BRAHEA DECUMBENS
DWARF, BLUE, SUCKERING SUN PALM

TEN DAY SPECIAL 1.5 GALLON SIZE

This easy to grow Mexican fan palm hardly ever gets over five feet tall.  In the sun, it gets super blue, suckers and doesn't have a large footprint in the garden.  Surprisingly, when young, plants are green in color.  But, outdoors in the sun, I guarantee that they'll turn blue.  Leaves are small compared to other Braheas.  It is rare and, unfortunately, very slow growing.  I am showing here our 1.5 gallon plants which are about 4 years old.  They are quite old for their containers.  This species will take sun in all areas and does not like shade.  It does well in desert areas.  Cold tolerance is about 17 to 18 degrees.  We're offering both sizes on a ten day special.  And, for this slow growing species, they are oversized in their pots.  After a little acclimation, put them right into your garden!

REGLAR PRICE 1.5 GALLON $50
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $39

Easy to ship. But, you must mention this Blog Only Special when purchasing to get these prices.

COCCOTHRINAX ARGENTATA
MEDIUM SIZED FAN PALM

SMALL TRUNK - SILVER BACK T LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This smaller and very cute fan palm is native to areas of Florida, Mexico and into the Caribbean.  It has a blue green leaf color with more prominent silver on the underside of the leaf.  Mature height is rarely to twenty feet.  Leaves are about three to four feet across and prominently divided into segments.  It likes heat and sun.  It might also do well in desert areas.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  We have available 5g and some 15g plants.  It is ideal for people who want shorter but attractive sun tolerant palms.  But, particularly in pots, it is slow growing.  We're putting bands on sale today but do have 5 and 15 gallon available.

DYPSIS LEPTOCHEILOS
THE TEDDY BEAR PALM

EVERYONE LOVES THIS PALM
ONE OF THE BEST MADAGASCAR PALMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2G SIZE

The Teddy Bear Palm has become super popular because it grows well in Southern California, has a rusty colored, fuzzy crown shaft, has a silver, ringed trunk and doesn't get too tall.  For most enthusiasts, it's among the "top ten" Madagascar palms.  Mature height is about 25 feet.  Right on the coast it does well with full sun.  Cold hardiness is about 25 degrees F.  Growth rate is medium.  One can grow it in part day sun as well.  The average enthusiast, once he sees a mature plant, just "has to have one".   Expect a mature height in California of about 25 feet or a bit more.  Trunk diameter is usually about eight inches.  The crown shaft is the most prominent trait - fuzzy, rusty red and quite touchable.  The latter trait is why it's called the "Teddy Bear Palm".

TRACHYCARPUS TAKIL
POSSIBLY THE MOST COLD HARDY WINDMILL PALM

TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This species of Windmill Palm is always sought out by palm enthusiasts, especially those in colder areas.  This is because this species is felt to be the most cold hardy of the genus with reports of it easily tolerating temperatures into the single digits F.  This, of course, varies with the duration or cold and other conditions.  We've been out of this species for about 2 years and now can offer nice 1 gallon plants on special.  We have limited supplies, so don't dally.  It tolerates coastal sun quite well and part sun far inland.

REGULAR PRCIE 1 GALLON $45
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON $35

Just remember to mention this Special when you purchase.  I wish to thank Tobias Spanner and Martin Gibbons for their photos.  They not only discovered this species but were also the source of seeds for these plants.

CHAMAEDOREA MICROSPADIX
NEW SEEDLINGS AVAILABLE

TEN DAY SPECIAL SEEDLINGS

This shade loving species is sought after for several reasons:
It doesn't get too tall, rarely over 8 feet tall
It suckers and forms a nice clump
It has good cold tolerance into the upper teens F.
Leaves are sometimes iridescent and a blue color on their under side

It is a type of Bamboo Palm.  Trunks are very thin, sometimes just a quarter of an inch.  Leaves are short, usually 2 to 3 feet.

We are presently offering seedlings on special.

CHAMAEDOREA STOLINIFERA
A SEMI-DWARF, SUCKERING SHADE PALM

PROPAGATED USUALLY ONLY BY DIVISIONS
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON PLANTS

I recently discussed this suckering, semi-dwarf simple leaf understory palm.  Native to Mexico, it suckers, rarely gets over six feet tall, has short petioles and has small, entire leaves as shown here.   The leaf surface is a bit wavy and sometimes a bit of a  mottled green color.  And, the new stems emerging do so in a totally different fashion.  It is called "stolinifera" because it forms new "stolons".  These are vegetative stems that emerge from the base of an older trunk.  They then shoot laterally, sometimes below the soil's surface, to reappear a short distance from the mother stem.  They look like "snakes" going over the soil surface, sometimes diving into the dirt to root.  Often they'll wildly shoot out of the pot, then turn upwards to form a new vertical stem.  This ability to shoot out new stolons often creates a very wide mature clump.

Stems are a quarter inch thick.  This is a filtered light species with a cold hardiness into the low 20's F.  This species is native to mountainous areas in Mexico at about 2500 feet.  It's a great garden species.  People are easily growing it in San Francisco and cooler areas.  We usually propagate vegetatively as hardly ever are seeds available.  We do have several mother plants for this purpose (shown below).  We have very limited numbers of one gallon plants I'm putting on special.  This size is shown in the first two rows of pictures below.  I highly recommend this species.

RARE, CLIMBING PHILODENDRON SPECIES
VERY UNUSUAL LEAF - GOOD GROWER

TEN DAY SPECIAL - ONLY ONE SIZE AVAILABLE

Shown in the first 3 pictures is a rare and un-described species of Philodendron.  Many plants of this genus are climbers.  This means that they will literally climb up a fence, pole or trunk of another tree.  Such is the case with the species shown here.  Please note its interesting leaf shape.  We got stock of this species from a large botanical garden in LA where we have an exchange program.  It comes from a plant in the wild.  For sure, you'll not find this species at any local nursery.  This plant has seen a freeze at our nursery and is a good grower.  The last two pictures show epiphytic Philodendron on trunks of larger trees with one close-up photo of the attaching roots.  Of note, we have a lot of Philodendron that you'll find nowhere else and many are climbers.  This is super fun in the garden to watch them grow up a palm trunk.

CHAMAEDOREA PLUMOSA
THE BABY QUEEN PALM

SINGLE THIN TRUNK
LOOK BEST IN GROUPS
TEN DAY SPECIAL GOOD SIZED 1 GALLON SIZE

For anyone who's looked for this species lately, you realize it's in very short supply and essentially unavailable in larger sizes.  This is because of a several year shortage of seeds.  We are pleased to presently put nice one gallon plants on special.  All are multiples with at least 3 plants per pot.  This species gets up to about 14 feet height with a green, ringed trunk about 1.5 inches in diameter.  The leaves are plumose or fluffy.  They are quick growing and perfect for narrow planter areas.  It will take full coastal sun.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It can also be used as a houseplant in a bright area.  This one gallon size is a piece of cake to ship and we can easily fit four plants into one box.  We ship plants in their pots with soil.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX "TERACARPA"
THE BEST KING PALM EVER!

SO, WHAT IS IT?
ARE THEY EVER ON SALE?
YES, 10 DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Archontophoenix teracarpa is a fictitious name given to an unknown species/type of King Palm that I have in my garden and no one can identify.  I've been collecting seeds from it for quite a few years and offering it for sale.  Everyone who gets one agrees - "It's the best King Palm ever!"  It got the name from the Latin "Large body", which it has.  So, what are the differences that makes teracarpa more ideal?

It is faster growing
It gets taller than the regular King Palm - actually towers above them
It tolerates full sun better
It doesn't brown tip in full sun
It has a blue crown shaft
It has a super thick trunk
Sometimes, as shown here, its new leaf is a red-green color

EUTERPE EDULIS
THIN TRUNK, COLORED CROWN SHAFT

TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON SIZE

This attractive and very thin trunk, crown shafted palm tree is native to Brazil and other South American countries.  It is a very elegant single trunk, crown hafted palm that grows well in many areas of Southern California.  Anticipate a height of twenty to twenty-five feet.  Crown shaft color ranges from green to a brown-purple.  Fruits are purple.  Trunk diameter is four inches.  Leaves are green with somewhat droopy leaflets.  This is a very attractive rare palm that, if given the right conditions, grows fairly rapidly.  It is also hard to find available.  Cold tolerance is about 25 to 27 degrees F.  We've been out of this species for a few months.  But, I recently acquired some one gallons shown below.  I'm putting them on special.  Also, I'm showing in the last row below, photos of presently unavailable 15 and 20 g plants from the nursery.

RAVENEA GLAUCA
GREAT PLANT - MEDIUM SIZED
THIN TRUNK

NOT TOO MANY LEFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G

Many folks like plants that don't have a super thick trunk and don't get too tall.  Such is the case with this species.  Ravenea glauca is native to Madagascar, has a thin six inch trunk and gets to a height of about 25 feet.  One of my favorite habitat photos is shown below with the red cliffs in the background.  How gorgeous is this species?  It is a full sun plant in most areas and cold hardy to the upper teens to low 20's F.

The 15g plants shown here are six feet or a bit more in height.  They'd be a challenge to mail order.  But, we do have smaller sizes for sale that are easy to ship.  Growth rate is pretty good.  It is a very durable plant and easy to grow.  New growers should consider this species.

CHAMAEDOREA HOOPERIANA
BAMBOO PALM THAT IS TALL AND FULL

GORGEOUS 15G PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

It's not that uncommon that I'll talk about various types of Bamboo Palms.  Three decades ago this species (Chamaedorea hooperiana) would have probably been called a variety of Chamaedorea costaricana.  But, in his book on Chamaedorea, Don Hodel described this species named after friend and palm enthusiast Louis Hooper.  So, it now enjoys its own status as a species.  And, it deserved species status because it is quite different than Chamaedorea costaricana.  This species is native to high elevation rain forest in the Veracruz area of Mexico.  It grows at up to 5000 feet elevation in habitat.

It reaches an overall height of twelve to fourteen feet.  It is also quite wide at maturity with many canes.  These canes will sometimes lean outwards, making the clump wider.  Trunks are about one inch thick.  Compared to
Chamaedorea costaricana, this species is more full and wide.  It's hard to "see through" this species whereas you'd have a better chance of seeing through a costaricana.  Also, the leaves of costaricana are shorter.  Hooperiana leaves are four feet long or more.

