cupped (if at all).  The plant here has somewhat rolled or "curly" leaflets.  This is a well known variant of E. ferox but super rare with E. altensteinii.  This plant is in a 24 inch box and have a caudex of ten inches.  The third photo is best for seeing the curling of the leaflets.  And, of course, this plant is for sale.  One would give it full sun along the coast and it'd be cold hardy well into the low 20's F.  BTW, I could fin no photos of this variety of this species on the Internet.

CYCAS REVOLUTA X DEBAOENSIS
CYCAS "REV-DEB"

NEW SEEDLINGS AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

We are offering today seedlings of a very interesting cycad cross.  Everyone knows the Sago Palm, Cycas revoluta.  Most don't know about the Chinese multi-pinnate and super rare cycad, Cycas debaoensis.  The first two photos show the parent species.  This hybrid has been coined the name "Cycas rev-deb", an abbreviation for the parents.  These F1 hybrids were made by pollenating a Sago female cone with pollen from the C. debaoensis.  The resulting seeds took quite a few months to germinate but started coming up.  Some are already two leaves with their 18 month age.  They were potted into bands recently.

When hybridization is done, one never knows for sure what one will get.  And, not all the resulting hybrids will look the same.  Some will look more like a Sago and others more like the father (debaoensis).  Only time will tell.  The seeds came from a friend in Florida who hand pollenated the female plant.  I feel confident we'll get cycads from these that will have multiple leaflets off the primary stem.  The hopes is that these seedlings will mature into a plant that will be a faster growing, more durable, bigger cycad that is multi-pinnate (branched to the second or third order).  Seedlings rarely initially show the characteristics of the mature hybrid.  Only time will tell.

There is some type of seductive quality to this rare species of Dioon.  I think it's because of the compact, rigid, keeled and curved leaves.  At times they are a bit bizarre appearing - but very appealing.  This is a species that takes on the mature appearance over time.  As a young plant you might think it's a "ho-hummer".  But, as it ages, it develops its traditional appearance and gets more attractive.  Leaves are four to five feet long.  In a domestic situation, a plant with a three foot trunk would be enormous.  It takes full sun and is cold hardy into the lower 20's F.

This vigorous fan palm is native to Bermuda and several other nearby islands in the Caribbean.  It gets to a height of 75 feet tall (or more) in many decades.  Leaf color is green.  Trunk diameter approaches two feet.  It loves sun and heat.  I've read reports of cold hardiness into the mid-teens F.  The band size on sale are huge for their container. They are equivalent to nearly a 5g size at many nurseries.

SABAL BLACKBURNIANA
THE HISPANIOLA PALMETTO
ANOTHER THICK TRUNK GREEN FAN PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This green leaf fan palm is native to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  Some feel that it's the same palm as Sabal dominguensis.  It's not quite as tall as S. bermudana (above) but still gets up to sixty feet in height.  It has a nearly two foot thick trunk.  Petioles are long and leaves are large.  Some refer to this palm as the "Palmetto Palm on Steroids".  It loves heat and sun.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-teens F.  I  apologize that I don't have a picture of a big garden plant.  The one shown is in Encinitas, CA.

REGULAR PRICE BAND $30
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE $25

These are also good sized band plants. We have larger sizes for sale as well.  Shipping the band size in their pots with soil is easy.

RHAPIS EXCELSA
THE LADY PALM
ONE OF THE BEST INTERIOR PALMS
GREAT SIZE FOR MAIL ORDER
TEN DAY SPECIAL LARGE 3G SIZE
FANTASTIC DEAL - INTERIOR QUALITY

We just got in about three dozen Lady Palms which have been imported from Hawaii and are high quality - interior quality plants.  These are nice enough for a bank or hotel lobby, a professional office or even your living room.  Rhapis excelsa is native to Asia and typically doesn't get much over 8 feet tall in a pot.  They do great in shady locations of the garden or inside the home.  They are a very nice patio plant.  Cold hardiness is about 20 degrees F.  They want low dose fertilizer.  Too much fertilizer will burn them.  The plants on special here are between four to five feet in their pots and easy to mail order.  These plants have been pampered to look perfect.  Normally, interior quality plants are two to three times more expensive than routine nursery stock.  And, they are being sold at a price almost equivalent to a regular nursery stock plant.  They won't last long.

This interesting group of succulents are native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, Morocco and East Africa.  There are about twenty-six species and multiple hybrids.  They form small bush like plants.  They are unique in that they have small rosettes of leaves of an assortment of colors and variegation.  I think the photos here show this.  Anticipate a branching small plant that rarely gets over about four feet tall.  They are easy to propagate, like sun and are cold hardy into the mid-twenties F.  We have about six types of Aeoniums in sizes from one to five gallon.

PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA MEDJOOL
VARIETY

THE TRUE DATE PALM
BEST DATE FRUIT VARIETY

TEN DAY SALE 5 GALLON PLANTS

This is a great cold hardy plant, being able to tolerate temperatures down into the mid-teens F.  It is hard to find this cultivar of the True Date Palm.  This is the one that gets blue and makes the best tasting dates.  The plants I'm offering on special were grown in a greenhouse so they are not showing that blue color yet.  But, they will when given direct sun and heat.  Remember, you need a male and female to get dates and the female bears the fruit.

These are nice 5g plants about three to four feet tall.  They demand full sun, can get up to 40 feet tall and inherently can sucker.  One would remove the suckers if he wants a single trunk.

