ZAMIA FURFURACEA
THE CARDBOARD CYCAD
DIVISION OF A LARGE MATURE CLUMP
MAKING INDIVIDUAL POTTED PLANTS

This post is to tell you about our experience in taking a mature clump of Zamia furfuracea and creating smaller, individual potted plants for the nursery.   We bought a large collection of cycads about three years ago.  These were in the ground.  Included was a large clump of the Cardboard Cycad with about twenties heads.  The clump measured six feet by six feet across.  The interesting thing is that all these individual caudexes were attached so tightly that they could not be separated.  It was as if it was just one massive caudex with individual appearing heads of leaves.

So, we had to use cutting equipment to separate and remove each head - one at a time.  We didn't have any guarantee that any of these would live.  After dividing each one apart, we put these into pure pumice and waited three years.  One by one, they all flushed out leaves.  Below  in the first four photos are two individual plants that came from this procedure.  These were just taken a few days ago.  In these first photos they are still in the pumice.  We took them out of pumice and then put them into cycad soil.  Following these shots you'll see two plants with their exposed roots after removal from the pumice (which usually just falls away).  The last photos show these two plants repotted with one garden plant.  Of note the latter is much smaller than the clump we divided up.  Interestingly, after division we essentially didn't lose one plant.  Of course, all are gorgeous now with good roots.  And, all are for sale.

SCHIPPIA CONCOLOR
THE SILVER PIMENTO PALM
SMALL MATURE SIZE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G PLANTS

This species is a rare and hard to find semi-dwarf fan palm from Belize.  There is little published on it.  It is green in color and leaf segments make almost a complete filling of the leaf.  The trunk is thin and mature height probably averages under ten feet.   It does not sucker and really doesn't resemble many of the other small fan palms.  It makes attractive white fruit and seeds are not difficult to germinate.  Seed availability is the problem.  We're putting 2 year old one gallons on special.  We have limited numbers.  This species can take some sun but I'd be careful with full sun - especially far inland.  Cold tolerance is not well established.  Note the plants on special are shown in the first row of photos.  We no longer have 2 gallon as also shown.

REGULAR PRICE 1G THIS SPECIES $45
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $35

Easy to ship.  Just mention this Special when ordering to get this price.  I wish to thank TS for the last photo shown here.

ANTHURIUM SPECIES
PLANTS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION
ALL RARE AND UNUSUAL
ALL FOR SALE

Anthurium are rare and exotic smaller plants that often live epiphytically in trees.  There are avid collectors of just this type of plant.  Some are super exotic appearing.  One has to be careful with cold exposure with these plants.  Most require filtered light.

Several years ago we acquired a collection of exotic companion plants from a private collector in San Diego.  Some of you might remember this.  Shown below are four rare Anthuriums.  We don't have species names on the first three - but the last one is Anthurium plowmanii.  Interestingly, the latter has some variegated leaves.  All are for sale.  But, we have no back ups or other plants of these individual plants.  If interested in any, please let us know.

HOWEA FORSTERIANA
THE KENTIA PALM
EXOTIC & TROPICAL - GREAT PALM FOR SO CAL
TEN DAY SPECIAL SINGLE 15G PLANTS

This popular single trunk palm species is native to Lord Howe Island.  Enthusiast have found that this is a superb species for our locality, either in full sun along the coast or filtered light far inland.  It has a cold tolerance of about 24 to 25 degrees F.  It is a slow growing species.  Below I'm showing you nice "singles" that are about seven years old.  These have been outdoor grown and some have seen quite a bit of sun.  Be aware this species is often sold as a "multiple" with several in the same pot.  But, as a single, they grow faster and some feel appear more beautiful.  This species also does great indoors and is one of the most popular interior palms around.  The first five photos are of the size we have on special.  But, we also have larger and smaller plants for sale as shown in the last row of photos.

MACROZAMIA MIQUELII
MEDIUM SIZED CYCAD
TOLERATES SUN OR SHADE
RECENT ARRIVAL BOXED SPECIMENS
SEVERAL IN CONE

Native to Australia in the New South Whales and southern Queensland areas, this medium sized cycad has flat green leaves with leaflets that droop down somewhat.  The inner portion of the leaflets has a yellow to white area next to the leaf stem.  Overall size is not that large.  Trunks can get to about a foot tall with leaves about four feet long.  The plants we just got in are about 15 years old and we received two plants with male cones (see photo).

Culturally, this is an easy species to grow.  It tolerates full sun on the coast but also does great in part day sun or strong filtered light.  Cold tolerance is well into the lower 20's F. or colder.  The plants offered here have been outdoor grown in the northern San Diego County area and are in 24 inch plastic boxes.  Limited numbers are available.  Macrozamia miquelii is not easy to find and near impossible to find in the size I'm offering here.  As this is a slow growing species, this is a great size to guarantee success in the garden.  That last photo in habitat was taken by C.G.  I've also shown a photo of a tree pot juvenile plant.

ARENGA PINNATA
THE SUGAR PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

As many of you know, Arengas are usually suckering palms.  But, there are several single trunk species.  Arenga pinnata is one of these.  It is felt to be native to Indonesia and is a large palm.  It is a pinnate palm with a fibrous trunk made from woven fibers.  Overall height is forty to fifty feet and the trunk gets to a diameter of two feet.  The leaves are held upright and can be over twenty feet long.  The leaflets, like all Arenga, has jagged terminal ends.

This is a monocarpic species and will die when the plant flowers.  Other suckering Arenga has new trunks to replace dying flowering trunks.  But, since this species has only one trunk, like a Caryota it will be gone a few years after the flowers appear.  The Sugar Palm is a full sun species with cold tolerance into the mid-twenties F.  Shown here are some 5g nursery plants and photos of mature specimens.  Note the woven material on the trunk.  It is very interesting to see in person.

ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII
LARGER CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL ANY 15G PLANT WE HAVE!

This unique and larger cycad is native to Uganda.  In fact, at one point it was called the "Uganda Giant Cycad".  This is because it has leaves that extend almost straight up toward the sky and can be twelve feet long or more.  Leaflets are narrow and armed with small spines.  The caudex is a light color and in the wild can be up to ten feet tall.  Historically, as this species is similar to E. laurentianus, it was called also "Encephalartos laurentianus Lake George", referring to its specific habitat.  The nursery plants I'm showing today are multiple recently acquired and outdoor grown 15g plants.  We have other sizes as well, both larger and smaller.  The last photo shows one of our boxed specimens.  Note the appearance of these plants with their long leaves with narrow leaflets.  Enthusiasts love this species because it's a good growing cycad.  Right on the coast I'd give it half day sun.  It's not quite a sun-tolerant as many of the South African species.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.

DICHORISANDRA THYRIFLORA
THE BLUE GINGER - HARD TO FIND
TEN DAY SPECIAL 7G PLANTS

This is actually not a true Ginger at all.  It is native to all areas of the new world including the U.S.  It produces actual blue flowers.  We have a limited number of 7g for sale.  They are quite nice and we're putting them on special.  They are in very limited numbers.  When these are gone, there may be no more until next year.  This species wants filtered light in a  warmer coastal area.  In somewhat colder regions, they may freeze but usually the underground bulbs come back in spring.  They get to about five feet tall. This plant is not for full, hot sun.

DYPSIS PLUMOSA
SINGLE TRUNK, THIN TRUNK
PROBABLE MADAGASCAR SPECIES
TEN DAY SPECIAL THREE SIZES!

This single trunk species of pinnate palm is probably from Madagascar although no one knows for sure.  In California, it is rather thin trunked - five to six inches thick.  In tropical areas it is more husky.  Leaves are plumose with very thin leaflets.  It likes heat and full sun.  This might be a good thing for those of you in inland areas.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.

PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA - MEDJOOL VARIETY
THE TRUE DATE PALM
TEN DAY SALE 5 GALLON PLANTS

This is a great cold hardy plant, being able to tolerate temperatures down into the mid-teens F.  It is hard to find this cultivar of the True Date Palm.  This is the one that gets blue and makes the best tasting dates.  The plants I'm offering on special were grown in a greenhouse so they are not showing that blue color yet.  But, they will when given direct sun and heat.  Remember, you need a male and female to get dates and the female bears the fruit.

These are nice 5g plants about three to four feet tall.  They demand full sun, can get up to 40 feet tall and inherently can sucker.  One would remove the suckers if he wants a single trunk.

REGULAR PRICE 5G THIS SPECIES $75
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $55

These are easy to ship.  Just remember to mention this Special so you get the discount. The fifth and six figures are stock photos to demonstrate the color.  They are not the plants on special today.  Of note, we only have limited numbers of these 5g plants available.  Don't dally.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEAFLETS
COLLAGE OF CLOSE UP PHOTOS
SHOWS DIVERSITY OF LEAF APPEARANCES

This is a "just for fun" post of many close up photographs of the leaflets of an assortment of unusual Encephalartos species from either South or Central Africa.  I am showing you these to demonstrate the diversity of the leaflets of this genus as a whole.  Some are blue.  And, there's many colors of green.  Leaflet shapes are also quite varied. You'll see shorter leaflets compared to long narrow ones.  Some are spiny, others are more smooth at their margins.  The texture on some are smooth and shiny whereas others are furry showing hairs.  Some stack on each other, others are widely spaced.  Some are prominently veined.  Many pictures were taken twelve inches away while others show more leaflets, taken at two feet.  I'll not get into mentioning the species shown here but rather show them as a whole so you see how different they are from each other.  All photos were taken on nursery plants recently.

INTERIOR QUALITY PALMS - PERFECT CONDITION
ALL AVAILABLE NOW AND DESIRABLE SIZE FOR MAIL ORDERING
PLANTS IMPORTED FROM HAWAII

Most of the plants you'll purchase from nurseries have been grown at that nursery and has seen all the aspects of weather.  This may include cold weather, wind, rain or hail, and trauma from being moved around in a nursery.  Opposed to this are plants that were grown specifically for interior-scapes.  This means plants are instantly ready for bank lobbies, hotels, professional offices and upscale businesses.   They are also perfect for interior usage in your home.  When one purchases such plants they are often sold with a contract for professional maintenance.  We do not do the latter, but we can provide the same top quality interior palms for you home or business.  And, we can offer advice on how you can maintain the plants.

Below are some examples of sizes that can be mail ordered or easily delivered.  Most are five to seven feet tall.  Both larger and smaller sizes may be available.  This is the perfect size for most home and business applications.  Availability changes over time.  These plants are beautiful and without any blemishes, scars on the leaves or unsightly leaflets.  They have been grown in a tropical area, typically Hawaii, and pampered to look beautiful.  Be aware that interior quality palms are more expensive than regular nursery stock.  But, some customers demand this quality.  If you see a species you like but don't want interior quality, most likely we offer it as well as part of our regular inventory.

If you want any of these plants, just drop by the nursery or give us a call for mail order.  - 619 291 4605
As these are imported plants from tropical areas, availability changes over time but most can be special ordered if we don't have them.

HOWEA BELMOREANA
THE BELMORE SENTRY PALM / CURLY PALM
THE "OTHER TYPE OF KENTIA"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This species of single trunk, "non-crown shafted" pinnate palm is native to medium elevations on Lord Howe Island.  At one time is was possible to import seeds of this desirable palm along with Hedyscepe and Lepidorrhachis.  Because of conservation laws, the island can no longer legally export seeds or seedlings.  This has created a shortage of the more rare species from this locality.

