DIOON ARGENTEUM
A SUPER RARE SILVER-GREEN DIOON FROM MEXICO

FINE WHITE HAIRS GIVE WHITE FUZZ TO THE LEAVES
A NICE 15 GALLON PLANT

In about the year 2003, this new species was discovered and described by cycad taxonomists.  Since then, it has been the dream of collectors to obtain it.  Native to Oaxaca, Mexico, it grows in a dry scrub forest among pine trees at 2500 to 5000 foot elevations.  It is most known for its silver color to the leaves.  This is because leaflets and leaf stems have a plentiful amount of white hairs.  One can mistake these for a mealy bug infestation, but they are from these hairs.  With the photos below, I've tried to give close up pictures showing this white fuzz - the hallmark of this cycad.  Mature specimens have about a foot wide caudex and can get up to 15 feet.  Along the coast it'd take full sun and should be cold hardy to the low 20's F.  The plant shown here is in a 15g pot that recently arrived to our nursery.  It has a ten inch caudex and, unfortunately, sold yesterday.  But, I thought it was worth showing readers.  Many of you have probably never seen this species.

STANGERIA ERIOPUS
RARE DWARF SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
ALMOST LOOKS LIKE A FERN

TEN DAY SPECIAL CITRUS POT SIZE

Enthusiasts love this species for a lot of reasons.  It is small, never over about four feet tall.  It is also quick growing with attractive fern like leaves.  It also tolerates filtered light or coastal sun and is easy to "sneak into" that small open area on the garden floor.  We are offering citrus pot plants at an excellent price.  This species is CITES protected and endangered in the wild.  Mature leaf length is three feet.  This species is easy to cone and you might want to consider getting several plants if you every want to set seeds and help conserve this great species.  The plants on this special have caudexes of two to three inches.  BTW, this species is getting increasingly difficult to find.

CHAMBEYRONIA HOOKERI
THE BLONDE FLAME THROWER PALM

GORGEOUS PALM FROM NEW CALEDONIA

The palm shown in the first two rows is a 5 gallon size of Chambeyronia hookeri with its blonde colored crown shaft.  This species is hard to find.  It is different in appearance from the dark green crown shafted form, Chambeyronia macrocarpa.  Here's some facts about this species:

•  Growth habit and care about the same as macrocarpa
•  Along the coast will tolerate full sun if you're are not too far inland
•  Crown shaft is yellow-tan colored and quite prominent
•  Cold tolerance is about 23 degrees
•  Growth rate on this species like macrocarpa is slow to medium but improves once planted in the ground.
• Trunk diameter is about 8 inches typically and overall height of mature plants is about 25 feet
•  Leaflets are shiny green, thick and sturdy, and quite wide as shown
•  Like macrocarpa, about 95% of the time throws newly emerging red leaf as shown here.  Rarely a plant will not throw new red leaves and there's no way of predicting this.
• Also makes a great interior palm inside the home

We have very limited numbers available of this species and only several in this 5 gallon size.  But, we also have some band sized plants.

CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA
THE FLAME THROWER PALM

NEWLY EMERGENT RED LEAF
SINGLE TRUNK - GORGEOUS!
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a super popular single trunk, pinnate palm from New Caledonia.  It is known as the Flame Thrower Palm because of its newly emerging red leaf.  This color lasts for two to three weeks and ranges in color from a dark burgundy to a pinkish-red.  Mature height is about 25 to 30 feet with a thin to medium girth trunk that has a long green crown shaft. Sometimes you'll see marbling of the trunk - known as the watermelon trait.  There is also a blond crown shaft form called Chamberyonia hookeri.  Growth rate is slow with most plants making two leaves a year.  It tolerates full sun right on the coast.  Far inland, people give it filtered light or morning sun.  Cold hardiness is about 23 degrees F.

CHAMAEDOREA RADICALIS
TALL TRUNKING FORM

LOOK BEST IN SMALL COLONIES
TEN DAY SPECIAL LARGE BANDS

There are two forms of Chamaedorea radicalis:  The smaller dwarf form and the trunking form.  Both are native to Mexico.  The trunking form is what I'm putting on special presently.  It has a thin trunk with rings, gets way overhead and tolerates coastal sun.  The last photo shows how big a 5g can get.  These are fast growing and have a cold hardiness perhaps into the upper teens F.  They look best with several growing size by side.  The bands on sale have two or three plants per pot.  This is a good buy.

CARYOTA GIGAS
"THAI MOUNTAIN GIANT", "KING KONG PALM", "BLACK STEM FISHTAIL"

COMPARISON WITH
CARYOTA URENS

Yes, this beautiful large palm from northern Thailand has been given a lot of common names.  I'm showing you today some boxed size plants of this species.  We also have 15g for sale.  But, I thought I'd make a few points about this plant that you may not know and make some comparisons to Caryota urens:

•It has an extremely thick fat trunk that can get up to three feet wide (see last photo).  This is much thicker than C. urens.
•Trunk height in Southern California is hardly ever over 35 feet, less than most of us expected.  C. urens can get over 60 feet with ease.
• It appears to tolerate full sun better than C. urens.  By this I mean it has less brown tipping on the leaflets
• It appears to have a shorter life span than expected, often blossoming in less than 15 years. This is less than C. urens.
• It has very wide and long leaves, up to fifteen feet in length and provides good shade underneath.  Caryota urens' leaves are smaller but still quite large.
• It is not as cold hardy as C. urens and will burn in the low 20's F.  But, most plants will survive and return from temperatures of 20 degrees f.
• It is quick growing but does not put on vertical height as fast as Caryota urens.
• If your plant doesn't look good, it's probably from your lack of giving it adequate water (if there's no cold burn)
• It is the most popular Fishtail Palm presently.  In the past, before this species introduction, C. urens was the most popular.  I think people really like the leaves and leaflet shape..

We have a great selection available and can ship smaller sizes up to 15 gallon plants.  Photos shown here are only of Caryota gigas.

ANTHURIUM PLOWMANII
RARE TROPICAL UNDERSTORY COMPANION PLANT

LIMITED NUMBER AVAILABLE

We recently got in a handful of a very attractive, rare and unusual filtered light companion plant - Anthurium plowmanii.  The last time we had these was two years ago.  Like other Birdsnest Anthuriums, they are a rosette type of plant with thick long leaves.  But, this species has very ruffled or wavy leaves.  They make cylindrical flower cones that give small red seeds.  Leaf length is three to four feet.  Native habitat stretches from Brazil north in South America.  Culture requires filtered light.   Cold hardiness is uncertain but definitely these plants take a freeze.  A few of the plants are variegated.  If you look, it's super difficult to find this species, especially with this size and age.  They can be mail ordered with special boxing.

THE CLIFF DATE PALM

MEDIUM SIZE
THINNER TRUNK THAN CANARY
FAIRLY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

I don't know if you've looked for this species, but the Cliff Date Palm is not so easy to find.  It is native to India and is about half the size of the Canary Island Palm in terms of trunk diameter and mature height.  Also, the crown is much smaller.  It is an armed species and has other characteristics of Phoenix like the induplicate leaflets (water held "in" - V shaped ).  Growth rate is medium, it tolerates full sun and is cold hardy into the mid-twenties or lower.  Shown here is a 5g plant which we are putting on sale.  We also have a limited number of 15g (quite nice) available.  The 5g size are easy to ship.

CYCAS REVOLUTA
THE SAGO PALM
COMMON BUT AFFORDABLE

PLANTS WITH FOOT OF TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL 7G & 10G SIZE

This is probably one of the few times that I'll present such a common cycad as the Sago Palm.  But, I do acquire them once in a while, usually with large collections.  So, I have to sell them.  The plants I'm putting on special are big for a 10g pot and have been grown in sun.  They have nearly a foot of trunk.  The price, I think, is very good.  This species takes coastal sun and is cold hardy to about 17 degrees F.  We are putting on sale some nicely sizes 7g and 10g.  They are the same price and appear as shown here.  They typically have at least a eight or more caudex.  These can be mail ordered.

SABAL LOUISIANA
A RARE FORM OF SABAL

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
CAN TAKE SOME SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

On the Internet there is a bit of discussion about this unusual type of Sabal.  It's much smaller than Sabal palmetto (like you'd see in Florida) but bigger than Sabal minor (like you'd see in Texas).  Searching shows that plants can develop five or more feet of trunk and they do tolerate full sun in Louisiana.  Leaves are medium sized mature and green in color.  The last photo shows a specimen that is in filtered light.  It's near impossible to find this "species" for sale. I have plants from apparently native seed that I'm offering on special here.  These would be easy to mail order.

