BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
VERY SHIPPABLE 5G SIZE
NICE BLUE COLOR
COLD HARDY - LOVE HOT SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Although not the most cold hardy of palms, Bismarckia can go easily into the low 20's F.  This means that folks in northern CA, Houston, South TX, the Central Valley of CA and many other areas can give them a try.  They love heat and sun.  In Phoenix and desert areas they thrive.  Just give them adequate water if you live in the desert.  These 5g nice blue form plants are easy to ship.  Just call us and we ship within 24 hours.

REGULAR PRICE 5G $65

LIVISTONA LANUGINOSA
THE CAPE RIVER LIVISTONA
TALL WITH THIN TRUNK
5G SIZE TEN DAY SPECIAL

This Australian fan palm is a very interesting species and also known as the "Wooly Livistona".  It is apparently threatened in habitat.   In the northeastern part of Australia it lives at an altitude of 200 meters.   It reaches a height of over fifty feet with a trunk that's a bit over a foot thick.  Leaf stems have barbs and leaves extend out six to eight feet.  It is most similar to Livistona marie but, by report, has larger fruit.

It enjoys full hot sun.  In previous years this species was more available but is quite hard to find now.  We have a limited number of 5g available.  Cold tolerance is unknown but probably into the low 20's F.

This species of thick trunked fan palm is native to Dominican Republic and Haiti.  It can get to over 60 feet tall with a massive 2 foot thick brown trunk.  Leaves are larger than the similar but smaller Sabal palmetto.  Growth rate is quick.  It is also very cold hard and likes full hot sun.  It can go down to the mid-teens F.  The 5g size shown here can be easily shipped.

DYPSIS CRINITA
SHORT TO MEDIUM PALM
USUALLY SUCKERS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This species of pinnate palm is from Madagascar and has hairy, fibrous covering over its younger trunks, gets to a variable height of ten to thirty feet and typically clusters, forming three to four trunks.  It is also known for putting out new pink or red leaves. Trunks can branch above the ground or sucker at the ground.  For someone who likes smooth trunk, crown shafted palms, this one might not be for you.  But, it is impressive and needs some room to grow.  It would be best in sun or part day sun.  Cold tolerance is about mid-twenties F.  We've not had problems outdoor growing this species.

REGULAR PRICE 5G $75

ZAMIA ANGUSTIFOLIA
DWARF CUBAN/CARIBBEN CYCAD SPECIES
TEN DAY SPECIAL VERY OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This dwarf Zamia species is quite rare and has leaves that are typically about two feet long.  A plant in the garden is rarely over three feet tall.  Trunks get up to about 8 inches with most of the trunk being subterranean.  Leaflets are very narrow.  New leaves emerge a reddish-brown color and are very soft.  There are some spines on the petioles but not on the leaflets.  The crown is wispy and somewhat open.

The band sizes we have are at least ten years old.  Many have coned right in this small container.  Remember, this is a dwarf species.  They tolerate part day or full day coastal sun but would need bright filtered light inland.  Maybe they'd even work as a house plant.

DYPSIS HYBRID PALM, TWO GALLON
DOMESTIC CROSS WITH D. ONILAHENSIS
TEN DAY SPECIAL

These plants came from seeds from a domestic garden where a Dypsis onilahensis hybridized with some unknown other Dypsis species.  Seeds came off a pure D. onilahensis tree.  Reports on this cross so far are that it's a great grower and more cold hardy than regular D. onilahensis.  The grower lives in a colder area and says these "did fine" while regular onilahensis suffered. So, for you cooler climate guys, this might be a great species for you to try.  I've only got ten of them and there are no more available.  I'd only be guessing at predicting future appearance.  So, it's sort of a fun gamble.  We presently have plants that have been in 2g pots for a while and are real nice.  Very limited numbers.

ARENGA PINNATA
THE SUGAR PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This single trunk pinnate palm is felt to be probably native to Indonesia and gets its common name from the fact that sugar is harvested from the trunks of mature specimens.  This is a tall species and can get up to fifty feet of height.  The trunk is thick, often to 24 inches, and covered with a mesh of woven fibers.  Leave can get quite long, well over twenty feet.  The top of the leaflets are dark green but the underside is silver.  The overall leaf appearance resembles a Caryota but this species is not bipinnate and Caryota leaflets are never silver underneath.    This species likes full sun and is cold hardy into the lower 20's F.  Several mature trees are located in the San Diego area.

DIOON RZEDOWSKII
RARE MEXICAN DIOON SPECIES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This is a rare cycad species from various mountainous regions in Mexico.  You hardly ever see them for sale, especially with any size.  These seed grown plants are over ten years old, have been outdoor grown for over five years and have seen part or near full day sun.  Mature plants have leaves about five to six feet long, narrow trunks that get up to 15 feet and minimal armor on the leaflets.  The plants on special are in 15g pots and have caudex size of six to seven inches.  They can take full sun right on the coast.  Otherwise, consider them a part day sun species.  Cold tolerance is down to the low 20's F.  The last two photos are from plants in the wild c/o J.O.

WALLICHIA DISTICHA
SINGLE TRUNK, LEAVES IN ONE PLANE
A VERY INTERESTING AND PECULIAR PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This unusual palm that has all of its leaves in a single plane.  That is to say from the front, it is a fairly large, "Caryota-appearing" palm tree.  But, looking from the side, it is narrow and you can hardly see it.  The dictionary definition of "distichous" is:  "Arranged in two vertical rows on opposite sides of an axis: distichous leaves. "  In this case, the trunk of the palm is the axis.

This species is native to the Himalaya Mountains in Asia, spreading from northern India across to northern Thailand.  There it grows at altitudes of up to 4000 feet.  Because of it's heritage and as you might guess, it does have some cold hardiness and can easily be grown in many areas of Southern California.  It tolerates temperatures down to about the mid to upper twenties F.  It prefers full sun.  Mature height is about 30 feet.  Usually this species is single trunk, but in the wild suckering specimens are found.  This is not to confuse it with another suckering species, Wallichia densiflora,  which is always a clustering species.

Wallichia could be confused with Arenga and Caryota, both of which are also from the same part of the world.  All have leaflets that have jagged or toothed apical ends as shown here.  All also go through a flowering process that begins at the upper trunk and works its way down the trunk over time.  And, all have stems that die after suckering.  When there is only one stem (as with this species), the tree will die after it flowers.  Seeds of Wallichia disticha are very small as shown here.  The back sides of Wallichia and Arenga leaflets are silver whereas Caryotas are green on the back side.  This helps in identifying the genus.  Trunks of Wallichia disticha are also covered with dense brown fibers as shown here.

We have very limited numbers of this species for sale.  For someone who likes different species, this one is for you.

AGAVE VILMORINIANA
OCTOPUS AGAVE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

This species of Agave in native to northern Mexico with perhaps extension into the U.S.  It is not a large plant.  Mature height is up to four feet with a similar spread of the leaves.  The leaves are thick and fleshy and soft at the end.  There is no terminal hard point to them.  The leaves go out and then curve downward.  They are slow growing, green to blue-green in color.  Culturally, they are xerophytic with low water requirements, are somewhat tropical appearing for an Agave and like full, hot sun.  By the way, they get their common name b/c of their mature appearance (last photo) that sort of resembles an octopus.

PHOENIX PUSILLA
PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST RARE DATE PALMS AROUND
BAND SIZE FROM WILD COLLECTED SEEDS
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

It's almost impossible to get this smaller and super rare species of Phoenix.  I was lucky to get some wild collected seeds two years ago and am now offering band sized seedlings at a discount.  Native to India, mature this species is rarely over ten feet and has a maximum of fifteen feet.  The trunk is typically eight to ten inches thick.  It is usually a single trunk plant but can sucker.  Leaves are six feet long and flat.  This is a sun species and I don't know for sure the cold tolerance.  But, most Southern California areas should be able to grow it.  These seedlings are on approximately their fourth to fifth leaf.  This is the only size I have for sale and I know of no one else that has them.

PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA MEDJOOL VARIETY
THE TRUE DATE PALM
TEN DAY SALE 5 GALLON PLANTS

This is a great cold hardy plant, being able to tolerate temperatures down into the mid-teens F.  It is hard to find this cultivar of the True Date Palm.  This is the one that gets blue and makes the best tasting dates.  The plants I'm offering on special were grown in a greenhouse so they are not showing that blue color yet.  But, they will when given direct sun and heat.  Remember, you need a male and female to get dates and the female bears the fruit.

These are nice 5g plants about three to four feet tall.  They demand full sun, can get up to 40 feet tall and inherently can sucker.  One would remove the suckers if he wants a single trunk.

REGULAR PRICE 5G THIS SPECIES $65
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $45

These are easy to ship.  Just remember to mention this Special so you get the discount. The fifth and six figures are stock photos to demonstrate the color.  They are not the plants on special today.  Of note, we only have limited numbers of these 5g plants available.  Don't dally.

INTERIOR QUALITY PALMS - PERFECT CONDITION
ALL AVAILABLE NOW AND DESIRABLE SIZE FOR MAIL ORDERING
PLANTS IMPORTED FROM HAWAII

Most of the plants you'll purchase from nurseries have been grown at that nursery and has seen all the aspects of weather.  This may include cold weather, wind, rain or hail, and trauma from being moved around in a nursery.  Opposed to this are plants that were grown specifically for interiorscapes.  This means plants are instantly ready for bank lobbies, hotels, professional offices and upscale businesses.   They are also perfect for interior usage in your home.  When one purchases such plants they are often sold with a contract for professional maintenance.  We do not do the latter, but we can provide the same top quality interior palms for you home or business.  And, we can offer advice on how you dan maintain the plants.

Below are some examples of sizes that can be mail ordered or easily delivered.  Most are five to seven feet tall.  This is the perfect size for most home and business applications.  Availability changes over time.  These plants are beautiful and without any blemishes, scars on the leaves or unsightly leaflets.  They have been grown in a tropical area, typically Hawaii, and pampered to look beautiful.  Be aware that interior quality palms are more expensive than regular nursery stock.  But, some customers demand this quality.  If you see a species you like, most likely we offer it as well as part of our regular inventory.

If you want any of these plants, just drop by the nursery or give us a call for mail order.  - 619 291 4605

SOME UNUSUAL COLD HARDY PALMS AND CYCADS
AN ASSORTMENT OF IDEAS
ALL THESE SPECIES TOLERATE 22 DEGREES F. OR LESS
SOME DOWN TO 15 DEGREES!

About two weeks ago a customer from Fresno, California visited our nursery and picked out about 20 palms and cycads that were cold hardy.  We arranged very affordable shipping by an independent trucking agency.  She was on vacation and gave us a 2 week delay to ship.  I informed her that she could expand her order for no or just a little more of a trucking fee.  She was quite interested.

In case you don't know Fresno, it's in Central California in the San Joaquin Valley and a bad winter there sees temperatures into the upper teens F.  So, we took pictures of some very different and unusual palms and cycads that would take her weather.  These would be in addition to what she already ordered.  I thought I'd share with you some of the ideas we had.  All the plants shown here will tolerate temperatures down to about 22 degrees or lower.  Some will even go down to the mid-teens F.  The Encephalartos need cold protection below 20 degrees.  Plants shown here are mostly 15 gallon size with a few 5 gallons.

We have all these species available for sale and can work out the most affordable shipping method to get plants right to your door.  If you live in Sacramento, the SF Bay area, Houston, northern Florida or other colder areas, you may be able to grow all or most of these plants.  We also have smaller sizes available that we ship through Federal Express.  Contact us and we'll work out the best species for your area.

AECHMEA SPECIES
NEW ORANGE PUPS
VARIEGATED GREEN/WHITE MATURE LEAVES
LARGE BROMELIAD
TAKES FULL SUN

Last spring we got in some Bromeliad offsets from a private grower in our area.  He told me they were some type of rare Aechmea but didn't have a species name.  I was told that new pups the following year would be a prominent orange color.  Well, they grown and are now pupping and he was right.  Mature leaves are a variegated green and white.  The pups are beginning to show that orange variegated color.  Plants presently are two to three feet tall.  We had to put them into 5g and 7g pots because of their large size.  These do well in our full sun here.  I have about a dozen for sale.  These can be mail ordered.

ENCEPHALARTOS PRINCEPS
FROM A REMOVED OFFSET
TO A GORGEOUS PLANT -
18 MONTHS LATER
A GREAT WAY TO SAVE MONEY!
MORE COMING SOON!

In summer of 2014, for those who've followed this Blog over the years, you'll remember that we offered some great, healthy offsets of blue Encephalartos.  They were are very good prices because they had no leaves or roots.  They sold at prices 40% below the price of a leafed out plant.  This is a follow up on those plants.

First of all, all of the plants rooted.  I know of no failures.  There were about #35 of them.  Now, 18 months later, I think essentially all have leafed out.  This post shows you to the right (first photo) an Encephalartos princeps, just removed from the mother plant and of nice size.  The customer who bought this took us up on the offer to root and leaf out the offset for free.  The 4th through 7th pictures show this same caudex rooted and leafed out.  He's now ready to receive his gorgeous blue cycad.

I will be having another such sale in the next several months, so watch for it.  It'll be an affordable way to get a large, mature cycad.  Of course, if you don't want to wait, we do have about 25,000 other rare cyads for sale, all rooted and leafed - from seedlings to mature, coning plants.

This is a single trunk, pinnate, crown shafted palm tree from Australia.  Some refer to it as the "Alexander Palm", but this is a poor choice of names because of confusion with Archontophoenix alexandrae.  It is fairly cold hardy and tolerates temperatures well below a freeze.  I recommend starting it in part day sun or strong filtered light and allowing it to work its way up through the canopy.  Growth rate is about average.  Most prominent about this palm is its elegant appearance with a thin trunk, usually about four to five inches in diameter.  Mature height in this locality is usually under thirty feet.  The crown shaft is silver.  the leaflet tips are premorse and jagged at their ends (fifth photo).  This is one of the defining characteristics of this species.   .