Shown here is a 15 gallon sized plant that is about ten feet tall.  This species likes good draining soil, adequate water, filtered light and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  We have various smaller sizes as well - and maybe a few 25 gallons.

REGULAR PRICE 15G $225
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G $185

TRACHYCARPUS FORTUNEI
THE WINDMILL PALM
ONE OF THE MOST COLD HARDY PALMS

CHUNKY 15G ON TEN DAY SPECIAL

Trachyarpus fortunei is the most commonly available and commonly grown of the Windmill Palms.  It is of Chinese origin .  It is referred to as the Chinese Windmill Palm, the Windmill Palm, or the Chusan Palm.  Note how the term "Windmill Palm" can refer to this particular species or to the genus as a whole.   It is not uncommon to see it growing in colder areas of the United States, southern Europe, the Mediterranean and southern portions of Australia and Africa.

Most specimens one will see are in the height range of ten to twenty feet.  However, the oldest of trees may reach forty feet height.  The actual trunk diameter is typically six to ten inches.  The leaves are typically about three feet in diameter and have variable division of the segments. Leaves are green on the upper side and below, but it is not uncommon for one can see a bit of blue discoloration to the underside of the leaf.  Distal leaf segments can flex downward toward the ground.  Shown here are two nicely size nursery plants that are in 15g size and are representative this size size at the nursery.

BLACK MONDO GRASS

GREAT GROUND COVER

TYPES OF OPHIOPOGON
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G PLANTS

I have customers in all the time who are looking for an attractive yet small type of ground cover other than Ice Plant.  We carry several types of plants that would fit this bill.  But, one of the "Cadillacs" of ground covers is the Mondo Grass.  I am featuring here the Black Mondo Grass although we also have silver and the more commonly seen green form.  The Black Mondo Grass only gets about twelve inches tall and does not run.  It forms a well defined and small clump.  It's perfect along a walkway.  It wants to get some sun and is fairly cold hardy.  Full sun along the coast is ideal.  A mature clump will only get about 18 inches wide.  Note that these put out small purple flowers.  The specials are for the 1 gallon sizes.  On the garden photos below you'll note all are the green variety.  This is because this is the most common type available.  Black is quite hard to find.  Silver is near impossible to find.  The last photo shows a large form of the green variety.

DASYLIRION LONGISSIMUM
THE MEXICAN GRASS PLANT
MEDIUM SIZED UNUSUAL SUN PLANT

DROUGHT TOLERANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE 15G

This interesting drought tolerant plant is native to Mexico and extremely drought tolerant.  In gardens, I've seen a few older plants with a few feet of trunk.  But, this species can actually get a trunk that is six or eight feet tall in fifty or a hundred years.  It loves hot sun.  The crown of needle like leaves is about eight feet across.  Each leaf is about the size of a knitting needle and four to six feet long.  They come to a point but are not very dangerous except perhaps to one's eye.  The plant looks like a "Pom Pom on a Trunk".  Leaf color is blue to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the teens F.  They like hot sun.  I'm offering a nice discount on these super large 15g specimen plants.  The stems almost fill the pots.

CLINOSTIGMA SAVORYANUM
THE PACIFIC BEAUTY PALM
NEWLY POTTED ONE GALLON PLANTS AVAILABLE
SECOND GENERATION FROM LOCAL TREE!

TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE PLANTS

This is a gorgeous and exotic crown shafted palm that many in our area can grow.  We have been out of them for over a year and just received seedlings from a locally and domestically grown specimen that flowered and set viable seeds.  Everyone loves this palm.  It is single trunk, crown-shafted species comes from Bonin Island near Japan.  It has been proven possible to grow this species in warmer areas of Southern California.  It is very exotic appearing with a prominent green crown shaft.  Interestingly, there are several species of Clinostigma that can be grown here.  But the savoryana is the best and easiest for us.  It can potentially get to a height of 30 feet or more and prefers a sunny location.  Cold tolerance is down to bout a freeze.

Clinostigma is a very exotic pinnate palm and would be one of the more exotic and unusual of palm types possible in this area.  Shown here are one gallon pots that were recently potted up.  Yes, they are small but (to grower's delight) the seeds came from a seeding tree in the Orange County area.  Also shown are a variety of sizes of domestic plants in Southern California.

This is another post to remind readers that we still offer a limited supply of the highly coveted variegated Rhapis excelsa.  Known as the "Gems of the Orient", these striking plants typically have yellow or white variegation on green leaves.  Most plants at mature size are three to six feet.  There are many exotic varieties - most popular in Japan where affluent collectors compete to obtain the most striking plants.  Propagation is by divisions only.  As these plants come only from divisions, we tend to have only large plants for sale.  Earlier this month I showed a shippable plant we had.  Here is another one.  It's in a 3 gallon pot.  The variegation consists of very narrow bands of yellow on green.  They are sort of hard to see here.  On any given leaflets there are lots of these narrow, subtle stripes.  Contact us if you are interested in getting one.  BTW, these are never inexpensive plants.  And, they are all different.  The variegation seems to be different from leaf to leaf on all varieties.

ENCEPHALARTOS AEMULANS
GREEN, RARE CYCAD FROM SOUTH AFRICA
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED IN THE WILD
TEN DAY SPECIAL VERY LARGE BAND PLANTS

This species of green South African cycad is a medium sized mature plant with trunks up to about five feet.  They are un-branched and have green leaves that are about five feet long.  The leaves are straight and leaflets point toward the end of the leaf.  In the wild stands in the Natal area of RSA, there are only about a hundred plants remaining.  Shown here in the first row of photos are 4 to 5 year old band plants - very large for their container.  The second row of photos show a huge boxed specimen at our nursery.  The last row shows domestic plants and a close up of the leaflets.

We're putting older band seedlings on sale.  They'd be easy to mail order.  In our area, this is a full sun plant with a cold hardiness into the low 20's F.

REGULAR PRICE THESE BANDS $65
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE BANDS $50

Remember, mention this Special when you order.  We, of course, have other sizes of this species for sale.

CHAMAEDOREA QUETZALTECA
RARE SUCKERING PINNATE PALM
THIN TRUNKS, GREEN LEAVES
ONLY A FEW AVAILABLE

This rare type of Bamboo Palm is native to southern Mexico and regions down into Central America.  It grows in high elevations and is a fairly easy grow in our area.  It likes filtered light.  Expect a mature height over ten feet tall.  It is probably most closely related to Chamaedorea costaricana and has narrow trunks and shiny green leaves.  We have a few 15g available.  It is extremely difficult to find this species.  I have no photos available of mature plants.

BRAHEA CLARA
A BLUE FAN PALM FROM BAJA, MEXICO
I'LL TALK ABOUT SOME OF ITS DIFFERENCES COMPARED TO BRAHEA ARMATA
A FEW 15G PLANTS AVAILABLE

Brahea clara is a blue fan palm from Baja California.  It is most closely related to Brahea armata but there are many distinct differences between the two.  Brahea clara has longer leafstems.  It is quicker growing.  And, the armor on the stems is very peculiar and irregular as shown here.  It is very blue and loves full sun and heat.  Many argue that Brahea clara is, at best, a variety of B. armata.  Others say it's a separate species.  Another difference is that Brahea clara petioles are more of a green color compared to the blue of armata.    Also note how the Brahea clara leaf stems are clean and smooth.  There are none of the dorsal petiole hairs you see on the Brahea armata.  Rather, clara are smooth and shiny.

We have a few 15g plants available and are ready for planting in sun in your garden.  We have no smaller sizes right now.

LIVISTONA NITIDA
TALL PALM WITH THINNER TRUNK
NATIVE TO QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
FAIRLY QUICK GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This palm species is a fan palm that is native to Queensland.  We've found it to be quick growing.  It'll attain a mature height of 60 feet or more.  Trunk diameter is about 12 to 18 inches.  Its leaf stems are armed as shown here.  It prefers full sun, even in desert areas.  I've read reports of it tolerating snow in Georgia.  I'd estimate cold tolerance to be at least 20 degrees F.  The 5g on Special are nice size and ready for repot or planting in the garden.  When mature, the leaflets droop downwards.  This species was previously known as "Carnavon Gorge".  Habitat photo c/o M.C. in Australia.

DIOON EDULE
A SMALLER CYCAD
SUPER COLD HARDY
TOLERATES SUN, EVEN IN DESERT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BLUE-GREEN 1G PLANTS

Dioon edule is a remarkable cycad species for multiple reasons.  First, it takes hot blazing sun and heat.  It can be grown in desert areas in full sun.  Most cycads can't do this.  Secondly, it is cold hardy - probably one of the best cycads species for cold.  It'll go into the teens F. for sure.  Finally, it never gets very big.  A five foot tall plant with a foot or two of caudex is about maximum for this species.  But, it will often cluster and form a clump of plants.  The special today is on very nice 1g plants.  Note they are not new seedlings but have some size.  And, they have a nice blue-green color.  These are simple to mail order.

BRAHEA ELEGANS
THE FRANCESHI PALM
MEDIUM SIZE MATURE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

You don't see this species offered that often.  It is native to the Pacific coastal mountains from Central Mexico down to Guatemala.  It has circular leaves that tend to be flat and a very glossy green on the upper side.  The underside of the leaves can be a bit silver.  Trunk diameter is a pleasant 12 inches and specimens can reach 30 feet of height after many decades.

Regarding culture, it is not quite as cold hardy as other Brahea species like armata, clara and decumbens.  I'd suspect it may go into the upper teens F.  It is more tolerant of moisture and can be grown in filtered light if there's good drainage.  In the latter conditions the leaves are large, flat and shiny.  They sort of look like a Licuala leaf.

We just got in a limited number of nice 1g plants.  They are easy to ship.