REGULAR PRICE 5G THIS SPECIES $65
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $45

These are easy to ship.  Just remember to mention this Special so you get the discount. The fifth and six figures are stock photos to demonstrate the color.  They are not the plants on special today.  Of note, we only have limited numbers of these 5g plants available.  Don't dally.

CHAMAEDOREA MICROSPADIX

TWO LARGE AND OLD 15G PLANTS
GOOD SELECTION AT NURSERY
VARIOUS SIZES - MANY CAN BE SHIPPED

This thin trunked, suckering and medium sized New World Palm is known as the most cold hardy of the suckering forms of Chamaedorea.  It pretty much matches the cold hardiness of Chamaedorea radicalis.  It typically has an eight foot height when planted in the garden.  The second 15g plant is totally mature and flowering.  It is about 8 feet tall.  Note the thin nature of the trunks and the short, rather wide leaflets.  We also have 5g plant and band size.  This is a filtered light species and has a cold tolerance of about 18 degrees F.

SCHIPPIA CONCOLOR
VERY THIN TRUNK
MEDIUM HEIGHT FAN PALM
3G SIZE AVAILABLE - RARE
TEN DAY SPECIAL!

This interesting and super thin trunked fan palm comes from Belize.  Taxonomically, one might think it's most closely related to Thrinax.  But, it is actually more akin to Cryosophila according to recent reports.  It has a 3 to 5 inch thick trunk.  It can get over ten feet tall.  Most that I've seen in botanical gardens are about ten to fifteen feet.  The crown of leaves is fairly open.  Fruits are light colored and large.  Leaves are green, near complete and soft.  Germination of seeds is quite easily but growing them from there is more of a challenge.

I'd recommend part day sun or coastal sun for this species.  I'm not positive about cold tolerance because they are quite rare.  But, I'd guess it's about a freeze at lowest.  We have several 3g plants available.  These can be shipped quite easily.

BAD PALM SEEDS?
HOW CAN YOU TELL?
THE FLOAT TEST
THE PINCH TEST
CUT THE SEED OPEN

Many people love to germinate palm seeds and make their plants.  But, there are a few things you need to now right from the beginning if you want to successfully germinate.

1.  Get fresh seeds.  Right off the tree is best.
2.  Pick seeds that are mature, often colorful.  Green seeds germinate poorly.
3.  Remove the fruit from the seeds until you have a clean, often tan colored inner seed.  Fruit can contain chemicals that retard germination.
4.  Pinch test seeds.  Take the picked seeds (with or without fruit) and squeeze hard between two fingers.  They should never collapse.
5.  Float Test the seeds.  Palm seeds almost always sink in water.  Floaters are almost always bad.   Inner cavities of rot within the seed make them float.
6.  Cut open a few seeds.  The fruit should be white or light tan, solid and without signs of rot.  And, you definitely do not want to see inner cavities.
7.  Always soak the cleaned seeds in pure water, especially if you had seeds shipped to you.  This rehydrates them.  If seeds are right off a tree and the fruit is moist and fresh, soaking is not necessary.  But, they would still be cleaned of any fruit.

Photos here show seeds with fruit, the float test with floaters and sinkers and a few seeds cut open showing inner cavities (a bad sign).  For techniques on germination, see our article on

BRAHEA EDULIS
THE GUADALUPE FAN PALM
COLD HARDY - LOVES SUN
NEVER OVER 15 FEET TALL

We only have a limited number of the 15g size available.

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX
FILTERED LIGHT CYCAD
NEVER GETS OVER 8 FEET
RED OR ORANGE CONES
WIDE, HOLLY FERN - LIKE LEAFLETS

This medium sized South African cycad reminds most people of the Holly Fern because of the leaflet shape.  These leaflets have prominent barbs on their edges and are dark green.  A desirable form would be a plant with super wide leaflets.  I think they are more attractive.  The plant shown here is such a plant with wide leaflets.  See the second picture.  Caudex on this plant is abut 13 to 14 inches.  Plants typically don't get much caudex vertical height.  Leaves are five to six feet long.  This species tolerates strong filtered light or part day sun.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.  Cones are either red or orange with the females being more red than the males.  We offer all sizes of this species for sale.

MARKHAMIA LUTEA
NILE TULIP TREE
BILLIANT CLUSTERS OF YELLOW FLOWERS WITH RED THROATS
LARGE 25G SPECIMEN AVAILABLE

Markhamia lutea is a tropical flower tree that puts out clusters of rather large yellow flowers as shown here.  It is native to eastern and southern Africa.  In the wild, plants get to heights of thirty feet but in domestic gardens trees are usually twenty feet or less.  This is a full sun tree being grown by many in Southern California.  But, they are near impossible to find, especially with size.  This plant is the only one I have, about ten feet tall and in blossom.  It's in a 25g pot.  This species can take a freeze but will succumb in temperatures into the 20's F.

This tropical tree is native to Brazil and typically is not over about twenty to twenty-five feet.  It blossoms in the summer with clusters of pure yellow flowers.  These clusters are about a foot across.  It is cold hardy into the twenties F. and quite easy to grow for most in our area.  It wants full sun.  Shown here is the 15g size I have available.  I have or can get only limited numbers.

