MORE RARE PALMS AND UNUSUAL TROPICAL PLANTS JUST IN FROM PRIVATE COLLECTION - DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE
INDIVIDUAL PLANTS ON SALE FOR TEN DAYS!

About two weeks ago we got in palms and tropical plants from a private collection in Ocean Beach, CA.  We couldn't get it all in one day.  So, we returned 2 days ago and got the rest.  This gives us the opportunity to show some more plants on special.  There's not a lot, but some real choice items.  Regular prices (if applicable) and Sale prices are given.  The sale applies to these individual plants and not to our general inventory.  These plants are presented in random order.  Remember, these are individual plants from the collection and we have no backups on most.

KENTIOPSIS OLIVIFORMIS
NEW CALEDONIAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, UPRIGHT LEAVES
HEIGHT TO 35 FEET
NICE SPECIMEN IN 30G CLAY POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This single trunk pinnate palm is native to New Caledonia and gets to a height of about 35 feet.  It is crown shafted and tends to hold upright leaves.  The leaf stems are speckled with dark spots.  Growth rate is medium.  It can take full sun in most coastal areas.  Container size is a 30g clay pot.

REGULAR PRICE $450

ANTHURIUM SPECIES
DARK LEAVES
SIMILAR TO A. HOOKERI
5 GALLON POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This unusual Anthurium is in a 5g pot.  I've not seen one like this before.  In a way it resembles the Birdsnest Anthurium, A. hookeri.  But, there are definite differences.   First, as the leaves age they get almost black in color.  Hookeri doesn't do this.  The leaves are also shorter.  Finally, it doesn't seem to be forming a trunk like hookeri would at this stage.  I'd recommend filtered light for this species.  I'd anticipate it'll never be over four feet tall.

RHAPIS HYBRID
PROBABLY R. MULTIFIDA X EXCELSA
DUG OLDER CLUMP
IN 35 GALLON CONTAINE4
7 TO 8 FEET TALL IN POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

Rhapis dig quite easily and usual suffer little setback.  This 35 gallon specimen was recently dug.  It appears to be a hybrid with multifida blood in it.  I say this because of the more narrow leaflets, some leaflets coming almost to a point and because of the wider central leaflet compared to the others.  These are all characteristics of Rhapis multifida.  Also, leaves are carrying nine to eleven leaflets, unlike Rhapis excelsa and the canes are super narrow.  If I were to guess, I think it's a cross between multifida and excelsa.  It's quite attractive.  This plant wants filtered light and should not get much tall.  Rather, it will put out more canes.

TI PLANT, GREEN SPECIES
SHORTER WIDE LEAFLETS
5 GALLON, OLD SPECIMEN

Very frequently we have color Ti plants.  These are often red or pink.  This is a pure green variety or species.  I occasionally have green Ti's in stock but this one if different.  It's more of a dwarf plant.  It has short and very wide paddle like leaves.  It's in a 5g pot and is about 30 inches tall.  It'll most likely want filtered light.

OLD VARIEGATED VINING PLANT
SIMILAR TO A POTHOS
LIGHT AND DARK GREEN COLORS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This cute climbing vine has multiple running stems and is in a smaller sized pot.  The interesting thing is the variegated leaves - at least two shades of green.  This would be the perfect plant to run up a palm or other trunk in filtered light.  It would also be very easy to propagate.

ANTHURIUM PEDATUM
ANTHURIUM WITH LARGER MULT-SEGMENT LEAVES
SUPER RARE AND DIFFERENT
IN 3 GALLON CLAY POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

It is possible that this is still a juvenile plant and isn't showing the anticipated mature foliage.  I say this because the photos I reviewed of this species, when mature, have different appearing leaves than what this plant has now.  But, they could change over time and age.  A. pedatum leaves are very cool.  This plant had a label saying Anthurium pedatum.  It's in a 3g clay pot that has a broken part.  We'll be repotting it.  It'll want filtered light.  If it's indeed A pedatum, it's unbelievably interesting.

ANTHURIUM PLOWMANII WITH RUFFLED LEAVES
OLD MATURE PLANT IN A 15G POT
EXOTIC COMPANION PLANT
FILTERED LIGHT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

As part of the collection we showed two weeks ago, we had a much smaller Anthurium plowmanii.  The plant today is the ruffled form of this species and super rare.  You'll probably not find it at too many nurseries in the country and certainly not with this age and size.  This plant is an estimated 20 years old and fully filling a 15g pot.  It's about mature size.  It's a filtered light plant.

ANTHURIUM PODOPHYLLUM
ABSOLUTELY BIZARRE LEAF!
SUPER COOL LOOKING
IN AN APPROXIMATE 3G CLAY POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This is yet another super rare and unusual companion plant that you'll likely find nowhere else.  Note how the long leaflet segments hang down from the central leaf in a pendulous manner.  Color is a light green.  This plant has two leaf stems and leaves.  It's in a clay pot.  I really like this plant.  It is very different appearing.  I do not think this plant is a climber at all.  Of note, as with all other plants shown today, this was outdoor grown in the San Diego area.

LONG LEAF STEMS
WAVY LONG GREEN LEAVES
20 YEAR OLD PLANT - 25 GALLON CONTAINER
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This totally mature yet unknown species of Anthurium is a real show stopped.  Unfortunately the label got lost at some time during the past two decades.  It has leaves that are over six feet long with huge, long heart shaped leaves.  Leaf color is green.  There are two trunks, one larger than the other.  It's in a 25g pot.  It would want filtered light.  This plant is probably too big to mail order.

BURRETIOKENTIA HAPALA
NEW CALEDONIAN PALM
OLDER PLANT IN 30G CLAY POT
IF YOU WANT, IT COMES WITH ALL THE BROMELIADS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS PLANT

This is a medium height, single trunk, crown shafted palm from New Caledonia.  It is very sought after and can be grown by lots of people in this area.  I'd estimate it's age at ten years.  It's in a big clay pot.  Along the coast, I'd give it half day morning sun, a few hours of sun or strong filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the mid to upper twenties F.  Of note, it comes with about six or more flowering Bromeliads at its base.  They come with the plant.

CHAMAEDOREA CATARACTARUM
A SEMI-DWARF CLUSTERING PALM
DOES BEST IN LESS THAN FULL SUN
GETS TO SIX FEET TALL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This species of palm has been sold in the best as the "Cat Palm".  For Chamaedoreas and in the past, it was fairly easy to find.  Nowadays it's very difficult to find, especially with mature size as shown here.  It is a clustering palm that gets six feet tall.  It really doesn't form any trunk.  It likes water as it has a native habitat near river beds.  It is cold hardy into the mid 20's F. and I'd recommend, at most, a few hours of sun or filtered light.