FURCRAEA MACDOUGALII
UNUSUAL BLUE SUCCULENT

MEDIUM SIZED, TAKES FULL SUN
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 & 15 GALLON SIZE

It is actually difficult to find this sun loving blue succulent for sale.  It is native to Mexico and felt to be the tallest Agave type of plant.  It gets to a height of typically under ten feet, has a fairly narrow trunk and fleshy, thick and peculiar shaped blue leaves.  Well grown specimens can get a bit taller.  Shown here are two sizes we are putting on special.  The first row of photos is our 15g size.  The second row is the 5g size.  This species likes hot sun and is cold hardy at least to the low 20's F.  BTW, these are second generation plants from 'bulbils" from a customer's mature and fruiting plant.  Plant ages are five to six years.  They are easy to grow but growth rate is rather slow.

COCCOTHRINAX MIRAGUAMA
VERY POPULAR FAN PALM

CUTE MEDIUM SIZED SUN PALM

This is a rather thin trunked fan palm native to Cuba.  It attains a height of typically twenty to thirty feet, rarely taller.  Below the crown of leaves is an attractive pattern of meshed and woven fibers.  The middle and base of the trunk are usually woody.  You will note the the leaves are prominently divided into thin, long leaf segments.  These leaves are held by a prominent petiole.  The dorsal color of the leaves is typically green with a blue-green or sometimes silver color below.  This species likes sun and heat.  Cold tolerance is into the upper twenties F.

In general, all Coccothrinax are slow growing plants.  This is especially true in container grown plants.  In the ground they are quicker growing.  Shown here is a one gallon
Coccothirnax miraguama.  Of note, there are several varieties of C. miraguama, but I won't get into this here.  Shown are C. miraguama
in domestic plantings. For the garden, Coccothrinax are nice species to grow because they take sun and heat and don't take up too much room.  As you can see, the crowns of leaves are not large.  And, they are strikingly different than anything else you'd be growing.  We have various species of this genus for sale in a variety of species and do, on occasion, have this species as well.

COCCOTHRINAX BARBADENSIS
SLENDER, TALL AND CLEAN TRUNK
SMALLER GREEN LEAVES

LIKES SUN AND HEAT

I'm showing you a rare and very cool 5g plant.  This is Coccothrinax barbadensis.  It comes from Trinidad,  Venezuelan Antilles, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and probably other Caribbean locations.  It is a taller species with a very thin, clean trunk.  Trunks have been described as "flagpoles" and get over forty feet tall.  With age, old leaf bases fall off giving a clean look.  It has fan leaves about five feet across.  Both upper and lower sides are green.  It likes sun, heat and is cold hardy into the twenties, probably about 25 degrees F. or so.

This is a 5g plant shown here.  It would be easy to ship.  We may have 15g size as well.  Coccothrinax are slow to grow and produce in containers.  They are much quicker in the ground.  This is a great starter size for you.  At this stage, a grower has over five or six years into producing a 5g plant as shown here. I am also showing some garden plants.  The last photo is one of our 15g nursery plants.  Of note, we may have smaller sizes available than are shown here.

BRAHEA DECUMBENS
DWARF, BLUE, SUCKERING SUN PALM

TEN DAY SPECIAL 1.5 GALLON SIZE

This easy to grow Mexican fan palm hardly ever gets over five feet tall.  In the sun, it gets super blue, suckers and doesn't have a large footprint in the garden.  Surprisingly, when young, plants are green in color.  But, outdoors in the sun, I guarantee that they'll turn blue.  Leaves are small compared to other Braheas.  It is rare and, unfortunately, very slow growing.  I am showing here our 1.5 gallon plants which are about 4 years old.  They are quite old for their containers.  This species will take sun in all areas and does not like shade.  It does well in desert areas.  Cold tolerance is about 17 to 18 degrees.  We're offering both sizes on a ten day special.  And, for this slow growing species, they are oversized in their pots.  After a little acclimation, put them right into your garden!

COCCOTHRINAX ARGNETATA
MEDIUM SIZED FAN PALM
SMALL TRUNK - SILVER BACK T LEAVES

TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This smaller and very cute fan palm is native to areas of Florida, Mexico and into the Caribbean.  It has a blue green leaf color with more prominent silver on the underside of the leaf.  Mature height is rarely to twenty feet.  Leaves are about three to four feet across and prominently divided into segments.  It likes heat and sun.  It might also do well in desert areas.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  We have available 5g and some 15g plants.  It is ideal for people who want shorter but attractive sun tolerant palms.  But, particularly in pots, it is slow growing.  We're putting bands on sale today but do have 5 and 15 gallon available.

SABAL URESANA
YES, A BLUE SABAL!

MEDIUM SIZED MATURE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1G SIZE

For those of you who have tried to seek out this rather rare fan palm, you know that it's not easy to find.  Part of your quest should be to get plants from habitat location seeds.  Otherwise, seeds from botanical gardens can be hybridized and not give the nice blue color.  When plants are young, even as seedlings, you'll see the bluer leaves. This species is native to northern Mexico.  I've heard reports of plants even being found just inside the United States.  Expect a mature height of about 30 feet.  It wants full sun and is cold hardy into the mid-teens F.

THE MEXICAN BLUE FAN PALM

WATER CONSERVING - LOVES SUN AND HEAT
TEN DAY SPECIAL SUPER NICE 1 GALLON

This single trunk blue fan palm is native to Baja California, Mexico.  It is known for the definite blue color of the stiff fan leaves.  Rate of growth is slow.  In Southern California it is rare to see a domestic plant over twenty feet tall although reports are, that in habitat, they get almost twice this height.  The trunk is stocky.  Blossoms extend well out beyond the leaves.  It wants full sun, loves the desert climate and is cold hardy to about 15 degrees F.  The 1g size on sale are very nice.

NATIVE TO MADAGASCAR

SUPER ATTRACTIVE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G PLANTS

Just available is a new batch of very nice 15 gallon Ravenea glauca.  On smaller Ravenea, R. hildebrandtii is the smallest - a true dwarf.  This species Ravenea glauca is not that small, but it isn't super big at maturity.  It should max out at about 25 feet.  The trunk is narrow.  Leaves are green and soft to the touch.  In most areas it likes full sun.  In the desert, filtered light would be better.  Growth rate is medium.  Cold hardiness seems to be down to the mid to low 20's F.  These 15 gallon plants are very nice.
I wish to thank Palmpedia and RPS for photos below.

This sought after and very rare pinnate palm is native the Keys in Southern Florida.  It has a tidy silver trunk with very prominent rings as shown below.  Leaves are slightly plumose and not too long.  The prominent thing about this palm is that it has a very slow rate of growth here in California.  It may be quicker in south Florida, but not here.  The 1 gallons on special here are four years old!  Expect a mature height of no more than fifteen feet.  And, in this area, this height will take forty years to achieve.  It is a full sun palm in most areas.  Cold hardiness is into the mid to upper twenties F.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX "TERACARPA"
THE BEST KING PALM EVER!

SO, WHAT IS IT?
ARE THEY EVER ON SALE?
YES, 10 DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

Archontophoenix teracarpa is a fictitious name given to an unknown species/type of King Palm that I have in my garden and no one can identify.  I've been collecting seeds from it for quite a few years and offering it for sale.  Everyone who gets one agrees - "It's the best King Palm ever!"  It got the name from the Latin "Large body", which it has.  After trying to identify the species over many years and with no success, we coined the name "Archontophoenix teracarpa".  The closest species to it would be A. maxima but it's not the same.  So, what are the differences that makes teracarpa more ideal?