Shown first here are several 5g plants followed by a 15g.  Also shown are a few specimens.  Many have found this to be an ideal palm in Southern California.  Inland areas would require some sun protection whereas it'll grow in full sun along the coast.  We have limited numbers of these for sale.

RHOPALOSTYLIS BAUERI
NORFOLK ISLAND PALM
FROM NEW ZEALAND
FAIRLY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

This very desirable species from New Zealand is medium size when mature, rarely over 25 feet tall.  It has a somewhat bulging crown shaft but not as fat as Rhopalostylis sapida.  There is an easy way to tell the two apart.  The Norfolk Palm has a red-brown color to the leaf stems and the leaves curve downward when mature.  These arching leaves are different than the stiff, upright leaves of R. sapida.  The latter has a gray color to the leaf stems.

I like it in part day sun along the coast.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees, perhaps a bit lower.  The first three photos shown are of the 1g which I'm putting on special.  We do have an assortment of sizes available.

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS
TROPICAL APPEARING FAN PALM
COLD HARDY, MEDIUM SIZE

TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This fan palm species is known for not looking like an arid or more desert appearing species.  This is because it's native habitat is in the more tropical southern Japanese islands and Taiwan.  It is a lush green palm.  It is slow growing and only gets to a height of about 20 feet although habitat plants can reach 40 feet.  You'll not see anything like that in most U.S. gardens.  Leaves are rather flat and the terminal part of the leaf segments will hang downwards as shown here.  Petioles with age lose their spines.

To get a ten foot plant in our locality may take 20 years.  It can be grown in filtered light or sun.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees F.

TILANDSIA SPECIES
AIR PLANTS MOUNTED TO A BOARD
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON NICE CLUSTERS, TWO SIZES

This spring we got in a batch of assorted clustered Tilsandsia.  We know the species names on some - on others we don't.  Some may have been collected in Mexico.  Each cluster was four or ten plants.  Joaquin decided to mount them on some flat boards as shown here.  We have done this many times before.  They are tied on with fishing line.  They'll root onto the board and be happier than clams.

We have two sizes as shown.  They tolerate full sun and just want to be hit by the hose ever week or two.  They'll most likely blossom in summer.  In my experience the blossoms are either pink, red or purple/blue.  I seen blossoms on many of these and they are stunning when in full bloom.  On these boards the clusters will get bigger and bigger over time.  They are fun to have.  They can be mounted on a post, tied to a palm trunk or just displayed on the patio.  They seem to tolerate pretty cold weather but I'm not sure of the minimum temperatures they'll take.  We've never had cold issues with them at the nursery.  We have limited numbers available.  Blossoms usually occur in the Spring.

DIOON SPINULOSUM
MEDIUM SIZED FILTERED LIGHT CYCAD
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE ONE GALLON

Native to Mexico, this cycad is easy to grow and quite attractive when grown correctly.  It does best in part day sun or strong filtered light in almost all areas.  It gets a trunk of over ten feet in about 100 years.  It makes a great patio plant and is minimally armed on the leaflets.  Some are having success growing it inside of the home.  Leaves are about four feet long.  Cold tolerance is approximately 22 degrees F.  The one gallon plants we're putting on special now have about 3 inch caudexes.  They are six years old.  This size is a piece of cake to mail order.

SATAKENTIA LIUKIUENSIS
ONE OF TOP TWENTY MOST BEAUTIFUL PALMS
BUT, WON'T TAKE A FREEZE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This single trunk and unbelievably beautiful species from the tropical islands of southern Japan has been grown by some in Southern California.  It is a bit of a challenge because this species does not tolerate a freeze.  But, if you just get down to the mid thirties F. or a bit lower, you may be able to grow it.  I'd recommend starting it in filtered light and letting  it emerge over time into the sun.  Mature height is about twenty to thirty feet.  It has a shiny, smooth crown shaft that sometimes is a purple-brown in color.  It is pinnate, tropical appearing and a medium growth rate species.  If you can grow this beauty, it's a real winner.  I have 5g on a ten day special.  I can ship these plants.

SABAL MINOR
DWARF, COLD HARDY FAN PALM
TEN DAY SALE BAND SIZE

This is a dwarf species of fan palm from the southern United States and is commonly found in the state of Texas.  It rarely gets foliage overhead with an average height of four to seven feet.  It has a long petiole and a small leaf.  The blossom produces an ample supply of small black seeds and juts upward above the foliage.  This is often a way to identify it as it produces flowers and fruit as a smaller plant.

It takes sun and can tolerate part day sun.  Cold tolerance is excellent, probably about 16 degrees F.  We're offering our band size on species.  This is the first four photos.  I've also shown garden plants, a 5g plant and seeds on a blossom.

REALLY NICE BROMELIADS
PINK NEROGELIA
SMALL, VERY PRETTY
A HARD COLOR TO FIND!

For those in search of colorful companion plants, you know that a difficult color to find is pink.  With our colorful Bromeliads, we usually have some in reds and purples.  But, recently we got in some definitely pink plants that are very pretty.  These can be added to the garden floor right in their pots.  You just bury the bottom portion of the pot and shower the plants with water every week or two.  They are easy.  Hopefully, there'll be others to chose from soon.   Remember, our spring color changes almost by the week.  Just drop in  and see what's new.

RAVANALA MADAGASCARENSIS
THE TRAVELER PALM
NICE 10 GALLON SIZE
EIGHT FEET TALL

I wanted to show you some very nice 10 gallon Traveler Palms that have recently become available.  These are about 8 feet tall planted out.  This species is usually grown as a single trunk plant but, left to its own, will sucker.  Most growers remove the suckers.  As you probably know, this plant is not a true palm.  They can get to a height of over 25 feet although such a height is usually not attained in California.  If you don't freeze (32 degrees or less), you can probably grow this species.  It takes coastal sun quite well but can be grown in part day sun.  This size is too large to easily ship but can be delivered by truck.  For those who need mail order, we also have easy to ship 2 gallon size available as well.

HOWEA FORSTERIANA
THE KENTIA PALM
NICE 25G PLANTS
LARGELY SUN GROWN, GOOD SIZE

Shown here are some 25g plants that are almost instant landscape.  Their height is about 12 to 14 feet in the pots.  Most are single trunk or have a small second plant.  All have been growing in 70% sun or more.  All have nice basal caliper.

This species, native to Lord Howe Island, has long been a favorite for Southern California growers.  It attains a mature height in sun of about 30 feet in 30 years.  Trunks are thin and fruit is red.  Growth rate is slow.  This is a species where buying size pays off.  We also have smaller and larger plants for sale.

Of note, this species makes an excellent interior or patio palm and is often used in hotel lobbies, banks and office buildings.  Smaller 5g plants are easy to ship right to your door.  The majority of these photos were taken yesterday because a customer wanted several plants.

TEN DAY SPECIAL CITRUS POT SIZE

This South African cycad is a dwarf species with a mature caudex size of six inches or less and leaf length of three, perhaps maximum four feet.  It's an understory species, good for filtered light or perhaps more sun along the coast.  It is quite fern like in appearance and cold hardy into the lower 20's F.  It's great as a patio plant or nice in a smaller spot in the garden.  Right on the ocean you can grow in full sun.  Inland areas would do better with strong filtered light or AM sun.  We have almost ten year old citrus pot plants for sale.  Some are near coning size.

PHILODENDRON BIPENNIFOLIUM
THE HORSEHEAD OR FIDDLE LEAF PHILODENDRON
CLIMBING SPECIES WITH UNUSUAL LEAF

It's happened over time but we have a pretty nice selection of rare Philodendrons, both climbing and rosette forms.  Luckily, we are fortunate to be on an exchange program with a well known botanical garden and get really cool aroids from time to time.  They want rare palms and cycads.  In return, we get rare aroids.  So, on any given day, you may drop in and see tropical companion plants that you just can't find elsewhere.

This species is from Brazil.  I am actually showing two different plants that I think are both considered to be bippenifolium.  But, they are a little different.  The third photo shows how juvenile leaves are totally unlike the mature arrowhead shaped leaves.  This is a climbing species that can go well into the canopy from roots in the ground.  It is a shade loving plant that tolerates temperatures down to about a freeze.  Come by and check out the unusual species that we offer.

PACHYPODIUM LAMERI
THE "MADAGASCAR PALM"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE PLANTS

Although not a true palm at all, this succulent from Madagascar has very spiny trunks with un-armed green leaves at the top.  It's trunks can get up to about six inches thick and overall height is usually under ten feet. Sometimes plants will branch, even at the top, and give peculiar shapes overall.  Blossoms do appear and are white in color.  This is a popular garden plant as well as an interior species. Along our coast it demands bright sun.  Cold hardiness appears to be only to about a freeze.

We're offering some very nice about 3 foot tall 5g on special.  The trunks are super spiny.  They are easy to ship.

CYCAS CURRANII
A GORGEOUS CYCAD FROM PALAWAN, PI
BEAUTIFUL, TRUNKING 15G PLANTS

This species is a large sized plant that was originally discovered by an American visiting the Island of Palawan in the Philippines in 1906.  But, soon thereafter, lost it's status as a species until Ken Hill reestablished its species status in 1995.  Trunks attain a height of over thirty feet with a diameter one to two feet.  Leaf length is six to eight feet, Leaflets are about ten inches long, one half inch wide and, as the leaf ages, become somewhat dependent and droopy.  There is little information available on this species.

Shown here are multiple nursery plants including a larger boxed specimen.  The 15g plants are about eight to ten years old and have heights in their pots of about seven feet.  Note how their leaves and the leaves of the box are not droopy as of yet.  I've shown another nursery plant where the leaves, with age, droop.  This is a part day sun species, perhaps tolerating full sun along the coast.  I have seen it tolerate temperatures into the mid-twenties F.  I find it to be prettier than Cycas thouarsii.

ENCEPHALARTOS BUBALINUS
HIGH ELEVATION TANZANIAN CYCAD
A LIMITED NUMBER AVAILABLE

Tanzania is a country north of Mozambique and south of Kenya in Central Africa.  A distant, remote and high elevation locality there is the home for Encephalartos bubalinus.  There is grows at elevations of up to 7000 feet.  With this said, one must realize that this species is not as cold hardy as more southern species in South Africa.  But, it will take temperatures down to the mid twenties F. Colder temperatures may result in leaf damage or defoliation of the crown.  It is a fast growing species that tolerates sun in many areas.

Trunk size gets to about six feet.  Leaves are two to five feet long.  Leaf color is an interesting gray-green and the leaflets are a bit cupped.  Shown here is a citrus pot and 15g plant with several garden specimens.

RHAPIS EXCELSA VARIETY ZUIKONISHIKI
GORGEOUS VARIEGATED RHAPIS
SEVERAL PLANTS AVAILABLE

Two summers ago I was privileged enough to present to you specimens from a vast collection of rare, variegated varieties of Rhapis excelsa.  That were almost entirely Japanese clones of this group of rare plants.

Shown here today is another plant from that collection.  We have others for sale as well.  This plant is in a five gallon container, is about head high and has some new suckers at the base.  The dark green contrasted with the cream and yellow colors is very striking.  This plant is for sale.  Although not inexpensive, these are unbelievably hard to locate for the garden.  If you have interest in this plant or others that we have, please call me or email.

COPERNICIA BAILEYANA
THE BAILEY FAN PALM
THICK TRUNK
STIFF, UPRIGHT NEAR SOLID LEAVES

If you mention this magnificent and large fan palm
to any palm enthusiast, he will immediately praise this gorgeous species.  Native to Cuba, it has a thick and fairly tall trunk with beautiful large, upright leaves.  When I first saw this species in specimen size at Fairchild Botanical Garden in Miami, I was awestruck.  I will share pictures from that trip with you below.  It was a great tragedy when Hurricane Andrew blew down some of these huge relics.  As I recall, staff at the garden were able to salvage some of them by up-righting the trunks and bracing them.

Trunk size on this species is up to about fifty feet with a trunk diameter of two feet.  The trunk is clean and smooth, tan in color.  Leaves are circular, upright, and the crown size is about fifteen feet.  Leaves are green and the large crown is a bit crowded appearing but gorgeous.  The underside of the leaves is slightly glaucous.  Also note how the petioles are very light colored, almost white, with small black armor.  The leaf stems are very attractive.

One seldom sees this species for sale because growing it from seed is painfully slow.  We recently obtained some outdoor grown 5g plants that are showing numerous fan leaves. It has taken seven years to produce this size of plant.  This species likes sun and appears to be cold hardy into the mid, possibly the lower 20's F.  If you like this species, you just have to obtain what's available and be patient.  It's like growing a Jubaea.  It just takes time to get an enormous specimen, but if you give it good culture you should be successful.  Fortunately, growth rate in the ground is faster than in pots.

We have limited numbers of these for sale.  This includes 5g plants as shown and a limited number of bands that are very nice.  If you would like to try one of these really special plants, let us know soon.

THE GENUS BECCARIOPHOENIX
THREE DIFFERENT SPECIES

It was not too long ago when Beccariophoenix was felt to be a monotypic genus with only one species.  Now it is recognized that there are three different species:

Beccariophoenix species "windows", presently called Beccariophoenix fenestralis.
Beccriophoenix madagascarensis,
previously known as "Beccariophoenix no windows"
Beccariophoenix alfredii
, a more recently named species.

All three are single trunk, medium to large plants from Madagascar.  Along the coast, all can take full sun.  Cold tolerance is certainly into the mid-twenties F.  Of the three, Beccariophoenix madagascarensis is probably the easiest to grow.  It is very slow growing.  But, some feel that B. alfredii is equally easy and may have more cold hardiness.  "Windows" is exciting because of the leaf openings, thus the name.  But, over time, these windows are lost and it becomes a pinnate palm.

Shown here are pictures of all three.  We have various sizes for sale from small to large.