Howea belmoreana is different from the Howea forsteriana (classic Kentia Palm) as it has curved leaves and an umbrella-shaped crown.  It also might be a bit more cold hardy.  It prefers filtered light or a little sun inland and can take more sun right on the coast.  Cold tolerance is about 24 degrees F.  Growth rate, like the Kentia, is slow.  The 5g shown on special here are fairly nice.  They were potted up in early winter from over-sized one gallon.  These can be mail ordered.

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS
A MORE PETITE SPECIES OF THE WINDMILL PALM
SMALL, STIFF LEAVES
EXCELLENT COLD HARDINESS
TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This interesting palm, known as the Dwarf Chusan Palm, does not have a well known natural habitat.  Some think it may have originated with a dwarf cultivar of T. fortunei.
It is very slow growing with a hairy trunk.  Leaves mature are about two feet across, stiff and flat and do not flex down at the ends.  A decades old plant may have a trunk under ten feet tall.  It wants full sun and may be equally as cold hardy (down to 15 degree F. or colder) as the common Windmill Palm.  The bands on special are three years old and already showing their fan leaves.

SOME UNUSUAL COLD HARDY PALMS AND CYCADS
AN ASSORTMENT OF IDEAS - A "SAMPLER"
ALL THESE SPECIES TOLERATE 22 DEGREES F. OR LESS
SOME DOWN TO 15 DEGREES!

Whether you live in CA, TX or the Gulf States, there are a lot of unusual palms and cycads that you can grow that are very cold tolerant species.  Over our history, we have helped many hundreds of customers from cold areas pick out great but different species that have proven for them to be good growers.  You don't have to only accept the common species available in your area.  Below is a sampler in random order to give you some ideas.  We certainly have dozens more species that would probably do well for you.

All the plants shown here will tolerate temperatures down to about 22 degrees or lower.  Some will even go down to the mid-teens F.  The Encephalartos need cold protection below 20 degrees.  Plants shown here are mostly 15 gallon size with a few 5 gallons.

We have all these species available for sale and
can work out the most affordable shipping method to get plants right to your door.  If you live in Sacramento, the SF Bay area, Houston, northern Florida or other colder areas, you may be able to grow all or most of these plants.  We also have smaller sizes available that we ship through Federal Express.  Contact us and we'll work out the best species for your area.  Remember, this is only a "sampler" and that we have many more desirable cold hardy species than shown here.

AGAVE VILMORINIANA
OCTOPUS AGAVE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

This species of Agave in native to northern Mexico with perhaps extension into the U.S.  It is not a large plant.  Mature height is up to four feet with a similar spread of the leaves.  The leaves are thick and fleshy and soft at the end.  There is no terminal hard point to them.  The leaves go out and then curve downward.  They are slow growing, green to blue-green in color.  Culturally, they are xerophytic with low water requirements, are somewhat tropical appearing for an Agave and like full, hot sun.  By the way, they get their common name b/c of their mature appearance (last photo) that sort of resembles an octopus.

DYPSIS LUTESCENS
THE ARECA PALM
10G PLANTS - SEVEN FEET TALL
THE BEST "NEIGHBOR BLOCKER"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 10G/SQUAT 15G PLANTS

This is an attractive, suckering, thin trunked palm species is from Madagascar or surrounding areas.  The number one reason people buy this species is "to hide something".  By this, I mean they want to hide a neighbor, an ugly next door structure, an unsightly fence, the side of a garage, etc.  This is an ideal species for this purpose as it suckers and is fairly dense.  You can't see through it well.  Mature height averages 14 feet in California.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  Trunk diameter is about 3 inches.  It'll take full sun along the coast and far inland areas must give it only morning or filtered sun.  I am offering nice squat 10 & 15g plants on special for ten days.  They are about 8 feet tall in their pots.  We do have limited numbers of larger and smaller sizes available.

PRITCHARDIA MUNROI
EXTREMELY RARE HAWAIIAN FAN PALM
MEDIUM SIZE - HEIGHT TO FIFTEEN FEET
TEN DAY SPECIAL MASSIVE 5 GALLON PLANTS

This Hawaiian species of Pritchardia is native to the eastern and drier parts of the island of Molokai.  It was named after a botanist who worked their the habitat.  It gets to a height of about five meters with typical leaf width four to five feet.  It has a long green leaf stem.  Essentially all of the Hawaiian Pritchardias can be grown in Southern CA.  The species from the South Pacific are problematical because of our cold winters.  This species takes full sun right along the coast but wants part day sun or filtered light inland.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  The 3 or 5 gallon plants on special are absolute huge and massive for their containers.  They are over four feet tall, more like a 7 gallon sized plant.  We have limited numbers this size.  My thanks to friend T.S. for usage of the next to last photo.

ENCEPHALARTOS TEGULANEUS
RARE CYCAD FROM KENYA
UPRIGHT LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a large Central African cycad with an erect trunk up to thirty feet that is native to Mt. Lolokwe in the center of Kenya.  It is a fairly high elevation plant, up to 2000 feet natively.  As shown in the photos, leaves are four to six feet long and go upwards at about a 60 degree angle.  Color is a gray-green, definitely not a lime color.  The leaves are basically flat in cross section.  Leaflets are thin, crowded and perhaps slightly cupper - and are spiny along the margins.

Like most cycads, this species likes good draining soil.  I'd recommend less than full sun with perhaps half day sun along the coast.  Inland areas would require bright filtered light. At our nursery, this species tolerated 25 degrees F. with no problem.  I suspect the coldest it will take is a few degrees below this.  Although this species is getting near impossible to find, we do have an assortment of sizes available including a large, near coning boxed plant. We are presently offering new seedlings on Special.  These are the first seedlings we've offered in many years and are shown in the first four photos.  These photos were taken a ways back so most of these seedlings are now further along.  I am also showing several other sizes of nursery plants.

GIANT TIMBER BAMBOO
DESIRABLE VARIEGATED FORM
GREEN STRIPES ON YELLOW STEMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL

I am not a Bamboo expert in any way.  I grow some plants but do not specialize in it.  But, I've always liked looking at the trunks of the variegated Timber Bamboo.  This species is a large bamboo and can get over thirty feet tall.  The stems are yellow with green stripes.  It likes sun and needs lots of water.  Nursery plants are from divisions of existing plants.  Such is the case with this seven foot tall plant we have for sale.  I can get more of these by special order.  But, right now I'm offering them at a discount.  This type of bamboo is never inexpensive.  Also, the trunks get thick, up to at least three to four inches thick. I've heard it can be grown as a houseplant in a bright room.

VARIEGATED SHELL GINGER
5G SIZE AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL

This is a super popular variety of ginger that blossoms in the summer.  Blossoms are white with yellow and red throats.  Mature height of these plants is six to seven feet.  The leaves are prominently variegated with lighter green and yellow.  Blossoms are long lived but not fragrant.  Blossoms occur during the summer.  I think they do best in part day sun although right on the coast folks grow them in full sun.  Cold tolerance is one of the better for ginger, probably the mid-twenties F.  The last photo shows our 15g size of the green form of this species which is not on sale right now.

BRAHEA SUPER SILVER

TEN DAY SPECIAL 2 GALLON PLANTS

About three or four years ago we ran out of this un-named but super desirable blue Brahea.  It resembles a Brahea armata but is faster growing, gets taller and has a much thinner trunk.  It is native to Mexico.  Seeds have only been available twice.  The last batch came out an estimated seven years ago.  If you are in a cold area or love blue palms, you have to try one of these.  And, they are on sale!  Color will be blue when outdoors.  Cold hardiness is into the teens F.  I wants heat and full sun.  Did you get that these are super rare and hard to find?

CRYOSOPHILA STAURACANTHA
SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED TROPICAL FAN PALM

SILVER UNDERSIDE TO THE LEAVES
MODIFIED SPINES ON TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2 GALLON SIZE

This single trunk fan palm is native to Southern Mexico and parts of Central America.  It can get up to a height of 25 feet but most garden specimens are under 15 feet.  Two things are quite noteworthy:  First, the undersides of the leaves are a silver-white.  A picture below of a nursery plant shows this.  Secondly, the trunk is narrow and covered with "modified" spines.  They are not real sharp and are not true spines.  The dorsal side of the leaves is green.  This palm likes strong filtered light and right on the coast may take part day sun.  Cold tolerance is estimated to be in the high 20's F.  Growth rate is medium.  The mature plant photo by Tobias Spanner shows a near mature tree.  You have to have an overhead crown of leaves to really see the silver color.

We're offering our 2 gallon size on special.  They are shown in the first four photos below.

ENCEPHALARTOS LAURENTIANUS
KWANGO GIANT CYCAD
CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
LONGEST LEAVES OF ANY CYCAD
TEN DAY SPECIAL CITRUS POT PLANTS

Several decades ago, one could only dream of every obtaining an Encephalartos laurentianus.  This was because its locality was so remote in Uganda that few ever traveled to the habitat.  Couple this with the political instabilities and risks of the region, and you'd understand how seeds were seldom available.  Fortunately, through a few botanical gardens, seeds eventually did get distributed.  Even with this, this species is unbelievably rare to locate.

It is known for having the longest leaves of any cycad.  They tend to go upwards and can be over 20 feet long.  An identifying hallmark of this species in nurseries are the abundance of spines at the ends of the long leaflets.  You can see this on the close up leaflet pictures.  Leaflets can get up to about 20 inches long, are fairly wide and somewhat cupped.  Trunks will slowly form.  With the long length of the leaves, plants can tower overhead.

Being Central African, this species doesn't have the cold hardiness of South African cycads.  But, many are growing it in this area.  I'd recommend sun or part day sun.  Cold hardiness is down to a bit below a freeze.  Shown here are a boxed plant, a 15g and (last row below) some citrus pots on special.  These citrus pot plants are not huge but I'm offering an exceptional price on them.  Remember, seeds are unbelievably expensive.  They can be shipped easily - depending on your weather.

These New World epiphytic plants are great fun.  They are one of the many genera of Bromeliads.  Native to regions stretching from the Southern US down to South America, these plants attach to tree trunks, branches, posts, fences or anything they can find.  Most do not live in the ground.  They live off of natural rainfall or humidity and are not harmful to the hosting plant/tree.  All will flower.  Flower color depends on the species.  These flowers appear in spring-summer.  We have multiple varieties.  Most growers divide plants into single plants and sell them one at a time.  We are offering bunches of many plants together.  Some bunches are a decade old.  You can put them on a piece of bark, wood or whatever you want.  We have both un-mounted and mounted on wood plants.  They are easy to care for outside.  Of note, they are not super expensive but are not cheap.  This is because they are so old.

Euterpe edulis is a fun palm to grow because it is super attractive, has a narrow trunk and a beautiful, smooth crown shaft.  I have had several in my garden.  On mine, the crown shafts were a purple-green color but it's more common to see them as a lime green.  Maximum height is about thirty feet with about a four inch thick trunk.  Leaves tend to arch down and leaf color is green.  This species likes to start in filtered light and work it's way into full sun along the coast.  It's cold hardy into the upper twenties F.  Anticipate a plant life of about thirty years.  Also of note is the fact that the hearts of this palm are edible and a delicacy in many areas.