NICE RED OR PURPLE COLOR

This is a bright red type of Fountain Grass that is xerophytic and easy to grow.  Clumps don't get overly tall and don't run.  But, they do have Cat-tail like flowers.  The color is a dark red with a touch of green.  They like sun and are cold hardy into the mid-twenties F.  Shown here is the 5g size.  The garden photo seems to show a variety that is a bit more purple than ours, but you'll get the idea of what they look like in the garden.  These are easy to grow and a water conserving way to add color.

DASYLIRION LONGISSIMUM
THE MEXICAN GRASS PLANT
MEDIUM SIZED UNUSUAL SUN PLANT
DROUGHT TOLERANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE 15G

This interesting drought tolerant plant is native to Mexico and extremely drought tolerant.  In gardens, I've seen a few older plants with a few feet of trunk.  But, this species can actually get a trunk that is six or eight feet tall in fifty or a hundred years.  It loves hot sun.  The crown of needle like leaves is about eight feet across.  Each leaf is about the size of a knitting needle and four to six feet long.  They come to a point but are not very dangerous except perhaps to one's eye.  The plant looks like a "Pom Pom on a Trunk".  Leaf color is blue to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the teens F.  They like hot sun.  I'm offering a nice discount on these super large 15g specimen plants.  The stems almost fill the pots.

When I first saw one of these I thought "how cute is that?"  And, they are very cute.  They stay small, typically not getting over five to six feet tall mature.  The leaves are upright, green in color, two feet long and reminiscent of a cycad.  The trunk is narrow, typically three to four inches.  And, the crown of leaves is very compact and tidy.  It is very easy to trim and maintain and works very well as a companion plant in the garden floor.  It is native to South Pacific Islands including New Caledonia, Hawaii and Fiji.  It is a filtered light plant and likes plenty of water.

CHAMAEDOREA ERNESTI-AUGUSTI
VERY ATTRACTIVE DWARF SHADE PALM
TYPICALLY NOT OVER 3 FEET TALL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

Over our 40 year existence, I'd estimate that the nursery has sold several thousand of this very popular dwarf palm.  Typically we recommend putting in a small colony of them.  They look great like this and will get staggered heights.  Most garden plants are not over 3 to 4 feet tall.  But, the last picture shows a few that we've grown for decades and are head height.  Because leaves are at the top, such older plants look best with newer, smaller plants growing from the bottom.  If you have an older plant, put a few small ones at the base.  This species likes shade and has simple, non-divided leaves as shown.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.

DYPSIS NAUSEOSA
AKA DYPSIS HIGHLAND REDNECK
INTERESTING RED CROWN SHAFT PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Over the many decades we've been growing palms, I made friendship with Clayton York at Utopia Palms in Australia.  We'd chat from time to time about palms.  One of his keen interests was the palms of Madagascar.  About 15 years ago I had heard of the Dypsis species "highland redneck".  I never really knew what it was.  Clayton later described it.  The habitat photos below (c/o Palmpedia) were taken by him.  This species comes from southeastern Madagascar, has a thin trunk and gets to a height of about 40 feet. Note the red and fuzzy crown shaft in the photos.  Habitat elevation is 750 to 1000 feet.  Most are trying it in sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is presently not certain.  This species is super rare and not really seen on the market.

BUTIA CAPITATA
THE PINDO OR JELLY PALM
GREEN FORM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 25 GALLON

This single trunk South American pinnate palm is very durable and cold hardy.  It loves sun and is cold hardy to about 15 degrees F.  If you've been following our Blog, you know that there is a green form and the popular blue strain.  Both are Butia capitata.  Today I'm showing you the green form.   Most would consider this to be the "standard form".  Mature heights on both are typically15 to 20 feet in this area.  Leaves arch downwards as shown.  Mature leaf color will be green to blue green.  The blue form has definite blue leaves.  The fruit of both are edible and some people make a jelly from the fruit, thus giving a reason for one of the common names for this palm.  Growth rate is slow to medium.  The 25g on sale here are about seven years old. The photos of the mature palms below were taken at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA.

GERANIUM PLANTS, RED
NICE, GOOD SIZE 1 GALLON
GREAT FOR FULL SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL

It's always a problem for us to provide nice  year long color for sun.  By this, I mean not annual plants that die at the end of the season.  To solve this problem, we just got in a few dozen pretty and outdoor grown Geranium.  These are a great perennial flowering plant.  Mature height is several feet.  Although there's lots of colors with Geranium, the color we selected is the popular red one.  It is a good grower and will have many clusters of large red flowers.  They are in one gallon plants and just going into blossom now.  The foliage is green.  They need full sun and most folks around here have no problem growing them.  Blossoming will continue for through summer.  These are easy to ship.

These smaller Bromeliads are known for the fact that they are a terrestrial type of Bromeliad and do well planted right into the ground.  Contrast this to the epiphytic types that live on branches of trees above your head.  Small roots anchor these plants into the ground and do little in terms of absorbing nutrition.  A mature plant is usually no bigger than a dinner plate.  They take strong filtered  light or a bit of sun.  These plants are  in 4 inch pots.  We  only occasionally have them for sale.  They are a fairly rare Bromeliad to find.  We have two or three species.  All have pink and red with some brown colors.  Also, mail order is a piece of cake.

PHOENIX CANARIENSIS
THE CANARY ISLAND PALM
LARGE LANDSCAPE STATEMENT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Almost everyone recognizes this popular palm native to the Canary Islands.  Growth rate is slow.  Mature height can get over 30 feet and the trunk is quite thick.  They like full sun, are cold hardy into the teens F., and need room to grow.  We are putting 5 gallon size on super special.  This size can be mail ordered.  Usually this species is planted as a single but sometimes several together look nice (See last photo).  BTW, this price is so low that, for mail order customers, S/H may be more than the cost of the plant.  Remember, we ship plants in their pots with soil.  So, it would be a pretty big and heavy box.  Just call or email for a shipping quote to your area.