DYPSIS LUCUBENSIS
TALL, THIN TRUNKED PINNATE PALM
FLUFFY, PLUMOSE LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This species of palm is typically single trunk but there are suckering forms.  It is native to island of Nossi-Be off the coast of Madagascar.  It can reach heights of over thirty feet.  It has leaves arranged in three ranks - "tristichous".   Trunk diameter is about 8 inches and the crown shaft is a rusty-brown color and not elongated.  It is a difficult species to find nowadays.  I'd recommend growing it in full sun along the coast.  I'd estimate cold hardiness to be in the mid-twenties F.  We have large one gallons on special.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX MAXIMA
LARGEST OF THE KING PALMS
BAND SIZE WITH TWO OR THREE PLANTS/POT
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

By popular demand I have put this great palm on special.  This is the largest of the King Palm family.  It got its name "maxima" by the flower size, but most have found it to be an aggressive grower, have a larger trunk and get taller than the other species of King Palms.  It does have silver on the underside of the leaves.  The crown shaft is sort of a yellow, sometimes blue color.  It is a quick growing pinnate palm native to Australia.  It's rare to see them available and also hard to find good photos of this species.  I wish to than L.N. below for his picture of a mature tree.  The plants I'm putting on special are band size.  Most are multiples.  In the last row of photos, I'm showing two 15 gallon plants, but they are not on special right now.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 10G/SQUAT 15G PLANTS

This is an attractive, suckering, thin trunked palm species is from Madagascar or surrounding areas.  The number one reason people buy this species is "to hide something".  By this, I mean they want to hide a neighbor, an ugly next door structure, an unsightly fence, the side of a garage, etc.  This is an ideal species for this purpose as it suckers and is fairly dense.  You can't see through it well.  Mature height averages 14 feet in California.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  Trunk diameter is about 3 inches.  It'll take full sun along the coast and far inland areas must give it only morning or filtered sun.  I am offering nice squat 10 & 15g plants on special for ten days.  They are about 8 feet tall in their pots.  We do have limited numbers of larger and smaller sizes available.

TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This interesting palm, known as the Dwarf Chusan Palm, does not have a well known natural habitat.  Some think it may have originated with a dwarf cultivar of T. fortunei.  It is very slow growing with a hairy trunk.  Leaves mature are about two feet across, stiff and flat and do not flex down at the ends.  A decades old plant may have a trunk under ten feet tall.  It wants full sun and may be equally as cold hardy (down to 15 degree F. or colder) as the common Windmill Palm.  The bands on special are three years old and already showing their fan leaves.

MODIFIED SPINES ON TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This single trunk fan palm is native to Southern Mexico and parts of Central America.  It can get up to a height of 25 feet but most garden specimens are under 15 feet.  Two things are quite noteworthy:  First, the undersides of the leaves are a silver-white.  A picture below of a nursery plant shows this.  Secondly, the trunk is narrow and covered with "modified" spines.  They are not real sharp and are not true spines.  The dorsal side of the leaves is green.  This palm likes strong filtered light and right on the coast may take part day sun.  Cold tolerance is estimated to be in the high 20's F.  Growth rate is medium.  The last photo by Tobias Spanner shows a near mature tree.  You have to have an overhead crown of leaves to really see the silver color.

PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
SUCKERING, SOMETIMES LARGER PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This species of suckering Date Palm is typically felt to be native to South Africa although other populations have been reported in the Middle East, Madagascar and some tropical islands.  It is an armed palm with sharp spines on its leaf stems.  It loves full sun and heat.  Mature heights are variable.  Some plants only get to about fifteen feet.  But, I've seen plants with a mature height and many stems up to 35 feet.  Trunks average about six inches thick and are covered with fiber.  It is a dioecious palm where both sexes are needed to set fruit.  The bands on sale here are very large for their container as you can see.  These can be easily shipped.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.

PHOENIX THEOPHRASTII
PERHAPS THE MOST COLD HARDY PHOENIX
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

I have previously discussed this extremely cold hardy species of Phoenix.  This species is suckering (typically) and is from the island of Crete.  It is a bristly palm with lots of spines.  It has a pronounced yellow color in its petioles.  But, most important to people in cold areas, it is possibly the most cold hardy of all the Phoenix, even better than the Canary Palm.  It is somewhat smaller than Phoenix dactylifera and the leaves are green in color.  Shown here are views of 15g plants.  We presently have 5g and 7g for sale.  It likes sun and cold tolerance should be about 15 degrees F.  The last photo shows a single trunk plant (RPS website), perhaps pruned this way or perhaps naturally single trunk.  You can see that it is a medium sized palm species.  These plants are easy to ship by mail order.

Spanish Moss is actually a small, wispy type of Bromeliad - a flowering type of plant.  The natural habitat for this plant ranges from the southern U.S. down through Mexico into Central and South America.  It is even found in Australia.  It is an epiphytic plant that hangs onto almost anything it can find.  It loves to hang from tree branches or trunks.  It requires very little water and will grow without any applied fertilizer.  We are selling small clumps we've attached to wood.  Or, we can ship them without the wood.  You  can hang them anywhere you want.  Just spray them once in a while with water.  These clumps are easy to ship.

THE CURLY OR SENTRY PALM
CURVED/REFLEXED LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This more rare type of Kentia Palm is from Lord Howe Island, the home also to the more common Howea forsteriana.  But, the Belmore Palm grows at a higher mountain elevation than the forsteriana.  Therefore, it possesses a bit more sturdiness and cold tolerance.  The hallmark of this species is the curve seen in the leaves.  They curve downwards toward the ground.  Thus we get the name "Curly" Palm.  Some call it a type of "umbrella" palm as well.  Expect a height up to 35 feet or a bit more with a six to eight inch trunk.  The 5g on special here are quite nice and 5 years old.  Note:  Photos below, first row 5g size on sale.  Second row 15g not on sale right now.  Last row are garden specimens.

ASPARAGUS DENSIFLORUS "MYER"
NON-RUNNING, ATTRACTIVE, NEVER TALL
JUST IN - ONE GALLON SIZE
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON PLANTS

This evergreen fern is native to South Africa and only gets about one to two feet tall and three to four feet wide.  It doesn't run or take over the garden - it stays as a smaller clump.  It has tight, fluffy green leaves as shown here.  Fruit/berries are red when blooming.  When I planted out my garden 40 years ago, I didn't know the difference.  I planted Asparagus Fern sprengeri.  What a mistake!  It takes over.  But, the one shown here doesn't run or monopolize an area.  It remains a nice little clump.  It's really cute, cold hardy to 20 degrees F. and easy to grow.  It likes filtered light or sun along the coast and wants average water.  The last photo taken by KGIII.

CHAMAEDOREA TEPEJILOTE
SINGLE TRUNK, TALL
SHADE-LOVING PINNATE PALM
DARK GREEN RINGED TRUNK
OFTEN GROWN AS A "MULTIPLE"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This single trunk pinnate palm is native to areas extending from southern Mexico down to Columbia.  They are often grown for food as the male blossoms are cooked and eaten as a delicacy.  This species doesn't take sun here - it'll burn.  But, in shade it thrives in temperatures down to the mid-twenties F.  It is quick growing and has a rather thick, prominently ringed dark green trunk.  Flowers are quite prominent and, if you have several plants closely situated, the chances are you'll obtain fruit without even trying.  The last photo shows a flower with green fruit.  This species can also be grown inside the home as long as the air is not too hot and dry.  I personally like the looks of a collection of several plants grown together.  Over time, as they age and get overhead, there will be some "stair-stepping" of the crowns and this is quite attractive.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F.  It needs filtered light, even when tall.  We have singles and some multiples of our 5g that are on sale.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII
A BLUE SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
NO SPINES ON THE LEAFLETS
TEN DAY SPECIAL:  BAND SIZE & ONE GALLON

This is a popular blue cycad from the Eastern Cape area of South Africa.  I say this because some people don't like spines and prickles.  The leaflets of this species are narrow with only a point at the end.  The leaves and crown are very neat and uniform.  The nearest species to this one is Encephalartos princeps.  Trunks can get to five feet, but one with two to three feet of trunk is very old.  Leaves average about four feet long and are strongly curled.  Sometimes they'll almost do a 180 or more degree re-curve.  Leaf color is intensely blue like E. horridus.  But, you'll only see this color with full, hot sun.  In shade or inside a greenhouse they are often green.  Cold hardiness is about 21 to 22 degrees F.  In the desert only give it a few hours sun.  Next to Encephalartos horridus, this is the second most popular cycad we grow.

Shown below in the first row is our band size.  The second row shows the 1g size.
The third row are larger nursery plants and the last row shows garden specimens.

HOW DOES ONE TELL IF HIS PALM IS DEAD?
IS MY PALM STILL GROWING?
HOW FAST IS IT GROWING?
MARK THE NEW SPEAR!

It is surprising that many palm enthusiasts don't know how to tell if their palm is alive or dead after some type of insult such as severe cold.  It's simple to determine if the plant is alive and growing.  Mark the central newest spear side by side while marking an adjacent fully extended leaf.  See the photo.  Then watch for the two moving apart.  The line of the new spear moves upward while the adjacent mark on the full size leaf stays the same.  Look at the difference movement of the new spear over time.  You can also tell how fast it's growing.  During the growing season (when warm), most palms will show a quarter of an inch or more of vertical new spear growth per day.  To confirm a serious problem, you'd note that there is no movement of the spear over several weeks.  But, if the new leaf spear is green, don't give up.  Just give it an extended period of time and watch for movement.   The photo shown here is of a marked spear on a  15 gallon Dypsis decaryi.  Note the horizontal black permanent marker marks. The new spear is on the left in the photo.

BURRETIOKENTIA VIEILLARDII
THE TIGER PALM - STRIPED CROWN SHAFT
ANOTHER SPECIES OF THIS GREAT GENUS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE!

This species of Burretiokentia comes from the highest elevation of the three species of this genus from New Caledonia.  It grows at altitudes of almost 4000 feet.  It has a thin trunk of about six inches and can get to sixty feet tall.  It has a prominently bulging crown shaft that is known for it's diagonally dark markings.  Thus, the name "Tiger Palm".  The crown shaft is reddish-brown in color and has prominent striations as shown below.  Younger trunks are green with rings unless exposed to sun.

The crown of this species is full and round with upright and arching leaves.  Leaf length is about eight feet, leaflet length is three feet and the leaves are flat in cross section.  Some would argue that this species is the prettiest of all Burretiokentia.  Culture is similar to the other Burretiokentia, but I'd give it more shade when young and let it "grow into the sun" rather than starting it in direct sunlight.  As with all New Caledonian species, ample water is crucial.  Under-watered plants do not do well.  Although limited, we do offer various sizes for sale.  I've shown not only nursery plants here but also some mature specimens.  We're putting the 15g on Special

ARENGA ENGLERI
SUCKERING COLD HARDY PALM FROM JAPAN AND TAIWAN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This suckering Asian palm rarely gets over ten feet tall and has medium width leaflets that are jagged at their apical ends.  The underside of the leaflets are silver.  But, from afar, it looks like a green palm.  It is thick with stems because it suckers heavily and cannot be seen through.  Therefore, it's a good species to block visibility.  Growth rate is slow.  Cold tolerance is into the upper teens F.  Flowers are very fragrant but seeds contain a substance which makes the skin itch.