RHOPALOSTYLIS BAUERI
NORFOLK ISLAND PALM
SINGLE TRUNK - CROWN SHAFTED
15 GALLON SIZE PLANTS IN 5 GALLON POTS!
BETTER FOR MAIL ORDER OR PLANTING
LIMITED NUMBERS AVAILABLE

Rhopalostylis baueri, the Norfolk Island Palm, is native to two locations.  Norfolk Island (an Australian island) is the home of the classic Rhopalostylis baueri but there is also a population in Kermadec Islands, a New Zealand territory.  The population of Rhopalostylis baueri on Norfolk Island is near the elevated center of the island, rare elsewhere.  In this locality, it is threatened by rodents that eat the seeds and young seedlings.  In the Kermadec location, this species is found on Raoul Island.  It is more plentiful there because there have been efforts to eliminate the rat population.

In my experience, this species does best in less than full sun along the coast.  Half day morning sun is about perfect.  It has a cold tolerance into the low 20's F. and is being grown in the SF Bay area.  Anticipate a height typically of about 25 feet mature.

We're excited because we just got in some great and super large 5g R. baueri as shown here.  These plants are the size of a standard 15g.  But, since they are in the smaller 5g pot, they are a lot easier/cheaper to ship.  And, less problems digging the hole to plant.  Remember that we have limited numbers available.  The first five photos show these 5 gallon plants.  I'm not putting them on special b/c they are huge for their pots and a great deal at our regular 5g price.

BROMELIADS IN THE LANDSCAPE
VERSATILE, EASY TO GROW COMPANION PLANTS
VAST ASSORTMENT TO SELECT FROM

Bromeliads are a type of plant, typically small in size, that are simple to grow and make great companion plants in the garden.  They are very versatile and, because most species grow epiphytically, can be used on poles, posts, fences, mounted to trees or simply grown in the ground among other plants.  Almost all species blossom once a year and the blossoms are long lived.  Blossoms appear in almost every color imaginable, anything from the rainbow.  Plants propagate by basal suckers and only really need care once a year when old plants are removed from the cluster.

Photographs here show plants that are attached to posts, mounted in trees and are used in water features.  There are some species that can get  up to five or six feet tall and are quite spectacular.  If one wishes, he can just put the bromeliad, with it's container, right into the ground. Some species tolerate full sun and many love filtered light and blossom well in such light.

Although we are not a "bromeliad only" nursery per se, we typically have a great supply of the most desirable types available for sale.  We emphasize beauty and color in our Bromeliads rather than rarity.  We consider one of our specialties our ability to offer a great selection of interesting and colorful companion plants.

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM
NEW RED EMERGING LEAF
DARK GREEN CROWN SHAFT
SUPER LARGE, BEAUTIFUL 15G AVAILABLE

What good fortune is it that New Caledonia can claim to be the home of all Chambeyronia.  Included is this species, C. macrocarpa.  It is a slow growing, pinnate, crown shafted palm that gets to a height of about 30 feet.  It has a dark green to green-black crown shaft.  Compare this to C. hookeri above with it's yellow crown shaft.  Leaves are wide, thick and leathery to the touch.  With good culture, maybe you can get three new leaves a year.

The problem is that it takes about six to seven years to produce a nice, robust 15g plant.  And, the one we're showing here is 8 to 10 years old, outdoor grown in half sun.  I wish we had twenty like this.  It's the size of a well grown 25 gallon.  The basal diameter is 7 to 8 inches and the overall height is 8 to 10 feet.  It's a beauty.  We'll try to get more like this over time.  But, this one's available right now.  As this was a single plant acquisition and three times larger than a normal 15g, it is not being priced as a regular 15g plant.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII
EASTERN CAPE BLUE CYCAD
FULL SUN, NEVER VERY BIG
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE SEEDLINGS

One of the most popular blue cycads that we sell is this South African species from the Eastern Cape region (toward the ocean).  It is a very slow growing species that, in fifty years, is rarely over a height of five feet tall.  So, like the Dioon above, it'll always stay small and not obstruct a view.  The color is intensely blue.  I tell people it's like the color of a clear blue sky after you've thrown in a tiny bit of fog.  The other thing about this species, compared to E. horridus and trispinosus, is that it's much less spiny and very uniform in shape when mature.  Expect a trunk of no more than three feet and a crown width of no more than six feet.  It loves full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

MULE PALM TREE
BUTIA CAPITATA X SYAGRUS (QUEEN PALM)
VERY COLD HARDY HYBRID PALM
BEAUTIFUL WHEN LARGER
TEN DAY SPECIAL SQUAT 20G SIZE

Recently we got in a nice selection of squat 20g Mule Palms.  For those who don't know, this amazing hybrid doesn't look like either parent.  To make the Mule Palm, the seed bearing parent has to be the Butia capitata.  The pollen donor is the Queen Palm.  The reverse doesn't produce a palm anything close to the Mule Palm.

They are remarkable because they are supper attractive.  Some say they have a resemblance to a Coconut.  They also usually just get to 25 feet - compared to the 60 foot height of the Queen.  And, they are very cold hardy - down to about 16 degrees.  I've got a customer in Tucson, AZ that can't grow Queen Palms b/c they freeze in the winter.  Our Mule Palms thrive there.  This hybrid tolerates desert sun.  And, they don't make any fruit to mess up your pool!  This is why they are called the "Mule" Palm.  What a combination of good qualities!

The plants in these pots are nicely sized and husky with overhead leaves.  They are too big for mail order but can be delivered.

THE MOOSEHORN FERN
PLATYCERUM SUPERBUM
GROWS EPIPHYTICALLY
MOUNT ON WOOD OR TREE TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL SIZE SHOWN

Platycerum are a type of fern that we know as the "Staghorn Fern".  But, the normal type you see, P. bifurcatum, has deer antler types of leaves.  They are narrow and reach out from the attaching shield.  There's another type known as the "Moosehorn Fern" where the leaves are entire, stretching across the width of the plant.  These leaves can get up to six feet across.  They are not easy to find.  The standard Staghorn is not difficult to locate.  Both are an epiphytic type of plant that can be mounted on a tree trunk or grown on a wooden base.  They are not hard to care for but you don't want to let them go dry.  I water them by just spraying with a hose and occasionally give them some liquid fertilizer mixed into the water.  They can take a bit of sun or strong filtered light.  Cold hardiness is typically into the mid to perhaps low twenties F.

VARIEGATED RHAPIS EXCELSA
EXOTIC - TEND TO BE SMALL
DON'T LIKE TOO MUCH NITROGEN
A TRUE PLANT ENTHUSIAST COLLECTOR ITEM
LIMITED SUPPLIES AVAILABLE

This post is to remind readers that we still offer a limited supply of the highly coveted variegated Rhapis excelsa.  Known as the "Gems of the Orient", these striking plants typically have yellow or white variegation on green leaves.  Most plants at mature size are three to six feet.  There are many exotic varieties - most popular in Japan where affluent collectors compete to obtain the most striking plants.  Propagation is by divisions only.  As these plants come only from separating a part of the mother plant, we tend to have only larger plants for sale.  Mature height of these dwarf plants averages four to six feet.  They do great inside if given good care.  They are known to be a favorite Asian plant on a business executive's desk.

There are all possibilities for the yellow/white on green variegation.  Sometimes you'll see the opposite with green on a yellow leaflet.  These are evident most commonly as longitudinal bands of the light colors on the green background.   On any given leaflets the widths of these lighter bands are variable - some narrow, some wider.  I am showing a few close ups of plants we've had over the years.  Contact us if you are interested in getting one.  BTW, these are never inexpensive plants.  And, they are all different.  The variegation seems to be different from leaf to leaf on all varieties.

These plants do well outdoors in our area and are grown in filtered light.  Cold hardiness is at least down to 20 degrees F.  And, be aware that, if you feed aggressively with nitrogen, the variegation (lighter colors) can turn green.  We have very limited availability of these gems.  There are no seed sources to grow these, so seedlings are never available.  And, it's more common we have 5g size and up - rarely do we offer one gallon plants.  Just contact us and we can send photos of plants we have.

YUCCA ROSTRATA
BLUE SUCCULENT WITH AMAZING COLD HARDINESS
SEMI-DWARF SIZE MATURE - COLD HARDY!!
BEING GROWN IN NEW YORK IN THE SNOW!
25 GALLON SIZE AVAILABLE

This small to medium sized, drought tolerant plant is native to the southern U.S. border and down into Mexico.  It is usually a single trunk mature plant but can fork above the ground.  Most notable is the silver-blue foliage as shown here.  It is very slow growing.  Over time it forms a trunk about eight or ten inches thick.  Foliage is about 2 feet long and not "pokey" or sharp.

It demands full sun and is cold hardy at least into the single digits F.  I had a customer call me from New York City recently to tell me that a plant bought from us about three years ago was thriving in his yard.  Gardeners like this species because it's not very big and gives nice color to a sunny garden.  Shown here is our 25 gallon size.  We have limited numbers of these and may be able to offer smaller 5 gallon soon.

DIOON RZEDOWSKII
MEDIUM SIZED GREEN CYCAD
NATIVE TO MEXICO
VERY RARE SPECIES

There are three Dioons which are fairly similar and could be confusing to a new cycad enthusiast.  These include:

Dioon spinulosum - Mexico
Dioon mejiae -
Honduras
Dioon rzedowskii -
Mexico

Of these three, Dioon mejiae has an absence (or near so) of spines at the margins of the leaflets.  And, on new throws, the leaves are very soft and furry.  Dioon rzedowskii has newly emergent tomentous leaves, but not nearly as prominent as mejiae, and more short lived.  Also, leaflets of rzedowskii are prominently spiny on less mature plants, sometimes with a yellow color to the spines.  Stems of Dioon rzedowskii get up to 16 feet, leaves are 5 feet long and leaflets size is gradually reduced at the base of the leaves.

In contrast to rzedowskii, Dioon spinulosum is a much taller cycad and plants in the wild can get to almost forty feet.  Leaves and leaflets are very similar to rzedowskii, especially on younger plants, but to my eyes the spination is different.  With age, the spines of Dioon rzedowskii disappear.  And, leaflets are gradually tapered both at the proximal and apical points.  Also some mention that the leaflets of rzedowskii are stiffer and have more prominent spines.  Trust that it takes seeing all three species side by side to really learn the differences of these three quite similar species.  Wild populations of both of these species is quite close although Dioon rzedowskii is at a much higher elevation, up to almost 2000 feet.

In terms of culture, I've found that Dioon rzedowskii tolerates full coastal sun better than spinulosum.  It has a darker green leaf color in filtered light, but can take full sun in some areas.  Inland areas require filtered light.  Cold tolerance is into the mid, perhaps low 20's.  But, it is not as cold hardy as many other Dioon species like Dioon edule. All three of the species above are fairly easy to grow in the garden.  Too intense of sun on any of these three either burns the leaves or makes them limey green.

Shown here are first below photos of a nice garden plant with close ups of the leaflets.  These are followed by a variety of nursery plants.  As these are super slow growing, you'll maybe have an overhead trunk in a lifetime.  We can mail order smaller sizes.

BURRETIOKENTIA VIEILLARDII
THE TIGER PALM - STRIPED CROWN SHAFT
ANOTHER SPECIES OF THIS GREAT GENUS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE!

This species of Burretiokentia comes from the highest elevation of the three species of this genus from New Caledonia.  It grows at altitudes of almost 4000 feet.  It has a thin trunk of about six inches and can get to sixty feet tall.  It has a prominently bulging crown shaft that is known for it's diagonally dark markings.  Thus, the name "Tiger Palm".  The crown shaft is reddish-brown in color and has prominent striations as shown below.  Younger trunks are green with rings unless exposed to sun.