It is faster growing
It gets taller than the regular King Palm
It tolerates full sun better
It doesn't brown tip in full sun
It has a blue crown shaft
It has a super thick trunk

DYPSIS LEPTOCHEILOS
THE TEDDY BEAR PALM
EVERYONE LOVES THIS PALM

ONE OF THE BEST MADAGASCAR PALMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 2G SIZE

The Teddy Bear Palm has become super popular because it grows well in Southern California, has a rusty colored, fuzzy crown shaft, has a silver, ringed trunk and doesn't get too tall.  For most enthusiasts, it's among the "top ten" Madagascar palms.  Mature height is about 25 feet.  Right on the coast it does well with full sun.  Cold hardiness is about 25 degrees F.  Growth rate is medium.  One can grow it in part day sun as well.  The average enthusiast, once he sees a mature plant, just "has to have one".   Expect a mature height in California of about 25 feet or a bit more.  Trunk diameter is usually about eight inches.  The crown shaft is the most prominent trait - fuzzy, rusty red and quite touchable.  The latter trait is why it's called the "Teddy Bear Palm".

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS
TROPICAL APPEARING FAN PALM

COLD HARDY, MEDIUM SIZE
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This fan palm species is known for not looking like an arid or more desert appearing species.  This is because it's native habitat is in the more tropical southern Japanese islands and Taiwan.  It is a lush green palm.  It is slow growing and only gets to a height of about 20 feet although habitat plants can reach 40 feet.  You'll not see anything like that in most U.S. gardens.  Leaves are rather flat and the terminal part of the leaf segments will hang downwards as shown here.  Petioles with age lose their spines.

To get a ten foot plant in our locality may take 20 years.  It can be grown in filtered light or sun.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees F.

YES, WILL PRODUCE BANANAS!

TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

I am not really a fruit tree grower and don't pretend to be an expert on this subject.  But, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to offer on sale a very cool fruit producing banana species.  These Cavendish Bananas are a dwarf species.  They really don't get overhead.  And, they easily make ample amounts of small banana fruit.  They like sun and have a nice cold hardiness to at least 25 degrees or colder.  Most folks in this area have no problem growing them or getting nice bananas.  I also have larger sizes.

ARENGA PINNATA
THE SUGAR PALM

SINGLE TRUNK - MEDIUM TALL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This single trunk pinnate palm is felt to be probably native to Indonesia and gets its common name from the fact that sugar is harvested from the trunks of mature specimens.  This is a tall species and can get up to fifty feet of height.  The trunk is thick, often to 24 inches, and covered with a mesh of woven fibers.  Leave can get quite long, well over twenty feet.  The top of the leaflets are dark green but the underside is silver.  The overall leaf appearance resembles a Caryota but this species is not bipinnate and Caryota leaflets are never silver underneath.    This species likes full sun and is cold hardy into the lower 20's F.  Several mature trees are located in the San Diego area.

LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA
USER FRIENDLY CYCAD
LARGE GREEN CYCAD FOR FILTERED LIGHT OR COASTAL SUN
NO SPINES WHATSOEVER!

I enjoy talking about this species because it is one of my favorites.  It is a large species over time.  I say "user friendly" because this is one of the few cycad species that has absolutely no spines - none of the leaflets, none one the stems.  A leaf brushing across your face feels no more intense than brushing past a Maiden Hair Fern. We have a huge selection of this species.  I am going to show you an assortment of plants.  Below are a few of the main characteristics of this species:

*Large species with trunks slowly getting to over ten feet
*Leaf length typically six to eight feet, sometimes bigger.
*Trunk diameter to 18 inches
*Smooth petiole with no spines
*Great for strong filtered light or full sun along the coast
*Large interesting cones
*Leaflets soft and glossy green in color
*New leaves emerge upward, older leaves lay more horizontal
*Easy to grow

I've found that even customers who say "I only like palms, not cycads" tend to love this species.  Our stock on this species includes 1 gallon, 5 gallon, 15g, 25g, 45g and 24 inch boxes.  It is an extremely easy cycad to add to the garden and always makes an impressive and good sized show.

CHAMAEDOREA HOOPERIANA
SUCKERING, SHADE LOVING
GREAT INTERIOR OR PATIO PLANT

This species was named about a decade ago after a friend of mine and Palm Society member, Luis Hooper.  It is a suckering, medium sized shade palm with thin trunks and prominent rings on the trunk.  Overall height peaks out at about twelve feet.  Clumps do not run.  Leaf color is green and leaf length is four feet.  It is similar to Chamaedorea costaricana but with longer leaves and a fuller appearance overall.  It is an easy species to grow and does great as an interior palm.  I'd recommend filtered light in the garden.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F. or perhaps lower.  We have a good selection of larger plants and very limited supply of smaller plants.  The garden photo below is c/o RPS.

DINING IN THE GARDEN
WHAT'S NICER THAN EATING OUTSIDE
MEMORIES OF MARDI DARIAN

Now deceased and long time friend of mine, Mardi Darian of Vista, California would entertain friends and visitors at an outdoor dining area behind his house.  This garden dining location was enchanting and beautiful.  Nestled right among towering palms and tropical plants, one could take in the panoramic view of the garden while enjoying a fine meal.  All of us should be so lucky.  Mardi really had a great eye for garden design.  He passed away in August, 2015 and has been missed by many plant enthusiasts.

WATER FEATURES IN THE GARDEN
POND, STREAM, POOL, WATERFALL
ALL ENCHANTING AND RELAXING

There's something about having a water feature in the garden that gardeners find very appealing.  I'm not sure if it's the movement, sound or just appearance.  But, people will go to great lengths to make it perfect.  I've had customers create 100 foot long streams, rock mountains with waterfalls into pools, coy ponds,  or simple circulating ponds.  I even had one who put in a volcano waterfall with a large palm being "the flames" of the volcano.  Here I'm showing some photos of more classical usages of water in the garden.  I hope you enjoy them - who knows, maybe you'll get a few ideas.

ASTROCARYUM MEXICANUM
SINGLE TRUNK SPINY PALM
VERY RARE PALM TO FIND
SPINES ON TRUNKS AND STEMS

Astrocaryum is a genus of spiny palms that are native to areas extending from Mexico, down through Central America and into some Caribbean Islands.  Some are single trunk while others sucker.  Astrocaryum mexicanum is remarkable because it doesn't get too tall and is probably the only species of the genus that can be grown in Southern California.  Trunks, leaf stalks, flower stalks and even the seed clusters can be spiny.  Leaves are green with some silver color to their undersides.  The last row of pictures here shows how leaves are silver underneath and the entire plant can appear a silver-green.  It is very attractive and tropical appearing and almost impossible to find at a nursery.  When you get one, I'd recommend growing it in filtered light.  Mature height is typically under ten feet.  The first specimen shown has about ten feet of spiny trunk and would be considered very large for a garden.  The second plant is the last tow is more typical of what you might see in a garden.  We occasionally have small plants for sale when we can get seeds to germinate.  But, they sell quickly and availability is sporadic.  Cold tolerance is probably just below a freeze.

STUNNING CERATOZAMIA SPECIES WITH SUPER GOLD FLUSH
YES, THE LEAVES ARE REALLY A GOLD COLOR
BUT, OVER TIME, THEY WILL TURN GREEN

I wanted to shows you large photos of a truly stunning cycad.  It's a Ceratozamia of some sort.  We're not quite sure what it is.  Ceratozamia latifolia is similar but typically throws emerging brown to red-brown leaves.  We've never had a Ceratozamia that threw gold.  It's amazing to look at.  I've chosen larger photos for this particular post so you get a good look at this plant.  Unfortunately, leaves will predictably turn green over the next month or so.  This plant is about six feet tall in the box.  It has one main caudex about ten inches tall with four five inch offsets.  The next to last photo shows the leaves eventual green leaf color.  BTW, this plant sold immediately after it threw this set of leaves.

HYOPHORBE INDICA
RARE MEDIUM SIZED PINNATE PALM
SLIGHTLY BULGING TRUNK
NICE 24 INCH BOXED SPECIMEN

This is a medium sized, crown shafted, single trunk pinnate palm from Reunion Island.  About thirty years ago, before the days of the Internet and emails, I wrote letters to palm enthusiasts and growers all over the world.  I established a relationship with a fellow in Reunion and later received seeds.  As some know, there is a green and a brown-red form of this species.  I got seeds on both.  Now, most growers agree that the seedling color probably means very little and is just a curiosity point.  At the mature size, they seem to look more similar than different.

Hyophorbe indica gets to a height of about twenty five feet, has a trunk diameter of about six inches, perhaps a bit more, and along the coast demands full sun.  If you grow it in shade, it will probably succumb to rot.  In far inland areas, I would recommend a part day sun application.  Cold tolerance appears to be in the mid-twenties, perhaps slightly lower.  We have a very limited supply presently but do have a few nice specimens.  I'm showing below one in a box that is just about to flower.  Also shown are a few 15g plants.