SOME UNUSUAL COLD HARDY PALMS AND CYCADS
AN ASSORTMENT OF IDEAS - A "SAMPLER"
ALL THESE SPECIES TOLERATE 22 DEGREES F. OR LESS
SOME DOWN TO 15 DEGREES!

Whether you live in CA, TX or the Gulf States, there are a lot of unusual palms and cycads that you can grow that are very cold tolerant species.  Over our history, we have helped many hundreds of customers from cold areas pick out great but different species that have proven for them to be good growers.  You don't have to only accept the common species available in your area.  Below is a sampler in random order to give you some ideas.  We certainly have dozens more species that would probably do well for you.

All the plants shown here will tolerate temperatures down to about 22 degrees or lower.  Some will even go down to the mid-teens F.  The Encephalartos need cold protection below 20 degrees.  Plants shown here are mostly 15 gallon size with a few 5 gallons.

We have all these species available for sale and
can work out the most affordable shipping method to get plants right to your door.  If you live in Sacramento, the SF Bay area, Houston, northern Florida or other colder areas, you may be able to grow all or most of these plants.  We also have smaller sizes available that we ship through Federal Express.  Contact us and we'll work out the best species for your area.  Remember, this is only a "sampler" and that we have many more desirable cold hardy species than shown here.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX TUCKERI
TALLER KING PALM TYPE
FAST GROWING
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This tall, single trunk form of the King Palm is native to northern Australia in the Queensland district.  There is lives in moist areas, often along rivers.  It can reach heights up to 60 feet in habitat and has a prominent green crown shaft.  The fruits are large for a King Palm species.  The trunk is not very thick.  It's usually under 12 inches thick.  Growth rate is fast.  For best appearance, give it part day sun if you can.  Cold tolerance is the mid-twenties F. but not colder.

LACCOSPADIX AUSTRALASICA
SUCKERING MOUNTAIN FORM
BEST GROWING SPECIES OF THE GENUS
NO NEW RED LEAF - SUCKERS OVER TIME
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G AND 5G

When one considers the species Laccospadix australasica, he has to realize that there are different forms depending on native habitat/localities.  There are also single trunk and suckering forms.  The one for sale here is the mountain suckering form.  I feel it's the best subspecies one can purchase.   It doesn't throw the new red leaf.  The latter form is slow growing and doesn't perform as well.  The seeds for these plants today came from a local flowering tree here in Encinitas.  This variety has thinner leaves that are dull green in color, trunks about four to five inches thick and reaches a height of 12 feet.  It sort of looks like a suckering Kentia Palm.  I'd recommend morning sun, strong filtered light or perhaps several hours of daily sun.  Cold tolerance is into the twenties F.

AGAVE ATTENUATA BLUE
NICE 15 GALLONS WITH TRUNK
A TRUE "DR. SEUSS" PLANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE
ONLY SEVERAL LEFT IN STOCK

For quite a few years we've been offering this blue variety of Agave attenuata in larger sizes.  We are finally down to just several plants and I'm putting them on special.  They have formed this narrow, three to four inch diameter trunk with a huge head of stiff blue-green leaves without a sharp point at the end.  The tips of the leaves are pliable and safe to the touch.  These plants are quite unique and attractive.  Obviously, they are quite old.  I've found that, if you remove the basal suckers, they seem not to go into blossom.  When this species blossoms, that blossoming trunk will die.  So, if you get some of these, trim off the suckers.  They take full coastal sun but in inland areas prefer part day sun.

REGULAR PRICE THESE OLD 15G $275
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE $175

Mention this Blog Only Special for this price.  I can mail order these but, because of size and weight, it'd be pricey.

RHOPALOSTYLIS OCEANA
AKA RHOPALOSTYLIS SP. CHATHAM ISLANDS
A RHOPALOSTYLIS SAPIDA ON STEROIDS!
SUPER BULGING CROWN SHAFT, GOOD GROWER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This often hard to find species of crown shafted palm is from the Chatham or Pitt Islands, many hundreds of miles southeast of New Zealand.  It is known as probably the most southern growing of any palm species.  Compared to the other forms of Rhopalostylis sapida, it is much more robust, perhaps better at handling full sun and has a massively swollen crown shaft. I've been told plants can reach forty feet of height.  Also, this species or variety is a quicker grower than other forms.  Although some consider it a "species", presently you should properly refer to it as a form of Rhopalostylis sapida, either "oceana" or "Chatham Island".

Along the coast and a bit inland, it tolerates full sun quite well.  Inland areas would do better giving it part day sun.  Cold tolerance is down to about 23 degrees F.  Shown here are 5g plants we're putting on special.  We may also have some 15g for sale.

CHAMAEROPS CERIFERA
BLUE COLOR, NOT TOO TALL, COLD HARDY CLUMPING PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This suckering fan palm in native to Morocco in northern Africa and is often as wide as it is tall.  It doesn't get typically as tall as Chamaerops humilus and has a strong blue color when in sun.  It does sucker freely.  It loves full hot sun.  Cold tolerance is about 15 degrees F.  So, it's a great palm for folks in super cold areas.  It also grows well in the desert.  Shown here are the 15g plants I'm putting on special.  It is possible to mail order this size but our 5g size is much less expensive to ship and I'd offer a good price on them as well.

PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI
SOUTH AMERICAN COCONUT
LARGE, COCONUT APPEARING PALM

TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This rare and nearly extinct species from Bolivia in South America is a single trunk pinnate palm that gets to about forty feet height with a twelve to eighteen inches in trunk diameter.  In its natural habitat high in the Andes Mountains, it sees a fair amount of cold weather.  In domestic gardens, reports of this species tolerating temperatures into the teens have surfaced.  Seeds are huge in size, expensive and germination is sporadic.  In most areas, this species tolerates full sun.  In the desert, part sun is probably bettr.  Give it plenty of room to grow - it is a large tree.  Many think it resembles the Coconut Palm, thus the common name.  The 5g on special are very nicely sized.  I'm also showing a 25 gallon plant below that is not on sale right now.

KING PALM
ARCHONTOPHOENIX CUNNINGHAMIANA
MEDIUM TO TALL, SINGLE TRUNK

TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

The popular King Palm is also known as the Piccabeen Palm or Bangalow palm.  It is native to several areas in Australia.  It can in habitat get to sixty feet tall, but in Southern California is usually not over 40 feet tall.  It is crown shafted with a gray trunk.  The crown shaft is green with some brown speckled areas.  Leaf length is 8 to 10 feet.  It is not particularly rare.  Other species of King Palms are.  (we grow them all).  Ramenta is present on the back of the leaflets, a hallmark of this species.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.  The triples we're putting on sale are triples in the 15g size.  Be aware, you can plant a single, double or triple.  All do great although the greater the number of plants put in, the slow the growth rate of all.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEAFLETS
COLLAGE OF CLOSE UP PHOTOS
SHOWS DIVERSITY OF LEAF & LEAFLET APPEARANCES

This is a "just for fun" post of many close up photographs of the leaflets of an assortment of unusual Encephalartos species from either South or Central Africa.  I am showing you these to demonstrate the diversity of the leaflets of this genus as a whole.  Some are blue.  And, there's many colors of green.  Leaflet shapes are also quite varied. You'll see shorter leaflets compared to long narrow ones.  Some are spiny, others are more smooth at their margins.  The texture on some are smooth and shiny whereas others are furry showing hairs.  Some stack on each other, others are widely spaced.  Some are prominently veined.  Many pictures were taken twelve inches away while others show more leaflets, taken at two feet.  I'll not get into mentioning the species shown here but rather show them as a whole so you see how different they are from each other.  All photos were taken at the nursery showing inventory leaflets and leaves.

PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA - MEDJOOL VARIETY
THE TRUE DATE PALM
TEN DAY SALE 5 GALLON PLANTS

This is a great cold hardy plant, being able to tolerate temperatures down into the mid-teens F.  It is hard to find this cultivar of the True Date Palm.  This is the one that gets blue and makes the best tasting dates.  The plants I'm offering on special were grown in a greenhouse so they are not showing that blue color yet.  But, they will when given direct sun and heat.  Remember, you need a male and female to get dates and the female bears the fruit.

These are nice 5g plants about three to four feet tall.  They demand full sun, can get up to 40 feet tall and inherently can sucker.  One would remove the suckers if he wants a single trunk.

CRYOSOPHILA STAURACANTHA
THE STAR PALM
MEDIUM SIZE, WHITE UNDERSIDE TO LEAVES
A VERY COOL PALM - PRETTY COLD HARDY

This single trunk fan palm is native to regions stretching from Mexico through Central America.  In the genus, there are multiple species.  All have prominent white powder on the underside of the leaflets as shown here.  Trunks are narrow.  Often you'll see what look like "spines" on the trunk.  But, these are a different structure - they are modified root spines.  They are quite interesting looking.  Right on the coast, this species can take full or part day sun.  Most would grow it in bright filtered light.  Expect heights ranging from ten feet to well over twenty feet.  Cold hardiness is into the upper twenties F.  Shown here are photos of the 15g size at the nursery.  Notice the white backs to the leaflets.  Also shown are photographs of a Cryosophila unknown species to show the typical appearance and trunk covered with "spines".  We usually have an assortment of sizes available.

GREEN LEAVES, SORT OF WISPY
THIN TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

Rarely do I have this hard to find palm and even more rarely do I put it on special.  It's one of the hardest of the Braheas to locate.  It can reach heights of over 80 feet and is native to Baja California, Mexico.  Trunks are thin.  Crowns of leaves are open.  Leaf color is typically green as shown here.  One of the best places to see this species is in Balboa Park, San Diego, less than a half mile from where I live.  It wants full sun, tolerates wind and dry conditions and is a good growing species.  Despite it's beauty, its a solid grower and a fine addition to any garden.

Shown here are the one gallon size of this branching palm from Africa.  Of course, you only see this branching habitat when it's in the ground and gets much larger.  It likes heat and sun.  Cold hardiness is somewhere in the mid-twenties F.  The interesting thing about these plants is that they branch above the ground - to be contrasted with suckering from the base.