The crown of this species is full and round with upright and arching leaves.  Leaf length is about eight feet, leaflet length is three feet and the leaves are flat in cross section.  Some would argue that this species is the prettiest of all Burretiokentia.  Culture is similar to the other Burretiokentia, but I'd give it more shade when young and let it "grow into the sun" rather than starting it in direct sunlight.  As with all New Caledonian species, ample water is crucial.  Under-watered plants do not do well.  Although limited, we do offer various sizes for sale.  I've shown not only nursery plants here but also some mature specimens.  We're putting the 15g on Special

BURRETIOKENTIA KOGHIENSIS
RARE NEW CALEDONIAN PALM
WHITE CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 15G PLANTS

Back in the year 2000, I was the President of the International Palm Society.  One of my goals at the time was to break the monotony of Biennial meetings always being held in the United States.  I found them to be repetitious and sort of boring.  Certainly, no one at the time would have called them exciting meetings.   With this in mind, I set up the 1998 Biennial in Thailand at Nong Nook Gardens.  That was a first.  And, to outdo that meeting, I arranged with the Palm Society of New Caledonia to have to 2000 Biennial in their country.  The palms of New Caledonia are some of the most exciting and pretties palms of the world.

This gave Jesse and I a great opportunity to see the New Caledonian palms in the wild.  About 45 minutes out of Noumea (the capitol) is Mount Koghi.  This is the home habitat for this species.  It has a thin to medium trunk, a white crown shaft and gets to about 25 feet tall.  It's very beautiful and does great in Southern California.  Most grow it in part day sun.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F. (sort of like a King Palm with tolerance of cold).  Shown here are plants that we germinated about 8 years ago.  They are finally really nice 15g plants.  You'll not see locally grown plants of this species and size around at all.  And, never on sale.

CHAMAEDOREA RADICALIS
DWARF SPECIES - RARELY OVER FIVE FEET
FILTERED LIGHT OR COASTAL SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD 7G PLANTS

This is an interesting species that has two forms: a trunk-less form and one with a small to medium sized trunk.  It is from Mexico.  All forms are single trunk.  The trunk-less form has leaves three feet or less and never gets tall.  This is the form I'm offering on special here.  When this form blossoms, the flowers shoot up from he base of the plant and are typically taller than the leaves.  If you have a female, very pretty red seeds form if pollinated.   On the coast, some have grown this variety in a far amount of sun.  Of course, it thrives in filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.  The unique thing about these 7g plants is their size. All are multiple about three feet tall.  They are ready for the garden and can be shipped.

REGULAR PRICE 7G $125
TEN DAY SPECIAL 7G $95

PRE-ARRIVAL SALE
BEEN SOLD OUT FOR A FEW MONTHS

TEN DAY SPECIAL 7G/15G PLANTS

Recently new to our nursery, this exotic filtered light dwarf plant puts out clusters of huge flowers.  This variety is pink but they also can come in red, apricot, orange, yellow and a whole assortment of other colors.  They typically get to a height of five feet or less and throw long lasting blossoms.  See how beautiful they are now - yet pictures from a month ago had no flowers.  Along the coast they can take full sun.  Cold hardiness is into the twenties F.  Plants are about as wide as they are tall and make a wonderful and colorful addition to the garden floor.  You'll not see this plant around too much.  We sold them like crazy last year as everyone wants color for shady areas.  In a week or a bit more, I'll be getting in about six or eight more.  I'm offering them now for people to reserve.  Then, they'll be gone again.  Easy to ship.  BTW, they blossom in the spring.  So, if you get one now, you'll have color soon.  One picture below shows the plant in winter, no blossoms.

CYCAS REVOLUTA X DEBAOENSIS
VERY NICE BAND SIZE SEEDLINGS
BIFURCATION ALREADY EVIDENT
TEN DAY SPECIAL

When cycad enthusiasts have pollen and a receptive female cycad cone, you know some type of pollination is going to take place.  This is the way we see all sorts of crazy crosses.  Many of these hybrids are done haphazardly with no thought about the cross.  But, with this said, there is some rationale to the hybrid I'm showing you now.  Cycas debaoensis, from China, is known for it's mutipinnate leaves.  They are very cool.  Leaf stems can split to the third order.  Contrast this with the common Sago Palm that has simple pinnate leaves.  But, the Sago is super cold hardy and female cones are very available.  A cross could give a larger plant with bifurcating leaves and more cold hardiness.  That would be desirable.

I don't know if this is the reason that a friend did this cross.  But, it intrigued me so I brought in some hand selected plants that are showing the bifurcation in the seedling stage.   Please see photos.  There are no mature specimens around that I know of so I can't show mature cycad photos.  I'd anticipate a medium sized plant that hopefully will take sun and be fairly cold hardy, hopefully into the teens F.

HYOPHORBE VERSCHAFELTII
THE SPINDLE PALM
BULGING TRUNK ABOVE THE GROUND!
MUCH BETTER FOR CO CAL THAN THE BOTTLE PALM!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

If you live in Southern California, the chances are 99% that a Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) will die in your garden.  They don't tolerate our winter's cold.  If you live along the coast, the chances are 75% that you can successfully grow the Spindle Palm.  Plain and simple.  You might ask why a certain depot type store only sells the Bottle Palm.  It's because the Spindle Palm can't be imported into CA from Florida because of lethal yellow disease.  So, one has to grow them from seeds here in California. And, that takes a long time.  But, that's exactly what we'd done.  So, we can offer you a Hyophorbe with a bulging trunk that you CAN grow and is on sale!

And, the Spindle Palm is easier to grow, gets taller and has a cigar shaped trunk that is super cool.  Mature height in 25 years is about 15 feet.  Peak height is about 20 feet in many decades.  The mature plants below are very old.  This species loves sun.  Cold hardiness is just below a freeze.  The five gallon size shown here are fantastic - very large for their pots with heights of 3 to 4 feet size.  They are ready for a 15g pot.

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX
SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
HAS RED OR ORANGE CONE
LEAFLETS LIKE HOLLY FERN
TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This fairly rare cycad species is native to the Natal region of South Africa and Mozambique.  It is most known for the appearance of the leaflets - they resemble the leaflets of a Holly Fern.  I would consider this a medium sized cycad as it really doesn't get much trunk height.  But, leaves can be six feet long so it's hard to consider it to be a dwarf plant.  Also notable are the prominently orange or red cones on mature plants.  The photos show this.  Leaf color is green with spines on the leaflets.  Caudex size is usually one, perhaps two feet mature.  It prefers filtered light or a bit of sun.  This is not to say more coastal areas cannot grow it in full sun.  Cold tolerance is 22 degrees F.   The plants on sale are not new seedlings. They are over three years old with caudexes of about an inch.  You might ask "why do they just have one leaf?"  The answer is that, when a large plant fills the band with roots, the amount of soil just can't support two leaves at once.

WODYETIA BIFURCATA
THE FOXTAIL PALM
NEW ARRIVAL - SQUAT 15G MULTIPLES
MORE THAN ONE PLANT PER POT!
TEN DAY SPECIAL

The Foxtail Palm, Wodyetia bifuracata, is native to Queensland, Australia and is a single trunk palm.  It gets to about twenty-five feet height, has fluffy plumose leaves, is crown shafted as shown below and is single trunk.  It loves heat and sun.  I've grown these plant for several decades as a single trunk palm - one plant per pot.  But, over the past few years have been getting more and more calls from people looking for several in one pot.  I just haven't grown them this way.  But, because so many people asked for them, I came across and purchased  a supply of "multiples".  These have four to five plants in each pot.  This seems a bit peculiar to me, but who knows?  I'm showing some photos below of several triples in domestic gardens.  We have limited numbers of these multiples.  They are seven to eight feet tall in their pots.

CYCAS THOUARSII
MEDIUM SIZED - SOFT GREEN LEAVES
FAST GROWING, EXOTIC APPEARING

TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

The first five photos here show a plant I'm putting on special.  This is a huge 7 gallon plant with a caudex that is 5 x 15 inches and probably an age of 12 to 15 years.  It came from the same collection I discussed in my last Blog posting Sunday.  It's a huge plant in a smaller pot and can be mail ordered.  Native to Madagascar, the eastern coast of Africa and the Comoro Islands, this fast growing species gets to a native height of sometimes twenty feet or more.  Plants grown domestically are typically ten feet or a bit more in California.  This species trunks are about eight to ten inches thick with leaves five to six feet long and soft to the touch.  There is small armor on the leaf stem, but the leaflets have no spines.  Leaf color is green to blue-green.

Along the coast this species tolerates full sun.  Far inland areas should utilize filtered light or morning sun.  Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F.  We have a whole assortment of sizes available including nice 5g plants that are a piece of cake to ship. (see below)

This very popular palm is favored because or its huge, shade producing leaves.  They can get to fourteen feet long with a twelve foot width.  They are green in color, sometimes a bit mottled in color.  The latter is a nice thing to the eye.  Leaflets are rounded and scalloped at the edges - more liked than other Fishtail palm leaflets that are often "chopped" appearing.  Mature height is up to about thirty to thirty-five feet.  Trunk diameter is thick, sometimes up to 30 inches at the base.  Because of the sizes of these palms, you have to give it plenty of room and full sun.  If it's hot, give it extra water.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F.  It is native to mountainous areas in northern Thailand.

CHAMAEDOREA WOODSONIANA
TALL, THICK TRUNK, BEAUTIFUL
15 GALLON SIZE AVAILABLE

This is a very large, single trunk species that is native to a long range, spanning from Mexico into the northern parts of South America.  it is known as one of the tallest of all Chamaedoreas, reaching heights of possibly over forty feet.  The trunk has a prominent crownshaft and is four inches thick or more.  It's leaves are four to five feet long with a prominent petiole.  Leaf color is a deep green and, in cross section, the leaves are slightly keeled.  In Southern California, this species prefers sun and adequate hydration.  It has been said that this species cannot take a freeze.  More recent reports suggest this species can tolerate temperatures into the upper 20's F.  It is known to be growing in the San Francisco Bay area.  It is a quick grower and sometimes the base of the trunk is swollen.  Shown is our 15g size.  We have limited numbers available.

CLINOSTIGMA SAVORYANUM
THE PACIFIC BEAUTY PALM
NEWLY POTTED ONE GALLON PLANTS AVAILABLE
SECOND GENERATION FROM LOCAL TREE!

TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE PLANTS

This is a gorgeous and exotic crown shafted palm that many in our area can grow.  We have been out of them for over a year and just received seedlings from a locally and domestically grown specimen that flowered and set viable seeds.  Everyone loves this palm.  It is single trunk, crown-shafted species comes from Bonin Island near Japan.  It has been proven possible to grow this species in warmer areas of Southern California.  It is very exotic appearing with a prominent green crown shaft.  Interestingly, there are several species of Clinostigma that can be grown here.  But the savoryana is the best and easiest for us.  It can potentially get to a height of 30 feet or more and prefers a sunny location.  Cold tolerance is down to bout a freeze.

Clinostigma is a very exotic pinnate palm and would be one of the more exotic and unusual of palm types possible in this area.  Shown here are one gallon pots that were recently potted up.  Yes, they are small but (to grower's delight) the seeds came from a seeding tree in the Orange County area.  Also shown are a variety of sizes of domestic plants in Southern California.

RAVANALA MADAGASCARENSIS
THE TRAVELER PALM
NEW ARRIVAL SQUAT 15G
IF YOU DON'T FREEZE, LUSH TROPICAL PLANT IN ONE PLANE
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

This is a tropical tree from Madagascar that gets over thirty feet tall.  But, it can be grown in Southern California if you don't freeze.  It gets a trunk about ten inches to a foot wide, brown in color.  The leaves are flat and green, reminiscent of a banana leaf.  This species does sucker.  In my opinion, specimens look best if suckers are removed.  This provides better viewing of the flat plane of leaves that go from side to side.  This characteristic is called "distichous", all in one plane.