SYAGRUS BOTRYOPHORA
NATIVE TO EASTERN BRASIL
THINNER TRUNK
INTERESTING ARRANGEMENT OF LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BIG 5G PLANTS

This fairly fast growing, single trunk palm gets to a height of about 30 feet and seems to do well in coastal Southern California climates.  Although the exact cold hardiness is yet to be worked out, it takes temperatures into the upper 20's F.  It is a sun species.  The interesting thing is the arrangement of leaves on the trunk.  Note how they are widely separated and stair-step up the trunk.  Oppose this to all the foliage at the top of the trunk.  This is less apparent in old and mature trees.

REGULAR PRICE 5G $75
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G $65

Just mention this Special for this price when you order.  These plants are about 5 feet tall, so shipping is a bit more.

DICTYOSPERMA ALBUM
VARIETY RUBRA
GEORGEOUS THIN TRUNKED PALM
PROMINENT CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This attractive, single trunk, crown shafted pinnate palm is native to the Mascarene Islands.  Among enthusiasts, the  most talked about aspect of this species is that it's considered to be a monotypic species.  In other words, there may be sub-varieties of the species, but they are all just a bit different, mainly because of colors seen.  Remember, to a taxonomist, it's all about the flower and its parts.  If you stand side by side and compare palms, it doesn't matter that you'd swear they were all dramatically different.  It's just about the flowers.

This "variety" (rubra) gets to a height of thirty feet or more and has a prominent red color on the leaves (when young), the petioles  and other parts.  It is a sun species.  Cold hardiness is down into the upper twenties F.

REGULAR PRICE 1 GALLON $40

LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA
SPINELESS AUSTRALIAN CYCAD
DARK GREEN & FRIENDLY LEAVES
NEEDS ROOM IN THE GARDEN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

A few days ago we received from one of our customers about twenty Lepidozamia peoffskyana seedlings in one gallon pots.   They came from domestic seeds from his place of business.  The business had planted an assortment of these plants.  Over the years they've grown and there proved to be both sexes in the planting.  Without any hand pollination, seeds were formed.  And, they proved to be good.  He germinated a bunch and we received them recently.  They are one and two leaf seedlings.  This species will take full sun right on the coast but most enthusiasts give it part day sun or strong filtered light.  It needs some horizontal room as it makes a larger cycad.  Cold tolerance is actually quite good, perhaps into the upper teens F.  Folks are growing this plant in the SF Bay Area without a problem.  Leaves are soft to the touch and without any spines.  I am showing the 1 gallon sale plants and a few other sizes.

BECCARIOPHOENIX ALFREDII
RECENTLY DESCRIBED, MEDIUM SIZED MADAGASCAR PALM
HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON 5G SIZED PLANTS

This species of exotic palm is from the island of Madagascar.  It is the third of three Beccariophoenix species described from this palm-loaded country.  It is so sought after because some feel that it's the prettiest species of the three.  And, because is may possess the best cold hardiness.  I've documented other Beccariophoenix species tolerating temperatures below 25 degrees at our nursery.  So, this species may survive in areas like San Francisco, Phoenix and Houston.  It grows to a height of about thirty feet and does not have a crown shaft.  Leaves are long and minimally curved.  The crown of leaves are densely placed.  Growth rate is medium in most areas and along the coast it likes sun.  This species is rather hard to find.  We're putting our limited supplies of 5g plants on ten day special.

REGULAR PRICE 5G THIS SPECIES $75

This rare and hard to find species of South American fan palm was previously known as Trithrinax biflabellata.  It is not quite as blue as campestris and perhaps a bit taller when mature.  It does sucker.  The leaflet tips are softer than the pungent campestris.  On sale are these outdoor grown 15g plants.  It likes full sun and is pretty cold hardy, possibly into the upper teens F.  It is possible to mail order this larger 15g size, but we do have 5g as well.

PRITCHARDIA, THE HAWAIIAN PALM
ABOUT SIX SPECIES AVAILABLE
BIGGEST AND BEST 15G AROUND
OUTDOOR GROWN, SEEN SUN AND COLD
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE 15G PLANTS

Pritchardia are a tropical fan palm that typically get heights of fifteen to twenty-five feet.  They have lush green leaves that are flat or a bit wavy.  Often species have a lot of white tomentum on the leaf stems.  We call it the Hawaiian Palm because it's the only palm that is native to Hawaii.  Before men introduced other species, there were only Pritchardias on these islands.

For those of you who have read this Blog for a while, you'll remember that several years ago I bought out the private plant material of a nursery that was going out of business.  The species we got were all from true Hawaiian species only.  This included several hundred Pritchardias that were huge at that time in 15g plants, had been grown outdoors and seen full sun.  We put these plants in our outside growing grounds and kept up with their care.  They are now even bigger, easily the size of a boxed Pritchardia.  Sizes on some are eight feet in their pots with very thick trunks.  And, they are sun ready - instant planting material.  We have about five or six different species.

These plants take full coastal sun or part day sun inland.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F. or perhaps a bit lower.  They've seen all the cold we've had in the past three years.