DYPSIS LUTESCENS
THE ARECA PALM
CLUSTERING PALM MATURE AT ABOUT 14 FEET HERE IN CA
SUCKERING PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL TWO SIZES!
This is an attractive, suckering, thin trunked palm species is from Madagascar or surrounding areas.  The number one reason people buy this species is "to hide something".  By this, I mean they want to hide a neighbor, an ugly next door structure, an unsightly fence, the side of a garage, etc.  This is an ideal species for this purpose as it suckers and is fairly dense.  You can't see through it well.  Mature height averages 14 TO 16 feet in California.  Sometimes they are taller or shorter, depending on culture.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  Trunk diameter is about 3 inches.  It'll take full sun along the coast and far inland areas must give it only morning or filtered sun.  I am offering two larger sizes on special for ten days.

BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM
HARD TO FIND BLUE LIKE THESE
RUGGED AND COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

Native to South America, this medium sized pinnate palm is quite popular.  But, they are normally green or a blue green in color.  The plants I'm showing here are a clone that is super blue!  They are very cool and super popular.  And, they are hard to find.  Mature height is 15 feet with a trunk diameter of about 18 inches.  They loves sun, even in the desert.  A bonus:  fruits are edible and taste good.  This is why it's also called the "Jelly Palm".  If you plant this clone in shade, the blue won't show as well.  This size can be shipped.  It is cold hardy to about 15 degrees F.

BRAHEA ACULEATA
MEDIUM HEIGHT MATURE
THIN TRUNK
RETAINED OLD LEAF BASES

This single stem fan palm is native to northern and western Mexico.  It is not a tall palm.  Heights vary from 12 to 25 feet with an 8 to 10 inch thick trunk.  Leaf color is green to blue green.  Old leaf bases will persist for some time on the trunk but eventually fall off making a smoother trunk.  The crown is not overly large.  Growth rate is medium.  It is a full sun species with cold tolerance down to the lower 20's F.  The special today is for the 5g size.  I've previously but bands on sale as well.

BRAHEA BERLANDIERI
MEDIUM SIZED RARE FAN PALM
NATIVE TO MEXICO
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

At the onset, I might mention that the lumping taxonomists have combined this "species" with Brahea dulcis.  This expanded its habitat from northeastern Mexico to a new distribution including Mexico and down into several Central American countries.  This also changed height descriptions and leaf color.  With this said, these plants should give a green colored palm that will get to between ten and twenty feet tall with a trunk eight to ten inches thick.  It forms a petticoat of old leaves.  It is drought tolerant, takes temperatures to the low 20's F. and prefers full, hot sun.  The size on sale here are the 5 gallons as shown.

This is a South African cycad species that prefers part day sun or strong filtered light.  It's easy to grow. LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA
USER FRIENDLY CYCAD
NO SPINES WHATSOEVER!
TEN DAY SPECIAL CIT POT/5G SIZE

I enjoy talking about this species because it is one of my favorites.  It is a large species over time.  I say 'user friendly" because this is one of the few species that has absolutely no spines; none of the leaflets, none one the stems.  A leaf brushing across your face feels no more intense than brushing past a Maiden Hair Fern. We have a huge selection of this species.  I am going to show you an assortment of plants.  Below are a few of the main characteristics of this species:

*Large species with trunks slowly getting to over ten feet
*Leaf length typically six to eight feet, sometimes bigger.
*Trunk diameter to 18 inches
*Smooth petiole with no spines
*Great for strong filtered light or full sun along the coast
*Large interesting cones
*Leaflets soft and glossy green in color
*New leaves emerge upward, older leaves lay more horizontal
*Easy to grow

I've found that even customers who say "I only like palms, not cycads" tend to love this species.

Please see description at today's blog.  Very desirable cycad.

This Madagascar palm is known as the "Triangle Palm" because the crown shaft has three flat sides.  It gets to a mature height of about 22 feet in 3 decades.  It loves heat and sun.  Leaves are a gray-green color and there is prominent speckling in the inner crown with dark colors.  It is slow growing.  It has a cold tolerance of about 24 degrees F.  The 15g plants on special are chunky and nice.

SABAL MEXICANA
MEDIUM TO TALL FAN PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

At one time this species was much more prevalent in Texas, but in recent times its numbers have dwindled.  Native habitat extends from Texas down through Latin America on both coastal sides of these countries.  In habitat, specimens up to fifty feet have been observed.  Trunks are straight and columnar.  Trunk diameter is typically twelve to eighteen inches.  Most domestic plants are in the twenty to thirty foot range.  Old leaf bases are retained in the upper trunk area but will fall way with age.  The crown is green with a hint of silver and full.  This species is similar to Sabal palmetto but usually bigger with a larger crown of leaves.  Like the Palmetto Palm, it is very cold hardy, perhaps even to ten degrees F.

Shown here are some 5g plants which I'm putting on special.  I've also shown a 15g and some garden plants.  This is a full sun species and a great selection for someone in a colder area.

CANNA LILY
NICE 5G NOW AVAILABLE
DARK PURPLE LEAVES
ORANGE BLOSSOM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Canna Lilies are a tropical or semi-tropical perennial plant.  They are not a true Lily but called a Lily.  This type of thing happens all the time, especially with "palms".  They are probably most closely related to Gingers.  I've found the foliage is a bit less appealing in winter.  Then, in summer when it's warm, they do their thing with rapid growth of pretty foliage as shown here and a prolonged display of colorful blossoms.  They can take our coastal sun or part sun.  I have several types/varieties available.  I'm showing one with very pretty dark foliage today.  It has bold orange flowers.   Limited supplies are available.

DIOON PURPUSII
NEW ACQUISITION
MATURE PLANT WITH 18 INCHES TRUNK
DUG FROM PRIVATE GARDEN

Dioon purpusii is known as one of the most rare species of the Dioon family.  It is native to Mexico.  In the wild, plants have been found with up to 5 meters of trunk.  It is known for its strongly keeled, rather narrow leaves that are green or gray-green in color.  Leaflets, especially on younger plants, are often armed with small spines.  It is fairly cold hardy and loves sun.  The plant shown here was dug yesterday from a private collection.  It has about 18 inches of trunk and was put into a 20g container.  We got a great root ball.  It is for sale.  This is probably one of the largest of this species that we've offered for sale.

PIECE OF CAKE TO SHIP!

The Kentia Palm is known as one of the best house plants you can grow.  It also does well in a patio location or the garden.  The plants on sale today are "singles" - one plant per pot.  Many people prefer this for interior usage because singles take up less room horizontally and grow faster than a multi.  Sometimes several plants are put into the same pot, thus creating a "multi".  But, the plants one sale now are both singles.  They are fairly slow growing.  They like adequate interior light.  Leaves are dark green with a long petiole.  Either size shown here is quite simple to ship anywhere within the U.S.