ENCEPHALARTOS VILLOSUS
FILTERED LIGHT TOLERANT CYCAD
CONING SIZED, OUT DOOR GROWN SPECIMEN

A few weeks ago I discussed this species at length.  This morning I thought I'd show you a nursery specimen that has been outdoor grown for the past ten years.  This plant is in a 24 inch box container. It has coned and you'll note the old male cones hanging from the caudex.  If they were fresh they would be yellow in color.  It has a caudex size of about 12 inches.  Leaf length is six to eight feet.  Leaflets are narrow and have marginal spines.  This plant demonstrates mature size that you'd get in the garden.  The trunk will not get more vertical height.  From this point, such a plant most likely would sucker.  Leaf length will not get longer.

This South African cycad species is known for tolerating less than full sun.  In fact, if grown in full sun it can get a bit bleached out in color, carrying a lime green color rather than a dark olive green.  In far inland areas, it absolutely can not tolerate full hot sun.   It's cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F. without cold protection.  We have an excellent supply of this species in all sizes.  They can easily be mail ordered right to your door.

ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO
EXOTIC CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON BAND SIZE

Encephalartos kisambo is a fast growing species native to Kenya where it grows at elevations of 3000 feet. It is a medium sized mature plant with trunks to eight feet.  Leaves are green to soapy green in color, stand erect and are six to ten feet long.  Leaflets are 1.5 inches wide, pungently tipped at the end, and spiny along the margins.  This is a fast growing species that can tolerate our coastal sun.  Far inland locations should use part day sun.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties, perhaps a bit lower.  We had no leaf damage at the nursery in 2007 with lows of 25 degrees F.  Shown here are bands that we have on a ten day reduced price.  Also shown are other sizes we have and a domestic specimen.  Note the cone color is yellow.

Of note, these are
strong four year old seedlings, average 16 inches tall in the band size.  They are not wimpy one leaf seedlings.  They are ready to be repotted into a 5g pot.

DIOON MEROLAE
SUPER SLOW GROWING MEXICAN CYCAD
LEAVES GRAY-GREEN
IN A LIFETIME, NEVER VERY BIG

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON PLANTS

This may prove to be the perfect cycad that one can buy when he wants an easy to grow sun species that, in his lifetime, will never get too big.  It's estimated that, in 40 years, you'll not get a trunk more than about 2 feet tall.  The old boxed nursery specimens shown here are "pre-cites" plants that were brought into the US in the early 1970's.  The plant below in La Habra was planted 30 years ago.  The last picture by JO shows a plant in the wild in Mexico that is estimated to be 1000 years old.  So, you get the point - slow growing!

We're offering 1 gallon at a great price.  These are nice plants with some size for the container.  They are 3 to 4 years old.  This species easily takes full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 20 degrees F.

REGULAR PRICE 1 GALLON $65

ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII
EASTER CAPE BLUE CYCAD
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GET ONE ON SALE?
FULL SUN, NEVER VERY BIG

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON SIZE

One of the most popular blue cycads that we sell is this South African species from the Eastern Cape region (toward the ocean).  It is a very slow growing species that, in fifty years, is rarely over a height of five feet tall.  So, like the Dioon above, it'll always stay small and not obstruct a view.  The color is intensely blue.  I tell people it's like the color of a clear blue sky after you've thrown in a tiny bit of fog.  The other thing about this species, compared to E. horridus and trispinosus, is that it's much less spiny and very uniform in shape when mature.  Expect a trunk of no more than three feet and a crown width of no more than six feet.  It loves full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

REGULAR PRICE 1G SIZE $75
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE $50

Remember: You must mention this Blog Only Special for this discount when you buy.  This size is a piece of cake to ship.  We also have available 5g, 15g and boxes but these are not on sale right now.

ENCEPHALARTOS TRANSVENOSUS X WOODII
A HUGE CYCAD CROSSED WITH AN EXTINCT CYCAD
WILL MAKE POWERFUL AND IMPRESSIVE GREEN SPECIMEN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE OF THIS RARE HYBRID

This is one of the most rare and sought after hybrid cycads in the world.  Encephalartos woodii is extinct in the wild.  Only one original male plant is known to exist.  It is located in Durban Botanical Garden in South Africa.  Pups, over the years, have been removed.  Any plant in the world in any location came from this original male plant.  As we have no females, there has been intense work on using woodii pollen on other female Encephalartos cones.  Usually the female cone is Encephalartos natalensis.  But, the prettiest of all the hybrids is with E. transvenosus.  This is the cross I'm offering on sale here.

These are almost impossible to find!

It'll make a large cycad for sure.  I've seen pictures of E. transvenosus with over 20 feet of vertical trunk.  They look like a Canary Island Palm.  This cross will be quick growing, green in color and will have a huge crown of leaves.  Leaflets will be wide and have those noticeable wide barbs characteristic of E. woodii.  It'll take coastal full sun and tolerate down to about 22 degrees F.  The one gallon on special are three to four years old and very nice.

PHOTGRAPHS FROM TWO GARDENS IN FALLBROOK, CA
MEETING OF THE PSSC
MARDH 19, 2016

For about 40 years I've been a loyal supporter of both the International Palm Society and the Palm Society of Southern California.  I've been President of both groups.  Presently I am the San Diego County Chairman for the PSSC.  This means that I set up meetings when they are held in my area.  We have about two meetings a year in the San Diego area and an occasional Banquet Meeting.  Last Saturday I arranged a meeting at the gardens of two individuals who live in Fallbrook, CA.

This smaller community is about 15 miles inland from the ocean.  It is quite hot in the summer and a bit cold during the winter.  Anticipated low temperatures in winter would be, at worst, into the mid 20's F.  One garden is rather young and has a vast array of unusual palm species.  The other garden is more vast and established on 2 acres of rolling hillside terrain.  Photographs are in random order.  About 75 people attended the meeting.  For privacy reasons I am not giving the names of the garden owners nor of those people photographed.  Anyone can join either group.  The photos shown here are in random order with some of the plants identified as shown.

RHOPALOSTYLIS SAPIDA
SHAVING BRUSH PALM
FEATHER DUSTER PALM

We've discussed this great palm previously on this blog, but I wanted to show a few more pictures and remind you that we do have a good selection of this great species for sale.  Rhopaolstylis species are from New Zealand.  R. sapida has the most upright leaves of all the species and gets to about 25 feet height.  Such heights may take several decades.

When I think of this species, I remember mostly the upright leaves and the thick, bulging crown shaft. Rhopalostylis sapida would also be on most people's top twenty list.  It can tolerate full sun if you are within five to eight miles of the ocean in Southern CA.  Most people in other areas give it morning sun or filtered light.  In the garden, getting any significant trunk from a nursery plant may take five to seven years.

Cold tolerance is about 22 or 23 degrees F.  I recently saw some wonderful specimens of this species in the SF Bay area.  The most common mistake is giving it too much sun if you live in a hot area.  Shown here are an assortment of nursery plants we have for sale.  Also shown are photos to demonstrate the two main characteristics of this species: upright leaves and bulging crown shaft.

DIOON MEROLAE
A SMALLER, SLOW GROWING CYCAD
THREE FEET OF TRUNK IN FIFTY YEARS

This is a slow growing New World cycad species that comes from Mexico.  It is very attractive.  One of the things that is particularly nice about this species is that the crown size is compact and not that large.  For this reason, it fits into a small sunny location in the garden where no other plant would work.  Its leaves are a silver-green in color and it holds many  leaves.  An extremely old plant might have a foot or two of trunk.  In the wild there are specimens that are possibly a thousand years old with many meters of trunk, often leaning over toward the ground.  But, from a practical point of view, it is a small plant.  If you grow this species, you'll probably find that it will take fifty years or more to get three feet of trunk.

Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F. and it prefers full sun except for harsh desert climates.  We offer many sizes of this species from seedlings up to trunked plants that are many decades old.
For mail orders, this is a perfect size to ship.  We can easily ship plants up to the 15g size and even boxed specimens if needed.   Some of the nursery plants you see here are extremely old specimens.  The last pictures shows how new leaves are very upright.  If one cuts off older leaves, this species has very little lateral spread and can fit into rather small areas.  I hope that you like this cycad; it's one of my favorites. For upscale landscaping, nothing beats it.

By the way, we have an excellent supply of this species in all sizes. All are shippable right to your door.

PSEUDOPHOENIX SARGENTII
THE CHERRY PALM
WHY IT'S HARD TO FIND A BIG ONE

This great species (and genus) of palm is highly desirable and actually does quite well in Southern California.  It gets to a height of about fifteen feet and is native to the Florida Keys, Cuba, some Caribbean islands and Mexico.  It loves sun and heat.  The trunk is crown shafted, prominently ringed and silver in color.  They want full sun and seem to tolerate temperatures into the twenties F.

The main drawback to this species is that it is unbelievably and unbearably slow growing.  Literally, from a one gallon plant it will take growers here about ten years to see any trunk.  But, in hot and humid areas like southern Florida, it grows at three to four times the speed as here.  So, to get a reasonably sized plant, it almost certainly has to be imported into California.  And, they are not that easy to obtain.  Consequently, it is rarely available except as a seedling.

We are continually trying to bring in better sized plants and once in a while it happens.  If you really want one, just let us know.  They do tend to be pricey.

PTYCHOSPERMA SCHEFFERI
SOLITARY TRUNK OR CAN SUCKER
MEDIUM SIZED
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This palm species is native to New Guinea like many Ptychosperma.  It can be single trunk or a suckering palm - there are two forms.  I am not sure which this one will do.  Trunks are thin and mature height is 20 feet or less.  Leaves are pinnate but leaflets are close set giving the appearance of a solid leaf.  But, as shown here, juvenile foliage can be simple.  I'd recommend filtered light or a bit of sun.  Cold tolerance is into the upper 20's F.

First and most important: What you see with these 15g plants is about what you'll get in the garden. This is because these are mature and flowering plants.  They are 12 years old!  They'll essentially not get much overhead, tolerate sun and are cold hardy to the low 20's or colder.  So, if you need a sun palm that stays small, this one works great.  As shown, leaves are plumose and sort of blue on the underside of the leaflets.  Leaf length is about four feet.

BLUE ENCEPHALARTOS LONGIFOLIUS
GORGEOUS SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
CURVED LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Among staff members at our nursery, this is one of the favorites of all the cycads we grow.  Encephalartos longifolius is native to South Africa.  There are habitat populations with both green and blue leaves.  Both varieties are very desirable.  A nice thing about this species is that it gives a larger and faster growing blue cycad when compared to blue species like Encephalartos lehmannii and horridus.  Leave have a nice curve downwards as shown in some photos here.  It would not be unusual to get a plant with several feet of trunk in two to three decades.  Width of the crown is larger than lehmannii, usually six to seven feet.  E. lehmannii is more petite in comparison.  The bands on this special are about 2.5 years old with three to four leaves.  They can be easily shipped.  This species prefers full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

HOWEA FORSTERIANA
THE KENTIA PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL SMALL BAND SIZE

This single trunk, non-crown shafted pinnate palm is native to Lord Howe Island.  It is known for it's tropical appearance, lush green leaves and slow growth.  It is a great coastal palm for the garden and also an ideal interior palm.  It reaches a mature height of about 35 feet in the garden and tolerates full sun or filtered light along the coast.  Cold tolerance is 25 degrees F.  The bands on special are about 2 years old.  They are easy and affordable to ship in their containers - either one or four.  I'd recommend repotting these this spring into a larger pot.  As a houseplant, because of their slow growth, one can anticipate years of enjoyment before they get too tall.

BISMARCKIA SPECIES MAYOTTE ISLAND
GREEN BISMARCKIA
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

North of Madagascar is a chain of islands called the Comoros Islands.  This is the native habitat for this different species of Bismarckia.  It is different for several reasons.  First, it comes from a much more moist and windy locality than its blue cousin from Madagascar.  In the latter locality it is super hot and dry.  Secondly, the leaf color on this species is blue green, not blue as most of you are used to.  Third, the seeds have a different shape with flanges.  Lastly, there is a lot of red in this plant.  You see it on the spear and petiole.  Sometimes it's a pink color.

Shown here is an older 15g plant of Bismarckia Mayotte Island.  I am putting this size on special.  These plants are quite chunky and sun grown.  They have even seen temperatures of 102 degrees F. in a spring Santa Ana and did ok with that.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.  Limited numbers of this rare palm remain in our inventory.  So, if you are a "Madagascar Nut" and want to try different things, get one while I have them.

JUVENILE RED STEMS, LATER BLACK TRUNKS WITH WHITE CROWN SHAFTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a small to medium sized, suckering palm from Eastern Madagascar.  It gets to a height of about 12 to 15 feet and the leaves are keeled.  When young, juvenile leaf stems and the base of the trunk have a prominent red color.  Later the trunks turn black or near black in color.  At the top of these dark stems are powder white crown shafts.  Shown here is a 5g plant demonstrating this prominent red color.  Other photos show the white crown shafts and dark trunks.  This is a filtered light species with cold tolerance into the upper twenties F. range. Of note, we are pretty well supplied with the band size.  Larger plants as shown in the sixth photo are very limited.

MEDIUM SIZED, VERY GRACEFUL
GORGOUS CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Of the Shaving Brush Palm family, this is the hardest one to find.  And, many think it's the prettiest and most desirable species.  Some consider it to be a variety of R. baueri.  We like to consider it a species.  Native to Raoul Island, an island well off the eastern side of New Zealand, this species has a medium sized trunk and reaches a height of twenty five feet.  The crown shaft is gorgeous but not as swollen as R. sapida.  I have some customers who report the crown shaft being a purple color.  On younger plants, the leaf stems are red colored as shown here.  Cold tolerance is the low 20's F.  It will take coastal sun or consider morning sun or strong filtered light inland.

CHAMAEDOREA HOOPERIANA
SUCKERING, SHADE LOVING
GOOD HOUSEPLANT OR FOR PATIO
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This species was named about a decade ago after a friend of mine and Palm Society member, Luis Hooper.  It is a suckering, medium sized shade palm with thin trunks and prominent rings on the trunk.  Overall height peaks out at about twelve feet.  Clumps do not run.  Leaf color is green and leaf length is four feet.  It is similar to Chamaedorea costaricana but with longer leaves and a fuller appearance overall.