Hard wind can tear the leaves.  So, a protected location is probably best.  Cold tolerance is down to a freeze.  Temperatures of thirty degrees or below will "melt" this plant overnight.  It is a good and fast growing species and tolerates full or part sun.  Folklore says to plants the leaves going east to west, i.e. with maximal southern exposure.

We have available a new batch of nice squat 15g plants.  Some are nine feet tall in their pot as shown below.  If you wanted one of these, act quickly because I rarely have them available.

CHAMAEDOREA HOOPERIANA
BAMBOO PALM THAT IS TALL AND FULL

GORGEOUS 15G PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

It's not that uncommon that I'll talk about various types of Bamboo Palms.  Three decades ago this species (Chamaedorea hooperiana) would have probably been called a variety of Chamaedorea costaricana.  But, in his book on Chamaedorea, Don Hodel described this species named after friend and palm enthusiast Louis Hooper.  So, it now enjoys its own status as a species.  And, it deserved species status because it is quite different than Chamaedorea costaricana.  This species is native to high elevation rain forest in the Veracruz area of Mexico.  It grows at up to 5000 feet elevation in habitat.

It reaches an overall height of twelve to fourteen feet.  It is also quite wide at maturity with many canes.  These canes will sometimes lean outwards, making the clump wider.  Trunks are about one inch thick.  Compared to
Chamaedorea costaricana, this species is more full and wide.  It's hard to "see through" this species whereas you'd have a better chance of seeing through a costaricana.  Also, the leaves of costaricana are shorter.  Hooperiana leaves are four feet long or more.

Shown here is a 15 gallon sized plant that is about ten feet tall.  This species likes good draining soil, adequate water, filtered light and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  We have various smaller sizes as well - and maybe a few 25 gallons.

REGULAR PRICE 15G $225
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G $185

BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
STUNNING BLUE MALAGASY FAN PALM
POPULAR, STATELY AND BEAUTIFUL!
NEW ARRIVAL OF GREAT 20 GALLON PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE 20G PLANTS

For several decades we've been growing this stunning blue fan palm from Madagascar.  We've concentrated mostly on the blue form although there is also a green form of Bismarckia which we also have for sale.    However, most enthusiasts prefer the blue form.  Mature specimens in their native habitat reach heights of over forty feet.  It' not certain how tall they'll get in domestic gardens here, but I anticipate about the same.  Trunk diameter can reach 18 inches or a bit more.  Leaf width can be up to eight feet.  This is a very attractive palm and should be given room in the garden to show it off.  It prefers full, hot sun.  Many people in desert locations have found they can grow it.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees, although plants seeing colder have come back from injury.

This plant is a good growing species.  It is sensitive to root damage, so bare rooting shipped plants is not advised.  Most will die.  This also applies to buying Bismarckia by mail order.  Bare root plants usually die.  Fortunately, we ship plants in their pots with soil.  Bismarckia prefers sandy, good draining soil.  The more intense your sun, the more blue it gets.  It is not a good plant for shade.  For more information on this species, check out this link:

At the onset, I might comment that I really don't like Giant Bird of Paradise.  I say this because they are high maintenance plants and can be invasive.  But, people keep asking for them.  So, I brought in a small number of over-sized 5 gallon plants that are quite large and on special.   This species gets to a height of about 20 feet and freely suckering.  The plants on sale here are huge for their pots.  They could be mail ordered.

DASYLIRION LONGISSIMUM
THE MEXICAN GRASS PLANT
MATURE SPECIMEN AVAILABLE

This interesting drought tolerant plant is native to Mexico and extremely drought tolerant.  I was contacted by an enthusiast who would like to sell a very old plant from his garden.  It has three trunks as shown and is about the largest one I've personally seen in a private garden.  References say that super old plants in habitat can actually get a trunk that is six or eight feet tall in fifty or a hundred years.  It loves hot sun.  The crown of needle like leaves is about six to eight feet across.  Each leaf is about the size of a knitting needle and four to six feet long.  They come to a point but are not very dangerous except perhaps to one's eye.  The plant looks like a "Pom Pom on a Trunk".  Leaf color is green to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the teens F.  They like hot sun.  We do, of course, have smaller nursery plants available.  Contact me if you are interested and I can get pricing on this amazing specimen.

CYCAS RUMPHII
THE QUEEN SAGO
GREEN, ATTRACTIVE CYCAD
MINIMAL ARMOR
ASSORTMENT OF SIZES AVAILABLE

One would think availability of this green Cycas species would be more plentiful.  But, it's not and they are hard to find.  Cycas rumphi is native to far eastern countries including Papa New Guinea, Indonesia and Christmas Island.  It is a good sized species with overall height to 25 or 30 feet, a trunk diameter of 12 to 16 inches and leaves that green and 5 to 8 feet long.  Leaflets are soft and there is minimal armor only on the leaf stems.  Along the coast they do fine with full or part sun.  If you are far inland, give it strong filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the mid twenties F. or a bit colder.

Shown here is an assortment of nursery plants.  The first one is 7g followed by a citrus pot.  I then show an older plant with 20 inches of trunk.  And, finally a huge boxed specimen with over six feet of trunk.  The last row are medium sized garden plants.  Most of these plants are shippable.

COCCOTHRINAX CRINITA VARIETY BREVICRINAS
A RARE FORM OF THE OLD MAN PALM
NATIVE TO CUBA
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

The palm species shown here is the more rare form of Coccothrinax crinita.  Both the regular C. crinita and this form are native to Cuba.  This form is said to have shorter hairs on the trunk and to be a little bit more "neat" appearing.  For anyone who has grown one of the Old Man Palms, the one thing you'll agree on is how slow they are.  The seedlings here are three to four years old.  One suffers through "blades of grass" for the first two years or more.  Finally palmate leaves appear as shown here.  This is a dwarf species, unlikely to get over ten feet.  It loves sun and heat and is cold hardy somewhere into the mid-teens F. And, by the way, those fibers/hairs covering the trunk are its hallmark.  The pictures of the mature plants below are of the regular crinita - no reliable photos are available for this variety as it is so rare.

PACHYPODIUM LAMERI
THE "MADAGASCAR PALM"
SPINY TRUNK - WHITE BLOSSOMS
NEVER GETS TOO TALL

Although not a true palm at all, this succulent from Madagascar has very spiny trunks with un-armed green leaves at the top.  It's trunks can get up to about six inches thick and overall height is usually under ten feet. Sometimes plants will branch, even at the top, and give peculiar shapes overall.  Blossoms do appear and are white in color.  This is a popular garden plant as well as an interior species. Along our coast it demands bright sun.  Cold hardiness appears to be only to about a freeze.  The first plant has just come out of winter so the leaves are smaller.  Later in the summer they'll get larger like the last several photos.  We have only 5 gallon size available.  The trunks are super spiny.  They are easy to ship.  One photo below shows the white blossoms that mature plants produce in summer.

ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO
MEDIUM SIZED CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD
UPRIGHT LEAVES, LONG LEAFLETS
8 INCH CAUDEX IN A SMALL POT/ EASY TO SHIP
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This attractive green and rare cycad species is from Central Africa at the border of Kenya and northern Tanzania.  It is known for the upright nature of the long leaves.  Its leaflets are long and medium sized width.  Trunks in many decades can get over ten feet tall and cones are bright yellow.  This plant on special for many years has only been in this 2 gallon (8 inch) pot and the caudex is actually wider than the pot.  This is good for mail order people because shipping should be fairly affordable. But, it'd take a very tall box.  Caudex is 8 inches and it's holding a full crop of leaves.  Whomever gets this plant, realize that, by spring, you should plant it in the ground or put it into a 15 gallon container.

Just mention this Blog Special if you wish to buy this plant.  I can ship anywhere within the U.S., weather permitting.  If weather is a concern, it can be held for free awaiting better weather.  The last row of photos shows two very old nursery plants and one domestic garden specimen.

ANOTHER CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD
VERY LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES, NARROW LEAFLETS
9 INCH CAUDEX IN A 5 GALLON POT - CAN BE SHIPPED
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

Like E. kisambo above, this Central African cycad has upright leaves that are green.  But, the leaves are even longer - sometimes up to twelve feet long.   As new leaves, they go straight up.  If not cut and with additional throws of leaves, older leaves will relax and make room for new ones.  It is native to southwestern Uganda.  Trunks can get over ten feet tall and leaflets are narrow and spiny when younger.  It is a fast growing species and does great in sun or part sun along the coast.  Far inland I'd recommend a few hours of sun.  This plant has a nine inch caudex and is in a 5 gallon pot. I'm putting it on a Ten Day special.  It can be shipped but would need a very tall box.

CHAMAEROPS CERIFERA
THE BLUE CHAMAEROPS
SEMI-DWARF MATURE SIZE

TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This suckering fan palm in native to Morocco in northern Africa and is often as wide as it is tall.  It doesn't get typically as tall as Chamaerops humilus and has a strong blue color when in sun.  Typical mature height of seeds from habitat is usually six to eight feet.  It is also known that there are blue colored regular C. humilus that can get much taller.  It does sucker freely.  It loves full hot sun and tolerates cold temperatures to about 15 degrees F.  So, it's a great palm for folks in super cold areas.  It also grows well in the desert.  Shown here are the band size that we have put on special.  These are a simple mail order item.  Be aware these are huge band plants, well rooted.  They are not wimpy seedlings.  Note they are already going palmate.

This species of palm is typically single trunk but there are suckering forms.  It is native to island of Nossi-Be off the coast of Madagascar.  It can reach heights of over thirty feet.  It has leaves arranged in three ranks - "tristichous".   Trunk diameter is about 8 inches and the crown shaft is a rusty-brown color and not elongated.  It is a difficult species to find nowadays.  I'd recommend growing it in full sun along the coast.  I'd estimate cold hardiness to be in the mid-twenties F.  We have large 5 gallon plants on special.

There are two forms of Chamaedorea radicalis:  The smaller dwarf form and the trunking form.  Both are native to Mexico.  The trunking form is what I'm putting on special presently.  It has a thin trunk with rings, gets way overhead and tolerates coastal sun.  The fifth photo below shows what these bands will look like in a 5g pot in about two years.   These are fast growing and have a cold hardiness perhaps into the upper teens F.  They look best with several growing size by side.  The bands on sale have two or three plants per pot.  This is a good buy.

DIOON MEROLAE
A SMALLER MEXICAN CYCAD
LEAF COLOR GREEN TO GRAY
SHOWING THREE AVAILABLE NURSERY SIZES
FULL SUN IN MANY AREAS

This is one of my favorite cycads.  It is native to Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico.  Although plants in the wild may have trunks of eight to ten feet, this will take many centuries.  A typical very old plant in a domestic garden has two to three feet of trunk.  With its small to medium sized crown of leaves, this species will therefore never obstruct a view or get too large.  Leaf color is typically a gray-green.  But, in less sun it may become more green.  I've seen plants that are in full sun and almost have a very gray color to the leaves (see photo below).  It is cold tolerant to the low 20's F.  Along the coast it'll take full sun.  Far inland areas should consider morning sun or strong filtered light.

I am showing the following with the photos:
First two rows:  Two different 5g plants
Rows three and four:  Detail look at a nice 15g
Rows five and six:  Six different boxed old specimens
Bottom row:  Two garden specimens

We have a great selection of many sizes.  All can be shipped.