Although not quite as cold hardy as the Tasmanian Tree Fern below, this species is easy to grow for most of us here in Southern California.  It's a good grower and fairly fast growing.  Trunks get to about 8 to 10 inches in diameter and heights can easily get to 20 feet or more.  They can take some sun, especially morning sun.  Or, strong filtered light can work.  Full sun is too much for them in most areas.  The plants shown here in the first photos are large 5g plants I'm putting on special.  Remember, they like water.  Cold tolerance is from the mid-twenties to the upper 20's F.  These can be mail ordered.  Also, they can be used as a patio plant.

DICKSONIA ANTARCTICA
THE TASMANIAN TREE FERN
FAIRLY COLD HARDY, THINNER TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 5G SIZE

This typically single trunk tree fern is native to Southeastern Australia and Tasmania.  It is much slower growing than the Australian Tree Fern above and has a mature height typically of 8 to 10 feet although they can get even taller.  Trunks are a similar diameter to the Australian Tree Fern.  Of note, apparently the lower trunk is filled with old, decaying trunk material and new roots grow through this material to get water and nutrition.  Cuttings of the top of the trunk can be re-established and root out.  This plant likes a bit of sun or filtered light and also loves water.  Cold tolerance is 25 degrees F. or lower.  The 5g on sale here are very nice as shown.

TRACHYCARPUS PRINCEPS
THE WHITE BACK / STONE GATE WINDMILL PALM
THE MOST RARE WINDMILL
FLASHES OF WHITE UNDERSIDES!

There is no question that the most sought after of the Windmill palms is Trachycarpus princeps.  It is known for the silver-white backs to the leaves.  We just acquired two one gallon plants, probably about five years old.  I only have these two.  If this is a plant you've always wanted, act quickly as they'll be gone soon.  There's an area in Southern China called "Stone Gate" and that is where these plants originated.  There they live on the faces of near vertical cliffs, hundreds of feet above the valley floor.  How they grow in their habitat deserves an article all by itself.  Fantastic photos of this have been taken by S. Ringot, some below, of this amazing place.  The last pictures shows off the white backs to this species' leaves.  They are very cold hardy, taking snow with not problem.  Grow in full or at least half sun.  These plants are easy to ship and priced at $95 each.  They are expensive because they are so rare, so slow and near impossible to find!

CARYOTA URENS
THE GIANT MOUNTAIN FISHTAIL
FAST GROWING - SUPER TALL
WHY NOT START WITH A BIG PLANT?
MONSTER 24 IN BOXES AVAILABLE

Yes, this species of Fishtail is super fast growing.  And, it's not unusual for one to get above 70 feet tall.  Some people love the grandeur of these palms.  And, for some, they want it "right now".  Well, this is an opportunity to satisfy that need.  Planted out, these boxes are well over fifteen feet tall in their boxes.  See how they tower over Alma?  They want full sun and, especially if inland, plenty of water.  If you examine their leaf structure here, you can tell them easily from another Fishtail Palm, Caryota gigas, which I present below.  The latter also have dark trunks whereas C. urens are very light to tan colored as shown here.  We've got them both and in many sizes.

CARYOTA GIGAS
THE BLACK TRUNK FISHTAIL
SMALLER, TIDIER LEAFLETS
FATTER TRUNK - MORE ORGANIZED LEAF
BIG 25G SIZE AVAILABLE

If you compare the leaves and leaflets of this species to Caryota urens above, you notice that C. gigas leaflets are smaller, more uniform in their placement on the leaf stem, have an almost scalloped type outer leaflet edge and don't have that "chopped off" leaflets seen with the urens.  Most think the C. gigas is a more attractive species.  The trunks are darker, sometimes almost black.  Also, these trunks get much fatter at the base.  But, surprisingly they are only half the mature height of the urens.  It's rare to see them in So Cal over 35 feet tall.  They easily take full sun here and really respond to adequate water.  If you are having problems with yours, just try giving it more water.  They usually respond.  The 25g here are about 12 feet tall in their pots and begging for a home to go to.

BRAHEA DECUMBENS
SEMI-DWARF BLUE FAN PALM
NEVER GETS OVER SIX FEET
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This suckering blue fan palm is popular not only because of its color but also by the fact that it's quite small in stature.  The largest domestic plant I've ever seen is about six feet tall.  It needs to be in sun to get blue and never shows the color when young and in a smaller nursery container.  But, not to worry, they always get blue.  Native to Mexico, it is slow growing and does form offsets.  It takes full, hot sun and is cold hardy to about 18 to 20 degrees F.  Our 5g are nice and on sale.

RECENT ARRIVAL HUGE MULE PALMS
BUTIA CAPITATA X SYAGRUS (QUEEN PALM)
MASSIVE 24 IN BOX SPECIMENS
MEDIUM HEIGHT -
SUPER COLD HARDY!

Recently we got in a nice collection of massive 24 inch Mule Palms.  For those who don't know, this amazing hybrid doesn't look like either parent.  The seed bearing parent has to be the Butia capitata.  The pollen donar is the Queen Palm.  The reverse doesn't produce a palm anything close to the Mule Palm.

They are remarkable because they are supper attractive.  Some say they have a resemblance to a Coconut.  They also usually just get to 25 feet - compared to the 60 foot height of the Queen.  And, they are very cold hardy - down to about 16 degrees.  I've got a customer in Tucson, AZ that can't grow Queen Palms b/c they freeze in the winter.  Our Mule Palms thrive there.  This hybrid tolerates desert sun.  And, they don't make any fruit to mess up your pool!  This is why they are called the "Mule" Palm.  What a combination of good qualities!

The plants we have are 12 feet tall with one foot thick bases.  They are lush and gorgeous.  We can deliver them to you as they are really too big for a smaller pickup truck.  They will not last long.  If the qualities I mentioned above appeal to you, consider getting one or more while we have them.

UNUSUAL LARGER BROMELIAD
AECHMEA HYBRID
VARIEGATED LEAVES
THREE FEET TALL
ORANGE PUPS!

There's a story on how I came across this interesting Bromelidad.  I had a customer who wanted to add the color orange to his garden and he wanted to do it with Bromeliads.  This led me to approaching a Bromeliad enthusiast.  He had a hybrid that has orange pups.  It matures into a green and white adult plant but suckers like crazy with orange offsets.  So, I brought some in and have been growing them.  Mature height is about 30 inches or more.  They seem to be rugged and durable plants.  Limited supplies.