Shown here are almost entirely 15g plants which we're putting on sale.  I've shown one 20 gallon plant to demonstrate a more mature specimen.  I'm also showing some green seeds on one plant.  This species is fast growing and tolerates temperatures down to about 20 degrees F.  Our 15g plants are about 8 feet tall.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX BEATRICEA
RARE SPECIES IN KING PALM FAMILY
SILVER BACK TO LEAVES
SWOLLEN BASE OF TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL BIG ONE GALLON PLANTS

Most people don't know that there are about six or seven different species in the King Palm family.  When customers come in, they are shocked to see that there are choices with this family of Australian, crown shafted palms.  But, there are.

All are single trunk and have crown shafts.  On A. purpurea, the crown shaft is purple.  A. maxima is a bigger species.  Archontophoenix beatricea is known for the silver backs to the leaves, the prominent, "ridge like" step offs of the trunk rings and the definite swelling at the base of the trunk.  Culturally, it's just like the standard King Palm.  The 1 gallon I'm putting on special here are mostly multiples (more than one plant per pot) and of excellent size.  Mail order is a piece of cake.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G $32.50

This price above is a bit more than our band price for the same species yet these are three years old and three times bigger.  Just mention this special to get your discount at the time of purchase.

PRITCHARDIA REMOTA
OVERHEAD TROPICAL FAN PALM
NATIVE TO HAWAII
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON SIZE

This attractive fan palm is native to the islands of Kauai and Nihau in the Hawaiian chain.  It lives at about 500 feet elevation or more in dry forests.  There, some plants are found on dry cliffs.  Maybe because of its natural habitat, it does quite well in Southern California.  Plants get up to about 20 feet height with a narrow trunk for their height.  Leaves are green with some divisions of the leaf segments.  Fruit is medium-large in size, up to 3/4 of an inch.  Culturally, this species takes full sun on the coast and wants morning sun further inland.  Cold tolerance is down to 25 to 27 degrees F.
The plants on sale are one gallon although we may have larger sizes available.

ENCEPHALARTOS SCLAVOI
MEDIUM SIZED GREEN CYCAD
NATIVE TO TANZANIA
MALE BOXED SPECIMEN AVAILABLE

This very rare cycad was just discovered in 1990 and named after a native of France, Jean Pierre Sclavo, who discovered this species.  It only has one habitat: In the Mountains of  the Shuma Magamba Forest Reserve in the northeastern part of Tanzania.   It is critically endangered.  Caudexes get to about three feet tall and leaves are typically six feet long.  Leaflets are either flat or cupped, depending on the particular plant you have.  Here I am first showing you a male specimen with many spent male cones.  When fresh, the cones are yellow in color.  This plant in the orange box has a caudex of 13 inches and one good sized pup.

I am also showing an assortment of sizes we have, although we don't have many of any size.   This is a difficult species to find for sale.  Although I don't have a photo to show it, the leaves sometimes are so cupped that one can lay his 2nd through 5th fingers, one in each leaflet, side by side.  You entire fingers will just rest inside the leaflets.  Leaf color is green.  Growth rate is medium.  This species tolerates coastal sun and is cold hardy down into the low 20's F.  We've never had weather issues with it at our nursery.  Of note, the boxed plant shown in the first 3 rows of pictures was grown from seed and is 20 to 25 years old.

ENCEPHALARTOS TURNERI
VERY RARE SPECIES FROM MOZAMBIQUE
MEDIUM TO LARGE CYCAD
SLOW GROWING
AN ASSORTMENT OF 15G PLANTS

I am showing you here another super rare Central African cycad.  This species was described in 1985 and named after Ian Turner, who've I spoken to over the years by phone.  In habitat it comes from granite and rocky hills at elevations up to about 1100 meters.  Trunks get to about 8 to 10 feet, leaves are f5 to 6 feet long and the leaflets are a bit cupped but not as prominently as E. sclavoi above.  This is a slow growing species.  Shown here are several 15g plants.  We have an extremely limited supply of this species.  It tolerates full or half day sun and is probably cold hardy to 22 to 24 degrees F.  Be aware that some nurseries have sold species as turneri that proved not to be the real thing.

DWARF CYCAS FROM INDIA
UNKNOWN SPECIES
OLD PLANT THAT IS VERY SMALL
ONLY ONE OF THESE

I am showing you a single 15g plant that I got from a private collection I acquired.  I don't know the species name.  But, I do know that the seed for this plant originated in India and that it is ten to twenty years old.  Look at the 6 inch caudex.  It's tiny for this age.  Leaves are four feet long.  Leaf stems are armed.  Leaf color is green.  It's a very attractive cycad.  I can't comment on culture for obvious reasons but it was growing in part sun in the LA area and tolerated easily temperatures in the mid to upper twenties F.  Be aware that, even though the seed "came from India", this does not exclude the seed's native habitat as being from elsewhere.  I was told that it was an easy to grow plant.  It is quite attractive and would fit nicely into the garden floor where a smaller, upright cycad is needed.

CYCAS NEOCALEDONICA
AKA CYCAS SEEMANII
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SPECIMEN!
NO SPINES ANYWHERE!
THE USER FRIENDLY GREEN CYCAD!

Being a friend of the island of New Caledonia, I am going to show you the only cycad native to their country.  It is Cycas neocaledonica.  They are quite proud of it.  But, taxonomists have in more recent years declassified it as a species and now group it with and call it Cycas seemannii.  But, there is one thing that may lead you to consider that it is indeed a species by itself - the total lack of spines, anywhere!  Cycas seemanii has spines.  On the plant from New Caledonia, there is nothing sharp or pointed to poke you.  The leaf stems are without prickles or spines.  Leaves are green and shiny.

Crowns can hold as many as fifty leaves with lengths up to 7 feet.  Trunks are 8 to 12 inches thick at maturity and overall height of centuries old plants can be over 40 feet.  The plant shown here has a trunk diameter of about six inches and a height of about 15 inches.  It's about 12 years old.  Most grow this species is part day sun or strong filtered light although it takes full sun right on the coast.  Cold tolerance is about 22 to 24 degrees F.  Of note, this species is almost impossible to find.  We only have a few plants available.

CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA
ONE OF THE MOST TROPICAL APPEARING CYCADS
SHADE LOVING
MANY SIZES AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON THIS SPECIES!

This species of rare cycad has always been one of my favorites.  This is because it doesn't get overly tall, has lush green leaves and is a great species for the floor of the garden below canopy.  Its leaves hold a more horizontal position when mature.  So, it does need about an eight to ten foot circle of space to have enough room.  But, what a breathtaking plant it becomes!  You can sneak it between the trunks of overhead plants as shown below.  Presented here are several coning sized specimens so you can appreciate the appearance of this New World cycad from Mexico.

Leaflets are typically six to ten inches long, green in color and leaves are about five to six feet long and gently arching.  Leaves stems have small spines.  An identifying characteristic of this genus are the spines on the cones - unique to Ceratozamia (abbreviated "Cz").   A plant many decades old won't have a caudex more than two feet tall so this species will never be over about 8 feet tall maximum and typically not over five feet.  So, it doesn't block a view into the garden.  Young plants (as shown) are hardly noticeable as this species but mature into larger plants as shown.   This species is surprisingly cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.  It is easily being grown in the SF Bay area.

ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS
SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
GREAT SPECIMEN WITH:
BEST COLOR, BEST FORM
PRE-REMOVAL OFFERING OF PUPS

The specimen plant shown here was obtained a year ago from a private collection.  Customers who have visited us absolutely love this plant and many have said it's the best and prettiest E. trispinosus they've ever seen.  It has about eight to ten offsets, sizes four to six inches.  Because of the offsets, it's quite an expensive plant to buy.  This parent's color is a superb blue and the form is just classic.  Several customers told us "if you ever remove those offsets, call me.  I want one"!  Now that it's spring, we're about to remove these pups.  I'm offering them at a great price.  It'll be 33% off what you'd pay once they've rooted and flushed (9 to 12 months).  And, we'll root them for free at our nursery if you wish and ship later.  If interested in getting a pup from this parent plant, just give us a call.  We'd ship the offsets to you for free (unrooted) within a few days after removal.  No international shipment of cycads.  Call: 619 291 4605

FURCREA MACDOUGALII
MEDIUM SIZED GRAY-BLUE PLANT
STIFF, UPRIGHT LEAVES
VERY DROUGHT TOLERANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

For those who have followed this Blog, you'll remember about four to five years ago when we first obtained this desirable, drought tolerant species as small bulbils off a customers plant that flowered.  Now some are finally into 15g size.  They should be good to grow in these pots for a few more years at least.  This species loves sun, never gets over 10 to 15 feet tall and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  It is slow growing.  Mature trunk diameter is about 8 inches.  Leaves are a gray-blue.  These are quite rare and hard to find.  A plant has to die to produce small vegetative bulbils.  This is the only way to produce this plant.  There is no supply of "seeds".  It is native to Mexico.

TRACHYCARPUS TAKIL
POSSIBLY THE MOST COLD HARDY WINDMILL PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This species of Windmill Palm is always sought out by palm enthusiasts, especially those in colder areas.  This is because this species is felt to be the most cold hardy of the genus with reports of it easily tolerating temperatures into the single digits F.  This, of course, varies with the duration or cold and other conditions.  We've been out of this species for about 2 years and now can offer nice 1 gallon plants on special.  We have limited supplies, so don't dally.  It tolerates coastal sun quite well and part sun far inland.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON $32.50

Just remember to mention this Special when you purchase.  I wish to thank Tobias Spanner and Martin Gibbons for their photos.  They not only discovered this species but were also the source of seeds for these plants.

For anyone who's looked for this species lately, you realize it's in very short supply and essentially unavailable in larger sizes.  This is because of a several year shortage of seeds.  We are pleased to presently put nice one gallon plants on special.  All are multiples with at least 3 plants per pot.  This species gets up to about 14 feet height with a green, ringed trunk about 1.5 inches in diameter.  The leaves are plumose or fluffy.  They are quick growing and perfect for narrow planter areas.  It will take full coastal sun.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It can also be used as a houseplant in a bright area.  This one gallon size is a piece of cake to ship and we can easily fit four plants into one box.  We ship plants in their pots with soil.

SABAL BLACKBURNIANA
AKA SABAL DOMINGUENSIS
LARGE TRUNK FAN PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

It's been a while since I've talked about this species or offered in on special.  This large trunked Caribbean fan palm is native to Dominican Republic and Haiti (Hispaniola).  It can reach heights of sixty feet with a two foot thick trunk.  Most authorities feel that S. dominguensis is the same species.  Its leaves are blue green on a rather long petiole.  Leaf size is four to five feet across.  The trunk is light colored, sort of a gray.

Shown here are the band sized plants on special.  We might have some 5g and 15g as well.  All sizes can be shipped.  By the way, as you can see, these band sized plants are not wimpy - they are an equivalent to most nursery's 1g size.

DYPSIS LUTESCENS
THE ARECA PALM
SMALLER & EASY TO SHIP PLANTS AVAILABLE

This very popular suckering species of Dypsis that is native to Madagascar and possibly other nearby locations.  Also known as the "Golden Cane Palm" because of the presence of yellow color in the stems and trunks, it gets to a height of typically fifteen feet in our locality and sometimes a bit more.  But, I've seen specimens from tropical areas that have gotten to 30 feet tall or more.

It has a cold tolerance well into the mid-twenties F and is being grown by many in our So Cal location.  Trunk diameters are usually three to four inches.  Trunks are a silver-green color.  A typical plant will have about four to six stems when mature.  Leaves are pinnate and four to six feet long.  Along the coast, the Areca Palm tolerates full sun but part day sun or strong filtered light will often work as well.

This is one of the best species available to "hide the neighbor or adjacent building" from your view.  The 3g plants shown here are about five feet tall and would be easy to ship anywhere in the U.S.  And, if you live locally and like bigger plants, the last two photos show our currently available 20g size.  They are about 12 feet tall in their pots.

RAVANALA MADAGASCARENSIS
THE TRAVELER PALM
BANANA-LIKE LEAVES
ALL IN ONE PLANE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 7-8 FOOT PLANTS

The Traveler Palm is native to the island of Madagascar.  It actually is not a true palm but is a member of the Strelitziaceae complex.  The banana like leaves are all in one plane.  This is called a "distichous" arrangement of the leaves.  It likes sun or part sun but will not tolerate temperatures below 32 degrees F.  A freeze damages it severely.  People love them because they are a user friendly tree and easy to care for except for their lack of cold tolerance.  They are more attractive than the Giant Bird of Paradise, less invasive and require much less maintenance.  Expect over time to get a trunk about 8 to 12 inches in diameter with soft green leaves.  They can sucker.  Merely remove the suckers to give a single trunk plant.  These plants are also somewhat difficult to find.  We're putting the 10g size on special for ten days.  They are 7 to 8 feet tall in their pots.  But, we also have 2g and 25g plants for sale.  The sale size is in limited supply.

BUTIA X JUBAEA
CHUNKY 15G PLANTS AVAILABLE
SUPER COLD HARDY
THICK "JUBAEA-LIKE" TRUNK
BUT MUCH FASTER GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

I am showing here the limited selection of this very cold hardy hybrid that we have available.  This is Jubaea x Butia capitata with the Jubaea being the seed bearer.  This hybrid gem is more cold hardy than a regular Jubaea chilensis.  These are chunky 15g with trunk diameters of about five to six inches. I'll mention below traits that show you these are this hybrid:

Keeled leaves whereas regular Jubaea are much flatter
Some blue color to the leaves
Abundance of hair/mat at the base of the petioles
The blue color to the leaf stem

Note that the present of barbs on the leaflet tips ban be seen with pure Jubaea or these hybrids.  This is an extremely rare hybrid and hardly ever available in this size.  It is not uncommon for enthusiasts to pay very high prices for rare intergeneric hybrids in small sizes.  Here's a chance to get an eight year old plant on sale.