DIOON SPINULOSUM
A CUSTOMER FAVORITE CYCAD
GREEN LEAVES, ELEGANT
LOTS OF SIZES TO CHOOSE FROM

Although you can't tell from the photos here, this cycad species can get quite tall.  I've seen photos from habitat with what appears to be over 20 feet of trunk.  Dioon spinulosum is native to tropical areas in Mexico where it grows in limestone forests.  Trunks don't get overly thick, typically 12 to 14 inches thick.  With age, this can be more.  Leaves are green and mildly armed.  Leaf length is about six feet.  My preference is to grow this species in filtered light.  Cold tolerance is into the mid twenties F.  Be aware, to get a foot or two of trunk can take a few decades.  At the nursery we usually have a good selection of this species from small to large.  Photos below shown some nursery plants as well as plants in gardens.

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM
NEW RED EMERGING LEAF
DARK GREEN CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1.5 GALLON SIZE

What good fortune is it that New Caledonia can claim to be the home of all Chambeyronia.  Included is this species, C. macrocarpa.  It is a slow growing, pinnate, crown shafted palm that gets to a height of about 30 feet.  It has a dark green to green-black crown shaft.  Compare this to C. hookeri above with it's yellow crown shaft.  Leaves are wide, thick and leathery to the touch.  With good culture, maybe you can get three new leaves a year.  About one in twenty plants fail to throw a new red leaf - rather, it remains green.  This is just bad luck and there's no way to predict which will do this.  Shown here are 1 gallon plants we're putting on sale.  We do have larger and smaller sizes available.  Coastal sun is tolerated although strong filtered light is ok for most areas.  This is a great garden palm.

CHAMAEDOREA HYBRID
SUCKERING PLANTS
UNKNOWN PARENTAGE
VERY LARGE ONE GALLONS
ON SALE FOR TEN DAYS!

I just got in about a half dozen suckering Chamaedorea hybrid.  They came from a private grower and he didn't know the identity of the parents - but said "it is a hybrid".  To me they appear to have Chamaedorea costaricana blood in them.  They have green leaves and stems that should end up about an inch thick with prominent rings.  Leaf length is about three to four feet.  Plants are suckering already and head height in their pots.  These will want filtered light and should be cold hardy to at least 25 degrees or lower.  I obviously can't show a photo of a mature specimen.

Remember:  Mention this Blog special for this price.  And, repot or plant them in the3 garden soon.  They need it and are about as big as they could get in a one gallon pot.

SUPER RARE MADAGASCAR PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Discovered by John Dransfield and named after a U.K. executive of Macdonald's Hamburgers (who funded the expedition to Madagascar), this single trunk palm is new to the market, super rare and quite attractive.   It has orange-brown leaf bases at the point of trunk attachment, plumose leaves and gets to a height of about 25 to 30 feet.  It is single trunked with a medium thickness and prominent rings.  It takes full sun in coastal areas and, once established, is a good growing palm.  Shown here are our band sized seedlings.  On occasion we have larger sizes for sale.  These are easy to ship.  Growers tell us that this species takes temperatures into the mid-20's F.  I know of several enthusiasts who live in cool areas and now have fruiting specimens of this species.  It is an excellent grower.

This Madagascar palm is known as the "Triangle Palm" because the crown shaft has three flat sides.  It gets to a mature height of about 22 feet in 3 decades.  It loves heat and sun.  Leaves are a gray-green color and there is prominent speckling in the inner crown with dark colors.  It is slow growing.  It has a cold tolerance of about 24 degrees F.  The 5g plants on special are greenhouse grown and very tall.  They are actually way over one's head - so shipping would be expensive.  But, the price is good.  I am also showing mature trees in gardens.  We do have smaller and some larger nursery plants for sale.

PSEUDOPHOENIX SARGENTII
THE CHERRY PALM
INTERESTING TRUNK - MATURE 15 FEET
EXOTIC AND RARE - BUT SLOW GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This sought after and very rare pinnate palm is native the Keys in Southern Florida.  It has a tidy silver trunk with very prominent rings as shown below.  Leaves are slightly plumose and not too long.  The prominent thing about this palm is that it has a very slow rate of growth here in California.  It may be quicker in south Florida, but not here.  The 1 gallons on special here are four years old!  Expect a mature height of no more than fifteen feet.  And, in this area, this height will take forty years to achieve.  It is a full sun palm in most areas.  Cold hardiness is into the mid to upper twenties F.

NANNORRHOPS ARABICA
THE WHITE NANNORRHOPS
SUCKERING FAN PALM - NEVER TOO BIG
PROBABLY THE LAST TIME TO BE OFFERED BY US
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON

Native to Afghanistan, this near white palm species never gets overly large, perhaps up to eight feet.  It does sucker so a plant can be as wide as it is tall.  The striking thing about this palm is the color.  Note that there are also gray and green forms of this species.  This is the blue, almost white one.  It loves sun and heat.  Cold tolerance is estimated to be into the teens F.  We have put our 1 gallon size on special.  We have very few remaining.  And, because of no seed sources recently, this may be the last time we every offer them.  Note that, when this species is small, it is a bit trick to get it established in the ground.  I'd think it best to grow it on to a bigger plant before putting it in the garden.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX "TERACARPA"
THE BEST KING PALM EVER!
SO, WHAT IS IT?
ARE THEY EVER ON SALE?
YES, 10 DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Archontophoenix teracarpa is a fictitious name given to an unknown species/type of King Palm that I have in my garden and no one can identify.  I've been collecting seeds from it for quite a few years and offering it for sale.  Everyone who gets one agrees - "It's the best King Palm ever!"  It got the name from the Latin "Large body", which it has.  After trying to identify the species over many years and with no success, we coined the name "Archontophoenix teracarpa".  The closest species to it would be A. maxima but it's not the same.  So, what are the differences that makes teracarpa more ideal?

It is faster growing
It gets taller than the regular King Palm
It tolerates full sun better
It doesn't brown tip in full sun
It has a blue crown shaft
It has a super thick trunk

CHAMAEDOREA CATARACTARUM
THE CAT PALM
A SEMI-DWARF CLUSTERING PALM
DOES BEST IN LESS THAN FULL SUN
GETS TO SIX FEET TALL

This species of palm has been sold under the name "Cat Palm", which is an abbreviation for "cataractarum".   For Chamaedoreas and in the past, it was fairly easy to find.  Nowadays it's very difficult to find, especially with mature size as shown here.  It is a clustering palm that gets six feet tall.  It really doesn't form any trunk.  It likes water as it has a native habitat near river beds.  It is cold hardy into the mid 20's F. and I'd recommend, at most, a few hours of sun or filtered light.  It is native to the southern areas of Mexico and possibly into areas of Central America.  With less than adequate water it tends to look scrappy.  At the nursery, we offer mostly large plants, either 10 or 15 gallon size.  They typically are suckering with a near mature height.

CROTONS - NEW PLANTS JUST ABOUT TO COME IN
THIN LEAF VARIETY
MORE COLD HARDY
LOTS OF RED, BLACK AND GREEN COLORS
3 GALLON SIZE

Country or area of origin: Asia, India and Western Pacific
Mature height: Depends on species but anywhere from four feet to ten feet or taller
Sun Requirements:  In tropical areas, full sun.  Here in So Cal, perhaps some sun but filtered light in warm winter inland areas.
Cold Tolerance:  No species really tolerate a freeze.  Winter protection needed.  The variety shown here is more cold hardy than most.
Water Requirements:  Average
Rate of Growth:  Slow
Sizes Available: Variable, depending on season.
Regular Prices:  3 gallon as shown $45
Size shown:  3 gallon - sometimes we have larger.
Comments:
The main issue with Crotons is cold. They just don't take it too well.  The thin leaf varieties are more cold hardy.  There are probably a hundred different species or types of Croton.  Some are smaller, some make "trees".  You just have to find a species that grows well in your area.  The plants just in are one of the better varieties for cold and should be possible by many along the coast.

GASTROCOCOS CRISPA
AKA ACROCOMIA CRISPA
THE CUBAN BELLY PALM
SPINY PINNATE PALM
CENTRAL TRUNK SWOLLEN

Native to various areas of Cuba, this single trunk spiny palm is most known for the prominent bulge in the central trunk as shown here.  The spines on the trunk are variable.  Some older plants seem to lose their spines whereas others keep them.  See the photos below.  I've shown some photos that definitely show the bulge in the trunk.

Heights can get to over thirty feet, crowns are full, leaves are plumose and overall appearance of the trees are very interesting.  This is a full sun species that can be grown in frost free areas of Southern California.  We probably have some smaller sizes available presently.  BTW, I am old fashioned and really like the old name of Gastrococos crispa.  But, taxonomists have to make a living.  You can pretty much be guaranteed they'll change 25% of the names you know and love over the next twenty-five years.  They always have their reasons for this.

We do offer this species for sale but usually only in smaller sizes.

This species is a suckering palm from Madagascar but can also be found as a single trunk specimens in the wild.  It has either flat or droopy leaves/leaflets and white to silver crown shafts.  Overall height is about twenty feet and trunk thickness is four to six inches.  It likes coastal part day sun, perhaps more, and is cold tolerant to the mid-twenties F.  The plants shown here appear to be the droopy leaflet form, although I can't be positive.

ENCEPHALARTOS HORRIDUS
SUPER BLUE SO AFRICAN CYCAD
NICE SELECTION OF 15 GALLON PLANTS AVAILABLE
LOVES SUN ALONG THE COAST
ONE OF MOST POPULAR CYCADS AROUND!

By far, the most popular rare cycad we sell is Encephalartos horridus.  I don't know if it's the gnarly, spiny leaflets that thrills people.  Or, the smaller size.  Or, the intense blue color.  But, somehow people love this plant and we can hardly keep them in stock.  It is slow growing, has prominent barbs on the edge of the leaflets and has a small crown width - usually five feet or less.  A two foot trunk would be about it's maximum caudex height.  It can sucker.  Along the coast it likes full sun - in the desert, a few hours.  Cold hardiness is about 22 degrees F.

Shown here in the first two rows of photos are our 15 gallon size.  I'm also showing a larger plant and some seedlings (which we occasionally offer).  Of note, because of this species popularity, we often run out on certain sizes.  You might want to check out an almost identical species, Encephalartos trispinosus.  We have a good supply of them.

Rarely do I have this hard to find palm and even more rarely do I put it on special.  It's one of the hardest of the Braheas to locate.  It can reach heights of over 80 feet and is native to Baja California, Mexico.  Trunks are thin.  Crowns of leaves are open.  Leaf color is typically green as shown here.  One of the best places to see this species is in Balboa Park, San Diego, less than a half mile from where I live.  It wants full sun, tolerates wind and dry conditions and is a good growing species.  Despite it's beauty, its a solid grower and a fine addition to any garden.