CHAMAEDOREA RADICALIS
THE REGULAR FORM
DOESN'T FORM A TRUNK
NICE 5G TRIPLES!
SUPER COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Speaking of cold hardy, filtered light palms, two days ago we got in a batch of super nice, outdoor grown Chamaedorea radicalis. This is the original form of this species that we "old timers" knew as the true thing.  They don't form a trunk.  The get to a height of about three to four feet and the blossoms (male or female) surge up above the leaves with bright orange flower stalks and, if a female, big black seeds.  It's super impressive.  The plants shown here are three per pot in a 5g.  Note the darker green leaves, the wider leaflets and the short stature.  The "trunking" form (one photo below) has thinner leaves, leaves are gray-green, and it rapidly forms a trunk.  Both are filtered light or part day sun plants with cold hardiness of 18 degrees F.  Along with the C. microspadix above, these are easily being grown in colder areas like San Francisco and Houston, TX.  I can mail order these plants.  Limited numbers available.

RAVANALA MADAGASCARENSIS
THE TRAVELER PALM
ALL LEAVES IN ONE PLANE
NICE 10G SIZE - EIGHT FEET TALL IN THEIR POTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE!

This is a tropical tree from Madagascar that gets over thirty feet tall.  But, it can be grown in Southern California if you don't freeze.  It gets a trunk about ten inches to a foot wide, brown in color.  The leaves are flat and green, reminiscent of a banana leaf.  This species does sucker.  In my opinion, specimens look best if suckers are removed.  This provides better viewing of the flat plane of leaves that go from side to side.  This characteristic is called "distichous", all in one plane.

Hard wind can tear the leaves.  So, a protected location is probably best.  Cold tolerance is down to a freeze.  Temperatures of thirty degrees or below will "melt" this plant overnight.  It is a good and fast growing species and tolerates full or part sun.  Folklore says to plants the leaves going east to west, i.e. with maximal southern exposure.

This super popular  palm is native to south Florida and Cuba.  It gets a very tall trunk with a height of forty feet or more.  The crown shaft is long and a prominent green.  The base of the trunk is swollen just above the ground.  Often you'll also see bulging in the mid-trunk.  It is a full sun plant and some are growing it in desert areas with success - in full sun.  Cold tolerance is like a King Palm, about 25 degrees F.  The one gallon on sale are 2.5 years old.  There's a shortage of this species on the market.  These are easy to mail order.

SPECIMEN JUBAEA CHILENSIS AVAILABLE TO BUY
THE CHILEAN WINE PALM
MARKEDLY DISCOUNTED PRICE!
NEED A CRANE BUT THEY DIG QUITE WELL

I am helping the owner of this mature Jubaea chilensis who wishes to sell it.  In case you don't remember, this palm has the thickest trunk of any palm in the world.  And, it's the most upscale and expensive larger palm that is used on high end landscape projects.  It sort of looks like a Canary Palm but has no spines.  It's felt to be much more desirable than a Canary.  The plant I'm presenting is in the ground in the San Francisco Bay area and available right now.  Mature Chilean Wine Palms are never cheap to purchase.  But, this seller is willing to sell it for less than half the going retail price.

Call me for details and pricing - you'll be pleased - HUGE DISCOUNT!!  But, remember that a digging crew and crane will be needed.  It's close to a street with what appears to be good access for digging.  It has approximately 20 feet of woody trunk.  Trunk diameter is about three feet.  The plant available is shown in the first five pictures here.  Following are garden pictures of other trees.  There are so few mature specimens available of this species, that it's quite typical for a dug plant to be transported quite long distances to their eventual new home.  And, if found through a usual supplier, they'd be twice the price to you.  So, this tree is a great opportunity for someone.

PRITCHARDIA REMOTA
OVERHEAD TROPICAL FAN PALM
NATIVE TO HAWAII
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON SIZE

This attractive fan palm is native to the islands of Kauai and Nihau in the Hawaiian chain.  It lives at about 500 feet elevation or more in dry forests.  There, some plants are found on dry cliffs.  Maybe because of its natural habitat, it does quite well in Southern California.  Plants get up to about 20 feet height with a narrow trunk for their height.  Leaves are green with some divisions of the leaf segments.  Fruit is medium-large in size, up to 3/4 of an inch.  Culturally, this species takes full sun on the coast and wants morning sun further inland.  Cold tolerance is down to 25 to 27 degrees F.
The plants on sale are one gallon although we may have larger sizes available.

HEDYSCEPE CANTERBURYANA
SILVER CROWN SHAFT, LORD HOWE ISLAND PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON SIZE

This medium sized, crown shafted palm is native to Lord Howe Island.  There are four species of palms from this island.  The Kentia Palm is at the lowest altitude, near sea level.  Next up the mountains is the Howea belmoreana.  Then, above the belmoreana is Hedyscepe.  Because of this, progressively more cold tolerance (slight) is seen.  When grown in part day sun or strong filtered light, this species has a silver trunk.  If grown in sun, the silver is limited to the crown shaft.  Leaves are curved and keeled.  Growth rate is slow.  Cold tolerance is about 24 degrees F.

ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII
LARGER CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL ANY 15G PLANT WE HAVE!

This unique and larger cycad is native to Uganda.  In fact, at one point it was called the "Uganda Giant Cycad".  This is because it has leaves that extend almost straight up toward the sky and can be twelve feet long or more.  Leaflets are narrow and armed with small spines.  The caudex is a light color and in the wild can be up to ten feet tall.  Historically, as this species is similar to E. laurentianus, it was called also "Encephalartos laurentianus Lake George", referring to its specific habitat.  The nursery plants I'm showing today are multiple newly acquired and outdoor grown 15g plants.  We have other size as well, both larger and smaller.  Note the appearance of these plants with their long leaves with narrow leaflets.  Enthusiasts love this species because it's a good growing cycad.  Right on the coast I'd give it half day sun.  It's not quite a sun-tolerant as many of the South African species.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.

PHILODENDRON BIPENNIFOLIUM
THE HORSEHEAD OR FIDDLE LEAF PHILODENDRON
CLIMBING SPECIES WITH UNUSUAL LEAF
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2 GALLON SIZE

It's happened over time but we have a pretty nice selection of rare Philodendrons, both climbing and rosette forms.  Luckily, we are fortunate to be on an exchange program with a well known botanical garden and get really cool aroids from time to time.  They want rare palms and cycads.  In return, we get rare aroids.  So, on any given day, you may drop in and see tropical companion plants that you just can't find elsewhere.

This species is from Brazil.  I am actually showing two different plants that I think are both considered to be bippenifolium.  But, they are a little different.  The third photo shows how juvenile leaves are totally unlike the mature arrowhead shaped leaves.  This is a climbing species that can go well into the canopy from roots in the ground.  It is a shade loving plant that tolerates temperatures down to about a freeze.  Come by and check out the unusual species that we offer.