The first three pictures are Hyphaene coriacea in 1g size.  If you get one of these, make sure you have the heat, sun and room for one.

CHAMAEDOREA CATARACTARUM
THE CAT PALM
A SEMI-DWARF CLUSTERING PALM
DOES BEST IN LESS THAN FULL SUN
GETS TO SIX FEET TALL

This species of palm has been sold under the name "Cat Palm", which is an abreviation for "cataractarum".   For Chamaedoreas and in the past, it was fairly easy to find.  Nowadays it's very difficult to find, especially with mature size as shown here.  It is a clustering palm that gets six feet tall.  It really doesn't form any trunk.  It likes water as it has a native habitat near river beds.  It is cold hardy into the mid 20's F. and I'd recommend, at most, a few hours of sun or filtered light.  It is native to the southern areas of Mexico and possibly into areas of Central America.  With less than adequate water it tends to look scrappy.  At the nursery, we offer mostly large plants, either 10 or 15 gallon size.  They typically are suckering with a near mature height.  See special below.

This super popular  palm is native to south Florida and Cuba.  It gets a very tall trunk with a height of forty feet or more.  The crown shaft is long and a prominent green.  The base of the trunk is swollen just above the ground.  Often you'll also see bulging in the mid-trunk.  It is a full sun plant and some are growing it in desert areas with success - in full sun.  Cold tolerance is like a King Palm, about 25 degrees F.  The one gallon on sale are 2.5 years old.  Since I took these photos, they have put on another leaf.  There's a shortage of this species on the market.  These are easy to mail order.

LARGER CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL ANY 15G PLANT WE HAVE!

This unique and larger cycad is native to Uganda.  In fact, at one point it was called the "Uganda Giant Cycad".  This is because it has leaves that extend almost straight up toward the sky and can be twelve feet long or more.  Leaflets are narrow and armed with small spines.  The caudex is a light color and in the wild can be up to ten feet tall.  Historically, as this species is similar to E. laurentianus, it was called also "Encephalartos laurentianus Lake George", referring to its specific habitat.  The nursery plants I'm showing today are multiple outdoor grown 15g plants.  We have other sizes as well, both larger and smaller.  A few of the lower photos show some real monster plants, grown from seed.  Note the appearance of these plants with their long leaves with narrow leaflets.  Enthusiasts love this species because it's a good growing cycad.  Right on the coast I'd give it half day sun.  It's not quite a sun-tolerant as many of the South African species.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.  You must mention this Special at the time of purchase for your discount.

RAVENEA XEROPHILA
MADAGASCAR XEROPHYTIC PALM
SUPER RARE - THREATENED
BLUE LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This endangered species of arid palm comes from Southern Madagascar in the "Spiny Forest" part of the country, where it grows at high elevation among the likes of cactus and other xerophytic species.  It prefers hot sun and can tolerate drought.  Natural habitat is from 1000 to 2500 feet, the trunk height is fifteen to twenty five feet with a diameter of one foot, and the trunk is covered with old leaf bases.  The leaves are rather short, up to six feet, curved downward and gray or gray-green in color.  A surprising characteristic of this species is found by anyone who has germinated seeds.  On germination, a huge radicle is produced.  It resembles a cycad more than a palm.  It is like a huge carrot attached to the seed.  This root and subsequent roots are good size and very long, showing how this species adaptation to search for deep water in its natural habitat.  I am suspicious that these roots may also retain water for emergency purposes.  This species does tolerate drought but responds to watering.  It is extremely slow growing.  Expect a mature height of twenty feet and a cold tolerance of at lest 25 degrees F.

Shown below are containerized one gallon plants of
Ravenea xerophila.  I've also shown one photo of a 15g plant.  Believe it or not, these 1g plants are already three to four years old.  The 15 gallon shown takes 8 years to produce.  Everyone who grows this species comments that 1) it is very slow and 2) it is typically blue, or a blue-green in color.   One final comment:  I think, that within a year or two, no nursery will offer this species in the U.S. and seeds will not come off the island of Madagascar.

Over the many decades we've been growing palms, I made friendship with Clayton York at Utopia Palms in Australia.  We'd chat from time to time about palms.  One of his keen interests was the palms of Madagascar.  About 15 years ago I had heard of the Dypsis species "highland redneck".  I never really knew what it was.  Clayton later described it.  The habitat photos below (c/o Palmpedia) were taken by him.  This species comes from southeastern Madagascar, has a thin trunk and gets to a height of about 40 feet. Note the red and fuzzy crown shaft in the photos.  Habitat elevation is 750 to 1000 feet.  Most are trying it in sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is presently not certain.  This species is super rare and not really seen on the market.

TEN DAY SPECIAL $32.50

You know, mention this special.  These bands are easy to ship.  I wish to thank Clayton York in Australia for the photos in the last row.

VARIEGATED RHAPIS EXCELSA
EXAMPLE OF A PLANT IN STOCK
EXOTIC AND TEND TO BE SMALL
DON'T LIKE TOO MUCH NITROGEN
LIMITED SUPPLIES AVAILABLE

This post is to remind readers that we still offer a limited supply of the highly coveted variegated Rhapis excelsa. So, we tend to have larger plants as opposed to small one gallons.  A source for seeds for these plants does not exist as seeds tend not to give the variegation.  I'd estimate we have about twenty of these beauties in stock, all different.  The plant shown is in a 7 gallon pot and about six feet tall and some with as many as ten canes.

PRICHARDIA LANAIENSIS
SEMI-DWARF GREEN LEAF HAWAIIAN FAN PALM
EXTREMELY RARE, ESPECIALLY WITH ANY SIZE
A FEW 15 GALLON AVAILABLE

This is a small to medium sized fan palm native to the island of Lanai.  Back ten years ago seed was available from these habitat plants.  It was given the name "Pritchardia lanaiensis" because of its locality.  Later Don Hodel in his publication on this genus asserts that this palm and Pritchardia glabrata are one in the same.  I've seen habitat photos that definitely don't look like glabrata.  With this said, this is a green leaf palm that should stay relatively small.  I doubt it'll ever get to twenty feet.  It takes coastal sun and is cold hardy to the mid-twenties F.  The photo in habitat below shows that a fruiting tree is not that big.  Our nursery plant shown below is in a 15 gallon pot.  We only have a few of this rare and hard to find species.

BROMELIADS IN THE LANDSCAPE
VERSATILE, EASY TO GROW COMPANION PLANTS
VAST ASSORTMENT TO SELECT FROM

Bromeliads are a type of plant, typically small in size, that are simple to grow and make great companion plants in the garden.  They are very versatile and, because most species grow epiphytically, can be used on poles, posts, fences, mounted to trees or simply grown in the ground among other plants.  Almost all species blossom once a year and the blossoms are long lived.  Blossoms appear in almost every color imaginable, anything from the rainbow.  Plants propagate by basal suckers and only really need care once a year when old plants are removed from the cluster.

Photographs here show plants that are attached to posts, mounted in trees and are used in water features.  There are some species that can get  up to five or six feet tall and are quite spectacular.  If one wishes, he can just put the bromeliad, with it's container, right into the ground. Some species tolerate full sun and many love filtered light and blossom well in such light.

Although we are not a "bromeliad only" nursery, we typically have a great supply of the most desirable types available for sale.  We emphasize beauty and color in our Bromeliads rather than rarity.  We consider one of our specialties our ability to offer a great selection of interesting and colorful companion plants.

CARYOTA URENS
COLD HARDY GIANT FISHTAIL
HEIGHTS ABOVE FIFTY FEET MATURE!
THINNER TRUNK THAN CARYOTA GIGAS
TEN DAY SPECIAL  NICE 15G PLANTS

Although this is not the tallest of all Fishtail Palms, be aware that it is much taller than C. gigas.  But, the trunk is more thin.  As an estimate of trunk diameter, think "telephone pole" size, white in color, and easily heights over fifty feet.  This is one of the quickest growing palms known.  A plant like shown here will be thirty feet tall in a few years.  Leaves are not as long or wide as Caryota gigas.  Their leaf color also is not as dark a green.  Brown tipping of leaflets can occur, especially if not given enough water.  Another important point:  All Caryotas are "monocarpic".  This means that, after a period of fifteen to twenty years age, the plant will blossom.  It flowers, hopefully produces seeds, and slowly dies over three to four years.

Cold tolerance is lower than Caryota gigas, down into the upper teens F.  Because of their height, these palms always end up in full sun.  So, acclimate your plant to sun and give it plenty of water, especially after first planting.

We recently got in some very large and over-sized one gallon multiples of this species.  We might have a few singles.  On most, this means there are three, sometimes four plants per pot.  Average height is about 18 inches.  They can be easily shipped.  This is one of the most sought after house palms around.  But, they are also a great garden species.  They are slow growing and have dark green leaves.  In the garden, they take full sun along the coast or filtered light far inland.  Mature garden height is about 30 feet.  Cold tolerance is 25 degrees F.  This species is native to Lord Howe Island, also the home of Hedyscepe and H. belmoreana.  This size is simple to ship for you folks a long ways away.

ACANTHUS MULLIS
BEAR'S BREECHES PLANT
ABOUT FIVE FEET TALL, UPRIGHT BLOSSOMS
HARD TO FIND NOWADAYS
TEN DAY SPECIAL LARGE 5G PLANTS

This herbaceous perennial is from southern Europe and northern Africa.  It is fairly easy to grow and prefers sun.  It has big, wavy green leaves.  It is somewhat reminiscent of the Snowflake Aralia which I've shown at this Blog.  Mature plant height is about three to four feet.  The blossoms are spectacular as shown -  up to 30 inches long.   They go vertically above the foliage and are lavender colored.  Plants in shade will not blossom.  A hard freeze can damage the leaves but plants usually come out of it.  This is a suckering plant.

Shown below is our 5 gallon size which I'm putting on special.  These can be mail ordered.

ANGEL WING BEGONIA
RED & GREEN FOLIAGE
PINK FLOWERS

NICE COMPANION PLANT
TEN DAY SPECIAL PRETTY 5G SIZE

There are many types of Begonias used as companion plants in the garden.  This particular variety is one of our favorites because the backs of the foliage are red on the bottom and green on the top and the blossoms (present now) are super pink.  It likes filtered light, sometimes will take full sun and is very durable.  It tolerates a freeze and uses average water.  Right now these are on special.  But the way, you can prune them to give a fuller, more low profile plant.  These plants have pink blossoms with red backs to the leaves.  The last photo shows landscape using a white variety of Begonia.