BUTIA X SYAGRUS
MULE PALM OR BUTIAGRUS
PRETTIER THAN EITHER PARENT
VERY COLD HARDY
TEN DAY SPECIAL 10 GALLON PLANTS

One of the most popular hybrid palms in the world is a cross between Butia capitata and the common Queen Palm, Syagrus romanzoffiana. I wouldn't doubt that the first cross of these two species was serendipitous.   But, when enthusiasts figured out that this cross was not only beautiful but super cold hardy, enthusiasm grew.

It is important that you remember when making a cross, the parent that "produces the seeds" is a critical thing.  The seed-bearing parent is mentioned first when quoting the cross.  If it's a cross between two pure species, this is called an F1 cross.  So, the mule palm is an F1 cross between the Pindo Palm and the Queen Palm with the Pindo producing the seeds.  The opposite cross is not nearly as desirable and just results in a funny looking Queen Palm.

The Mule Palm is unique in that it really doesn't look like either parent.  It is quite tropical appearing and surprisingly cold hardy to about 16 degrees F.  Because of the latter hardiness, it is quite sought after by people in cold areas.  It gives a cold hardy pinnate palm that looks tropical.  This hybrid likes full sun, can even take desert sun in areas like Phoenix, and is pretty fast growing.

Shown here are the 10 gallon size that we're putting on sale.  These can be shipped but it takes a tall box.

CYPHOSTEMA BAINESII
DWARF YET SHOWY CAUDICIFORM PLANT
THICK BLUE GREEN LEAVES
NATIVE TO AFRICA
OLD 15G PLANTS NOW AVAILABLE

Just today we got in five very old 15g plants of this caudiciform type of water conserving plant from Namibia, Africa.  It is sun loving, somewhat cold tolerant (to upper 20's F) but doesn't like wet and cold winters.  Mature height is around five feet.  Leaves are wide, thick and blue-green in color.  Flowers are prominent with the production of red fruit as shown here.  It is deciduous in winter - the time to stop watering!  When the plant loses its leaves, you can see the bottle shaped trunks that may divide or split.  Then, when spring arrives, new leaves are formed.  The lower photos show the mother plant(s) that gave seeds to grow the 15g plants shown here.  This species is similar to Cyphostema juttae but shorter in stature.

Water Requirements:  Moderate
Rate of Growth:  Moderate growing

Comments: These colorful Ti's are propagated in tropical areas and shipped to California.  Most come from HI and FL.  People like them because they add great color to the garden.  Shown here are some nice cultivars we've had in the past few years.  Availability is changing every month.  We've found the darker the colors, the easier they are to grow.

We are always getting in new Hawaiian Ti plants.  They almost always have red in them - sometimes subtle, other times more prominent.  Background colors include black and green.  Sometimes we get in pastel colors.  All are very nice.

BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
STUNNING BLUE MALAGASY FAN PALM
POPULAR, STATELY AND BEAUTIFUL!
NEW ARRIVAL OF GREAT 20 GALLON PLANTS
TEN DAY SPECIAL THESE 20G PLANTS

For several decades we've been growing this stunning blue fan palm from Madagascar.  We've concentrated mostly on the blue form although there is also a green form of Bismarckia which we also have for sale.    However, most enthusiasts prefer the blue form.  Mature specimens in their native habitat reach heights of over forty feet.  It' not certain how tall they'll get in domestic gardens here, but I anticipate about the same.  Trunk diameter can reach 18 inches or a bit more.  Leaf width can be up to eight feet.  This is a very attractive palm and should be given room in the garden to show it off.  It prefers full, hot sun.  Many people in desert locations have found they can grow it.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees, although plants seeing colder have come back from injury.

This plant is a good growing species.  It is sensitive to root damage, so bare rooting shipped plants is not advised.  Most will die.  This also applies to buying Bismarckia by mail order.  Bare root plants usually die.  Fortunately, we ship plants in their pots with soil.  Bismarckia prefers sandy, good draining soil.  The more intense your sun, the more blue it gets.  It is not a good plant for shade.  For more information on this species, check out this link:

The Lady Palm is one species of the Asian genus Rhapis.  Specifically, Rhapis excelsa is from China and is a suckering tropical fan palm.  Plant leaves typically have between five to ten wide leaflets (segments) that have "sawed off" leaflet tips (compared to R. humilus leaflets that come to a point).  Stem diameters are about an inch and heavily matted or hairy.  Mature plant height varies from four to eight feet depending on the variety.  There are rare types that can get taller.  This species prefers filtered light but can take a small amount of sun.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.  It grows well indoors or outside.  The one gallons shown here are not big plants but we've put a few in each pot to give them quicker fullness.  These are easy to mail order.

SPATHODEA CAMPANULATA
THE AFRICAN TULIP TREE
HUGE FLORID ORANGE BLOSSOMS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON TREES

We are fortunate here in Southern California because there are quite a few striking, beautiful flowering tropical trees that we can grow.  Included in this group is the African Tulip Tree with its clusters of large orange blossoms.  This is a sun loving tree that can get fairly large with a canopy that essentially turns an orange-red during it's long summer blossoming period.  It blooms in summer but sometimes longer.  There's a large tree several blocks from the nursery that had blossoms with color from June of last year until October.  Cold hardiness is estimated to be in the mid-twenties F.

Shown here are some seven foot 5g plants.  This species is a fast grower so these trees in the ground will be good sized in just a few years.  They were grown outdoors in a cooler part of our county.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX PURPUREA
THE PURPLE CROWN SHAFT KING PALM
A GORGEOUS PLANT FOR THE GARDEN
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE BAND SIZE

This species of single trunk, crown shafted  palm tree comes from the Mount Lewis range in Queensland, Australia.  My son and I visited this habitat and saw plants in the wild.  I've talked about this species before, but thought I'd summarize a few interesting things you might not know:

• In habitat, it is not the predominant palm species of the locality.  There appeared to be far more Orangiopsis apendiculata, another single trunk species.
• The crown shaft color is never intense purple.  If you Google photos and see this, it's probably been color altered.  The purple is present, but a bit muted.
•As a younger plant, you'll see a yellowish color to the stem and inner crown.  This is a good way to spot it in a nursery plant where the purple crown shaft hasn't developed.
• The purple color will most likely to develop over time after planting and is often not apparent in a nursery plant.
•There is variability in the intensity of the purple color from plant to plant.  Some are more "puple" than others.
• This species and A. cunninghamiana are the only King Palms that have ramenta on the back of the leaflets (see photo).  These are dark hair like structures and you need to look carefully to see them.  But, if you do and the underside of the leaflets are silver, it is A. purpurea
• The underside of the leaflets is quite silver, even more than other species of Archontophoenix
• Cold tolerance of this species is pretty good, about 25 to 26 degrees F., but a little less than other King Palm species.  At one time is was felt to be the most cold hardy King Palm because of its high native habitat.  This is not the case.
•Seeds are among the largest seeds of the King Palm family.
• Growth rate is medium to fast.  Along the coast full sun is tolerated but far inland would do better with part day sun.

Shown here are absolutely huge band plants,  In their pot, some ar4e three feet tall.  They need to be planted or repotted.  These bands are like most nurseries' 5 gallon size!

RHOPALOSTYLIS CHEESEMANII
MEDIUM SIZED, VERY GRACEFUL
BEAUTIFUL CROWN SHAFT
TEN DAY SPECIAL HUGE BAND SIZE

Of the Shaving Brush Palm family, this is the hardest one to find.  And, many think it's the prettiest and most desirable species.  Some consider it to be a variety of R. baueri.  We like to consider it a species.  Native to Raoul Island, an island well off the eastern side of New Zealand, this species has a medium sized trunk and reaches a height of twenty five feet.  The crown shaft is gorgeous but not as swollen as R. sapida.  I have some customers who report the crown shaft being a purple color.  On younger plants, the leaf stems are red colored as shown here.  Cold tolerance is the low 20's F.  It will take coastal sun or consider morning sun or strong filtered light inland.  We're putting 4 year old band size on special.

Just mention this Blog special for this discount.  Like the post above, these plants are equivalent to other nurseries' 5g size.

PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM

SUCKERING, SOMETIMES LARGER PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This species of suckering Date Palm is typically felt to be native to South Africa although other populations have been reported in the Middle East, Madagascar and some tropical islands.  It is an armed palm with sharp spines on its leaf stems.  It loves full sun and heat.  Mature heights are variable.  Some plants only get to about fifteen feet.  But, I've seen plants with a mature height and many stems up to 35 feet.  Trunks average about six inches thick and are covered with fiber.  It is a dioecious palm where both sexes are needed to set fruit.  The bands on sale here are very large for their container as you can see.  These can be easily shipped.  Cold hardiness is into the upper teens F.

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX
SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
HAS RED OR ORANGE CONE

LEAFLETS LIKE HOLLY FERN

TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This fairly rare cycad species is native to the Natal region of South Africa and Mozambique.  It is most known for the appearance of the leaflets - they resemble the leaflets of a Holly Fern.  I would consider this a medium sized cycad as it really doesn't get much trunk height.  But, leaves can be six feet long so it's hard to consider it to be a dwarf plant.  Also notable are the prominently orange or red cones on mature plants.  The photos show this.  Leaf color is green with spines on the leaflets.  Caudex size is usually one, perhaps two feet mature.  It prefers filtered light or a bit of sun.  This is not to say more coastal areas cannot grow it in full sun.  Cold tolerance is 22 degrees F.   The plants on sale are not new seedlings. They are over three years old with caudexes of about an inch.  You might ask "why do they just have one leaf?"  The answer is that, when a large plant fills the band with roots, the amount of soil just can't support two leaves at once.

Pritchardia are a tropical fan palm.  Most do not get overly large and many are under fifteen feet tall.  Along the coast they tolerate full sun.  There are about 25 species with habitats ranging from Hawaii to some South Pacific islands.  We only grow the Hawaiian varieties as they do the best in Southern California where most will take coastal full sun.  Or, grow them in part day sun.  Cold tolerance is in the mid-twenties or a bit lower.

I'm showing you here a whole assortment of 15g plants.  We have about 8 different species in this size.  No other nursery in Southern California has Pritchardias this big in 15g size at the prices we're offering.  All are easily boxed sized specimens.  Some have three to four feet of trunk and are about 14 years old.  All are outdoor grown in sun.  Leaves on some species are totally flat.  Others have a wave to the leaf. Some are colored on the undersides.  There's a perfect Hawaiian Palm for anyone.  These are way too big and tall for mail order but can be trucked.

OCTOPUS AGAVE

TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

This species of Agave in native to northern Mexico with perhaps extension into the U.S.  It is not a large plant.  Mature height is up to four feet with a similar spread of the leaves.  The leaves are thick and fleshy and soft at the end.  There is no terminal hard point to them.  The leaves go out and then curve downward.  They are slow growing, green to blue-green in color.  Culturally, they are xerophytic with low water requirements, are somewhat tropical appearing for an Agave and like full, hot sun.  By the way, they get their common name b/c of their mature appearance (last photo) that sort of resembles an octopus.

"KING KONG" FISHTAIL

TEN DAY SPECIAL NICE 24 INCH BOXES

This very popular palm is favored because or its huge, shade producing leaves.  They can get to fourteen feet long with a twelve foot width.  They are green in color, sometimes a bit mottled in color.  The latter is a nice thing to the eye.  Leaflets are rounded and scalloped at the edges - more liked than other Fishtail palm leaflets that are often "chopped" appearing.  Mature height is up to about thirty to thirty-five feet.  Trunk diameter is thick, sometimes up to 30 inches at the base.  Because of the sizes of these palms, you have to give it plenty of room and full sun.  If it's hot, give it extra water.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F.  It is native to mountainous areas in northern Thailand.

DYPSIS SPECIES UNKNOWN
SUCKERING PLANT
NICE COLOR AT BASE
5 GALLON PLANTS

We have a limited number of an interesting Dypsis species from Madagascar.  We do know this is a suckering plant.  Note the nice red color at the base of the trunk and on some of the petioles.  Also, it has very reflexed leaflets.  I anticipate a mature height of twenty feet.  It should tolerated some sun.  We only have a few of these.  I cannot show a mature specimen as I don't have the exact identification of these plants.

SUCKERING MADAGASCAR PALM
WHITE CROWN SHAFT AND FROSTY TRUNKS
YOUNG ONE GALLON AVAILABLE

Shown below are young one gallon plants of a desirable suckering Madagascar palm that has white crown shafts with white-green, ringed trunks.  It was described about twelve years ago by Don Hodel from a domestically grown plant in Hawaii.  Some feel it is a natural hybrid between D. baronii and onilahensis.  Also, some call it the "White Powder Palm".  Trunk diameters are two to three inches.  A typical mature plant will have four or five trunks.  Anticipate a height of about twenty feet.  We grew these plants from seed.  Recommended would be planting them in bright but filtered light and slowly work them into full sun.  The photos of mature plants are from AL at PACSOA.

DYPSIS SPECIES MAYOTTE ISLAND
TALL, SLENDER TRUNK
SOMETIMES SUCKERING
LIMITED NUMBER 5 GALLON PLANTS

We just got in a limited number of 5 gallon plants of a Dypsis species from Mayotte Island.  This is an independent French island in the Comore chain of islands.  This palm has a similarity to Dypsis cabadae but is not the same.  It is typically described as a multi-trunk palm but many plants growing in gardens still just show one trunk.  Leaflets are thick, glossy green and leaves are arched.  Trunks are bluish-green.  Expect to grow in the coastal sun with an anticipated mature height of 25 feet.  We have only a few of these.

ENCEPHALARTOS HORRIDUS
SOUGHT-AFTER BLUE CYCAD
GNARLY, SPINY AND SUPER BLUE
NATIVE TO SOUTH AFRICA

I just wanted to remind readers that we have a fairly nice selection of 15 gallon Encephalartos horridus available.  This is probably the most popular but yet rare of all cycads.  It loves coastal full sun, doesn't get too large and is brilliantly blue or silver.  Mature height is rarely over six feet.  Leaves are curved and leaflets are very spiny.  The first five photos are of one of the 15 gallon plants we have.  These are quite easy to ship but only within the U.S.  We do have other sizes available but this species is always in very limited supply.

CHAMAEDOREA WOODSONIANA
TALL, THICK TRUNK, BEAUTIFUL
15 GALLON SIZE AVAILABLE

This is a very large, single trunk species that is native to a long range, spanning from Mexico into the northern parts of South America.  it is known as one of the tallest of all Chamaedoreas, reaching heights of possibly over forty feet.  The trunk has a prominent crownshaft and is four inches thick or more.  It's leaves are four to five feet long with a prominent petiole.  Leaf color is a deep green and, in cross section, the leaves are slightly keeled.  In Southern California, this species prefers sun and adequate hydration.  It has been said that this species cannot take a freeze.  More recent reports suggest this species can tolerate temperatures into the upper 20's F.  It is known to be growing in the San Francisco Bay area.  It is a quick grower and sometimes the base of the trunk is swollen.  Shown is our 15g size.  We have limited numbers available.

ENCEPHALARTOS TEGULANEUS
RARE CYCAD FROM KENYA
UPRIGHT LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This is a large Central African cycad with an erect trunk up to thirty feet that is native to Mt. Lolokwe in the center of Kenya.  It is a fairly high elevation plant, up to 2000 feet natively.  As shown in the photos, leaves are four to six feet long and go upwards at about a 60 degree angle.  Color is a gray-green, definitely not a lime color.  The leaves are basically flat in cross section.  Leaflets are thin, crowded and perhaps slightly cupper - and are spiny along the margins.

Like most cycads, this species likes good draining soil.  I'd recommend less than full sun with perhaps half day sun along the coast.  Inland areas would require bright filtered light. At our nursery, this species tolerated 25 degrees F. with no problem.  I suspect the coldest it will take is a few degrees below this.  Although this species is getting near impossible to find, we do have an assortment of sizes available including a large, near coning boxed plant. We are presently offering new seedlings on Special.  These are the first seedlings we've offered in many years and are shown in the first four photos.  I am also showing several other sizes of nursery plants.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII
EASTER CAPE BLUE CYCAD
FULL SUN, NEVER VERY BIG
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE SEEDLINGS

One of the most popular blue cycads that we sell is this South African species from the Eastern Cape region (toward the ocean).  It is a very slow growing species that, in fifty years, is rarely over a height of five feet tall.  So, like the Dioon above, it'll always stay small and not obstruct a view.  The color is intensely blue.  I tell people it's like the color of a clear blue sky after you've thrown in a tiny bit of fog.  The other thing about this species, compared to E. horridus and trispinosus, is that it's much less spiny and very uniform in shape when mature.  Expect a trunk of no more than three feet and a crown width of no more than six feet.  It loves full sun on the coast and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F.