Shown in the first 3 pictures is a rare and undescribed species of Philodendron.  Many plants of this genus are climbers.  This means that they will literally climb up a fence, pole or trunk of another tree.  Such is the case with the species shown here.  Please note its interesting leaf shape.  We got stock of this species from a large botanical garden in LA where we have an exchange program.  It comes from a plant in the wild.  For sure, you'll not find this species at any local nursery.  This plant has seen a freeze at our nursery and is a good grower.  The last two pictures show epiphytic plants on palm trunks including a Philodendron and a Moosehorn Fern.

MEDIUM SIZE, WHITE UNDERSIDE TO LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANT

This single trunk fan palm is native to regions stretching from Mexico through Central America.  In the genus, there are multiple species.  All have prominent white powder on the underside of the leaflets as shown here.  Trunks are narrow.  Often you'll see what look like "spines" on the trunk.  But, these are a different structure - they are modified root spines.  They are quite interesting looking.  Right on the coast, this species can take full or part day sun.  Most would grow it in bright filtered light.  Expect heights ranging from ten feet to well over twenty feet.  Cold hardiness is into the upper twenties F.

AGAVE VILMORINIANA

ANOTHER WATER CONSERVING PLANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

This species of Agave in native to northern Mexico with perhaps extension into the U.S.  It is not a large plant.  Mature height is up to four feet with a similar spread of the leaves.  The leaves are thick and fleshy and soft at the end.  There is no terminal hard point to them.  The leaves go out and then curve downward.  They are slow growing, green to blue-green in color.  Culturally, they are xerophytic with low water requirements, are somewhat tropical appearing for an Agave and like full, hot sun.  By the way, they get their common name b/c of their mature appearance (last photo) that sort of resembles an octopus.  Below is also a photo of the 15g size which we have or can get for you.

Shown here are the one gallon size of this branching palm from Africa.  Of course, you only see this branching habitat when it's in the ground and gets much larger.  It likes heat and sun.  Cold hardiness is somewhere in the mid-twenties F.  The interesting thing about these plants is that they branch above the ground - to be contrasted with suckering from the base.

BRAHEA BRANDEGEEI
TALL, QUICK GROWING BRAHEA
GREEN LEAVES, SORT OF WISPY
THIN TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

Rarely do I have this hard to find palm and even more rarely do I put it on special.  It's one of the hardest of the Braheas to locate.  It can reach heights of over 80 feet and is native to Baja California, Mexico.  Trunks are thin.  Crowns of leaves are open.  Leaf color is typically green as shown here.  One of the best places to see this species is in Balboa Park, San Diego, less than a half mile from where I live.  It wants full sun, tolerates wind and dry conditions and is a good growing species.  Despite it's beauty, its a solid grower and a fine addition to any garden.

DYPSIS MADAGASCARENSIS
MEDIUM SIZED -NATIVE TO ISLAND OFF MADAGASCAR
USUALLY SINGLE TRUNK - SOMETIMES SUCKERING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This palm is not native to Madagascar as most people think.  Rather, it's natural habitat is on an off-shore island named Nossi-be.  It has a medium sized trunk and gets to about 30 feet tall.  Leaves are plumose as shown here.  Most plants are single trunk although suckering forms do exist.  Leaves emerge in three ranks or planes, this characteristic called "tristichous".  There is a modified crown shaft.  In most areas this palm likes sun.  Cold hardiness is uncertain but probably in the mid to upper 20's F.

BRAHEA SPECIES "SUPER SILVER"
THIN TRUNK AND FASTER GROWING BLUE FAN PALM
VERY RARE, HARD TO FIND
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

About two years ago we ran out of this un-named but super desirable blue Brahea.  It resembles a Brahea armata but is faster growing, gets taller and has a much thinner trunk.  It is native to Mexico.  Seeds have only been available twice.  The last batch came out an estimated seven years ago.  I had about 50 plants and they flew out of the nursery, particularly to people who see cold weather.  I thought I was out of them, but recently acquired some nice one gallon and band sized plants.  For those who have grown Brahea, you'll be pleased with the growth rate of this species (un-named).  If you are in a cold area or love blue palms, you have to try one of these.  And, they are on sale!  Color will be blue when outdoors.  Cold hardiness is into the teens F.  It wants heat and full sun.  Did you get that these are super rare and hard to find?

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM
NEWLY EMERGENT RED LEAF
SINGLE TRUNK - GORGOUS!
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a super popular single trunk, pinnate palm from New Caledonia.  It is known as the Flame Thrower Palm because of its newly emerging red leaf.  This color lasts for two to three weeks and ranges in color from a dark burgundy to a pinkish-red.  Mature height is about 25 to 30 feet with a thin to medium girth trunk that has a long green crown shaft. Sometimes you'll see marbling of the trunk - known as the watermelon trait.  There is also a blond crown shaft form called Chambeyronia hookeri.  Growth rate is slow with most plants making two leaves a year.  It tolerates full sun right on the coast.  Far inland, people give it filtered light or morning sun.  Cold hardiness is about 23 degrees F.

YUCCA ROSTRATA
SUPER BLUE FOLIAGE
SEMI-DWARF SUN PLANT
TOLERATES VERY COLD WEATHER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

This small to medium sized, drought tolerant plant is native to the southern U.S. border and down into Mexico.  It is usually a single trunk mature plant but can fork above the ground.  Most notable is the silver-blue foliage as shown here.  It is very slow growing.  Over time it forms a trunk about eight or ten inches thick.  Foliage is about 2 feet long and not "pokey" or sharp.  It demands full sun and is cold hardy at least to the lower teens F.  Gardeners like this species because it's not very big and gives nice color to a sunny garden.  Although not part of our Blowout Sale, I'm offering these at a discount to Blog Readers.

THE ONLY CYCAD FOR FULL DESERT SUN
DROUGHT TOLERANT
THE MOST COLD HARDY CYCAD
JUST IN - CONING SIZED 15G PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE 15G

This remarkable cycad is so useful in the garden.  It is the best species for super intense sun and tolerates temperatures to the mid-teens F.  I was once hired to do a study as to which cycad species is best for a rooftop garden on top of a high rise Las Vegas hotel and casino.  I gathered experience from every desert cycad enthusiast I knew.  The final conclusion was Dioon edule.  Nothing else would take that blasting sun and heat.  Native to Mexico, this species rarely gets over six feet tall.  Growth is very slow.  Cold tolerance is about 15 degrees.  The 15g we just got in were desert grown and are huge.  Many are coning as shown here.  Caudexes average 7 to 8 inches.  Leaves are green to gray green.  These plants are also very drought resistant.  Although not part of our Blowout Sale, I'm offering Blog Readers the ten day special below.