CHAMAEDOREA ERNESTI-AUGUSTI
VERY ATTRACTIVE DWARF SHADE PALM
TYPICALLY NOT OVER 3 FEET TALL
EXCELLENT APPEARING 1 GALLON SIZE AVAILABLE

Over our 40 year existence, I'd estimate that the nursery has sold several thousand of this very popular dwarf palm.  Typically we recommend putting in a small colony of them.  They look great like this and will get staggered heights.  Most garden plants are not over 3 to 4 feet tall.  The first two rows of photos show our one gallon size on sale.  The last row shows older photos of either five gallon size or one of a 30 year clumps that are mature and flowering.  We've found this species to look best when planted as a small colony of three to five plants.  A name sometimes used for this species is the "Whale Tail Palm".  This species likes shade and has simple, non-divided leaves as shown.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.  Of the 1 gallon stock we have, some are singles, other multiples.  These are easy to ship and four in one box is no problem.  Just remember to mention this Special for the reduced price when you purchase.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

Just available is a new batch of very nice 15 gallon Ravenea glauca.  On smaller Ravenea, R. hildebrandtii is the smallest - a true dwarf.  This species Ravenea glauca is not that small, but it isn't super big at maturity.  It should max out at about 25 feet.  The trunk is narrow.  Leaves are green and soft to the touch.  In most areas it likes full sun.  In the desert, filtered light would be better.  Growth rate is medium.  Cold hardiness seems to be down to the mid to low 20's F.  These 15 gallon plants are very nice.

BLUE ENCEPHALARTOS LONGIFOLIUS
GORGEOUS SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
CURVED LEAVES, BLUE COLOR
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON SIZE

Among staff members at our nursery, this is one of the favorites of all the cycads we grow.  Encephalartos longifolius is native to South Africa.  There are habitat populations with both green and blue leaves.  Both varieties are very desirable.  A nice thing about this species is that it gives a larger and faster growing blue cycad when compared to blue species like Encephalartos lehmannii and horridus.  Leafs have a nice curve downwards as shown in some photos here.  It would not be unusual to get a plant with several feet of trunk in two to three decades.  Width of the crown is larger than lehmannii, usually six to seven feet.  E. lehmannii is more petite in comparison.

The one gallons on sale here are shown in the first five photos.  They are about four years old.  They can be easily shipped.  This species prefers full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

KENTIOPSIS OLIVIFORMIS
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM MATURE SIZE
A GREAT CROWN SHAFTED PALM FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

I've discussed this great New Caledonian species before because it is such a good species for those of us in Southern California.  It comes from high elevation in its native habitat, is a good growing palm and can tolerate full sun easily along the coastal strip.  Its cold hardiness is down to about 23 degrees, better than the King Palm or Kentia Palm.  It has an average trunk diameter of eight to ten inches and a mature height of usually about thirty feet.  It can also be grown in part day sun or strong filtered light.

Shown here is the size we're putting on special: our Band Size plants.  These plants are about two years old and almost ready to be stepped up.  Growth rate is good.  We have a reasonable assortment of all sizes although our larger plants are almost sold out.  This species is highly recommended in So Cal.

THE MINIATURE TREE FERN
YES, IT IS A MINIATURE AND STAYS SMALL!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

I am really fond of this cute and dwarf type of Tree Fern native to an assortment of Pacific Islands stretching from Hawaii to the Asian Pacific.  The reason I like it is because it stays small over time.  To make this point, I am going to first shown you a 15g plant that we got from a private collection.  You'll see this plant in the first two rows of photos.  The third row shows a standard 5 gallon nursery plant.  You'll note that, in twenty years, three inches of trunk turns into two feet of trunk.  Now, that's either from super slow growth or genetics.  I think it's the latter.  The tallest specimen I've seen in a garden is about five feet tall overall.  Trunk diameter is four inches or less.  It likes filtered light and can take cold weather into the mid-twenties F or maybe a bit less.  We also have 1 gallon size for sale.  These are easy to mail order.

ANTHURIUM PLOWMANII
RARE TROPICAL UNDERSTORY COMPANION PLANT
LIMITED NUMBER AVAILABLE
AND, SOME VARIEGATED PLANTS!

We recently got in some very attractive, rare and unusual filtered light companion plant - Anthurium plowmanii.  The last time we had these was two years ago.  Like other Birdsnest Anthuriums, the are a rosette type of plant with thick long leaves.  But, this species has very ruffled or wavy leaves.  They make cylindrical flower cones that give small red seeds.  Leaf length is three to four feet.  Native habitat stretches from Brazil north in South America.  Culture requires filtered light.   Cold hardiness is uncertain but definitely these plants take a freeze.

And, included in this group were several variegated plants. The second set of photos show the variegated plants.  They can be mail ordered.

ARENGA MICRANTHA
LARGE SUCKERING PINNATE PALM FROM INDIA THAT TOLERATES COLD
WE HAVE A FEW 15 GALLON PLANTS
SUPER DIFFICULT TO FIND

This morning I'm showing you a hard to find suckering palm from northern India, Tibet and surrounding areas.  Quite remarkably, it's native habitat is at elevations of 5000 to 7500 feet.  As you'd suspect, it tolerates temperatures way below freezing, probably into the upper teens F.  I don't really know for sure as of yet.  But, it's felt to be the most cold hardy of the genus Arenga

It's not a small Arenga.  It can get up to 20 feet with trunks about 8 inches (mature) in diameter.  Like other species of the genus, the trunks are hairy and a bit shaggy.  Leaves are large and silver colored on their underside.  It is a part day sun or filtered light species.

Shown here is a 15 gallon nursery plant.  A habitat photo by T. Spanner are also shown.  For those of you in colder areas, this is a great palm.  We only have a few for sale.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX PURPUREA
THE PURPLE CROWN SHAFT KING PALM

VERY BEAUTIFUL BUT NOT THE MOST COLD HARDY KING
TEN DAY SPECIAL LARGE 1 GALLON PLANTS

The native home of Archontophoenix purpurea is the Mt. Lewis mountain range in Queensland, Australia.  This species is known for the purple color to the crown shaft.  It is found at an elevation up to 4000 feet.  Mature height is quoted to be over fifty feet, but in habitat and culture I didn't see one this tall.  It is cold hardy down to about 25 degrees F.

The degree of purple color you see in the crown shaft is quite variable.  If you see a picture of one with an intense purple color like on grape candy, it is probably "photo-shopped".  Expect a light purple or reddish hue, which is much more common.  Also, you won't see the purple color when they are juvenile.  They have to have some trunk height before it can be seen.  So, when you buy one you just have to wait for the color.

A good way to recognize this species as a juvenile nursery plant is from the yellowish color to the stem and petiole.  Also, the underside of the leaves are intensely silver as shown here.  The crown shaft is green on young plants.  There are only two species of King Palms which have ramenta (small hair-like fibers) on the underside of the leaflets.  These are the A. cunninghamiana and A. purpurea.  So, check the underside of the leaves.  If you see ramenta and they are silver, you are looking at an A. purpurea.

The plants on special here are good sized 1 gallon plants.

BURRETIOKENTIA KOGHIENSIS

WHITE CROWN SHAFT

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1.5 GALLON PLANTS

Back in the year 2000, I visited the habitat for this species with my son.  So, Jesse and I had the great opportunity to see this New Caledonian palm in the wild. I do offer other sizes, but these are great starter plants.  Of note, I don't have too many available.

PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI
SOUTH AMERICAN COCONUT

LARGE, COCONUT APPEARING PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This rare and nearly extinct species from Bolivia in South America is a single trunk pinnate palm that gets to about forty feet height with a twelve to eighteen inches in trunk diameter.  In its natural habitat high in the Andes Mountains, it sees a fair amount of cold weather.  In domestic gardens, reports of this species tolerating temperatures into the teens have surfaced.  Seeds are huge in size, expensive and germination is sporadic.  In most areas, this species tolerates full sun.  In the desert, part sun is probably better.  Give it plenty of room to grow - it is a large tree.  Many think it resembles the Coconut Palm, thus the common name.  The 5g on special are very nicely sized.  The larger nursery plant is a 15g (sixth photo below) and is presently not on sale.

FURCRAEA MACDOUGALII
UNUSUAL BLUE SUCCULENT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

It is actually difficult to find this sun loving blue succulent for sale.  It is native to Mexico and felt to be the tallest Agave type of plant.  It gets to a height of typically under ten feet, has a fairly narrow trunk and fleshy, thick and peculiar shaped blue leaves.  Shown here are our band sized plants on special.  And, I'm showing a mature garden specimen taken by an unknown author.  This species likes hot sun and is cold hardy at least to the low 20's F.  BTW, these are second generation plants from 'bulbils" from a customer's mature and fruiting plant.  They are easy to grow but growth rate is rather slow.  The bands on special are huge compared to market plants in the band size.  They are five years old.  Larger plants tend to be quite expensive if you can find them.  We do have 5g and 15g sizes.

REGULAR PRICE BAND SIZE $45
TEN DAY SPECIAL $35

Please mention this Blog only special to get this price.  These are simple to ship right to your door.

JUBAEA X BUTIA CAPITATA F1 HYBRID
QUICKER GROWING, FAT TRUNK
EXTREMELY COLD HARDY - FULL SUN
RETAINED LEAF BASES ON TRUNK

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 15G PLANTS

For some reason, palm enthusiasts around the world love palm hybrids, especially inter-generic hybrids.  I don't quite know the fascination with this, but it is real.  This is particularly true if the two parents are an unlikely match.  Hybridization has given us such popular trees as the Mule Palm, Foxy Lady, and others.  Sometimes these crosses offer a cultural advantage: faster growth, more cold hardiness or even a nicer appearance.  Many feel that the cross between the Queen Palm and
Syagrus schizohylla is prettier by far than either parent.

Jubaea x Butia is another interesting hybrid that is super popular.  Often these are discovered by spontaneous hybridization (open hybridization) and only appreciated later.  The plants offered here are F1 hybrids (first cross).  Butia pollen fertilized the
Jubaea blossom.

J X B
crosses have certain characteristics.  One of the prominent features is the blue color on the petioles.  Also, one may see barbs on the leaflet tips, folding back of the leaflet ends, or splitting of the leaflet tips.  As a larger garden plant you always see retained leaf bases compared to the smoother trunk of pure Jubaea

If you don't want to wait for a seedling to get big, try one of these eight to ten year old plants.  They are cold tolerant to 15 degrees F.  or lower and love full hot sun.  I'd estimate growth rate to be two times faster than pure
Jubaea.
On special this morning I'm offering our newly arrived and very nice 15g size on sale.

JUBAEA CHILENSIS
THE CHILEAN WINE PALM
FAT TRUNK - BUT SLOW GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

For those not seeking a hybrid, we also got in some very nice 15g Jubaea chilensis, the Chilean Wine Palm.  They are not huge but very nice.  Basal diameters are about 6 inches or more.  And, the price is right.  Compared to the hybrid above, these will have a classically clean and smooth trunk.

This species gets the fattest trunk of all palms (up to 4 feet wide), gets to a typical mature height of over 30 feet, wants full sun and is slow growing.  Cold tolerance is about 16 degrees F.  The 15g shown here are about 8 years old and nicely sized.  This size (as shown) is affordable and can be shipped to anywhere in the U.S.  We have limited numbers available.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS
NURSERY CREDIT FOR USED PLASTIC POTS

I'd like to remind plant enthusiasts to recycle their plastic containers.  We will take them and give you a credit toward any purchase at the nursery.  Or, if you just don't know what to do with them and are conservative minded, drop them off at our nursery location.  We'll put them to good use.  We've been doing this for decades and think it's the right thing to do for the environment.  We are especially looking for larger pots, 15g and bigger.  We also really appreciate 7g and citrus pots.  However, tiny pots like 4 or 6 inch are not containers that we really utilize.

So, don't clutter the environment by giving them to the garbage man or your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!

A Quick Look at Some Cold Hardy Species

ALLAGOPTERA ARENARIA
THE SEASHORE PALM
CLUSTERING, DWARF PALM

This pinnate palm rarely gets over six feet tall, is native to coastal Brazil and has fluffy leaves (plumose).  It's a sun species with a cold hardiness into the upper teens F.