CHAMAEDOREA RADICALIS
DWARF SPECIES - RARELY OVER FIVE FEET

FILTERED LIGHT OR COASTAL SUN
NEAR MATURE SIZE NOW!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 7 GALLON SIZE

This is an interesting species that has two forms: a trunk-less form and one with a small to medium sized trunk.  It is from Mexico.  All forms are single trunk.  The trunk-less form has leaves three feet or less and never gets tall.  This is the form I'm offering on special here.  When this form blossoms, the flowers shoot up from he base of the plant and are typically taller than the leaves.  If you have a female, very pretty red seeds form if pollinated.   On the coast, some have grown this variety in a far amount of sun.  Of course, it thrives in filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.  The unique thing about these 7g plants is their size. All are multiple about three feet tall.  They are ready for the garden and can be shipped.

AECHMEA SPECIES
SILVER-GREEN LEAVES
UPRIGHT ORANGE BLOSSOM
BEAUTIFUL 10 INCH PLANTS

I've had this variety of Aechmea a few times.  The leaves are wide, silver green and without spines on the margins (nice thing).  When it blossoms, it is stunning.  It grows nicely outdoors here.  I've been giving them a bit of sun but not full sun.  These would be easy to mail order and, I suspect, be possible for growing inside the home.  I only have about six of them.  The last photo shows a blossom on the same species from this paste summer.

MULE PALM
BUTIA CAPITATA X SYAGRUS (QUEEN PALM)
HUGE 5G PLANTS - CHEAPER TO SHIP
MEDIUM HEIGHT - SUPER COLD HARDY!

Recently we got some "too good to be true" 5 gallon Mule Palms.  They are literally a 15g sized plant.  Why is this important?  Because people want these palms in colder areas and a 5g costs about 1/3 of what it costs to ship a 15g.  And, these plants are a 15 gallon size. For those who don't know, this amazing hybrid doesn't look like either parent.  To make the Mule Palm, the seed bearing parent has to be the Butia capitata.  The pollen donor is the Queen Palm.  The reverse doesn't produce a palm anything close to the Mule Palm.

They are remarkable because they are supper attractive.  Some say they have a resemblance to a Coconut.  They also usually just get to 25 feet - compared to the 60 foot height of the Queen.  And, they are very cold hardy - down to about 16 degrees.  I've got a customer in Tucson, AZ that can't grow Queen Palms b/c they freeze in the winter.  Our Mule Palms thrive there.  This hybrid tolerates desert sun.  And, they don't make any fruit to mess up your pool!  This is why they are called the "Mule" Palm.  What a combination of good qualities!

The plants shown here are in limited numbers.  They are about six feet tall in their pots.  They are overhead with thick bases and lush and green.  The last photo shows a boxed specimen that we sometimes have available.

DIOON CALIFANOI
MEDIUM SIZED MEXICAN CYCAD
KEELED, ARCHING LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL CITRUS POT SIZE

There is some type of seductive quality to this rare species of Dioon.  I think it's because of the compact, rigid, keeled and curved leaves.  At times they are a bit bizarre appearing - but very appealing.  This is a species that takes on the mature appearance over time.  As a young plant you might think it's a "ho-hummer".  But, as it ages, it develops its traditional appearance and gets more attractive.  Leaves are four to five feet long.  In a domestic situation, a plant with a three foot trunk would be enormous.  It takes full sun and is cold hardy into the lower 20's F.

BRAHEA SPECIES "SUPER SILVER"
BLUE FAN PALM FROM MEXICO
THINNER TRUNK THAN BRAHEA ARMATA
AND, FASTER GROWING

A FEW 5 GALLON PLANTS AVAILABLE

Shown here is a 5 gallon plant of a Brahea species from Mexico that is presently known as "Brahea species Super Silver".   Undoubtedly someone will describe it in the near future.  Seeds have been available only twice.  These plants are from the first batch that came along.  It is a blue plant but doesn't show the blue until older.  It wants full hot sun and would be perfect for the desert.  I suspect the cold tolerance is similar to Brahea armata, about 15 degrees F.  But, compared to the later, this species trunk is much thinner and it is faster growing.  But, the blue color is just as intense.  Shown here is the 5g size.  Limited numbers.  Mature plant photos below c/o RPS.

FANTASTIC DEAL - NEAR INTERIOR QUALITY

We just got in about an assortment of Lady Palms which are near perfect - almost as nice as the expensive ones we bring in out of Hawaii.  But, they are locally grown and better priced.  And, we are offering them on special.  Have you ever wondered why you hardly ever see Rhapis on sale?  It's because they are super slow growing.  The plants shown here are eight, maybe ten years old.  Therefore, growers have little motivation to sell them cheap.  The plants shown here are nice enough for a bank or hotel lobby, a professional office or even your living room.

Rhapis excelsa
is native to Asia and typically doesn't get much over 8 feet tall in a pot.  They do great in shady locations of the garden or inside the home.  They are a very nice patio plant.  Cold hardiness is about 20 degrees F.  They want low dose fertilizer.  Too much fertilizer will burn them.  The plants on special here are 15g size, very full with lots of canes.  They won't last long.

CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA
LUSH & TROPICAL EXOTIC CYCAD

UNDERSTORY - FILTERED LIGHT
GET THEM BEFORE THEY GO INTO BOXES!
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE CONING SIZED 15G PLANTS

Last year we acquired a few dozen absolutely huge 15 gallon Ceratozamia mexicana.  This is the "prototype" of the Ceratozamias. yet still fairly uncommon at nurseries.  It is native to tropical mountains in eastern Mexico where it grows in humid or arid areas under forest trees.  It is very cold hardy, probably going into the upper teens.  It is easy to grow in the SF Bay area.  It has green leaves that spread horizontally as shown here.  Leaflets are long and come to a point but aren't that sharp.  It is slow growing and a fifty year old plant has a caudex that reaches only about 18 inches height.  It prefers filtered light.

The plants on sale are about twelve years old or more by estimate.  They have seen our local cold, being outdoor grown in northern SD County under shade cloth.  There are many to choose from.  Caudex size ranges from six to eleven inches.  Almost all have coned, so we could pick a sexed pair if one requests.  All are from the same seed batch.

REGULAR PRICE THESE SIZES $500
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS BATCH 15G $350

Just mention this special at time of purchase to get your discount.  These plants are shippable right to your door.  They are instant understory landscape and all are gorgeous.  And, they are a bargain at this price and will (within a short time) all go into boxes and be sold at a much higher price.  The first two rows of photos are examples of the plants on sale right now.

TILLANDSIA CLUSTERS
MANY AIRPLANTS IN ONE BUNCH

SOME MOUNTED - SOME NOT
AND READY FOR TREE TRUNKS OR HANGING
TEN DAY SPECIAL TWO SIZES!
GOING INTO BLOSSOM RIGHT NOW!

These New World epiphytic plants are great fun.  They are one of the many genera of Bromeliads.  Native to regions stretching from the Southern US down to South America, these plants attach to tree trunks, branches, posts, fences or anything they can find.  Most do not live in the ground.  They live off of natural rainfall or humidity and are not harmful to the hosting plant/tree.  All will flower.  Flower color depends on the species.  These flowers appear in spring-summer.  We have perhaps six to eight varieties.  Most growers divide plants into single plants and sell them one at a time.  We are offering bunches of many plants together.  Some bunches are a decade old.  You can put them on a piece of bark, wood or whatever you want.  We have both un-mounted and mounted on wood plants.  They are easy to care for outside.  Of note, they are not super expensive but are not cheap.  This is because they are so old.

The first two rows show the medium sizes.  The last row shows large.

CHAMAEDOREA GLAUCIFOLIA
SUPER SIMILAR TO C. PLUMOSA

TAKES A FAIR AMOUNT OF SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

It's been quite a while since I've offered this Chamaedorea.  It is very similar to Chamaedorea plumosa - except:  The plumosa has a more plumose leaf and takes a little more sun.  The glaucifolia has the silver powder on the leaf stems and crown shaft as shown here.  Otherwise, you would mistake the two.  These 5g and multiples. This is a single trunk species.  Mature height is about 14 feet.  It takes almost full sun on the coast and is quick growing. Cold hardiness is about 25 degrees F.

TRITHRINAX CAMPESTRIS
BLUE, SUCKERING FAN PALM
VERY COLD HARDY

LIMITED NUMBER OLD SUCKERING 5G
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This South American suckering fan palm comes from Argentina and Uruguay.  From these locations, you might suspect it could have quite a bit of cold hardiness, and this is the case with not only this species of Trithrinax, but of the genus as a whole.  Availability of seeds of this species has been sparse to nonexistent.  And, as a young plant, it is quite slow growing.  Consequently, to get a good sized container plant can take a decade or more.  We were fortunate to offer some very nice 5g plants as shown below.  I'd estimate their age at 7 years.  They are dividing and very chunky at the base.  They are totally acclimated to full hot sun and are intensely blue.  This is a perfect selection for someone who lives in an interior area with lots of heat.

Overall height of this species is up to twenty feet.  Multiple stems are produced, but usually the number is just several.  Leaves are small, typically about two feet wide.  The segments of the leaves are pointed and sharp.  Trunks retain old leaf bases but, like
Washingtonia, eventually fall off.  This is a drought tolerant species and can take temperatures well into the 100's F. and cold tolerance is into the teens.  Of note, most specimens I've seen are blue.  The last two photos show a mature plant that is blue-green in color, probably due to the fact that it's not getting full sun.

PHOENIX LOUREIROI VARIETY HANCEANA
MOUNTAIN DATE PALM

SINGLE TRUNK - MEDIUM SIZE
ALTERNATIVE TO LARGE CANARY PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Shown here are some 5g plants of seeds that were labeled "Phoenix loureiroi variety hanceana".  There's always been confusion on naming this particular palm.  But, there are two varieties of P. loureiroi.  The variety discussed here and shown is Phoenix loureiroi variety loueiroi and this one is synonymous with hanceana.  It is a medium height, single trunk, armed pinnate palm from various regions in Asia.  Habitat stretches from central Asia down to the Philippines.  Mature height is variable but usually under twenty feet.  The specimen shown in Balboa Park, San Diego below is 20 years old and ten feet tall.  It's a sun species with a cold tolerance to at least the low 20's F.