RHOPALOSTYLIS CHEESEMANII
MEDIUM SIZED, VERY GRACEFUL
GORGOUS CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Of the Shaving Brush Palm family, this is the hardest one to find.  And, many think it's the prettiest and most desirable species.  Some consider it to be a variety of R. baueri.  We like to consider it a species.  Native to Raoul Island, an island well off the eastern side of New Zealand, this species has a medium sized trunk and reaches a height of twenty five feet.  The crown shaft is gorgeous but not as swollen as R. sapida.  I have some customers who report the crown shaft being a purple color.  On younger plants, the leaf stems are red colored as shown here.  Cold tolerance is the low 20's F.  It will take coastal sun or consider morning sun or strong filtered light inland.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This Asian species of fan palm is super slow growing and, over a few decades, can get 20 feet tall.  It tolerates coastal sun or shade.  In shade, its leaves are flat, dark green and super glossy and very flat.  Trunk diameter is about a foot or a bit more.  Cold tolerance is into the upper teens F.  It also makes a great patio plant and some have grown it inside the house.  Because it's slow growing, it doesn't reach the ceiling for years.

BECAURNIA RECURVATA
THE PONYTAIL PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

We just got in our spring supply of this popular succulent plant that is certainly not a true palm.  Yet, all of its common names call it one.  Native to Mexico, this plant typically gets ten to fifteen feet tall with a peculiar, expanded caudex at the base and a crown of strap like leaves.  These emerge upward and than hang down in a fountain fashion.  As shown here, sometimes new leaves show a red tint.

The most amazing thing about this species is the bizarre forms it can take on.  It can have multiple heads of leaves, multiple emerging trunks from the caudex base and the size of the base can get massive.  I've seen photos of small cars parked on top of the base of this species.

Shown here are nice 5g plants with about five inch bases.  This size is affordable and easy to ship.  It is a sun loving species and cold hardy somewhere into the mid-twenties F.  Cold may damage the leaves but usually plants come back the following season.

AN INTERESTING THING ABOUT BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
THE LEAF STEMS:
HAIRY PETIOLES or
SMOOTH, CLEAN PETIOLES

I think once before on this Blog I talked about the presence of hairs on this blue fan palm, Bismarckia nobilis.  I first started looking at this about fifteen years ago when a garden owner Gary Michaels in the Crown Point area of San Diego pointed out the difference between two Bismarckias he had in his yard.  One was the typical appearance with hairy leaf stems.  The other had absolutely no hairs.  It was as clean as stainless steel - shiny, smooth and easily noticed.  I had not been aware (probably just didn't look closely enough) of this prior to this time.

So, I started observing all our Bismarckias at the nursery for this.  And, I looked at the stems of garden plants.  I've found, over time, that maybe one in fifty or a hundred is the super clean and smooth type.  You must inspect the petiole top to bottom.  If the smooth type, it's clean all the way to the palmate leaf.  And, all stems match.  You are either looking at a hairy one or a smooth one.

Gary had the idea that the smooth type is more likely to be female.  And, he thought the smooth type was more intensely blue.  I can't say that either of these conclusions by him are true.  I just don't know yet.  But, if you start looking, you too will find some very cool smooth ones.  Look at your plant and those in your area.  You'll now start observing Bismarckia in a totally new way.

COPERNICIA BAILEYANA
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?
FROM THIS TO THAT?
EIGHT YEAR OLD 5G PLANTS

I've always appreciated how slow it is to grow Copernicia.  It takes six months to germinate seeds and then you look at blades of grass for four years.  Then, finally, you see palmate leaves.  The 5g plant shown here is literally eight years old!  By far, this is my favorite species of the genus.  It has these huge, off-white columns for trunks.   Can you believe that this little guy will make the monster, beautiful fan palms shown here?  Yes, it is true that this genus in the ground is faster.  But, that's not an option for a nursery as this genus doesn't dig that well.  So, a palm enthusiast must start small if he's in California.  But, the wait is worth it.  A customer of ours got a smaller plant from us and now, about six years later, it is very nice and well overhead.  Our plants are still below you knee.

But, to go from this to that is amazing!

Some folks call us for interior quality palm trees.  But, they want absolutely perfect, interior quality plants and nothing less.  The Kentia Palm is a superior interior palm.  And, we have interior quality.  What this type of customer is looking for is a plant that has been grown in a controlled environment, has no blemishes or bad leaves and has perfect color.  This is not an exterior grown palm where one deals with weather.  Well, we can offer these.  They are not cheap as they are imported from perfect growing conditions in Hawaii.  But, if you own or are associated with a big office building, restaurant or hotel, give us a call.  The ones shown here are about 12 feet tall.  We can ship but remember, shipping big plants is not inexpensive.  And, if you are a demanding home owner who has to have "perfect", these might keep you happy.

PHOENIX RECLINATA
SUCKERING LARGE DATE PALM
HUGE 15 GALLON AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

All Phoenix palms are considered to be species of "Date Palms".  The true Date Palm is Phoenix dactylifera.  This is the one that gives good tasting edible dates.  But, there are many other types of Phoenix including the popular Pygmy Date Palm, the Canary Island Date Palm and others.  Many Date Palms are single trunk.  The most famous of the suckering types of Date Palm is Phoenix reclinata.  This latter species in native to South Africa.  In its purest and habitat form, it has flat leaves in cross section.  If you look at reclinatas around Southern California you will find many have plumose leaves with different ranks of leaflets.  This is from chronic hybridization with other Phoenix over the years.

This species likes sun, can get up to 40 feet tall (typically to 20 - 25 feet) and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  Leaf stems are armed with spines.  By the way, the name "reclinata" comes from the fact that outer trunks "recline" and lay out at an angle before growing upwards.  Clump size can be limited by eliminating trunks as needed.

Recently with got in a shipment of huge 15 gallon Phoenix reclinata.  Some in their pots are about ten feet tall to the top of the leaves.  All are suckering.  I'm putting them all on special.

FICUS LYRATA
THE FIDDLE LEAF FIG
LEAVES SHAPED LIKE "FIDDLES"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 TO 6 FOOT PLANTS

I
f you could go back forty years, the Fiddle Leaf Fig was a very popular houseplant.  Then it fell out of popularity.  In the past few years it's surged back and suppliers can't keep them in stock.  It grows easily inside the home if you give it low salt water.  I.e., distilled or reverse osmosis water.  Outdoors it grows quite well in Southern California.  I have three of these in my garden and they grow like crazy.  Mine are 25 feet tall.  The plants on special are five to six feet tall.  Mail order is possible although these plants are large and wide.