TRACHYCARPUS LATISECTUS
WINDMILL PALM FROM INDIA
MEDIUM ADULT HEIGHT
RARE SPECIES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 G SIZE

This species from high elevation areas in India is most known for the fact that it's leaf segments are wider than other species.  There are two varieties.  It is a tall species, up to forty feet, with a narrow trunk of six to eight inches.  Its leaves are green with a bit of glaucous color beneath.  For this genus, the leaves are wide, sometimes up to five feet with wide segments that are divided about half way into the leaf.  The petioles are about three feet long and the leaf shape is semicircular or near totally circular.  There is a hope that this species tolerates more heat.  Cold tolerance is yet to be determined.  We're suspicious it is not as cold tolerant as other species.  It is extremely rare in cultivation with few photos available of the native population. Both photographs below are of domestic plants, the first showing Martin Gibbons in the U.K.

CHAMAEDOREA WOODSONIANA
SINGLE TRUNK FILTERED LIGHT PALM
THICK TRUNK - PROMINENT WIDE RINGS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON PLANTS

This species, along with Chamaedorea lineares, is one of the most sought after of the Chamaedorea family.  It is quick growing, gets to about 15 feet tall or more, and gets up to a 2 inch thick green trunk.  It has prominent white rings on the trunk with wide, green leaflets.  Well grown, this palm is a show stopper.  It is also super hard to find.  We've been out of them for at least six months - people always ask for them.  I just got in a limited supply of nice one gallon plants (shown) that are 18 to 24 inches tall in their pots.  This is a filtered light palm that will tolerate a freeze.

ARENGA ENGLERI
THE DWARF SUGAR PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This Asian species of suckering pinnate palm in known for several things.  First, it's cold hardy down to about 18 degrees F.  Secondly, it is durable but slow growing.  Finally, it has very fragrant blossoms.  Mature height is about ten feet.  Along the coast it takes sun or shade.  Sun exposure does not make it grow faster in my experience.  It can be grown as a container plant and is not armed.  Inland areas should grow this in filtered light.

BURRETIOKENTIA KOGHIENSIS
SUPER RARE AND ONE OF THE PRETTIEST PALMS FROM NEW CALEDONIA
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

When Jesse and I visited New Caledonia in the year 2000, one of the palms that stood out was this more rare form of Burretiokentia.  Native to Mount Koghi, this species stood to a height of about 25 feet and had a prominent white-green crown shaft.  The trunk is thin and the crown of leaves full.  I'd consider it a medium sized palm.  It is rare and hardly ever available to the public.  But, we're offering this great species at a very good price.

It take coastal sun or filtered light inland.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties.  BTW, the last two photos are from our trip to the habitat.

JUBAEA CHILENSIS
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM
STATELY AND MAGNIFICENT SPECIES
VERY COLD HARDY!
TEN DAY SPECIAL GOOD SIZED 15G

We only have a few left, but these nice sized Jubaea chilensis are going on sale.  These plants are approaching ten years old from seed!  As most know, they are unbearably slow to grow and getting a nice plant as shown in the first four photos seems to take forever.  Try it yourself some day from seed.  You'll know why it takes a decade to produce a nice sized Jubaea.  Interestingly enough, we ship a lot of this sized Chilean Wine Palms to people in colder states like Texas and South Carolina.

Ultimate height can reach at least forty feet (in several decades) and trunk diameter up to four feet.  The leaf stems are unarmed.  Seeds are large and globular as shown here.  Cold hardiness in into the mid teens F.  It's a sun species.

This New World suckering shade palm has pinnate leaves and never gets much above 8 to 9 feet.  This is the reason it's so popular.  It's not my favorite suckering Chamaedorea, but it does fit inside the home of the average house without hitting the ceiling.  Outdoors, it wants filtered light and is cold hard into the mid, perhaps lower 20's F.  The 5g on sale here are oversize, about head height or more.

All of our Heliconia are grown from rhizomes from existing and flowering plants in Southern California.  This results in large, very strong growing plants as shown here.  Heliconia schiediana can take sun or part sun, gets to a height of sever to eight feet, and flowers freely in the summer.  It is very cold hardy.  Even if a hard freeze knocks down the leaves, plants usually come back vigorously in the spring.  Flowers are red/yellow or orange/yellow.  The size we're offering presently are 5g and maybe some bigger but they've been flying out with the arrival of spring.  .

We also have from time to time several other species available.

SPECIMEN JUBAEA CHILENSIS AVAILABLE TO BUY
THE CHILEAN WINE PALM
MARKEDLY DISCOUNTED PRICE!
NEED A CRANE BUT THEY DIG QUITE WELL
A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR THE CANARY ISLAND PALM

I am helping the owner of this mature Jubaea chilensis who wishes to sell it.  In case you don't remember, this palm has the thickest trunk of any palm in the world.  And, it's the most upscale and expensive larger palm that is used on high end landscape projects.  It sort of looks like a Canary Palm but has no spines.  It's felt to be much more desirable than a Canary.  The plant I'm presenting is in the ground in the San Francisco Bay area and available right now.  Mature Chilean Wine Palms are never cheap to purchase.  But, this seller is willing to sell it for less than half the going retail price.