PRITCHARDIA MUNROI
EXTREMELY RARE HAWAIIAN FAN PALM
MEDIUM SIZE - HEIGHT TO FIFTEEN FEET
TEN DAY SPECIAL MASSIVE 3 GALLON PLANTS

This Hawaiian species of Pritchardia is native to the eastern and drier parts of the island of Molokai.  It was named after a botanist who worked their the habitat.  It gets to a height of about five meters with typical leaf width four to five feet.  It has a long green leaf stem.  Essentially all of the Hawaiian Pritchardias can be grown in Southern CA.  The species from the South Pacific are problematical because of our cold winters.  This species takes full sun right along the coast but wants part day sun or filtered light inland.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  The 3 gallon plants on special are absolute huge and massive for their containers.  They are over four feet tall, more like a 7 gallon sized plant.  We have limited numbers this size.  My thanks to friend T.S. for usage of the next to last photo.

TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G PLANTS

At the onset, I might comment that I really don't like Giant Bird of Paradise.  I say this because they are high maintenance plants and can be invasive.  But, people keep asking for them.  So, I brought in a small number of over-sized 5 gallon plants that are quite large and on special.   This species gets to a height of about 20 feet and freely suckering.  The plants on sale here are huge for their pots.  They could be mail ordered.

BUTIA CAPITATA
THE PINDO OR JELLY PALM
GREEN FORM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 25 GALLON

This single trunk South American pinnate palm is very durable and cold hardy.  It loves sun and is cold hardy to about 15 degrees F.  If you've been following our Blog, you know that there is a green form and the popular blue strain.  Both are Butia capitata.  Today I'm showing you the green form.   Most would consider this to be the "standard form".  Mature heights on both are typically15 to 20 feet in this area.  Leaves arch downwards as shown.  Mature leaf color will be green to blue green.  The blue form has definite blue leaves.  The fruit of both are edible and some people make a jelly from the fruit, thus giving a reason for one of the common names for this palm.  Growth rate is slow to medium.  The 25g on sale here are about seven years old. The photos of the mature palms below were taken at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA.

DYPSIS LUCUBENSIS
TALL, THIN TRUNKED PINNATE PALM
FLUFFY, PLUMOSE LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 1 GALLON SIZE

This species of palm is typically single trunk but there are suckering forms.  It is native to island of Nossi-Be off the coast of Madagascar.  It can reach heights of over thirty feet.  It has leaves arranged in three ranks - "tristichous".   Trunk diameter is about 8 inches and the crown shaft is a rusty-brown color and not elongated.  It is a difficult species to find nowadays.  I'd recommend growing it in full sun along the coast.  I'd estimate cold hardiness to be in the mid-twenties F.  We have large one gallons on special.

CYROSOPHILA STAURACANTHA
THE ROOT SPINE PALM
PROMINENT WHITE UNDER LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

This is a thin trunk, medium sized fan palm native to southern Mexico and countries in Central America.  It is mostly known for two traits:  White color on the underside of the leaves.  And, for modified roots that appear to be spines on the trunk.  But, they are not sharp and wicked like one would expect.  This is a very attractive tree.  The large fan leaves are three to four feet across.  The tops are green.  The undersides are almost snow white.

Overall height in Southern California would be about 20 feet. Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It likes part day sun or strong filtered light inland.  Also, it can grow in filtered light on the coast.  We are showing our 5 gallon size which is now on special for 10 days.  But, we may have other sizes available.

BECCARIOPHOENIX FENESTRALIS
AKA "BECCARIOPHOENIX WINDOWS"

LARGER PINNATE PALM FROM MADAGASCAR
TEN DAY SPECIAL RARELY SEEN 15G SIZE

It was not too long ago when Beccariophoenix was felt to be a monotypic genus with only one species.  Now it is recognized that there are three different species:

Beccariophoenix species "windows", presently called Beccariophoenix fenestralis.
Beccriophoenix madagascarensis, previously known as "Beccariophoenix no windows"
Beccariophoenix alfredii, a more recently named species.

All three are single trunk, medium to large plants from Madagascar.  Along the coast, all can take full sun.  Estimated cold hardiness is into the mid and perhaps lower 20's F.  The species we're putting on special is the 15g size of the "windows" variety, B. fenestralis.  You'll not see these around hardly at all in Southern California.  This "windows" form has leaf openings, similar to small window panes, in the leaf - between the leaflets.  With time these disappear and it becomes a pinnate palm.

ARENGA OBTUSIFOLIA
LARGE CLUSTERING TROPICAL PALM
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

You won't find this species available at many places in the country.  It's native to southern Thailand and surrounding areas including Indonesia.  It's a large palm.  In habitat it gets to a height of thirty to fifty feet with one foot thick trunks.  It can have huge leaves over fifteen feet long.  In other words, one leaf is taller than a whole clump of Arenga engleri.  Like all Arenga, the back sides of the leaves are silver.  I'd recommend part day sun or filtered light.  Cold tolerance is uncertain, perhaps into the mid-twenties F.

CHAMAEDOREA STOLINERA
MEXICAN SUCKERING, DWARF SHADE PALM
EASY TO GROW AND BEAUTIFUL
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

I am presenting this species presently because people often confuse it with C. fragans.  It is a suckering species like Chamaedorea fragrans, but the leaves are shorter, thicker in substance and come to a more blunted tip.  They are also much wider.  The leaf surface is a bit wavy and sometimes a bit of a  mottled green color.  And, the new stems emerging do so in a totally different fashion.

It is called "stolinifera" because it forms new "stolons".  These are vegetative stems that emerge from the base of an older trunk.  They then shoot laterally, sometimes below the soil's surface, to reappear a short distance from the mother stem.  They look like "snakes" going over the soil surface.  Often they'll wildly shoot out of the pot, then turn upwards to form a new vertical stem.  This ability to shoot out new stolons often creates a very wide mature clump.

But, then don't get very tall, typically about six feet or a bit more.  Leaves are green in color.  Stems are a quarter inch thick.  This is a filtered light species with a cold hardiness into the low 20's F.

This species is native to mountainous areas in Mexico at about 2500 feet.  We have assorted sizes of stolinifera for sale.  It's a great garden species.  People are easily growing it in San Francisco and cooler areas.  We usually propagate vegetatively and hold back a few mother plants for this purpose.

CYCAS BIFIDA
OLDER 15 GALLON PLANT AVAILABLE
DIVIDED LEAFLETS
SUPER RARE CHINESE CYCAD

I am showing here a cycad that is native to China and very rare and hard to find.  It is known for its divided leaflets.  Off the leaf stem you typically see two leaflets, sometimes more.  Leaves go straight up in the air and are green in color.  This is a cold hardy species that likes filtered light.  Leaf length is typically about six feet, sometimes more in the garden.   Cold tolerance is down into the lower 20's F.  The plant shown here is about twelve years old in a 15g pot.  It'd be difficult to ship b/c of the leaf height.  I only have a few plants of this species.

There is some type of seductive quality to this rare species of Dioon.  I think it's because of the compact, rigid, keeled and curved leaves.  At times they are a bit bizarre appearing - but very appealing.  This is a species that takes on the mature appearance over time.  As a young plant you might think it's a "ho-hummer".  But, as it ages, it develops its traditional appearance and gets more attractive.  Leaves are four to five feet long.  In a domestic situation, a plant with a three foot trunk would be enormous.  It takes full sun and is cold hardy into the low 20's F.

HYOPHORBE VERSCHAFELTII
THE SPINDLE PALM
BULGING TRUNK ABOVE THE GROUND!
MUCH BETTER FOR CO CAL THAN THE BOTTLE PALM!
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

If you live in Southern California, the chances are 99% that a Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) will die in your garden.  They don't tolerate our winter's cold.  If you live along the coast, the chances are 75% that you can successfully grow the Spindle Palm.  Plain and simple.  You might ask why a certain depot type store only sells the Bottle Palm.  It's because the Spindle Palm can't be imported into CA from Florida because of lethal yellow disease.  So, one has to grow them from seeds here in California. And, that takes a long time.  But, that's exactly what we'd done.  So, we can offer you a Hyophorbe with a bulging trunk that you CAN grow and is on sale!