ENCEPHALARTOS ARENARIUS
ENDANGERED SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD

COLOR GREEN, BLUE GREEN OR GREEN
MEDIUM SIZED MATURE
TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 1 GALLON PLANTS

This endangered South African cycad is native to the Eastern Cape region of the Republic of South Africa.  It is sometimes called the Alexandria Cycad because its native population is near the town of Alexandria where only about fifteen hundred plants remain in the wild.  Mature, it is medium sized cycad with a trunk height up to six feet but more typically two to three feet.  Leaf color varies from a dark green to blue green.  There is actually a small population of super rare plants that are known as the "True Blue Arenarius"- and produce a slightly different male and female cone.  Leaflets are prominently barbed and spiny.  One might consider the closest relative to this species to be Encephalartos horridus from a leaflet shape viewpoint.

Culture is quite simple.  Along our coast they tolerate full sun but also do well in partial sun or strong filtered light.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F. although plants are easy to cold protect.  The one gallons I'm putting on special are nicely sized with a blue-green leaf color.  They are about four to five years old.

REGULAR PRICE THESE ONE GALLON $85
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE ONE GALLON $70

AUSTRALIAN TREE FERN
CYATHEA COOPERI

FAST GROWING, CAN GET TALLER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

The Australian Tree Fern in native to several areas on the eastern side of Australia.  It is a faster growing tree fern that can get to a height of over forty feet.  The two photos from my garden in San Diego show potential height.  I have several with twenty-five feet of trunk.  I'm about 8 miles from the ocean and they take my sun fairly well.  Trunks can get up to twelve inches thick although most are more thin.  This species is a bigger alternative to the Tasmanian Tree Fern and has a thicker trunk and longer leaves.  This species tolerates coastal sun or part day sun.  It is cold hardy into the upper twenties or lower.

10G PLANTS - SEVEN FEET TALL
THE BEST "NEIGHBOR BLOCKER"

VARIEGATED SHELL GINGER

5G SIZE AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL

This is a super popular variety of ginger that blossoms in the summer.  Blossoms are white with yellow and red throats.  Mature height of these plants is six to seven feet.  The leaves are prominently variegated with lighter green and yellow.  Blossoms are long lived but not fragrant.  Blossoms occur during the summer.  I think they do best in part day sun although right on the coast folks grow them in full sun.  Cold tolerance is one of the better for ginger, probably the mid-twenties F.  The last photo shows our 15g size of the green form of this species which is not on sale right now.

KENTIOPSIS OLIVIFORMIS
A GREAT CROWN SHAFTED PALM FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

I've discussed this great New Caledonian species before because it is such a good species for those of us in Southern California.  It comes from high elevation in its native habitat, is a good growing palm and can tolerate full sun easily along the coastal strip.  Its cold hardiness is down to about 23 degrees, better than the King Palm or Kentia Palm.  It has an average trunk diameter of eight to ten inches and a mature height of usually about thirty feet.  It can also be grown in part day sun or strong filtered light.

Shown here is a nice 25g plant along with other sizes.  You'll notice that the leaf color in the sun is blue-green in a way.  It is certainly not a lime green color.  Also, some new leaves may emerge with a hint of red color.  Growth rate is good.  We have a reasonable assortment of all sizes although our larger plants are almost sold out.  This species is highly recommended in So Cal.

INSTANT LANDSCAPE WITH RARE PALM SPECIES
DESIRABLE 25 GALLON SIZE
MAKES FOR INSTANT APPEAL

In the past, the wooden 24 inch box was the traditional next step for moving up a 15 gallon sized plant.  But, nowadays there are very nice larger plastic containers.  One that we really like is the 25 gallon size.  We've found that customers much prefer them over the 24 inch box.  Not only are they easier to handle and plant, but they also last much longer.  And, the bottoms don't rot out.  Shown here is an assortment of multiple rare palm species in the 25 gallon pot.  We certainly have many more species available in this size, but these will give you the idea.  They are easy to dolly and two people can easily plant them.  Also, they typically fit nicely into a pickup or even a large SUV.  We can also deliver them or ship them on a pallet with other plants.

MEDIUM SIZE - HEIGHT TO FIFTEEN FEET
TEN DAY SPECIAL MASSIVE 5 GALLON PLANTS
CHECK OUT THE SIZE - 2 FEET OF TRUNK!

This Hawaiian species of Pritchardia is native to the eastern and drier parts of the island of Molakai.  It was named after a botanist who worked their the habitat.  It gets to a height of about five meters with typical leaf width four to five feet.  It has a long green leaf stem.  Essentially all of the Hawaiian Pritchardias can be grown in Southern CA.  The species from the South Pacific are problematical because of our cold winters.  This species takes full sun right along the coast but wants part day sun or filtered light inland.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  The 5 gallon plants on special are absolute huge and massive for their containers.  We measured them and a few have 24 inches of trunk (ground to new spar emerging).  They are over five to six feet tall in their pots.  These plants are more like a 15 gallon sized plant.  We have limited numbers this size.  Of note, although not on sale right now, we also have smaller and larger sizes of this species available.

ARENGA MICRANTHA
LARGE SUCKERING PINNATE PALM FROM INDIA THAT TOLERATES COLD
WE HAVE A FEW 15 GALLON PLANTS
SUPER DIFFICULT TO FIND

This morning I'm showing you a hard to find suckering palm from northern India, Tibet and surrounding areas.  Quite remarkably, it's native habitat is at elevations of 5000 to 7500 feet.  As you'd suspect, it tolerates temperatures way below freezing, probably into the upper teens F.  I don't really know for sure as of yet.  But, it's felt to be the most cold hardy of the genus Arenga

It's not a small Arenga.  It can get up to 20 feet with trunks about 8 inches (mature) in diameter.  Like other species of the genus, the trunks are hairy and a bit shaggy.  Leaves are large and silver colored on their underside.  It is a part day sun or filtered light species.

Shown here is a 15 gallon nursery plant.  A habitat photo by T. Spanner are also shown.  For those of you in colder areas, this is a great palm.  We only have a few for sale.

ARENGA PINNATA
THE SUGAR PALM
NICE 15 GALLON SIZE AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

As many of you know, Arengas are usually suckering palms.  But, there are several single trunk species.  Arenga pinnata is one of these.  It is felt to be native to Indonesia and is a large palm.  It is a pinnate palm with a fibrous trunk made from woven fibers.  Overall height is forty to fifty feet and the trunk gets to a diameter of two feet.  The leaves are held upright and can be over twenty feet long.  The leaflets, like all Arenga, has jagged terminal ends.

This is a monocarpic species and will die when the plant flowers.  Other suckering Arenga has new trunks to replace dying flowering trunks.  But, since this species has only one trunk, like a Caryota it will be gone a few years after the flowers appear.  The Sugar Palm is a full sun species with cold tolerance into the mid-twenties F.  Shown here is a 15g nursery plant and photos of mature specimens.  We also have 5g for sale.  Note the woven material on the trunk.  It is very interesting to see in person.

ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS
FAST GROWING - CENTRAL AFRICAN
HUGE PLANTS IN SMALLER ONE GALLON POT
GREAT BUY!
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE PLANTS!

This species from Zimbabwe, Africa, and has similar species from local habitats.  For this reason, in the past, plants were considered to be part of the "Manikensis Complex".  Others put into this group later became species such as E. gratus, E. chimanimaniensis, concinus, bandula, etc.  Now most are recognized as legitimate species.
Encephalartos manikensis is a medium sized cycad.  Trunks can get up to three or even five feet tall.  Clustering does occur.  Leaves are about six feet long, leaflets one inch wide.  Leaves are held upright at about a 45 degree angle.

As it is most Central African cycads, one will find that it does better with humidity than some of the South African species but is still quite as cold hardy.  It will tolerate a freeze and can usually take temperatures down into the mid-twenties.  Along the coast, full sun is tolerated well.  In desert areas, filtered light would be best.

These one gallons are huge - about the size of a nice 5g or even a small 15g.  Caudexes are two to three inches wide and leaves come up to your abdomen or chest.  They'd be cheap to ship because they're in one gallon pots.  Limited numbers.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS
NURSERY CREDIT FOR USED PLASTIC POTS

I like to remind plant enthusiasts to recycle their plastic containers.  We will take them and give you a credit toward any purchase at the nursery.  Or, if you just don't know what to do with them and are conservative minded, drop them off at our nursery location.  We'll put them to good use.  We've been doing this for decades and think it's the right thing to do for the environment.  We are especially looking for larger pots, 15g and bigger.  We also really appreciate 7g and citrus pots.  However, tiny pots like 4 or 6 inch are not containers that we really utilize.

So, don't clutter the environment by giving them to the garbage man or your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!

THE SEASHORE PALM
CLUSTERING, DWARF PALM

This pinnate palm rarely gets over six feet tall, is native to coastal Brazil and has fluffy leaves (plumose).  It's a sun species with a cold hardiness into the upper teens F.

ARENGA ENGLERI

THE DWARF SUGAR PALM
SUCKERING, NOT TOO TALL

This suckering Asian species doesn't get over about ten feet tall and has silver color to the back of the leaflets.  The leaflets have chopped ends.  It'll take coastal sun and part day sun inland.  Cold tolerance about 18 degrees F.

BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT - YES, BLUE COLOR!

This variety of the South American Pindo Palm is super color because of its unusual blue color.  It gets to a height of about fifteen feet in three decades and is single trunk.  It loves full sun and is cold hardy to 15 degrees F.

BRAHEA CLARA
BLUE SINGLE TRUNK MEXICAN PALM
SUPER COLD HARDY

This palm is quite similar to the more common Brahea armata.  It loves sun, takes cold to 15 degrees and is blue in color.  It gets to a height of no more than 20 feet.  Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan Palm, it has longer petioles and is faster growing.  Another curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.  Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more like a bad set of shark's teeth as shown here.
Brahea clara Brahea clara

BRAHEA DECUMBENS

BLUE, DWARF AND SUCKERING
EXCELLENT COLD HARDY SMALLER PALM

This suckering species of fan palm develops a blue color with age and sun.  Shown is a 5g.  We never can keep them in stock to get them to 15g.  They love hot sun, get to a height of no more than six feet and sucker.  this is an ideal palm where views are a concern.  They are very slow growing.