Call me for details and pricing - you'll be pleased.  But, remember that a digging crew and crane will be needed.  It's close to a street with what appears to be good access for digging.  It has approximately 20 feet of woody trunk.  Trunk diameter is about three feet.  The plant available is shown in the first five pictures here.  Following are garden pictures of other trees.  There are so few mature specimens available of this species, that it's quite typical for a dug plant to be transported quite long distances to their eventual new home.  And, if found through a usual supplier, they'd be twice the price to you.  So, this tree is a great opportunity for someone.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS
NURSERY CREDIT FOR USED PLASTIC POTS

I like to remind plant enthusiasts to recycle their plastic containers.  We will take them and give you a credit toward any purchase at the nursery.  Or, if you just don't know what to do with them and are conservative minded, drop them off at our nursery location.  We'll put them to good use.  We've been doing this for decades and think it's the right thing to do for the environment.  We are especially looking for larger pots, 15g and bigger.  We also really appreciate 7g and citrus pots.  However, tiny pots like 4 or 6 inch are not containers that we really utilize.

So, don't clutter the environment by giving them to the garbage man or your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!

BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM

BRAHEA CLARA
BLUE SINGLE TRUNK MEXICAN PALM
SUPER COLD HARDY

This palm is quite similar to the more common Brahea armata.  It loves sun, takes cold to 15 degrees and is blue in color.  It gets to a height of no more than 20 feet.  Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan Palm, it has longer petioles and is faster growing.  Another curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.  Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more like a bad set of shark's teeth as shown here.

BRAHEA DECUMBENS

BLUE, DWARF AND SUCKERING
EXCELLENT COLD HARDY SMALLER PALM

This suckering species of fan palm develops a blue color with age and sun.  Shown is a 5g.  We never can keep them in stock to get them to 15g.  They love hot sun, get to a height of no more than six feet and sucker.  this is an ideal palm where views are a concern.  They are very slow growing.

BUTIA X SYAGRUS
THE MULE PALM
HYBRID THAT LOOKS LIKE NEITHER PARENT

This surprisingly very cold hardy palm is being grown in areas that routinely see bad weather.  When Queen Palms die in Tucson, AZ, this one survives.  It gets to 25 feet and loves hot sun.  Some say that, when mature, they look a little bit like a Coconut.  It's also a very good growing hybrid with lots of vigor.  It likes sun and is cold hardy to about 16 or 17 degrees.

COPERNICIA ALBA
TALL THIN TRUNK
SINGLE STEM FAN PALM

Copernicia is a rare genus of fan palms mostly native to Caribbean Islands such as Cuba.  This species has a thin trunk and gets over 40 feet tall.  For an exotic genus, it's surprisingly cold hardy perhaps into the upper teens F.  It loves sun and heat.

JUBAEA CHILENSIS
CHILEAN WINE PALM
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM

This thick trunked pinnate palm is slow growing but manages to get a trunk fatter than any other palm.  Native to Chile, it can reach a height of 40 feet and trunk diameter of 4 feet.  It loves hot sun and is cold hardy to 16 degrees.  The 15g plant shown here is 10 years old.  This is why this species is more costly than other palms.  The trunk is also smooth as shown here with no attached leaf bases.

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS

THE CHINESE FAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM SIZE

This Asian species never really gets to a height much above 25 feet.  It's so slow growing that anything over ten feet seems to take an eternity.  It has a twelve inch thick trunk and flat green leaves.  In most areas it takes full sun but also tolerates filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 18 degrees F.

LIVISTONA DECIPIENS
AKA LIVISTONA DECORA
MEDIUM TO TALL HEIGHT, THIN TRUNK

This Australian fan palm can get over 40 feet tall, has a thin trunk and droopy leaflets.   Because of the latter fact it's known as the Ribbon Palm.  Leaflets hang toward the ground.  It likes full sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It's quite handsome.

PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
CLUMPING SPECIES MEDIUM SIZE

This is a type of Date Palm that clusters.  It gets its name from the fact that trunks recline (lean) with age and height.  It has a variable height.  But, you can count on at least 15 feet.  Some clumps get taller.  It loves sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.

PHOENIX THEOPHRASTI
THE CRETAN DATE PALM
BUSHY AND NOT TOO TALL

This Date Palm is native to the island of Crete, southern Greece and some nearby islands.  It is a suckering palm and not quite as tall as the Phoenix dactylifera.  Its dates are not edible.  Leaf color is typically lime green.  Height can get up to thirty feet.  Leaves are quite plumose.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees or lower and it loves full and hot sun.

SABAL CAUSIARUM
TALL FAN PALM
THICK CONCRETE LIKE TRUNKS

This Caribbean fan palm can get rather tall, up to fifty feet.  Its remarkable characteristic are the thick, concrete colored and appearing trunks.  They are really impressive and get up to two feet thick.  Leaf color is blue green.  This palm loves sun and is cold hardy into the mid to upper teens F.

SABAL MINOR
THE SMALLEST SABAL
DWARF PALM - SIX FEET TALL

This fan palm is native to the southeastern part of the U.S.  It rarely gets over six feet tall.  It puts out blossoms that are taller than the leaves, producing many small black seeds.  Leaves are sort of large compared to its dwarf height.  It can take sun or shade and is cold hardy to 15 degrees.

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
SUPER COLD HARDY
SMALL, CUTE LEAVES

This Asian species of Windmill Palm is quite difficult to find.  That's because it's very slow growing.  The 15g plant shown here is about 8 years old.  They typically don't get tall.  In a few decades, a ten foot palm could be expected.  They love full sun and are cold hardy to 15 degrees F.  Leaves are quite small and flat as shown here.