RHOPALOSTYLIS SAPIDA
THE SHAVING BRUSH PALM
BULGING CROWN SHAFT
MEDIUM MATURE HEIGHT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2G SIZE

This popular single trunk pinnate palm tree comes from various localities in New Zealand.  It is most known for its enlarged crown shaft, upright leaves and medium overall height.  Anticipate a mature height of about 25 feet although sometimes they get a bit taller.  Growth rate in the ground is slow.  It takes about five to eight years from a 5g plant to establish any vertical trunk.  A large specimen can take two decades to produce.  Right on the coast, it'll take full sun.  In most other areas, part day or morning sun is better.  In the desert it needs filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 22 degrees, possible 2 degrees less.

CYCAS DIANNANENSIS
RARE CHINESE CYCAD
LONG, GRACEFUL GREEN LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL CIT POT SIZE

This recently discovered species is native to the Yannan Province in China.  There is lives on steep cliffs at an elevation of almost 4000 feet.  Enthusiasts find this appealing as it implies some degree of cold hardiness.  Trunk size can get up to ten feet.  Leaves are long and upright.  Sometimes leaflets undulate.  There is a prominent petiole and leaf color is green.  So far, in local gardens, this has been an excellent species to grow in part day sun or strong filtered light.  I anticipate a cold hardiness well down into the low 20's F.

DIOON EDULE
COLD HARDY & SMALL CYCAD
LOVES HOT SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G AND CIT POT SIZE

We're offering a good buy on probably the most cold hardy of all cycads. Dioon edule is native to Mexico in very arid, hot and sunny habitats.  It is a semi-dwarf species and never gets over four to five feet tall.  Leaves are about three feet long.  What keeps it small is the fact that the trunk never gets over a foot or two tall in gardens.  So, overall one can almost always look over the top of the plant. This is important where there are view issues in the garden.

Cold tolerance is into the upper teens.  It loves full sun and actually doesn't do well in shade.  Shown here is a citrus pot sized plant with a 3 inch caudex.  We're putting this size plant (3 inch caudex) on sale in 5g and cit pot size.

BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
BLUE MADAGASCAR FAN PALM
NEW ARRIVAL OF LARGE  PLANTS IN TRASH CANS

Yesterday we got in six rather large Bismarckia that are in plastic trash cans.  Some growers prefer trash cans because they give the roots extra depth.  And, they are typically made from high grade materials.  These plants were grown by a friend of mine who passed away last summer.  They were raised in Vista, California.  They show a nice blue color.  Some have been in the containers so long that they are starting to stand up on their toes (roots showing).  This means they are ready for the ground.  One would plant them, of course, with these roots under the soil line.  I'm showing pictures of about three of them here.  They are all a similar size.  This is a full sun species with a cold tolerance into the low 20's F.  Mature height could reach up to 40 feet.  They do excellent inland in hotter, sunny climates but can also be grown well right on the coast.

DWARF AND SEMI-DWARF CYCADS
FOR THE GARDEN FLOOR
AN ASSORTMENT OF IDEAS

A landscape designer on the East Coast has a client who wants to adorn an atrium with small cycads.  They have to be very user friendly, never get overly large, have no spines and be different.  So, we looked around our inventory and came up with some ideas.  Some of these are shown here.  All are cycads.  Zamia furfuracea can get up to six feet but there are ways to restrict its growth.  The Cycas from India is a fifteen year old plant and you can see that it's never gotten big.  So, we figured it would work.  All the others are smaller, dwarf species.  If you want smaller cycad species, we have tons to pick from.  And, they can be easily shipped right to your door.

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM
NEW RED LEAF
MARBLED TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This popular, single trunk, crown shafted palm from New Caledonia is favored because of the newly emerging new red leaf, the attractive overall appearance and the sometimes marbled "watermelon" trunk.  Right on the coast it'll take full sun.  Far inland areas require filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F.  Expect a mature height of about 25 feet in most areas.  It is a slow grower, putting out about two, sometimes three new leaves a year.  Trunk diameter is about 8 inches.  The new red leaf lasts for 2 to 3 weeks.  The bands were putting on special are about 18 months old and have two to three leaves.  They are ready to be repotted into a larger size.

RAVENEA HILDEBRANDTII
DWARF, THIN TRUNK PALM
ONE OF MOST RARE RAVENEA
LIMITED SUPPLY, LARGER PLANTS

A week or two ago we put our band size of this rare palm on special.  I thought I'd show some larger nursery specimens to remind you of this attractive palm that never gets over 8 feet tall.  It has a thin trunk, fine leaflets and will take strong filtered light or, on the coast, full sun.  Shown here are the 15g and 25g sizes.  We have limited numbers.  We have nursery friends who have succeeded in introducing this species to full hot sun up to ten miles inland.  We also have 2g and 5g available.  BTW, most people think this species is native to Madagascar but it's actually from the Comoros Island near Madagascar.

BRAHEA DECUMBENS
DWARF BLUE FAN PALM
SUCKERING, PETITE SIZE
VERY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD AND LARGE 1.5 GALLON SIZE

This Mexican suckering, blue fan palm is actually fairly difficult to find.  It is slow growing.  The plants on special are five to six years old and still in 1.5 gallon (deep pots).  Note that all the leaves are palmate.  A grower must grow through the painfully slow strap leaf stage before he gets these fan leaves.  This shows the age of these plants.  They are ready for the garden except for acclimation to sun.  This is a full sun species, even in the desert.  Cold tolerance is about 16 to 17 degrees.  These plants are a real bargain for those looking for a good buy.  Mature height is six feet maximum.  To get the blue color, plants have to be in outdoors sun and usually in the ground for a year or two.  Don't be fooled that they are green now - they will turn blue.

MATURE BROMELIAD PLANTS

TEN DAY SPECIAL

We've been offering these plants for years and sometimes we put them on sale.  This is a smaller Nerogelia that can take some sun, even full sun along the immediate coast.  They turn from green to bright red in the sun.  They are compact and low.  In three or four years you'll get many heads and they are tightly held together.  The plants we have presently are older and have about fifteen heads.  They are a very full cluster.  They tolerate temperatures into the twenties F.  They add nice color to the garden.

CHAMAEDOREA RADICALIS
TRUNKING FORM
GETS HEIGHT TO EIGHT FEET, COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

Chamaedorea radicalis is the most cold hardy species of the Chamaedorea genus.  It will go down to about 18 degrees.   There is a trunking form of this dwarf palm that forms some trunk and gets to about 8 feet tall.  This form is what's on sale today.  It'd probably prefer strong filtered light or morning sun.  We don't know if it's cold hardiness is identical to the dwarf, trunkless form.  However, it is known for its more narrow leaves.  You'll notice that, just like the dwarf form, it throws blossoms at a younger age.

RHOPALOSTYLIS BAUERI
NORFOLK ISLAND PALM
THIRD TYPE OF RHOPALOSTYLIS ON SALE!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This very attractive, single trunk and crown shafted palm is the third type of Rhopalostylis we've recently put on a ten day special.   Some people think this is the prettiest species of the genus.  Native to Norfolk Island (an Australian territory), it is different than R. Sapida in that the swelling of the crown shaft is less pronounced, the leaves are more reflexed or curved downward, the trunk is a bit more narrow and there's more of a brown color on the leaf stems.  With culture, I'd recommend part day sun or filtered light.  This species does not take the sun as well as R. sapida.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.

LACCOSPADIX AUSTRALASICA
DESIRABLE MOUNTAIN SUCKERING FORM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2G SIZE

Native to Australia, this pinnate palm has three forms.  There are both single trunk and suckering forms.  And, there is one suckering variety that lives at elevations in the mountains.  This latter form - the one that suckers - is the easiest to grow and has the best cold hardiness.  Some call it the "Suckering Kentia Palm".  Of note, the red emergent lower elevation variety is slow growing and doesn't do as well here as the mountain type.  This is a part day sun plant that has cold hardiness into the mid-twenties F.  Some have grown it well in full sun.  On this suckering type, anticipate a mature fruiting height of under fifteen feet.

The 2g plants here are seed grown from seeds off a fruiting tree here in Encinitas.  Although they are slow, after three years I can offer you a plant on its way.  The first garden picture below is of a locally grown specimen of the suckering type.

FURCRAEA MACDOUGALII
UNUSUAL BLUE SUCCULENT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND AND 5 GALLON SIZE

It is actually difficult to find this sun loving blue succulent for sale.  It is native to Mexico and felt to be the tallest Agave type of plant.  It gets to a height of typically under ten feet, has a fairly narrow trunk and fleshy, thick and peculiar shaped blue leaves.  Shown here are our band sized plants and 5g larger plants, both on special.  And, I'm showing a mature garden specimen.  This species likes hot sun and is cold hardy at least to the low 20's F.  BTW, these are second generation plants from 'bulbils" from a customer's mature and fruiting plant.  They are easy to grow but growth rate is rather slow.  Larger plants tend to be quite expensive if you can find them.

THE FLAME THROWING BISMARCKIA!
BISMARCKIA NOBILIS WITH NEW RED LEAF!
UNUSUAL PLANT - NEVER SEEN BEFORE

I wanted to show you something that is quite unusual and you may not have seen.  It's a Bismarckia nobilis that has a red emergent new leaf.  It's done this on the past few leaves.  They come out this red color and then convert to a blue color over time.  This plant is at the nursery in a 25 gallon pot.  Both sides of the new leaf are red.  I'd like to contrast this with the overall "purple color" that Bismarckias sometimes get when they see cold weather.  We have quite a few Bismarckias from Mayotte Island (green form) that show red on the petioles but don't throw a new red leaf.  BTW, this plant is for sale.

DYPSIS LUTESCENS
THE ARECA PALM
A GREAT SPECIES TO "BLOCK THE NEIGHBOR"
GOOD ASSORTMENT OF SIZES AT THE NURSERY
CAN YOU SEE ALMA?

About three times a week a customer calls or comes in with a specific need:  They want to hide their neighbor from seeing into their yard.  Or, they don't want to see their neighbor or his home.  Sometimes such folks just put in a new pool.  Sometimes they don't get along with their neighbor.  And, occasionally they don't want to look at the walls of a big structure next door.

In this locality and by far, the best choice to make a palm barrier is Dypsis lutescens.  They are a suckering species that gets up to a height of about 14 feet.  They take sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is about 24 to 25 degrees F.  Mature cane diameters are about 4 inches.  Because this species has multiple trunks and holds a lot of leaves, one has trouble "seeing through them".

Being somewhat mischievous, Alma yesterday hid behind some plants.  Note on the fourth picture how you can't see her.  If you want a more open look, you can trim out trunks to make the clump more open (last picture).  We have various sizes available for sale.

DIOON MEROLAE
SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED CYCAD
TEN DAY SPECIAL ANY SIZE!

This extremely rare and slow growing cycad comes from southern Mexico, has a smaller crown diameter (more compact) and slowly over many decades will put on vertical trunk.   Leaves are about 4 feet long, leaflets crowded and sometimes over lapping.  The trunk is rarely over 12 inches thick.  Therefore, it doesn't take up much garden space and will most likely be short for ones lifetime.  This is a full sun species in almost all areas and likes heat.  It is cold hardy at least to the low 20's F.

TEN DAY SPECIAL:  20% OFF ANY SIZE, SMALL TO BIG

Of note we have plants from one gallon on up to one hundred year old boxed specimens.  But, remember to mention this Blog Only Special at the time of purchase for your discount.

PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI
THE SOUTH AMERICAN COCONUT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BOX SIZE

This tall South American palm can get up to forty feet tall.  It is so easy to grow that most enthusiast say "no matter what I do, it just grows".  This is a good report.  It does have a husky trunk averaging 18 inches.  Leaves are flat with a bit of silver on the underside.  Trunks end up being clean after a fibrous stage.  Leaflets hang toward the ground a bit.  It tolerates full sun in most localities and has a cold tolerance into the teens.

These boxes are sun grown, about eight to ten feet tall, and husky.  They are ready to be planted.

PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI VAR TORALLYI
BOLIVIAN MOUNTAIN COCONUT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

We wanted to show a more affordable size of the South American Coconut on sale.  As a reminder, this species is native to super high elevation localities in Bolivia.  Some colonies live at elevations reportedly up to 8000 feet.  It is tall with trunks of forty feet.  It loves heat and sun.  The photo below by Gaston Torres shows how gorgeous this palm can look.  In locality it's not called a "coconut" and this is a marketing tool by nurseries.  It seems to have stuck.  But, I suspect, someone picked this trade name because the seeds of this species are very large, about 2 inches long.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's for sure and perhaps the upper teens F.

I'm offering our 5g size on a ten day special.  We have a limited supply of this rare palm.  They are nice size for a 5g plant.  Although not a cheap pal m(seeds cost one to two dollars each), I'm offering an appealing price on this size.

CHAMAEDOREA TEPEJILOTE
SINGLE TRUNK FORMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

This filtered light-loving species is from Mexico and typically has a single trunk.  It has a prominently ringed truck, wide leaflets, about five foot long leaves and a trunk diameter of about 2 inches.  Heights are about fifteen feet on an average.  It does not tolerate full sun without leaf burn.  It is a fast growing species and produces lots of black seeds when you have both sexes.

I am showing here some 15g plants.  Some are single specimens and others have two or more plants in the pot.  Note the green trunks with prominent rings.  Cold tolerance is into the low twenties F. but not into the teens.  On final comment:  Sometimes you may see roots coming off the base of the stem and going into the ground.  These are adventitious roots that tripod from the base of the trunk.  But, most would feel this species does not qualify as a "stilt root" palm.

We're offering the few 15g we have on ten day special.