SERENOA REPENS
SUCKERING SEMI-DWARF FAN PALM
LEAVES GREEN TO BLUE
NATIVE TO THE SE UNITED STATES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This suckering fan palm is native to the southeastern gulf states of the U.S.  Native habitats even extend up into the Carolinas.  It gets to a mature height of six to eight feet.  It loves sun and heat.  Leaf color varies from blue to green or somewhere in-between.  It is slow growing and has smaller sized leaves.  It forms a clump over time.  The plants on special are three years old.  I can't predict the mature leaf color on these although they are supposed to be eventually a blue color.  Of note, young plants never show blue.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.

BLUE ENCEPHALARTOS LONGIFOLIUS
GORGEOUS SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
CURVED LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Among staff members at our nursery, this is one of the favorites of all the cycads we grow.  Encephalartos longifolius is native to South Africa.  There are habitat populations with both green and blue leaves.  Both varieties are very desirable.  A nice thing about this species is that it gives a larger and faster growing blue cycad when compared to blue species like Encephalartos lehmannii and horridus.  Leave have a nice curve downwards as shown in some photos here.  It would not be unusual to get a plant with several feet of trunk in two to three decades.  Width of the crown is larger than lehmannii, usually six to seven feet.  E. lehmannii is more petite in comparison.  The bands on this special are about 2.5 years old with three to four leaves.  They can be easily shipped.  This species prefers full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA
ONE OF THE MOST TROPICAL APPEARING CYCADS
SHADE LOVING
MANY SIZES AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON THIS SPECIES!

This species of rare cycad has always been one of my favorites.  This is because it doesn't get overly tall, has lush green leaves and is a great species for the floor of the garden below canopy.  Its leaves hold a more horizontal position when mature.  So, it does need about an eight to ten foot circle of space to have enough room.  But, what a breathtaking plant it becomes!  You can sneak it between the trunks of overhead plants as shown below.  Presented here are several coning sized specimens so you can appreciate the appearance of this New World cycad from Mexico.

Leaflets are typically six to ten inches long, green in color and leaves are about five to six feet long and gently arching.  Leaves stems have small spines.  An identifying characteristic of this genus are the spines on the cones - unique to Ceratozamia (abbreviated "Cz").   A plant many decades old won't have a caudex more than two feet tall so this species will never be over about 8 feet tall maximum and typically not over five feet.  So, it doesn't block a view into the garden.  Young plants (as shown) are hardly noticeable as this species but mature into larger plants as shown.   This species is surprisingly cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.  It is easily being grown in the SF Bay area.

FURCREA MACDOUGALII
MEDIUM SIZED GRAY-BLUE PLANT
STIFF, UPRIGHT LEAVES
VERY DROUGHT TOLERANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

For those who have followed this Blog, you'll remember about four to five years ago when we first obtained this desirable, drought tolerant species as small bulbils off a customers plant that flowered.  Now some are finally into 15g size.  They should be good to grow in these pots for a few more years at least.  This species loves sun, never gets over 10 to 15 feet tall and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  It is slow growing.  Mature trunk diameter is about 8 inches.  Leaves are a gray-blue.  These are quite rare and hard to find.  A plant has to die to produce small vegetative bulbils.  This is the only way to produce this plant.  There is no supply of "seeds".  It is native to Mexico.

BUTIA X JUBAEA
CHUNKY 15G PLANTS AVAILABLE
SUPER COLD HARDY
THICK "JUBAEA-LIKE" TRUNK
BUT MUCH FASTER GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

I am showing here the limited selection of this very cold hardy hybrid that we have available.  This is Jubaea x Butia capitata with the Jubaea being the seed bearer.  This hybrid gem is more cold hardy than a regular Jubaea chilensis.  These are chunky 15g with trunk diameters of about five to six inches. I'll mention below traits that show you these are this hybrid:

Keeled leaves whereas regular Jubaea are much flatter
Some blue color to the leaves
Abundance of hair/mat at the base of the petioles
The blue color to the leaf stem

Note that the present of barbs on the leaflet tips ban be seen with pure Jubaea or these hybrids.  This is an extremely rare hybrid and hardly ever available in this size.  It is not uncommon for enthusiasts to pay very high prices for rare intergeneric hybrids in small sizes.  Here's a chance to get an eight year old plant on sale.  And, there's very few of these this size available anywhere in the country.

PINANGA CORONATA
THE IVORY CANE PALM
SUCKERING PALM FOR FILTERED LIGHT
CAN BE GROWN IN SO CAL
NICE 25 GALLON SPECIMEN AVAILABLE

This suckering and medium height pinnate palm is native to Indonesia and is being grown by many in Southern California.  It seems to tolerate temperatures into the upper twenties F.  It does not take full sun - at best a little early AM sun.  Mature height is about 12 feet or a bit more.  Cane diameters are one to two inches.  Leaflets are fairly repetitive in width and length (compared to Pinanga kuhlii - a similar plant - which has variable leaflet widths).  Sometimes you'll see a bit of mottling to the green leaflets.  This palm shown here from the nursery has about three feet of stem on the main trunk.  Overall height is about ten feet in the container.  It is suckering.  It's ready for a nice garden.  We do have smaller plants available.

PLUMERIA PLANTS
LARGE 5 GALLON AVAILABLE
SOME BRANCHING
THREE TO FOUR COLORS

Very nice 5g Plumeria just became available to us and are three to four feet tall in their pots.  Most have branches with lots of leaves.  Some are just coming into flower.  On this size if they don't have flowers, it is a gamble as to which color they'll end up being.  They like sun and heat.  Cold tolerance is down to a freeze or slightly below.  These are extremely difficult to ship by mail order b/c the stems are brittle.  My favorite is the pink.  Limited supplies.  We can get very large 15g on special order but they are fairly expensive.

RHAPIS MULTIFIDA
THE CLASSIEST OF HOUSEPLANTS
BEAUTIFUL SQUAT 20G SPECIMEN
THIS IS THE LARGEST WE CAN SHIP
THIN TRUNKS, LOTS OF LEAFLETS

Over the years, I've certainly pushed this type of Lady Palm from China.  I've done this because I think it's one of the prettiest Rhapis and it does great inside the home or on the patio.  It never gets too tall - about eight to ten feet
et maximum.  It's canes are thin and tidy.  They carry little scrappy debris like the classic Lady Palm Rhapis excelsa.  They have three times the number of leaflets per leaf, sometimes up to more than twenty.  These leaflets are narrow and come to a point.  Excelsa and much wide with a blunt end.  Multifida like filtered light outdoors and are cold hardy to the low 20's F.  Sizes we have are the one shown here and the 5g.  I can mail order right to your door.