SYAGRUS SCHIZOPHYLLA X ROMANZOFFIANA

THE COCONUT QUEEN
BEAUTIFUL HYBRID PALM YET COLD HARDY

We don't know as of yet the cold hardiness of this very handsome hybrid palm developed in Thailand.  It's quite a new thing.  It is prettier than both parents.  Anticipated height is 30 feet, so it's shorter than a standard Queen Palm.  It likes full sun and appears to be cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.

TRITHRINAX ACANTHICOMA
AKA TRITHRINAS BRASILIENSIS
MEDIUM HEIGHT, SPINEY TRUNK

This South American, single trunk fan palm is unlike some of its suckering kin below.  This plant gets to a height of about 20 feet and has a random pattern of long spines protruding from the trunk.  Leaves are green, medium sized.  It likes sun and is cold hardy well into the upper teens F.  The trunk is indeed different - liked by some, hated by others.

A LOOK AT THE FRONT OF THE NURSERY
PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR
ALMA AND THE PLANTS

Recently, on a drizzling day, sort of gray and gloomy, the following photos were taken by Alma.  Regardless, we were quite busy with customers at the nursery.  Somehow Alma found the time to take pictures of the front entrance to our nursery.  These pictures show the unique combination of palms, cycads and succulents that we're offering.  You can see how nicely they all blend together.  I hope the gorgeous blue Encephalartos show well in these pictures.  They are huge and unique.

PLANT BROKER VERSUS NURSERYMAN
WHAT SOME SELLERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW
HOW TO TELL WHICH IS WHICH

There's a dirty little secret among people who sell plants.  That secret is that some people don't "grow plants" but merely buy someone else's plants, try to sell them to you and make it appear that they propagate plants.  And, unfortunately, they are often brokering plants grown elsewhere, in more tropical areas that won't do as well as locally grown plants.  Why would this be a secret?  Because they don't want you to go looking for their sources.  Otherwise, you wouldn't buy from them.

How do you tell who is who?  How do you know if a "nursery" is growing their own plant material or just brokering?  It's quite simple.  Look inside the nursery for evidence of germination.  Look for small plants in addition to large ones.  Look for plants of the same species in many sizes.  If you see none of these things, perhaps just one size of a given plant, you're almost guaranteed that that person is just selling other nursery's material.

Yes, Jungle Music does bring in plants from other sources.  But, it's most often young seedlings when we do.  And we then grow them up for years to the large palms your know us for.  I've found that I can't germinate everything.  We need some help.  So, we've had decades of history with reliable germinators who sometimes germinate seeds for us.  And, when we do find larger and super desirable things, we may bring them in.  But, 99% of our material we've grown ourselves.  Just looking at the our nursery, you realize this.  We've got a quarter million plants.

So, don't get fooled.  Deal with someone who really knows the plants and has been growing them himself.  The pictures here show you some of the two miles of tables we put our plants on.  You'll see plants of all sizes - from new seedlings to 5g, 15g and larger plants.  I've shown a lot of seedlings here and flats of small plants.  I thought you'd like to know this.

FLOWERING ANTHURIUM
RED, PINK, WHITE AND OTHERS

Flowering Anthurium are low profile plants that rarely get over 18 inches tall.  They like filtered light and have a surprisingly long flowering season.  In fact, some will continue to put out flowers until fall.  Flower sizes vary from about 2 inches up to 4 inches across.  An individual flower may last well over a month.  Plants are also quite durable with thick, prominently veined leaves.

COLEUS, LOTS OF COLORS
LARGE, FULL PLANTS

Coleus is a type of plant that will get quite big and full.  They can grow in partial sun but filtered light enhances their colors.  They need a bit of trimming of ends of stems to keep them from getting too large.   These plants are already two by two feet in size.  Blossoms should be pinched off as well.  Colors are stunning.  They are a bit cold sensitive but with some protection, many folks get them to winter over.  They make a stunning plant for a patio container.

FICUS DAMMAROPSIS
LARGE 5G PLANTS
VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND

This unique species of tropical tree is known for it's huge leaves that are pleated, reach up to three feet long and have red veins.  It is one of the most collectible trees in the world.  It is very difficult to propagate and rarely seen for sale.  The plants we have now came from a special propagating company and will be gone quickly.  And, you can save.  Google this plant, look at it and you'll "have to have one".  I've got one 15 feet tall in my garden. It's survived San Diego weather for three decades.  Although not inexpensive, it's a "must have" species.  Recently they've been out of inventory and I know of no one making new plants right now.

LIGULARIA TUSSILANGINEA
LILY-LIKE, FLAT GREEN LEAVES
YELLOW BLOSSOMS IN FALL
TAKES SUN - LIKES WATER

This is an interesting plant we propagate ourselves from seeds of existing plants.  They form small clusters of shiny green leaf plants that don't get over 18 inches.  Flowers come in the fall are yellow, daisy-like and medium sized.  This species enjoys water and will droop over with too little water.  Then, when given water, they bounce right back.  It's a good "indicator plant" for how well you are watering the garden.  They'll take sun in many areas or part day sun.  Available 1g, 2g and some 5g plants.

ALOCASIA CAL-ODORA
THE MINIATURE ELEPHANT EAR
NEVER OVER ABOUT THREE FEET TALL

Customers often shy away from the Elephant Ear Alocasia because of their potential size.  There is even one species that gets super tall and almost takes over the garden.  But, what I'm showing you here is a true dwarf with plants that never get much above your knees.  The leaves are a foot wide and color is green.  They are an ideal plant where you want a low profile companion plant to cover the garden floor.