This highly sought after and collectible species is native to Oaxaca, Mexico.  After several centuries, trunks can get up to 15 feet.  It is known for its prominently keeled dull green leaves, similar to Dioon califanoi.  Close examination will shown small spines on the leaflets.  It is rare to see this species for sale.  The plants on special are pushing 3 years old - not large but super rare.  This is a full sun species except in the desert.  Cold tolerance is down to the low 20's F. or a bit colder.

SABAL MEXICANA
MEDIUM TO TALL FAN PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

At one time this species was much more prevalent in Texas, but in recent times its numbers have dwindled.  Native habitat extends from Texas down through Latin America on both coastal sides of these countries.  In habitat, specimens up to fifty feet have been observed.  Trunks are straight and columnar.  Trunk diameter is typically twelve to eighteen inches.  Most domestic plants are in the twenty to thirty foot range.  Old leaf bases are retained in the upper trunk area but will fall way with age.  The crown is green with a hint of silver and full.  This species is similar to Sabal palmetto but usually bigger with a larger crown of leaves.  Like the Palmetto Palm, it is very cold hardy, perhaps even to ten degrees F.

Shown here are some 5g plants which I'm putting on special.  I've also shown a 15g and some garden plants.  This is a full sun species and a great selection for someone in a colder area.

PHOENIX RUPICOLA
THE CLIFF DATE PALM
LIKE A SOFT AND SMALLER CANARY PALM
FLAT LEAVES, THINNER TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

For all those folks who "have to have a Canary" in their front yard, they might do well to consider this species of Date Palm known as the Cliff Date  This species is native to India and a few surrounding areas.  It only gets to a height of about 20-25 feet after many decades.  Side by side compared to the Phoenix canariensis, it is much smaller.  And, there are other differences  which I've listed below:

It is smaller in mature height and trunk diameter
The trunk is much more narrow, usually under 18 inches
It has a smaller garden "footprint"
In time it doesn't overwhelm the yard

The leaves are softer and shorter - the crown is more petite
The leaves are flat, not plumose at all like some Dates
There are less vicious spines

This is a full sun species that is cold hardy into the upper teens.  Many people feel it's prettier than the Canary Island Palm.  But, it is not as cold hardy as the true Date Palm or Canary.  We've put 5g on special.

NANNORRHOPS ARABICA
THE WHITE NANNORRHOPS
SUCKERING FAN PALM
NEVER TOO BIG
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON

Native to Afghanistan, this near white palm species never gets overly large, perhaps up to eight feet.  It does sucker so a plant can be as wide as it is tall.  The striking thing about this palm is the color.  Note that there are also gray and green forms of this species.  This is the blue, almost white one.  It loves sun and heat.  Cold tolerance is estimated to be into the teens F.  We have put our 1 gallon size on special.  Note that, when this species is small, it is a bit trick to get it established in the ground.  I'd think it best to grow it on to a bigger plant before putting it in the garden.

ENCEPHALARTOS ARENARIUS
RARE BLUE TO GREEN, PRICKLY CYCAD
NURSERY TOUR OF MULTIPLE PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL ANY SIZE/ANY PLANT THIS SPECIES

To me this South African cycad is quite similar to the nearby species, Encephalartos horridus.  Some people call it the "green horridus".  Interestingly, the two natural habitats are close to each other.  But, there are differences in the cone, leaflet shape and usually in the color.  Horridus, when in sun, is almost always blue.  E. arenarius can be anything from green to almost the same blue as horridus.  Encephalartos arenarius is a medium sized cycad with stem heights typically under six feet.  In the U.S., a plant with a three foot caudex is considered "massive".  Leaves are usually three to four feet long.  Leaflets are prominently lobed and prickly as shown here.  Rate of growth is slow to medium.  This is a part day or full sun species with a cold tolerance of 22 degrees F.  In the desert it'll take less sun.  Some have grown it in filtered lights in many areas.

Comments should be made about the color of this species' leaflets.  They can be green, blue or anything in between.  They are always more blue outside in the sun (not in the greenhouse) as the blue is from a blue waxy material that is given off by the leaflets and prevents desiccation on the plant. There is a "True Blue" species which represents a colony with a different cone.  These plants are near impossible to obtain and enthusiasts often argue as to whether they really have one of these or not.  I should also mention that there's variability in the width of the leaflets.  I'm particular fond of clones with super wide leaflets and a dark green color.

I am showing you here quite a few plants.  I have labeled the first picture of that plant followed by more of the same cycad.  I've shown sizes from box down to seedlings.  We have an excellent supply available for sale.

Last spring I showed a triple trunk plant of this species.  It was so popular and sold so quickly that I managed to get one more plant of similar age.  As you can see, the taller crown of blue leaves is overhead in the pot and there are two tall trunks.  It is very cool.  The pot size is 30 gallons.  These doubles and triples sold out last year.  But, I have a limited number of these super old single trunks in 15g size.  This xerophytic species loves sun and takes a fair amount of cold.  I also have young 5g plants for sale as shown in the last photo.  These plants do not require much water for routine maintenance.

The plants shown here are about as large as this species can get.  Many enthusiast have "never seen a plant of this species this big".

The last three photos show 20 year old plants that I'm putting on special.  They have over 2 feet of trunk and are in 15g pot size.  They are huge for their container.  I only have several of these.

AGAVE VILMORINIANA
OCTOPUS AGAVE
ANOTHER WATER CONSERVING PLANT

Below is also a photo of the 15g size which we have or can get for you.

RAVENEA HILDEBRANDTII
SEMI-DWARF PINNATE COMORO ISLAND PALM
NEVER OVER ABOUT TEN FEET TALL

TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This endangered semi-dwarf palm species is from the Comoro Islands, close to Madagascar.  It has a very thin trunk. Although reports of twenty foot palms in habitat exist, in most domestic gardens don't expect anything over ten feet in a lifetime.  Trunk diameter is two to three inches.  Leaf size is three to four feet.  Most have grown this species in part day sun or filtered light.  However, I have one customer growing it well in full sun.  Cold hardiness is in the mid-twenties F.

I have available a limited number of band size plants.  You must appreciate that this species is super rare and rarely offered for sale.  Yes, it costs a bit more than average seedlings, but is well worth it.  These are on about their fourth to fifth leaf.  I also have 5g and 15g available.  The older tree below is from Fairchild Tropical Garden.

RHOPALOSTYLIS CHEESEMANII
NICE 1 GALLON PLANTS
FROM RAOUL ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

Of the Shaving Brush Palm family, this is the hardest one to find.  And, many think it's the prettiest and most desirable species.  Some consider it to be a variety of R. baueri.  We like to consider it a species.  Native to Raoul Island, an island well off the eastern side of New Zealand, this species has a medium sized trunk and reaches a height of twenty five feet.  The crown shaft is gorgeous but not as swollen as R. sapida.  I have some customers who report the crown shaft being a purple color.  Shown here are very nice 1 gallon plants with pinnate leaves.  Expect a mature height in three decades of twenty-five feet.  Cold tolerance is the low 20's F.  It will take coastal sun or consider morning sun or strong filtered light inland.

PRITCHARDIA SPECIES IN BOX
OUTDOOR GROWN ENTIRE LIFE
CLUES TO IDENTIFYING SPECIES
GREAT TROPICAL FAN PALM FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Today we took these pictures of a very choice boxed Pritchardia.  This is a Hawaiian species.  I mention this because the species from Hawaii do much better outdoors here than those from the South Pacific.  The famous South Pacific Pritchardia pacifica, which you see in front of many hotels on the islands, is not a great choice for Southern California (8th photo below) and is not actually a native Hawaiian species.  Grown here, our winter's cold damages it.  But, fortunate for us, there's at least 20 species native to HI and all of them do great along the coast here.  Did you know that Pritchardias are the only truly native palm trees of Hawaii?  All other palms were brought by man or by ocean currents.

Identifying all the species of Pritchardia is an art in itself.  One can key them out with the aid of Don Hodel's recent book publication on the genus.  There are 25 to 30 different species.  Some of the things you look for are listed below.  What you find with this check list helps guide you to the species in front of you:

1.  Height of plant mature
2.   Leaves wavy or flat?
3.   Trunk diameter
4.   Size of the seeds
5.   Back of leaves green or off color (rusty, gray or white)?
6.   Color of leaf stem - tomentum?

One goes through this check list and works themselves hopefully to the species.  It's not easy.  If you know all the Pritchardias cold and can identify any of them, you are well on your way t being a Hawaiian botanist.  BTW, the boxed plant here is 14 years old, grown in the sun and for sale.  We have at least a dozen or two different such plants in boxes or larger pots.  And, we can offer many species in sizes from bands to 25g pots.

MERYTA BALANSAE
A SEMI-DWARF TROPICAL TREE
RARE NEW INTRODUCTION
NATIVE TO NEW CALEDONIA
MALE AND FEMALE FLOWERS

About a decade ago I was not aware of this exotic understory tree.  A friend had received seeds from New Caledonia, germinated and grew the seeds and then offered me some tiny plants.  He had a male and female plant (dioecious species) and thus was able to set seeds.  From the seedlings, I was able to grow them on.  They grew quite rapidly and within about four years were flowering.  This plant likes filtered light and peaks out at about 8 feet height.  It has broad, "Anthurium-looking" leaves as shown here.  The first plant shown here is a male in flower and was picked up by a customer today.  With pollen from this plant we pollinated our sole remaining female today and hopefully will get some seeds.  I've also shown a female blossom below.  Notice it's smaller and less branched.  The male blossoms are more white, fuller and fluffy.  You may also notice pollen dropping from the male blossoms.  If we have any more of this rare species for sale presently, it's just one or two.  I'm not positive as I'm writing this post.

ALOCASIA "CAL - ODORA"
DWARF EVERYGREEN COMPANION PLANT
NEVER OVER 4 TO 5 FEET TALL
NICE 15G AVAILABLE

Some customers complain that the Alocasia calidora get too big.  So, we searched out a unique dwarf hybrid variety of Alocasia that has a similar look but is a dwarf.  Leaves are smaller and plant height with time is typically about 4 feet tall.  Leaves are heart shaped.  Plants sucker freely and are easy to grow.  Just remember to give them adequate water.  Shown here is a nice 15g.  We also have 5g available.  These are easy to ship.  We recommend strong filtered light or part day sun.  Right on the coast they will take full sun.  Cold tolerance is below a freeze, perhaps 25 degrees F.

CHAMAEDOREA ERNESTI-AUGUSTI
VERY ATTRACTIVE DWARF SHADE PALM
TYPICALLY NOT OVER 3 FEET TALL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

Over our 40 year existence, I'd estimate that the nursery has sold several thousand of this very popular dwarf palm.  Typically we recommend putting in a small colony of them.  They look great like this and will get staggered heights.  Most garden plants are not over 3 to 4 feet tall.  But, the last picture shows a few that we've grown for decades and are head height.  Because leaves are at the top, such older plants look best with newer, smaller plants growing from the bottom.  If you have an older plant, put a few small ones at the base.  This species likes shade and has simple, non-divided leaves as shown.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.

DYPSIS NAUSEOSA
AKA DYPSIS HIGHLAND REDNECK
INTERESTING RED CROWN SHAFT PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

Over the many decades we've been growing palms, I made friendship with Clayton York at Utopia Palms in Australia.  We'd chat from time to time about palms.  One of his keen interests was the palms of Madagascar.  About 15 years ago I had heard of the Dypsis species "highland redneck".  I never really knew what it was.  Clayton later described it.  The habitat photos below (c/o Palmpedia) were taken by him.  This species comes from southeastern Madagascar, has a thin trunk and gets to a height of about 40 feet. Note the red and fuzzy crown shaft in the photos.  Habitat elevation is 750 to 1000 feet.  Most are trying it in sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is presently not certain.  This species is super rare and not really seen on the market.

THE ONLY CYCAD FOR FULL DESERT SUN
DROUGHT TOLERANT
THE MOST COLD HARDY CYCAD
JUST IN - CONING SIZED 15G PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE 15G

This remarkable cycad is so useful in the garden.  It is the best species for super intense sun and tolerates temperatures to the mid-teens F.  I was once hired to do a study as to which cycad species is best for a rooftop garden on top of a high rise Las Vegas hotel and casino.  I gathered experience from every desert cycad enthusiast I knew.  The final conclusion was Dioon edule.  Nothing else would take that blasting sun and heat.  Native to Mexico, this species rarely gets over six feet tall.  Growth is very slow.  Cold tolerance is about 15 degrees.  The 15g we just got in were desert grown and are huge.  Many are coning as shown here.  Caudexes average 7 to 8 inches.  Leaves are green to gray green.  These plants are also very drought resistant.  Although not part of our Blowout Sale, I'm offering Blog Readers the ten day special below.

DASYLIRION LONGISSIMUM
THE MEXICAN GRASS PLANT
MEDIUM SIZED UNUSUAL SUN PLANT
DROUGHT TOLERANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE 15G

This interesting drought tolerant plant is native to Mexico and extremely drought tolerant.  In gardens, I've seen a few older plants with a few feet of trunk.  But, this species can actually get a trunk that is six or eight feet tall in fifty or a hundred years.  It loves hot sun.  The crown of needle like leaves is about eight feet across.  Each leaf is about the size of a knitting needle and four to six feet long.  They come to a point but are not very dangerous except perhaps to one's eye.  The plant looks like a "Pom Pom on a Trunk".  Leaf color is blue to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the teens F.  They like hot sun.  Although not part of our Blowout Black Friday Sale, I'm offering a nice discount on these super large 15g specimen plants.  The stems almost fill the pots.

CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA
LUSH & TROPICAL EXOTIC CYCAD
UNDERSTORY - FILTERED LIGHT
GET THEM BEFORE THEY GO INTO BOXES!
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE 15G PLANTS

We recently acquired a few dozen absolutely huge 15 gallon Ceratozamia mexicana.  This is the "prototype" of the Ceratozamias. yet still fairly uncommon at nurseries.  It is native to tropical mountains in eastern Mexico where it grows in humid or arid areas under forest trees.  It is very cold hardy, probably going into the upper teens.  It is easy to grow in the SF Bay area.  It has green leaves that spread horizontally as shown here.  Leaflets are long and come to a point but aren't that sharp.  It is slow growing and a fifty year old plant has a caudex that reaches only about 18 inches height.  It prefers filtered light.