BUTIA X SYAGRUS
THE MULE PALM
HYBRID THAT LOOKS LIKE NEITHER PARENT

This surprisingly very cold hardy palm is being grown in areas that routinely see bad weather.  When Queen Palms die in Tucson, AZ, this one survives.  It gets to 25 feet and loves hot sun.  Some say that, when mature, they look a little bit like a Coconut.  It's also a very good growing hybrid with lots of vigor.  It likes sun and is cold hardy to about 16 or 17 degrees.

COPERNICIA ALBA
TALL THIN TRUNK
SINGLE STEM FAN PALM

Copernicia is a rare genus of fan palms mostly native to Caribbean Islands such as Cuba.  This species has a thin trunk and gets over 40 feet tall.  For an exotic genus, it's surprisingly cold hardy perhaps into the upper teens F.  It loves sun and heat.
Copernicia alba Copernicia alba
JUBAEA CHILENSIS
CHILEAN WINE PALM
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM

This thick trunked pinnate palm is slow growing but manages to get a trunk fatter than any other palm.  Native to Chile, it can reach a height of 40 feet and trunk diameter of 4 feet.  It loves hot sun and is cold hardy to 16 degrees.  The 15g plant shown here is 10 years old.  This is why this species is more costly than other palms.  The trunk is also smooth as shown here with no attached leaf bases.
Jubaea chilensis Jubaea chilensis

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS

THE CHINESE FAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM SIZE

This Asian species never really gets to a height much above 25 feet.  It's so slow growing that anything over ten feet seems to take an eternity.  It has a twelve inch thick trunk and flat green leaves.  In most areas it takes full sun but also tolerates filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 18 degrees F.
lIVISTONA CHINENSIS lIVISTONA CHINENSIS

LIVISTONA DECIPIENS
AKA LIVISTONA DECORA
MEDIUM TO TALL HEIGHT, THIN TRUNK

This Australian fan palm can get over 40 feet tall, has a thin trunk and droopy leaflets.   Because of the latter fact it's known as the Ribbon Palm.  Leaflets hang toward the ground.  It likes full sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It's quite handsome.
Livistona decipiens decora Livistona decipiens
PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
CLUMPING SPECIES MEDIUM SIZE

This is a type of Date Palm that clusters.  It gets its name from the fact that trunks recline (lean) with age and height.  It has a variable height.  But, you can count on at least 15 feet.  Some clumps get taller.  It loves sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.
Phoenix reclinata Phoenix reclinata

PHOENIX THEOPHRASTI
THE CRETAN DATE PALM
BUSHY AND NOT TOO TALL

This Date Palm is native to the island of Crete, southern Greece and some nearby islands.  It is a suckering palm and not quite as tall as the Phoenix dactylifera.  Its dates are not edible.  Leaf color is typically lime green.  Height can get up to thirty feet.  Leaves are quite plumose.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees or lower and it loves full and hot sun.

Phoenix theophrasti  Phoenix theophrasti
SABAL CAUSIARUM
TALL FAN PALM
THICK CONCRETE LIKE TRUNKS

This Caribbean fan palm can get rather tall, up to fifty feet.  Its remarkable characteristic are the thick, concrete colored and appearing trunks.  They are really impressive and get up to two feet thick.  Leaf color is blue green.  This palm loves sun and is cold hardy into the mid to upper teens F.
Sabal causiarum Sabal causiarum
SABAL MINOR
THE SMALLEST SABAL
DWARF PALM - SIX FEET TALL

This fan palm is native to the southeastern part of the U.S.  It rarely gets over six feet tall.  It puts out blossoms that are taller than the leaves, producing many small black seeds.  Leaves are sort of large compared to its dwarf height.  It can take sun or shade and is cold hardy to 15 degrees.
Sabal minor Sabal minor

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
SUPER COLD HARDY
SMALL, CUTE LEAVES

This Asian species of Windmill Palm is quite difficult to find.  That's because it's very slow growing.  The 15g plant shown here is about 8 years old.  They typically don't get tall.  In a few decades, a ten foot palm could be expected.  They love full sun and are cold hardy to 15 degrees F.  Leaves are quite small and flat as shown here.

Trachycarpus wagnerianus Trachycarpus wagnerianus

SYAGRUS SCHIZOPHYLLA X ROMANZOFFIANA

THE COCONUT QUEEN
BEAUTIFUL HYBRID PALM YET COLD HARDY

We don't know as of yet the cold hardiness of this very handsome hybrid palm developed in Thailand.  It's quite a new thing.  It is prettier than both parents.  Anticipated height is 30 feet, so it's shorter than a standard Queen Palm.  It likes full sun and appears to be cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.

TRITHRINAX ACANTHICOMA
AKA TRITHRINAS BRASILIENSIS
MEDIUM HEIGHT, SPINEY TRUNK

This South American, single trunk fan palm is unlike some of its suckering kin below.  This plant gets to a height of about 20 feet and has a random pattern of long spines protruding from the trunk.  Leaves are green, medium sized.  It likes sun and is cold hardy well into the upper teens F.  The trunk is indeed different - liked by some, hated by others.
Trithrinax acanthicoma Trithrinax acanthicoma

TRITHRINAX CAMPESTRIS
SUCKERING BLUE FAN PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT

This South American species is nothing like T. acanthicoma above.  It suckers, has a prominent blue color and has sharp points on the end of its leaf segments.  But, it is attractive and cold hardy to about 17 degrees F.  Expect a mature height of ten to twenty feet.

A LOOK AT THE NURSERY
QUICK PHOTO TOUR

Recently, on a drizzling day, sort of gray and gloomy, the following photos were taken by Alma, one of the staff.  These pictures show the unique combination of palms, cycads and succulents that we're offering.  You can see how nicely they all blend together.  We're showing these photos so you get a feel for our Nursery.

GREAT PALM TREES FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Below are pictures of about thirty five palm species that all do well in Southern California.  In the group of palms below,  I left off the most common species that, it seems, everyone knows about.  So, there are no Queen Palms and Mexican Fan Palms below.  But, this group includes species that may be a bit unusual and more interesting.  This is not a complete list.  For instance, within any given genus, there may be dozens other species that do well here.  If I showed every species that you can grow, it would be too overwhelming.  So, I've kept it simple and show representative pictures.  I think, for a starting point, this will suffice.

I have chosen to show mature plants in gardens.  I tried to use mostly pictures from gardens in Southern California to show examples.  Some are from elsewhere.  This provides a quick view of species that you may want to try.  Some are for sun, others for shade.  Some are more difficult to grow than others.  I'm not commenting on each species presently.  But, throughout my Blog, there are comments on almost all of these.  If you don't live here in Southern California, realize that many of these species may live in your area as well.

I hope you enjoy this.  We, of course, have most or all of these palms for sale at the nursery in an assortment of sizes.  And, for your enthusiasts, we probably have several hundred other cool species for you to try.

and I wanted to keep it simple.  I have utilized these species in a brief article summarizing Palms for Southern
California elsewhere at this website

PLANT CONTAINER SIZES

For growers here on the West Coast, there are black plastic containers that most of us use on our plants.  Surprisingly, there are differences between the pots used
on the West Coast and East Coast of the U.S.  Here we refer to most containers by "gallon size"  On the East Coast pots are referred to by "diameter in inches".  So,
back East you might find a plant in a "14 inch pot".  Here is might be called a "15 gallon pot".  If you visit our price and availability catalog, plants are shown by their
pot size.  I'm hoping that this Blog post this morning will help clarify what individual pots look like.

THIS CONTAINER
BAND SIZE CONTAINER
This pot is 3 x 3 x 9 inches, square in shape.  It is used for seedling plants.  For most growers, it has replaced the one gallon pot.  It is a bit deeper and easier to place in carrying trays.  It also conserves space on benches because these can be placed close together.  You can get a pretty nice plant in a band container, sometimes up to 30 inches tall.
band container chamaedorea in band
ONE GALLON POT
This is a very common pot used, especially by flower growers and those producing small shrubs.  It's a typical first step after germinating a seedling.  We prefer using the band containers above as they conserve table and bench space more efficiently and are deeper.  Diameter of this pot is six inches but it's only about seven inches deep.
one gallon pot plants in 1g pots

TWO GALLON POT
This pot is 7 to 8 inches wide and about 8 inches deep.  It is a nice size to move a band plant into.  But, it is not particularly deep, so you have to make sure the roots fit into the container. This pot will produce an average plant that is about 2 feet tall. We grow a lot of palms in these pots.
2g pot empty plant in 2g oot
FIVE GALLON POT
This pot is 10 inches wide and about 10 inches deep.  It produces a plant that is one of the most common sized palms that we sell.  It is popular because it's not too heavy to lift and plants are typically three to five feet tall, depending on the species.
5 gallon pot plants in 5g pots
SEVEN GALLON POT
We really like this container because it produces a good sized plant but isn't as heavy to carry as a 15g.  But, for some manufacturing reason, this pot costs twice as much as a 15g.  Therefore, most growers aren't buying this sized pot very much nowadays.  It is 12 inches wide, and about 12 inches deep.
7 gallon pot palm in 7g pot
FIFTEEN GALLON POT
This is the most popular sized purchased by people who want a landscape or near-landscape ready size of plant.  This container typically supports a palm from four to eight feet size.  Weight of this size of container with soil and plant is usually sixty to ninety pounds.  It's size is 15 to 16 inches wide and 16 inches deep.  Note how this size pot usually has a nice carrying lip at the top of the pot.
15g pot plant in 15g pot
TWENTY/TWENTY-FIVE GALLON POTS
This is the next size up from a 15g.  These pots are typically about 18 to 20 inches wide and 16 to 18 inches deep.  They weight anywhere from 125 to 150 pounds with their soil.  They can produce a plant larger than the 15g, typically 8 to 10 feet. They usually have a flat lip on the top as shown. The pot shown here is actually a 25g pot.  20 g are a bit smaller.
25 g pot plant in 25g pot
24 INCH BOX CONTAINER
This box is 24 inches wide, square in shape and about 22 to 24 inches deep.  The weight of this container depends on the mix, but is anywhere from 175 to 300 pounds (this heavier weight is if one is using a very heavy soil).  It takes two men to lift one of these.  We prefer plastic boxes as shown here, but they are much more expensive than wooden box.  They last a very long time.