This species can take full coastal sun or part day sun and filtered light in all areas.  They do like and respond to water.  We sell a ton of these but do have limited supplies.  When people see how they perform they often come back for more.

We also really appreciate 7g pots and citrus pots.

So, don't give them to the garbage man for your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!

THIS PALM, CYCAD AND TROPICAL PLANT BLOG
WHY DID I CREATE IT?
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
HOW DO I WRITE MY POSTS AND SELECT TOPICS?

PRESENTLY GOING ON SIX YEARS, THOUSANDS OF POSTS.

For those of you who know our Website, you are aware of the fact that this site offers a tremendous amount of information on the palms, cycads and an assortment of tropical plants.  I started this website over twenty years ago.  It was one of the first websites in the world on palms and cycads.  And, it is presently one of the largest for sure.  Yes, we are a nursery and, to survive and support this Site, we must sell our plants.  But, as I looked at internet sites over time, I found it quite disappointing that, with most plant sites, it is apparent that the only motive of sites was to sell their products.  Little information was shared.  But, in my opinion, the point of the Internet was to share information.   So, our website from its inception had the mission of offering free information for the reader to learn about the plants, their culture and educate them on species they could grow.  To accomplish this I've written and posted about a hundred articles on plants and species.

Doing this was made easier by the fact that I've been studying, growing and learning about palms and cycads now for almost forty years.  I've been involved with and learned from many plant organizations and am the past President of the International Palm Society and the Palm Society of Southern California.  And, I've traveled the world multiple times studying plants in gardens and habitats.  This allowed me to accumulate literally tens of thousands of photographs over the years.  And, as Jungle Music began in 1977, I've had decades of experience with growing the plants and learning their culture.  The nursery has also been a great source of feedback from customers.  I've learned the successes and losses they've had and how any given species grew for them.  The latter has been in invaluable part of gaining knowledge about the plants.  One can read forever, but actually growing, observing and caring for the plants is, in my opinion, the best source of learning.

Plant reference books tend to be very scientific.  They are written typically by taxonomists who use terms and phrases that few can understand.  Some are not this way, but the majority are.  And, practical cultural information is rarely present, especially not for different growing areas.  People want to know "Can I grow it?".  My goal at this Site has been to share information that people could understand and use, especially in the selection of the right species for their gardens.

Years ago I spent large amounts of time making contributions to discussion sites and groups on the Internet.  But, it became apparent that all this information is lost within a month or two.  Old posts on servers are literally just deleted.  And, they tend to be a difficult way to gather good information.  And, discussion groups are notorious for not being available to search engines.  So, I abandoned discussion groups and started this Blog four years ago with the goal of making a resource point for plant information that would persist over time.  Presently there are thousands of posts on the threads of this Blog.  My next project is to make information from the years of this Blog to be presented in an easily searchable format, organized by species, groups or cultural areas.  Hopefully this will be available in the next twelve months.

With a daily schedule like a farmer, I tend to get up very early in the morning.  It's quiet before the sun comes up and there's few distractions.  And, as I sit down at my computer, I have no idea what I'm going to write about any given morning nor what I will put on one of our Ten Day Specials.  I just think of a subject and do it right then and there.  I might have an idea from the day before or remember a confusion people have on a subject that I'd like to clarify.  I learn at the nursery the most common things that people don't understand.   I am convinced that, if one read this blog on a repetitive basis for a year or so, that person would become very knowledgeable and a lot more comfortable with growing rare species.

Outside my office window I can see into my garden for inspiration.  The garden at dawn is just magical.  And, this is what I've done this morning.  Every time I post on this Blog, it takes me several hours.  I try to add interesting anecdotes, stories and cultural tips.  Hopefully I've got some good and recent photographs the reader hasn't seen.  I try to explain terms that might stump the reader.  Some "experts" may not agree with everything I put here, but posts are my viewpoint on the subject.  I mostly utilize my own photos, but will credit those from friends or acquaintances when used.   I invite anyone with pictures or information about cool species to contact me.  I may add it to this Blog.  And, I always give credit for any donated photographs.

Hopefully, as I travel, visit more gardens and faraway parts of the world, I can share more with you over time.  It does amaze me when I come across a species or topic that I've never discussed on the Blog.  But, it happens all the time.  My promise to you is I will continue this Blog for as long as I can and continually try to improve it and make it interesting.  Thank you for reading.

Note to readers: On review, this is a long winded post.  If you read to this point, as a reward to you for your perseverance, email me and I'll send you a 15% off coupon.

PLANTS OUTDOORS AT THE NURSERY

About half of our nursery plants are grown outdoors at the nursery.  The other half are inside our greenhouses.  We have twelve greenhouses.  In general, the outdoor plants are acclimated better to our weather or sun and tend to be larger and more mature in size.

For those of you who haven't visited us, our street front is about three hundred feet long in a residential neighborhood.  We chose such a neighborhood on purpose because our city is known for its nurseries and green attitude.  Nurseries are nestled among homes.  It's quite inviting to visit nurseries here.  We have several acres overall dedicated to the plants.  This includes shaded or shade cloth areas, hot sun areas, a display garden area and a large propagation and growing grounds.  We also host an educational center and lecture hall.  We are just minutes off the major freeway (Fwy 5) in our town of Encinitas, California.  So, it's an easy trip.  Please drop in a visit us.