Now, about the plants on sale:  they are about twelve years old or more by estimate.  They have seen our local cold, being outdoor grown in northern SD County under shade cloth.  There are many to choose from.  Caudex size ranges from six to eleven inches.  Almost all have coned, so we could pick a sexed pair if one requests.  All are from the same seed batch.

PANDANUS UTILUS
THE SCREW PINE
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE BAND PLANTS

Pandanus utilus is called the Screw Pine but is not a pine at all.  It's actually a monocot (similar to palms) and native to Madagascar, the Mauritius Islands and some surrounding areas.  It gets it's name by the arrangement of leaves which come off the trunk in spiraling fashion, always the same direction.  Thus, the leaves spin off at different angles in a swirl.  Leaves are rather thin and have spines along the margins.  The trunk on this species is quite amazing.  It forms aerial roots (sausage like) that come to the ground for stability.  Trunks fork and form multiple heads of leaves.  Trunks can also be quite smooth, almost snakeskin-like.  It has large fruit clusters that are bigger than grenades.  Leaf color is green with a sheen of blue.

Overall height is variable, but old specimens can easily be over thirty feet tall with lots of branches.  As I type this I'm looking out my window at a Screw Pine in my garden that is 25 feet tall.  I love this plant.  It takes sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is probably in the mid-twenties F.  We are offering very old bands that are about six years old and a great buy.  They can be easily shipped.

When I first saw one of these I thought "how cute is that?"  And, they are very cute.  They stay small, typically not getting over five to six feet tall mature.  The leaves are upright, green in color, two feet long and reminiscent of a cycad.  The trunk is narrow, typically three to four inches.  And, the crown of leaves is very compact and tidy.  It is very easy to trim and maintain and works very well as a companion plant in the garden floor.  It is native to South Pacific Islands including New Caledonia, Hawaii and Fiji.  It is a filtered light plant and likes plenty of water.

This good looking fan palm comes from southern Mexico as well as various countries in Central America.  There is variability in this species: Some plants are green, others blue.  Some specimens get to twenty feet, others remain shorter. And, some even sucker to make multiple trunks.  But, all are attractive.  Over time, leaf bases fall away to give a smooth trunk.  We're offering our band size on these at a good discount.  Easy to ship.  The one shown is a double, not suckering.  This species likes part sun or full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 20 degrees F.

ENCEPHALARTOS NUBIMONTANUS

TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS CYCAD

A few days ago we got in this very attractive blue Encephalartos nubimontanus.  Native to the Transvaal region of the Republic of South Africa, this species does attain some height with stems up to about six feet or more.  Leaflets are long and narrow without any leaflet side armor and tend to be oriented upward.  It is most similar to E. cupidus but larger in all aspects.  This plant is super rare and a very nice offset from an ideal form parent.  It was removed from the mother plant about 1.5 to 2 years ago and is rooted.  This set of leaves is the first set since removal.  It can be shipped and, in most areas, wants full sun.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F.  I only have this one of this species.

BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
MAJESTIC BLUE FAN PALM
NATIVE TO MADAGASCAR
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

Every serious gardener or palm enthusiast In So Cal has to have at least one of this species in their yard.  In my opinion, this is the best of all the blue fan palms.  Well grown, mature plants are just stunning.  The color is a definite blue.  Stem size averages about 18 to 20 inches (sometimes thicker).  Heights here in CA should get up to over 30 feet with ease and several decades of growth.  The leaf crowns are full.  They love heat and sun.

The only downside is that they only tolerate temperatures down to about 20 degrees F.  If you get colder than this you would defer to the also blue Brahea armata which goes to about 15 degrees F but is also intensely blue in color.  The one gallon Bismarckia on special are in the strap leaf stage but should be produce fan leaves this summer.  BTW, the "purple" color you see in the leaf of the 4th photo is this species natural response to cold and it's presence or absence has nothing to due with eventual color other than the fact that it shows a plant is indeed the blue form of Bismarckia.

We at the nursery are very proud that we offer a good selection of these interesting New World fan palms.  This species is native to the Caribbean region and gets to heights of about 30 feet in many decades.  Leaf color is green to silver-green and trunks are typically six inches thick or a bit more.  This species loves full hot sun and is cold tolerant into the mid-twenties F.  Many are growing it with good success.  In pots, all Coccothrinax are painfully slow.  It's taken us five to six years to produce the 5g plants you see here.  We do have other sizes for sale and multiple other species of this genus.  In the ground they are much faster.

DYPSIS SPECIES
UNKNOWN IDENTITY
TAKE A CHANCE
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE PLANTS

We have a limited selection of unknown seed grown Dypsis from Madagascar that have turned out to be something different than what the seeds were supposed to be.  So, getting one is sort of a gamble.  But, these "unknowns" often turn out to be one of collectors' favorite palms and often no one really ever knows what they are for sure.  Seedsmen, as a rule, want to give a species name to any seeds collected.  But, they can be wrong.  This is probably one of such a case.  I can't quote cultural needs as I really don't know what these are going to turn out to be.  And, it's probably prudent to not "guess" at this point.

ENCEPHALARTOS AEMULANS
MEDIUM SIZED AFRICAN CYCAD
GREEN LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This South African green cycad is known for not being overly large.  A mature plant will typically have a trunk 3 to 4 feet tall (in habitat up to 8 feet) and leaves are about 4 feet long.  For a green Encephalartos, this is a very manageable size.  It's a good growing species that takes full sun along the coast and is cold tolerant to the very low 20's F.  The bands we have on sale are 2 to 3 years old with typically several leaves.

TEN DAY SPECIAL BANDS $35

PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
SUCKERING, MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZE
TEN DAY SPECIAL BIG 15 GALLON PLANTS

This suckering, pinnate and armed palm is native to South Africa.  From a cultural point of view, the most interesting thing about these palms is the diversity of the plants that you'll see in gardens and at nurseries.  Not only does the containerized plant look different from plant to plant, but in the ground there are differences.  Some leaves are very plumose - others are flat.  Some have thicker trunks, others thin.  Some get to ten to fifteen feet tall, others to almost 40 feet.  So, it's hard to know what you'll get when you buy one.  These differences may be due to genetics or long term hybridization of the gene pool.  It's safe to just give it plenty of room to grow.

This species likes full hot sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It is not the most cold hardy of the Date Palm family.  But, it's more cold tolerant than the Pygmy Date for sure.  Leaf stems have sharp spines, so be careful when handling or planting/pruning.  We just got in some very large 15g that are 7 to 8 feet tall in their pots.  And, we're putting them on sale.  BTW, in case you didn't know, it's quite hard to find nice 15 gallon size of this species.  These could be shipped but would require a huge box!

DYPSIS PLUMOSA
THIN TRUNK
MEDIUM SIZE
WHITE CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL TRIPLE 5G SIZE

This single trunk, crown shafted palm is native to Madagascar.  When it was first discovered, it went by various names including the incorrect name of "Dypsis ambositrae" and "Dypsis Fakey".  the latter name was because most enthusiasts realized it, for sure, was not an ambositrae.  But, the latter name was how the seeds were labeled on arrival here.  It tolerates coastal sun and has a plumose leaf.  Cold tolerance appears to be down to the low to mid twenties F.

But, from a nurseryman's point of view, it's a peculiar bird.  When you have seedlings, they are these skinny, sort of tall plants.  Then, as a 5g they are the same.  And, after four years in a 15g pot, they are still so skinny trunked.  Years ago I thought this species could end up being an anemic loser.  But, we've found in the ground and with age, they fatten up.  Mature trunks are 4 to 6 inches thick - still thin, but not abnormally so.  With this in mind, we are offering some multiples in 5g.  Thin trunk plants look better as multiples.  These are about 5 feet tall and can be shipped.

BURRETIOKENTIA KOGHIENSIS
RARE NEW CALEDONIAN PALM
WHITE CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 25G PLANTS

Back in the year 2000, I was the President of the International Palm Society.  One of my goals at the time was to break the monotony of Biennial meetings always being held in the United States.  I found them to be repetitious and sort of boring.  Certainly, no one at the time would have called them exciting meetings.   With this in mind, I set up the 1998 Biennial in Thailand at Nong Nook Gardens.  That was a first.  And, to outdo that meeting, I arranged with the Palm Society of New Caledonia to have to 2000 Biennial in their country.  The palms of New Caledonia are some of the most exciting and pretties palms of the world.

This gave Jesse and I a great opportunity to see the New Caledonian palms in the wild.  About 45 minutes out of Noumea (the capitol) is Mount Koghi.  This is the home habitat for this species.  It has a thin to medium trunk, a white crown shaft and gets to about 25 feet tall.  It's very beautiful and does great in Southern California.  Most grow it in part day sun.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F. (sort of like a King Palm with tolerance of cold).  Shown here is a plant we germinated 10 years ago.  It went from a band to a 5g, then to a 15g and now, after some time in a 25g pot, it is quite nice as you see.  You'll not see locally grown plants of this species around at all.  And, never on sale.

CHAMAEDOREA SEIFRIZII
THE CLASSIC BAMBOO PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BIG 5G

This New World suckering shade palm has pinnate leaves and never gets much above 8 to 9 feet.  This is the reason it's so popular.  It's not my favorite suckering Chamaedorea, but it does fit inside the home of the average house without hitting the ceiling.  Outdoors, it wants filtered light and is cold hard into the mid, perhaps lower 20's F.  The 5g on sale here are oversize, about head height or more.

CHAMAEDOREA COSTARICANA
SUCKERING, MEDIUM SIZED BAMBOO PALM
NICE 15G PLANTS ON TEN DAY SPECIAL

This clustering, thin trunked palm tree is native to Costa Rica and surrounding Central American countries.  It has stems that are 1 to 1.5 inches thick, green in color, with overall height of twelve to sixteen feet.  References will say this species peaks out at ten feet.  This is not true; it is taller.  Leaves are about three feet long and green in color.  Flowers are orange and seeds are black.  Shown here is a nice 15g plant.  It is a few feet overhead in the pot.  This is the size I'm putting on special.

Culturally, most consider this a filtered light plant.  But, I've had some customers who swear it takes full coastal sun.  I don't grow them in sun at the nursery.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.

REGULAR PRICE 15G SIZE $200

ALLAGOPTERA ARENARIA
THE SEASHORE PALM
DWARF PALM NOT OVER SIX FEET
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

We just got in a few more of this very sought after palm that is known for its short stature and very plumose (fluffy) leaves.  It is native to the Atlantic coast of Brazil where it literally lives in sand dunes.  It is a single trunk plant but can divide above the ground.  Mature, it is as wide as it is tall.  It demands full coastal sun.  In the desert, probably part day sun is best.  The plants you see here are mature.  Some have flowered and made seeds. They are about 12 years old.  You can't find a "bigger" nursery 15g plant for sale around.  They are ready to be planted.  Container size is 15 gallon.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F. or upper teens.  These plants can be shipped.  Although not part of our Black Friday Sale, I am putting these on a ten day special for Blog Readers.

YUCCA ROSTRATA
SUPER BLUE FOLIAGE
SEMI-DWARF SUN PLANT
TOLERATES VERY COLD WEATHER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

This small to medium sized, drought tolerant plant is native to the southern U.S. border and down into Mexico.  It is usually a single trunk mature plant but can fork above the ground.  Most notable is the silver-blue foliage as shown here.  It is very slow growing.  Over time it forms a trunk about eight or ten inches thick.  Foliage is about 2 feet long and not "pokey" or sharp.  It demands full sun and is cold hardy at least to the lower teens F.  Gardeners like this species because it's not very big and gives nice color to a sunny garden.  Although not part of our Blowout Sale, I'm offering these at a discount to Blog Readers.

LUSH & EXOTIC LANDSCAPE IDEAS
A PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR
EMPHASIS ON THE PLANTS

After blogging here for five years, I've learned that, more than anything, people enjoy seeing pictures.  So, I thought I'd just post a bunch of pictures of tropical and lush landscape with emphasis on the plants of course.  I am particularly showing lots of companion types of plant material and understory plantings.  This is meant to be no more than a pictorial presentation.  One wants surprises and interesting plant material around ever turn or curve of the garden pathway.  It makes the garden so much more fun for you (and others).  Hopefully you'll get some ideas here.  All one needs is a place to find the plant material and a little guidance.  We feel we can help on both counts.

SHIPPING LARGER NUMBERS OF BIG PLANTS BY INDEPENDENT TRUCKERS
SECURING PLANTS ON PALLETS

I just want to remind readers that it's very easy for us to ship larger plants by bunching them onto a pallet.  We frame out the pallet and shrink wrap it.  The advantage for you is that we can ship larger plants and this technique is so much more affordable that usual shippers like Fed Express or UPS.  But, you've got to fill the pallet to get the full benefit and savings.  For some, this is the perfect way to add to their garden.  We ship to all states in the country.

PREPARING A PLANT FOR SHIPPING
THIS TIME A BLACK
TI PLANT
ALMA SHOWS YOU HOW WE DO IT

I want to show you how we prepare a plant for mail order/shipping.  Immediately to the right are three black Ti plants.  Our customer chose the biggest one, the plant on the left.  (note that there is a flower at the top of the plant).  Also note that this plant was a bit of a challenge.  One trunk goes laterally.  It would not bend upwards without damage.  You'd think that this meant we'd have to use a huge box to ship it upright.  We found a cheaper solution with less shipping charges for the customer.  This was to add a block of wood at the base, correcting the orientation of that longer trunk so it pointed straight up.