Allagoptera arenaria  Allagoptera arenaria

ARENGA ENGLERI

THE DWARF SUGAR PALM
SUCKERING, NOT TOO TALL

This suckering Asian species doesn't get over about ten feet tall and has silver color to the back of the leaflets.  The leaflets have chopped ends.  It'll take coastal sun and part day sun inland.  Cold tolerance about 18 degrees F.

BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT - YES, BLUE COLOR!

This variety of the South American Pindo Palm is super color because of its unusual blue color.  It gets to a height of about fifteen feet in three decades and is single trunk.  It loves full sun and is cold hardy to 15 degrees F.

BRAHEA CLARA
BLUE SINGLE TRUNK MEXICAN PALM
SUPER COLD HARDY

This palm is quite similar to the more common Brahea armata.  It loves sun, takes cold to 15 degrees and is blue in color.  It gets to a height of no more than 20 feet.  Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan Palm, it has longer petioles and is faster growing.  Another curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.  Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more like a bad set of shark's teeth as shown here.
Brahea clara Brahea clara

BRAHEA DECUMBENS

BLUE, DWARF AND SUCKERING
EXCELLENT COLD HARDY SMALLER PALM

This suckering species of fan palm develops a blue color with age and sun.  Shown is a 5g.  We never can keep them in stock to get them to 15g.  They love hot sun, get to a height of no more than six feet and sucker.  this is an ideal palm where views are a concern.  They are very slow growing.

Brahea decumbens Brahea decumbens
BUTIA X SYAGRUS
THE MULE PALM
HYBRID THAT LOOKS LIKE NEITHER PARENT

This surprisingly very cold hardy palm is being grown in areas that routinely see bad weather.  When Queen Palms die in Tucson, AZ, this one survives.  It gets to 25 feet and loves hot sun.  Some say that, when mature, they look a little bit like a Coconut.  It's also a very good growing hybrid with lots of vigor.  It likes sun and is cold hardy to about 16 or 17 degrees.

COPERNICIA ALBA
TALL THIN TRUNK
SINGLE STEM FAN PALM

Copernicia is a rare genus of fan palms mostly native to Caribbean Islands such as Cuba.  This species has a thin trunk and gets over 40 feet tall.  For an exotic genus, it's surprisingly cold hardy perhaps into the upper teens F.  It loves sun and heat.
Copernicia alba Copernicia alba
JUBAEA CHILENSIS
CHILEAN WINE PALM
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM

This thick trunked pinnate palm is slow growing but manages to get a trunk fatter than any other palm.  Native to Chile, it can reach a height of 40 feet and trunk diameter of 4 feet.  It loves hot sun and is cold hardy to 16 degrees.  The 15g plant shown here is 10 years old.  This is why this species is more costly than other palms.  The trunk is also smooth as shown here with no attached leaf bases.
Jubaea chilensis Jubaea chilensis

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS

THE CHINESE FAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM SIZE

This Asian species never really gets to a height much above 25 feet.  It's so slow growing that anything over ten feet seems to take an eternity.  It has a twelve inch thick trunk and flat green leaves.  In most areas it takes full sun but also tolerates filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 18 degrees F.
lIVISTONA CHINENSIS lIVISTONA CHINENSIS

LIVISTONA DECIPIENS
AKA LIVISTONA DECORA
MEDIUM TO TALL HEIGHT, THIN TRUNK

This Australian fan palm can get over 40 feet tall, has a thin trunk and droopy leaflets.   Because of the latter fact it's known as the Ribbon Palm.  Leaflets hang toward the ground.  It likes full sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It's quite handsome.
Livistona decipiens decora Livistona decipiens
PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
CLUMPING SPECIES MEDIUM SIZE

This is a type of Date Palm that clusters.  It gets its name from the fact that trunks recline (lean) with age and height.  It has a variable height.  But, you can count on at least 15 feet.  Some clumps get taller.  It loves sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.
Phoenix reclinata Phoenix reclinata

PHOENIX THEOPHRASTI
THE CRETAN DATE PALM
BUSHY AND NOT TOO TALL

This Date Palm is native to the island of Crete, southern Greece and some nearby islands.  It is a suckering palm and not quite as tall as the Phoenix dactylifera.  Its dates are not edible.  Leaf color is typically lime green.  Height can get up to thirty feet.  Leaves are quite plumose.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees or lower and it loves full and hot sun.

Phoenix theophrasti  Phoenix theophrasti
SABAL CAUSIARUM
TALL FAN PALM
THICK CONCRETE LIKE TRUNKS

This Caribbean fan palm can get rather tall, up to fifty feet.  Its remarkable characteristic are the thick, concrete colored and appearing trunks.  They are really impressive and get up to two feet thick.  Leaf color is blue green.  This palm loves sun and is cold hardy into the mid to upper teens F.
Sabal causiarum Sabal causiarum
SABAL MINOR
THE SMALLEST SABAL
DWARF PALM - SIX FEET TALL

This fan palm is native to the southeastern part of the U.S.  It rarely gets over six feet tall.  It puts out blossoms that are taller than the leaves, producing many small black seeds.  Leaves are sort of large compared to its dwarf height.  It can take sun or shade and is cold hardy to 15 degrees.
Sabal minor Sabal minor

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
SUPER COLD HARDY
SMALL, CUTE LEAVES

This Asian species of Windmill Palm is quite difficult to find.  That's because it's very slow growing.  The 15g plant shown here is about 8 years old.  They typically don't get tall.  In a few decades, a ten foot palm could be expected.  They love full sun and are cold hardy to 15 degrees F.  Leaves are quite small and flat as shown here.

Trachycarpus wagnerianus Trachycarpus wagnerianus

SYAGRUS SCHIZOPHYLLA X ROMANZOFFIANA

THE COCONUT QUEEN
BEAUTIFUL HYBRID PALM YET COLD HARDY

We don't know as of yet the cold hardiness of this very handsome hybrid palm developed in Thailand.  It's quite a new thing.  It is prettier than both parents.  Anticipated height is 30 feet, so it's shorter than a standard Queen Palm.  It likes full sun and appears to be cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.
Syagrus schizophylla x Queen palm Syagrus schizophylla x Queen palm by JI

TRITHRINAX ACANTHICOMA
AKA TRITHRINAS BRASILIENSIS
MEDIUM HEIGHT, SPINEY TRUNK

This South American, single trunk fan palm is unlike some of its suckering kin below.  This plant gets to a height of about 20 feet and has a random pattern of long spines protruding from the trunk.  Leaves are green, medium sized.  It likes sun and is cold hardy well into the upper teens F.  The trunk is indeed different - liked by some, hated by others.
Trithrinax acanthicoma Trithrinax acanthicoma

TRITHRINAX CAMPESTRIS
SUCKERING BLUE FAN PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT

This South American species is nothing like T. acanthicoma above.  It suckers, has a prominent blue color and has sharp points on the end of its leaf segments.  But, it is attractive and cold hardy to about 17 degrees F.  Expect a mature height of ten to twenty feet.

GREAT PALM TREES FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Below are pictures of about thirty five palm species that all do well in Southern California.  In the group of palms below,  I left off the most common species that, it seems, everyone knows about.  So, there are no Queen Palms and Mexican Fan Palms below.  But, this group includes species that may be a bit unusual and more interesting.  This is not a complete list.  For instance, within any given genus, there may be dozens other species that do well here.  If I showed every species that you can grow, it would be too overwhelming.  So, I've kept it simple and show representative pictures.  I think, for a starting point, this will suffice.

I have chosen to show mature plants in gardens.  I tried to use mostly pictures from gardens in Southern California to show examples.  Some are from elsewhere.  This provides a quick view of species that you may want to try.  Some are for sun, others for shade.  Some are more difficult to grow than others.  I'm not commenting on each species presently.  But, throughout my Blog, there are comments on almost all of these.  If you don't live here in Southern California, realize that many of these species may live in your area as well.

I hope you enjoy this.  We, of course, have most or all of these palms for sale at the nursery in an assortment of sizes.  And, for your enthusiasts, we probably have several hundred other cool species for you to try.

PLANT CONTAINER SIZES

For growers here on the West Coast, there are black plastic containers that most of us use on our plants.  Surprisingly, there are differences between
the pots used on the West Coast and East Coast of the U.S.  Here we refer to most containers by "gallon size"  On the East Coast pots are referred to
by "diameter in inches".  So, back East you might find a plant in a "14 inch pot".  Here is might be called a "15 gallon pot".  If you visit our price
and availability catalog, plants are shown by their pot size.  I'm hoping that this Blog post this morning will help clarify what individual pots look like.

CONTAINER SIZE PHOTO EMPTY CONTAINER PHOTO OF PLANTS IN
THIS CONTAINER
BAND SIZE CONTAINER
This pot is 3 x 3 x 9 inches, square in shape.  It is used for seedling plants.  For most growers, it has replaced the one gallon pot.  It is a bit deeper and easier to place in carrying trays.  It also conserves space on benches because these can be placed close together.  You can get a pretty nice plant in a band container, sometimes up to 30 inches tall.
band container chamaedorea in band
ONE GALLON POT
This is a very common pot used, especially by flower growers and those producing small shrubs.  It's a typical first step after germinating a seedling.  We prefer using the band containers above as they conserve table and bench space more efficiently and are deeper.  Diameter of this pot is six inches but it's only about seven inches deep.
one gallon pot plants in 1g pots

TWO GALLON POT
This pot is 7 to 8 inches wide and about 8 inches deep.  It is a nice size to move a band plant into.  But, it is not particularly deep, so you have to make sure the roots fit into the container. This pot will produce an average plant that is about 2 feet tall. We grow a lot of palms in these pots.
2g pot empty plant in 2g oot
FIVE GALLON POT
This pot is 10 inches wide and about 10 inches deep.  It produces a plant that is one of the most common sized palms that we sell.  It is popular because it's not too heavy to lift and plants are typically three to five feet tall, depending on the species.
5 gallon pot plants in 5g pots
SEVEN GALLON POT
We really like this container because it produces a good sized plant but isn't as heavy to carry as a 15g.  But, for some manufacturing reason, this pot costs twice as much as a 15g.  Therefore, most growers aren't buying this sized pot very much nowadays.  It is 12 inches wide, and about 12 inches deep.

FIFTEEN GALLON POT
This is the most popular sized purchased by people who want a landscape or near-landscape ready size of plant.  This container typically supports a palm from four to eight feet size.  Weight of this size of container with soil and plant is usually sixty to ninety pounds.  It's size is 15 to 16 inches wide and 16 inches deep.  Note how this size pot usually has a nice carrying lip at the top of the pot.

TWENTY/TWENTY-FIVE GALLON POTS
This is the next size up from a 15g.  These pots are typically about 18 to 20 inches wide and 16 to 18 inches deep.  They weight anywhere from 125 to 150 pounds with their soil.  They can produce a plant larger than the 15g, typically 8 to 10 feet. They usually have a flat lip on the top as shown. The pot shown here is actually a 25g pot.  20 g are a bit smaller.

24 INCH BOX CONTAINER
This box is 24 inches wide, square in shape and about 22 to 24 inches deep.  The weight of this container depends on the mix, but is anywhere from 175 to 300 pounds (this heavier weight is if one is using a very heavy soil).  It takes two men to lift one of these.  We prefer plastic boxes as shown here, but they are much more expensive than wooden box.  They last a very long time.