HYOPHORBE VERSCHAFELTII
THE SPINDLE PALM
BULGING TRUNK ABOVE THE GROUND!
MUCH BETTER FOR CO CAL THAN THE BOTTLE PALM!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

If you live in Southern California, the chances are 99% that a Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) will die in your garden.  They don't tolerate our winter's cold.  If you live along the coast, the chances are 75% that you can successfully grow the Spindle Palm.  Plain and simple.  You might ask why a certain depot type store only sells the Bottle Palm.  It's because the Spindle Palm can't be imported into CA from Florida because of lethal yellow disease.  So, one has to grow them from seeds here in California. And, that takes a long time.  But, that's exactly what we'd done.  So, we can offer you a Hyophorbe with a bulging trunk that you CAN grow and is on sale!

And, the Spindle Palm is easier to grow, gets taller and has a cigar shaped trunk that is super cool.  Mature height in 25 years is about 15 feet.  It loves sun.  Cold hardiness is just below a freeze.  The one gallon size here are fantastic - very large for their pots with heights of 24 to 30 inches.

ZAMIA FURFURACEA

THE CARDBOARD CYCAD
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 15G SIZE

This small cycad species is native to Mexico.  It is known as the "Cardboard Palm" although it's not a palm at all.  The "Cardboard Cycad" is a much better name.  It has thick hard leaves, thus the name "cardboard".  It is a small cycad, rarely over four to five feet tall.  It suckers freely.  Along the coast it tolerates full sun but needs filtered light far inland.  Leaflets are essentially unarmed with no spines.  Color is green to yellow green depending on light exposure.  Cold tolerance is about 22 to 25 degrees F.

We recently got in some nice 15g plants that are coning size and full.  Some already have cones on them.  Some are single caudex, others have multiple stems.

Enthusiasts love this species for a lot of reasons.  It is small, never over about four feet tall.  It is also quick growing with attractive fern like leaves.  It also tolerates filtered light or coastal sun and is easy to "sneak into" that small open area on the garden floor.  We are offering citrus pot plants at an excellent price.  This species is CITES protected and endangered in the wild.  Mature leaf length is three feet.  This species is easy to cone and you might want to consider getting a male and female plant so you can help conserve this great species.  If available, I can select sexes for you..

UNKNOWN DWARF ZAMIA SPECIES
FROM THE CARIBBEAN
TWO VERY OLD MATCHING PLANTS
BOTH CONING SIZED
TEN DAY SPECIAL
WANT TO SELL AS A PAIR

Just yesterday I got in these two Zamias from a private collector.  They are a matched pair in 5 gallon containers.  This person didn't know the species name but did know the seeds for both plants originated in the Caribbean and are coning sized.  One plant is a male for sure.  The cones are shown here.  The other plant's sex is unknown.  This will be a dwarf species not more than three feet tall.  It'll tolerated full or partial coastal sun and have an anticipated cold hardiness into the mid-twenties F.  The unusual thing about the leaflets of this plant are that they are long, super narrow and have pointed ends.  Most Caribbean Zamias have blunt ends.  I could guess what it might be but rather am just calling it "species".  I'd like to sell the pair together so maybe the buyer can get seeds.  Plant ages are estimated at ten to fifteen years.

SPATHODEA CAMPANULATA
THE AFRICAN TULIP TREE
RED - NOT TOO HARD TO FIND
YELLOW - ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE

Native to dryer areas in Africa, the Spathodea campanulata is a colorful and good sized tropical tree.  Heights can range from fifteen to seventy feet.  Most trees I've seen in California are not over 25 feet.  They have a long blossoming period that begins in mid to late summer.  But, here's the catch:  Almost all you'll find have the orange to red-orange blossoms.  It's unbelievable hard to find the yellow flowering form.  They survive drought but like water.  They want sun and cold tolerance is about 27 degrees F.  The flowers shown here are from nursery plants.

We do have a few of the yellow blossoming form.  I have a 20g and a couple 5g.  They'll not last long and can be mail ordered in the 5g size.

New Cycad Collection Banner June 2016

JUST ACQUIRED EARLY JULY

RARE PRIVATE PALM AND CYCAD COLLECTION
SPECIES WITH SIZE THAT YOU NEVER SEE AROUND
ALL AVAILABLE FOR SALE!
OUR TEN DAY SPECIAL HAS ENDED -
BUT, WE'LL OFFER GREAT PRICES ON THESE PLANTS

AND GIVE A "GUARANTEE"DESCRIBED BELOW

A long term customer of our Nursery decided to sell his home.  He cannot take the plants with him.  He contacted me and told me that "everything" in the garden is available.  His garden is over a decade old.  His collection included only rare cycad and palm species.  He had only unusual and sought after items.  Many plants removed are at the nursery but not shown here.  On a few items there are multiple plants to choose from but only one is shown.  All plants were dug with attempts by our staff to get sizeable root balls.  We did not dig anything that mandated a crane removal.

These dug plants were quickly brought to our nursery and potted up in the appropriate containers.  It took about four days to dig the plants shown here.  Not so much with cycads, but with palms there is to be expected some plants that will not make it.  We'll probably see signs of stress or shock within the next several weeks.  We'll be able to tell which palms probably won't make it by the end of the month - although this is no guarantee that they'll survive.  But, I wanted to show you these rare plants sooner than a month from now.  Many are nowhere to be found on the market and all plants below are extremely rare.  Many of the plants below may sell very quickly as customers just can't find these species.  So, I tried to come up with a plan that is fair to the customer as well as our nursery.

OUR OFFER/GUARENTEE TO BUYERS OF ANY PLANTS FROM THIS COLLECTION:

All of these plants were dug from the garden.  So, f you buy any of the plants from this collection, we'll hold them for free at our nursery with your name and receipt number on your purchased plants.  After a month or two (maximum three months), you can inspect your plants.  If, for any reason, you do not like the looks of your plant and no longer want it, you can tell us so and you'll receive a credit for the purchase price as a credit toward anything else in our inventory.  Or, if it dies during this waiting period, you'll be notified of your credit amount.  This credit is dollar for dollar spent on the plant that doesn't survive the dig with no discount or fees applied to your credit.  But, this offer only applies to plants kept in our care at the nursery.  If you decide to gamble and grow the plant at your home/garden, even if kept in the pot, there is no guarantee.  We cannot monitor proper care while a plant is in someone else's possession.

So, pick what you'd like at no risk.  If it doesn't survive as above, you'll receive a 100% credit toward something else in our inventory.  There are additional plants from this collection at the nursery.  Plants are being presented in alphabetical order although I'll divide them into two plant groups.  I'll make minimal comments about the species shown.  Remember to apply your discount to the price shown.