So, we attached that block, snow balled paper to the soil and applied a strong stake (1 x 2 lumber) to protect the plant during transport.  This means the plant won't slide on itself, damaging the canes, if Fed Express turns it upside down.  Alma then careful lifts the prepared plant and gently slides it into the pre-cut and measured box.  The stake goes to about an inch below the top of the box.  After inside the box, the top is securely taped.  (the bottom end is prepared before loading).  The last picture shows a plant in a box that is ready for the invoice and Ag permits on the outside of the box.  Inside we put a full complement of needed permits along with the original invoice.  Within a hour it's off to Fed Express for shipping.  There are few nurseries that take this much effort to prepare and ship plants.  But, we do.  We continually get feedback about how "prefect the plant was on arrival!"

A LOOK AT THE FRONT OF THE NURSERY
PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR
ALMA AND THE PLANTS

Yesterday was a drizzling day, sort of gray and gloomy.  Regardless, we were quite busy with customers at the nursery.  Somehow Alma found the time to take pictures of the front entrance to our nursery.  These pictures show the unique combination of palms, cycads and succulents that we're offering.  You can see how nicely they all blend together.  I hope the gorgeous blue Encephalartos show well in these pictures.  They are huge and unique.

PLANT BROKER VERSUS NURSERYMAN
WHAT SOME SELLERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW
HOW TO TELL WHICH IS WHICH

There's a dirty little secret among people who sell plants.  That secret is that some people don't "grow plants" but merely buy someone else's plants, try to sell them to you and make it appear that they propagate plants.  And, unfortunately, they are often brokering plants grown elsewhere, in more tropical areas that won't do as well as locally grown plants.  Why would this be a secret?  Because they don't want you to go looking for their sources.  Otherwise, you wouldn't buy from them.

How do you tell who is who?  How do you know if a "nursery" is growing their own plant material or just brokering?  It's quite simple.  Look inside the nursery for evidence of germination.  Look for small plants in addition to large ones.  Look for plants of the same species in many sizes.  If you see none of these things, perhaps just one size of a given plant, you're almost guaranteed that that person is just selling other nursery's material.

Yes, Jungle Music does bring in plants from other sources.  But, it's most often young seedlings when we do.  And we then grow them up for years to the large palms your know us for.  I've found that I can't germinate everything.  We need some help.  So, we've had decades of history with reliable germinators who sometimes germinate seeds for us.  And, when we do find larger and super desirable things, we may bring them in.  But, 99% of our material we've grown ourselves.  Just looking at the our nursery, you realize this.  We've got a quarter million plants.

So, don't get fooled.  Deal with someone who really knows the plants and has been growing them himself.  The pictures here show you some of the two miles of tables we put our plants on.  You'll see plants of all sizes - from new seedlings to 5g, 15g and larger plants.  I've shown a lot of seedlings here and flats of small plants.  I thought you'd like to know this.

BRAHEA CLARA
BLUE SINGLE TRUNK MEXICAN PALM
SUPER COLD HARDY

This palm is quite similar to the more commonn Brahea armata.   It loves sun, takes cold to 15 degrees and is blue in color.  It gets to a height of no more than 20 feet.  Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan Palm, it has longer petioles and is faster growing.  Another curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.  Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more like a bad set of shark's teeth as shown here.

EXCELLENT COLD HARDY SMALLER PALM

This suckering species of fan palm develops a blue color with age and sun.  Shown is a 5g.  We never can keep them in stock to get them to 15g.  They love hot sun, get to a height of no more than six feet and sucker.  this is an ideal palm where views are a concern.  They are very slow growing.

BUTIA X SYAGRUS
THE MULE PALM
HYBRID THAT LOOKS LIKE NEITHER PARENT

This surprisingly very cold hardy palm is being grown in areas that routinely see bad weather.  When Queen Palms die in Tucson, AZ, this one survives.  It gets to 25 feet and loves hot sun.  Some say that, when mature, they look a little bit like a Coconut.  It's also a very good growing hybrid with lots of vigor.  It likes sun and is cold hardy to about 16 or 17 degrees.

COPERNICIA ALBA
TALL THIN TRUNK
SINGLE STEM FAN PALM

Copernicia is a rare genus of fan palms mostly native to Caribbean Islands such as Cuba.  This species has a thin trunk and gets over 40 feet tall.  For an exotic genus, it's surprisingly cold hardy perhaps into the upper teens F.  It loves sun and heat.

JUBAEA CHILENSIS
CHILEAN WINE PALM
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM

This thick trunked pinnate palm is slow growing but manages to get a trunk fatter than any other palm.  Native to Chile, it can reach a height of 40 feet and trunk diameter of 4 feet.  It loves hot sun and is cold hardy to 16 degrees.  The 15g plant shown here is 10 years old.  This is why this species is more costly than other palms.  The trunk is also smooth as shown here with no attached leaf bases.

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS

THE CHINESE FAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM SIZE

This Asian species never really gets to a height much above 25 feet.  It's so slow growing that anything over ten feet seems to take an eternity.  It has a twelve inch thick trunk and flat green leaves.  In most areas it takes full sun but also tolerates filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 18 degrees F.

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
SUPER COLD HARDY
SMALL, CUTE LEAVES

This Asian species of Windmill Palm is quite difficult to find.  That's because it's very slow growing.  The 15g plant shown here is about 8 years old.  They typically don't get tall.  In a few decades, a ten foot palm could be expected.  They love full sun and are cold hardy to 15 degrees F.  Leaves are quite small and flat as shown here.

BEAUTIFUL HYBRID PALM YET COLD HARDY

We don't know as of yet the cold hardiness of this very handsome hybrid palm developed in Thailand.  It's quite a new thing.  It is prettier than both parents.  Anticipated height is 30 feet, so it's shorter than a standard Queen Palm.  It likes full sun and appears to be cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.

TRITHRINAX ACANTHICOMA
AKA TRITHRINAX BRASILIENSIS
MEDIUM HEIGHT, SPINEY TRUNK

This South American, single trunk fan palm is unlike some of its suckering kin below.  This plant gets to a height of about 20 feet and has a random pattern of long spines protruding from the trunk.  Leaves are green, medium sized.  It likes sun and is cold hardy well into the upper teens F.  The trunk is indeed different - liked by some, hated by others.

COLEUS, LOTS OF COLORS
LARGE, FULL PLANTS

Coleus is a type of plant that will get quite big and full.  They can grow in partial sun but filtered light enhances their colors.  They need a bit of trimming of ends of stems to keep them from getting too large.   These plants are already two by two feet in size.  Blossoms should be pinched off as well.  Colors are stunning.  They are a bit cold sensitive but with some protection, many folks get them to winter over.  They make a stunning plant for a patio container.

FICUS DAMMAROPSIS
LARGE 5G PLANTS
VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND

This unique species of tropical tree is known for it's huge leaves that are pleated, reach up to three feet long and have red veins.  It is one of the most collectible trees in the world.  It is very difficult to propagate and rarely seen for sale.  The plants we have now came from a special propagating company and will be gone quickly.  And, you can save.  Google this plant, look at it and you'll "have to have one".  I've got one 15 feet tall in my garden. It's survived San Diego weather for three decades.  Although not inexpensive, it's a "must have" species.

NEW SPECIES FOR US
SUPER ATTRACTIVE AND SHORT

This is a new Ginger variety for us.  We've not had it before.  I've been told it makes a smaller plant for strong filtered light and has upright blossoms.  The variegated pattern is quite attractive.  Otherwise, I can't say a lot about it.  Limited availability.

LIGULARIA TUSSILANGINEA
LILY-LIKE, FLAT GREEN LEAVES
YELLOW BLOSSOMS IN FALL
TAKES SUN - LIKES WATER

This is an interesting plant we propagate ourselves from seeds of existing plants.  They form small clusters of shiny green leaf plants that don't get over 18 inches.  Flowers come in the fall are yellow, daisy-like and medium sized.  This species enjoys water and will droop over with too little water.  Then, when given water, they bounce right back.  It's a good "indicator plant" for how well you are watering the garden.  They'll take sun in many areas or part day sun.  Available 1g, 2g and some 5g plants.

ALOCASIA CAL-ODORA
THE MINIATURE ELEPHANT EAR
NEVER OVER ABOUT THREE FEET TALL

Customers often shy away from the Elephant Earr Alocasiaa because of their potential size.  There is even one species that gets super tall and almost takes over the garden.  But, what I'm showing you here is a true dwarf with plants that never get much above your knees.  The leaves are a foot wide and color is green.  They are an ideal plant where you want a low profile companion plant to cover the garden floor.

This species can take full coastal sun or part day sun and filtered light in all areas.  They do like and respond to water.  We sell a ton of these but do have limited supplies.  When people see how they perform they often come back for more.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS
NURSERY CREDIT FOR USED PLASTIC POTS

I like to remind plant enthusiasts to recycle their plastic containers.  We will take them and give you a credit toward any purchase at the nursery.  Or, if you just don't know what to do with them and are conservative minded, drop them off at our nursery location.  We'll put them to good use.  We've been doing this for decades and think it's the right thing to do for the environment.  We are especially looking for larger pots, 15g and bigger.  We also really appreciate 7g pots and citrus pots.

So, don't give them to the garbage man for your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!!

THIS PALM, CYCAD AND TROPICAL PLANT BLOG
WHY DID I CREATE IT?
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
HOW DO I WRITE MY POSTS AND SELECT TOPICS?

PRESENTLY GOING ON FOUR YEARS, THOUSANDS OF POSTS.

For those of you who know our Website, you are aware of the fact that this site offers a tremendous amount of information on the palms, cycads and an assortment of tropical plants.  I started this website over twenty years ago.  It was one of the first websites in the world on palms and cycads.  And, it is presently one of the largest for sure.  Yes, we are a nursery and, to survive and support this Site, we must sell our plants.  But, as I looked at internet sites over time, I found it quite disappointing that, with most plant sites, it is apparent that the only motive of sites was to sell their products.  Little information was shared.  But, in my opinion, the point of the Internet was to share information.   So, our website from its inception had the mission of offering free information for the reader to learn about the plants, their culture and educate them on species they could grow.  To accomplish this I've written and posted about a hundred articles on plants and species.

Doing this was made easier by the fact that I've been studying, growing and learning about palms and cycads now for almost forty years.  I've been involved with and learned from many plant organizations and am the past President of the International Palm Society and the Palm Society of Southern California.  And, I've traveled the world multiple times studying plants in gardens and habitats.  This allowed me to accumulate literally tens of thousands of photographs over the years.  And, as Jungle Music began in 1977, I've had decades of experience with growing the plants and learning their culture.  The nursery has also been a great source of feedback from customers.  I've learned the successes and losses they've had and how any given species grew for them.  The latter has been in invaluable part of gaining knowledge about the plants.  One can read forever, but actually growing, observing and caring for the plants is, in my opinion, the best source of learning.

Plant reference books tend to be very scientific.  They are written typically by taxonomists who use terms and phrases that few can understand.  Some are not this way, but the majority are.  And, practical cultural information is rarely present, especially not for different growing areas.  People want to know "Can I grow it?".  My goal at this Site has been to share information that people could understand and use, especially in the selection of the right species for their gardens.

Years ago I spent large amounts of time making contributions to discussion sites and groups on the Internet.  But, it became apparent that all this information is lost within a month or two.  Old posts on servers are literally just deleted.  And, they tend to be a difficult way to gather good information.  And, discussion groups are notorious for not being available to search engines.  So, I abandoned discussion groups and started this Blog four years ago with the goal of making a resource point for plant information that would persist over time.  Presently there are thousands of posts on the threads of this Blog.  My next project is to make information from the years of this Blog to be presented in an easily searchable format, organized by species, groups or cultural areas.  Hopefully this will be available in the next twelve months.

With a daily schedule like a farmer, I tend to get up very early in the morning.  It's quiet before the sun comes up and there's few distractions.  And, as I sit down at my computer, I have no idea what I'm going to write about any given morning nor what I will put on one of our Ten Day Specials.  I just think of a subject and do it right then and there.  I might have an idea from the day before or remember a confusion people have on a subject that I'd like to clarify.  I learn at the nursery the most common things that people don't understand.   I am convinced that, if one read this blog on a repetitive basis for a year or so, that person would become very knowledgeable and a lot more comfortable with growing rare species..

Outside my office window I can see into my garden for inspiration.  The garden at dawn is just magical.  And, this is what I've done this morning.  Every time I post on this Blog, it takes me several hours.  I try to add interesting anecdotes, stories and cultural tips.  Hopefully I've got some good and recent photographs the reader hasn't seen.  I try to explain terms that might stump the reader.  Some "experts" may not agree with everything I put here, but posts are my viewpoint on the subject.  I mostly utilize my own photos, but will credit those from friends or acquaintances when used.   I invite anyone with pictures or information about cool species to contact me.  I may add it to this Blog.  And, I always give credit for any donated photographs.

Hopefully, as I travel, visit more gardens and faraway parts of the world, I can share more with you over time.  It does amaze me when I come across a species or topic that I've never discussed on the Blog.  But, it happens all the time.  My promise to you is I will continue this Blog for as long as I can and continually try to improve it and make it interesting.  Thank you for reading..

Note to readers: On review, this is a long winded post.  If you read to this point, as a reward to you for your perseverance, email me and I'll send you a 15% off coupon.

PLANTS OUTDOORS AT THE NURSERY

About half of our nursery plants are grown outdoors at the nursery.  The other half are inside our greenhouses.  We have twelve greenhouses.  In general, the outdoor plants are acclimated better to our weather or sun and tend to be larger and more mature in size.

For those of you who haven't visited us, our street front is about three hundred feet long in a residential neighborhood.  We chose such a neighborhood on purpose because our city is known for its nurseries and green attitude.  Nurseries are nestled among homes.  It's quite inviting to visit nurseries here.  We have several acres overall dedicated to the plants.  This includes shaded or shade cloth areas, hot sun areas, a display garden area and a large propagation and growing grounds.  We also host an educational center and lecture hall.  We are just minutes off the major freeway (Fwy 5) in our town of Encinitas, California.  So, it's an easy trip.  Please drop in a visit us.