And, the Spindle Palm is easier to grow, gets taller and has a cigar shaped trunk that is super cool.  Mature height in 25 years is about 15 feet.  Peak height is about 20 feet in many decades.  The mature plants below are very old.  This species loves sun.  Cold hardiness is just below a freeze.  The five gallon size shown here are fantastic - very large for their pots with heights of 3 to 4 feet size.  They are ready for a 15g pot.

A COLLECTORS FAVORITE
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON PLANTS

This rare South African cycad is also from the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.  But, it gets larger than the E. arenarius above.  Trunks can reach a height of twelve feet or more.  Leaf lengths are four to six feet with stacking leaflets and minimal if any spines when mature.  Leaves are often curled downward toward their ends.  Leaf color can be anything from a dark olive green to a brilliant blue.  Most plants are somewhere in-between.  It loves full sun along the coast but in desert areas would want a few hours of sun.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F.  When new customers visit the nursery to get a cycad, this is invariably one of the species on the top of their list.  It is a drop dead beautiful plant when grown well.

We're offering one gallon plants on our Ten Day Special.  They are about four years old.  Their mature color will be blue green.

PRITCHARDIA REMOTA
TALL, OVERHEAD TROPICAL FAN PALM
NATIVE TO HAWAII
TEN DAY SPECIAL ONE GALLON SIZE

This attractive fan palm is native to the islands of Kauai and Nihau in the Hawaiian chain.  It lives at about 500 feet elevation or more in dry forests.  There, some plants are found on dry cliffs.  Maybe because of its natural habitat, it does quite well in Southern California.  Plants get up to about 25 feet height with a narrow trunk for their height.  Leaves are green with some divisions of the leaf segments.  Old leaves may form a petticoat on the trunk as shown here.  Fruit is medium-large in size, up to 3/4 of an inch.  Culturally, this species takes full sun on the coast and wants morning sun further inland.  Cold tolerance is down to 25 to 27 degrees F.
The plants on sale are one gallon although we may have larger sizes available.

HOWEA BELMOREANA
THE BELMORE SENTRY PALM / CURLY PALM
THE "OTHER TYPE OF KENTIA"
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5G SIZE

This species of single trunk, "non-crown shafted" pinnate palm is native to medium elevations on Lord Howe Island.  At one time is was possible to import seeds of this desirable palm along with Hedyscepe and Lepidorrhachis.  Because of conservation laws, the island can no longer legally export seeds or seedlings.  This has created a shortage of the more rare species from this locality.

Howea belmoreana is different from the Howea forsteriana (classic Kentia Palm) as it has curved leaves and an umbrella-shaped crown.  It also might be a bit more cold hardy.  It prefers filtered light or a little sun inland and can take more sun right on the coast.  Cold tolerance is about 24 degrees F.  Growth rate, like the Kentia, is slow.  The 5g shown on special here are fairly nice.  They were potted up in early winter from over-sized one gallon.  These can be mail ordered.

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS
A MORE PETITE SPECIES OF THE WINDMILL PALM
SMALL, STIFF LEAVES
EXCELLENT COLD HARDINESS

TEN DAY SPECIAL OLD BAND SIZED PLANTS

This interesting palm, known as the Dwarf Chusan Palm, does not have a well known natural habitat.  Some think it may have originated with a dwarf cultivar of T. fortunei.
It is very slow growing with a hairy trunk.  Leaves mature are about two feet across, stiff and flat and do not flex down at the ends.  A decades old plant may have a trunk under ten feet tall.  It wants full sun and may be equally as cold hardy (down to 15 degree F. or colder) as the common Windmill Palm.  The bands on special are three years old and already showing their fan leaves.

CRYOSOPHILA STAURACANTHA
SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED TROPICAL FAN PALM
SILVER UNDERSIDE TO THE LEAVES
MODIFIED SPINES ON TRUNK
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This single trunk fan palm is native to Southern Mexico and parts of Central America.  It can get up to a height of 25 feet but most garden specimens are under 15 feet.  Two things are quite noteworthy:  First, the undersides of the leaves are a silver-white.  A picture below of a nursery plant shows this.  Secondly, the trunk is narrow and covered with "modified" spines.  They are not real sharp and are not true spines.  The dorsal side of the leaves is green.  This palm likes strong filtered light and right on the coast may take part day sun.  Cold tolerance is estimated to be in the high 20's F.  Growth rate is medium.  The last photo by Tobias Spanner shows a near mature tree.  You have to have an overhead crown of leaves to really see the silver color.

CYCADS WITH UPRIGHT LEAVES
RARE NURSERY SPECIMENS OF GOOD SIZE
SOME AGES 20 TO 100 YEARS!
AN ASSORTMENT OF PLANTS

Many times consumers or businesses want cycads where the leaves go up rather than "out".  This is usually because they have a specific need to have plants with a crown of leaves that is more vertical than horizontal.  Obviously, this keeps leaves from blocking people walking by the plant.  So, with this in mind, we took photographs of some of our cycads with upright leaves.  Realize that many species do this naturally - have leaves with a more upright orientation.  Other species will be upright on their new throws of leaves and then upright leaves relax down as the next swirl emerges.  To maintain upright leaves one would remove the lower, older swirls of leaves.  The photos here are not a complete list of such plants but will give the reader an idea of what I'm talking about.

Photos Shown Below Mostly Taken at Our Nursery:

Ceratozamia robusta, several plants showing upright leaves
Dioon mejiae, several nursery plants with upright leaves
Dioon merolae, a 100 year old cycad with 2 feet of vertical trunk, upright leaves
Dioon holmgrenei, several plants showing new leaves are upright
Encephalartos altensteinii, new leaves on these plant go upright.  Older leaves may lay down somewhat.
Encephalartos gratus,
several plants showing upright leaves
Encephalartos kisambo, note the upright character of the leaves
Encephalartos natalensis, like some others, new leaves upright, old leaves hang down
Encephalartos transvenosus, similar with newer leaves upright
Encephalartos villosus, several nursery plants, all with upright leaves
Encephalartos whitelockii, naturally upright leaves on all these great nursery cycads

ONLY A PARTIAL LIST - ARE MANY OTHERS WITH UPRIGHT LEAVES

As most of you know, we have a great selection of mature rare cycads - probably one of the best selections in the country.  What you may not know is how actively we work with architects on getting these great plants into venues where many people see them.  This includes botanical gardens, theme parks, public plantings, museums, parks, etc.  But, we have enough inventory so that even enthusiasts like perhaps yourself can enjoy them as well.  With over 25,000 rare cycads available, from seedlings to many huge coning sized plants, there's something of every size for everyone.

DWARF AND SEMI-DWARF CYCADS
FOR THE GARDEN FLOOR
AN ASSORTMENT OF IDEAS

A landscape designer on the East Coast has a client who wants to adorn an atrium with small cycads.  They have to be very user friendly, never get overly large, have no spines and be different.  So, we looked around our inventory and came up with some ideas.  Some of these are shown here.  All are cycads.  All of these would be considered dwarf species, none getting much over six feet tall with several under three feet.  Multiple genera of species are shown, each labeled.

PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI
SOUTH AMERICAN COCONUT
LARGER SUN TOLERANT PINNATE PALM

TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE

This rare and nearly extinct species from Bolivia in South America is a single trunk pinnate palm that gets to about forty feet height with a twelve to eighteen inches in trunk diameter.  In its natural habitat high in the Andes Mountains, it sees a fair amount of cold weather.  In domestic gardens, reports of this species tolerating temperatures into the teens have surfaced.  Seeds are huge in size, expensive and germination is sporadic.  And, reports are that seeds are no longer available from habitat.  We are presently offering our nice 15g size on special.

REGULAR PRICE 15 GALLON $250
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15 GALLON $195

Just mention this blog when ordering.  Remember, seeds on this species are expensive, sometimes 2 to 3 dollars each and one typically only gets a small percent germination.  So, this is a super fair price.  This is a full sun species.  Growth rates are medium.  It would be an attractive replacement for the Queen Palm and nearly as cold tolerant.

CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA
ONE OF THE MOST TROPICAL APPEARING CYCADS
SHADE LOVING
MANY SIZES AVAILABLE
TEN DAY SPECIAL ON THIS SPECIES!

This species of rare cycad has always been one of my favorites.  This is because it doesn't get overly tall, has lush green leaves and is a great species for the floor of the garden below canopy.  Its leaves hold a more horizontal position when mature.  So, it does need about an eight to ten foot circle of space to have enough room.  But, what a breathtaking plant it becomes!  You can sneak it between the trunks of overhead plants as shown below.  Presented here are several coning sized specimens so you can appreciate the appearance of this New World cycad from Mexico.

Leaflets are typically six to ten inches long, green in color and leaves are about five to six feet long and gently arching.  Leaves stems have small spines.  An identifying characteristic of this genus are the spines on the cones - unique to Ceratozamia (abbreviated "Cz").   A plant many decades old won't have a caudex more than two feet tall so this species will never be over about 8 feet tall maximum and typically not over five feet.  So, it doesn't block a view into the garden.  Young plants (as shown) are hardly noticeable as this species but mature into larger plants as shown.   This species is surprisingly cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.  It is easily being grown in the SF Bay area.

Rhapis excelsa
is native to Asia and typically doesn't get much over 8 feet tall in a pot.  They do great in shady locations of the garden or inside the home.  They are a very nice patio plant.  Cold hardiness is about 20 degrees F.  They want low dose fertilizer.  Too much fertilizer will burn them.  The plants on special here are 15g size, very full with lots of canes.  They won't last long.

THE GENUS BECCARIOPHOENIX
THREE DIFFERENT SPECIES
ALL THREE TYPES AVAILABLE AT THE NURSERY

It was not too long ago when Beccariophoenix was felt to be a monotypic genus with only one species.  Now it is recognized that there are three different species:

Beccariophoenix species "windows", presently called Beccariophoenix fenestralis.

Beccriophoenix madagascarensis, previously known as "Beccariophoenix no windows"

Beccariophoenix alfredii, a more recently named species.

All three are single trunk, medium to large plants from Madagascar.  Along the coast, all can take full sun.  Cold tolerance is certainly into the mid-twenties F.  Of the three, Beccariophoenix madagascarensis is probably the easiest to grow.  It is very slow growing.  But, some feel that B. alfredii is equally easy and may have more cold hardiness.  "Windows" is exciting because of the leaf openings, thus the name.  But, over time, these windows are lost and it becomes a pinnate palm.

Shown here are pictures of all three.  We have various sizes for sale from small to large on all three species.

BURRETIOKENTIA VIEILLARDII
THE TIGER PALM - STRIPED CROWN SHAFT
ANOTHER SPECIES OF THIS GREAT GENUS
TEN DAY SPECIAL 15G SIZE!

This species of Burretiokentia comes from the highest elevation of the three species of this genus from New Caledonia.  It grows at altitudes of almost 4000 feet.  It has a thin trunk of about six inches and can get to sixty feet tall.  It has a prominently bulging crown shaft that is known for it's diagonally dark markings.  Thus, the name "Tiger Palm".  The crown shaft is reddish-brown in color and has prominent striations as shown below.  Younger trunks are green with rings unless exposed to sun.

The crown of this species is full and round with upright and arching leaves.  Leaf length is about eight feet, leaflet length is three feet and the leaves are flat in cross section.  Some would argue that this species is the prettiest of all Burretiokentia.  Culture is similar to the other Burretiokentia, but I'd give it more shade when young and let it "grow into the sun" rather than starting it in direct sunlight.  As with all New Caledonian species, ample water is crucial.  Under-watered plants do not do well.  Although limited, we do offer various sizes for sale.  I've shown not only nursery plants here but also some mature specimens.  We're putting the 15g on Special

ENCEPHALARTOS CERINUS
DWARF SOUTH AFRICAN SPECIES
VERY SMALL CYCAD
GRAY-GREEN LEAVES
TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE

This rare dwarf species of South African cycad is quite petite and never gets over four feet tall.  Leaves are gray-green to sea foam green and about three feet long.  A mature caudex is six to eight inches.  Below I'm showing a totally in cone mature nursery specimen with a 7 to 8 inch caudex (female)  likes sun and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  This is a rare and sought out species and never inexpensive.  WE do have an assortment of sizes available.

BAD PALM SEEDS?
HOW CAN YOU TELL?
THE FLOAT TEST
THE PINCH TEST
CUT THE SEED OPEN

Many people love to germinate palm seeds and make their plants.  But, there are a few things you need to now right from the beginning if you want to successfully germinate.

1.  Get fresh seeds.  Right off the tree is best.
2.  Pick seeds that are mature, often colorful.  Green seeds germinate poorly.
3.  Remove the fruit from the seeds until you have a clean, often tan colored inner seed.  Fruit can contain chemicals that retard germination.
4.  Pinch test seeds.  Take the picked seeds (with or without fruit) and squeeze hard between two fingers.  They should never collapse.
5.  Float Test the seeds.  Palm seeds almost always sink in water.  Floaters are almost always bad.   Inner cavities of rot within the seed make them float.
6.  Cut open a few seeds.  The fruit should be white or light tan, solid and without signs of rot.  And, you definitely do not want to see inner cavities.
7.  Always soak the cleaned seeds in pure water, especially if you had seeds shipped to you.  This rehydrates them.  If seeds are right off a tree and the fruit is moist and fresh, soaking is not necessary.  But, they would still be cleaned of any fruit.

Photos here show seeds with fruit, the float test with floaters and sinkers and a few seeds cut open showing inner cavities (a bad sign).  For techniques on germination, see our article on
Palm Seed Germination at this website.

I've had customers crate 100 foot long streams, rock mountains with waterfalls into pools, coy ponds,  or simple circulating ponds.  I even had one who put in a volcano waterfall with a large palm being "the flames" of the volcano.  Here I'm showing some photos of more classical usages of water in the garden.  I hope you enjoy them - who knows, maybe you'll get a few ideas.

RAVANALA MADAGASCARENSIS
THE TRAVELER PALM
NEW ARRIVAL SQUAT 15G
IF YOU DON'T FREEZE, LUSH TROPICAL PLANT IN ONE PLANE
TEN DAY SPECIAL THIS SIZE

This is a tropical tree from Madagascar that gets over thirty feet tall.  But, it can be grown in Southern California if you don't freeze.  It gets a trunk about ten inches to a foot wide, brown in color.  The leaves are flat and green, reminiscent of a banana leaf.  This species does sucker.  In my opinion, specimens look best if suckers are removed.  This provides better viewing of the flat plane of leaves that go from side to side.  This characteristic is called "distichous", all in one plane.

Hard wind can tear the leaves.  So, a protected location is probably best.  Cold tolerance is down to a freeze.  Temperatures of thirty degrees or below will "melt" this plant overnight.  It is a good and fast growing species and tolerates full or part sun.  Folklore says to plants the leaves going east to west, i.e. with maximal southern exposure.

We have available two sizes in limited numbers:  the 25g are over twelve feet tall.  The squat 10g are about 8 feet tall.  Both sizes are on sale for ten days.  If you wanted one of these, act quickly because I rarely have them available.

AUSTRALIAN TREE FERN
CYATHEA COOPERI
FAST GROWING, CAN GET TALLER
TEN DAY SPECIAL 5 GALLON SIZE

The Australian Tree Fern in native to several areas on the eastern side of Australia.  It is a faster growing tree fern that can get to a height of over forty feet.  The two photos from my garden in San Diego show potential height.  I have several with twenty-five feet of trunk.  I'm about 8 miles from the ocean and they take my sun fairly well.  Trunks can get up to twelve inches thick although most are more thin.  This species is a bigger alternative to the Tasmanian Tree Fern and has a thicker trunk and longer leaves.  This species tolerates coastal sun or part day sun.  It is cold hardy into the upper twenties or lower.

This is a most interesting "variegated" fern from India.  Originally I thought this was a tree fern from New Zealand, but that is not the case.  This species does not get overhead, clumps and likes filtered light.  It wants ample water during the growing season.  People who see this plant very much like it.  It makes a nice filtered light companion plant.  These can be shipped.

Most people know of the Birds Nest Fern.  It does not tolerate much sun and needs adequate water.  Letting them go dry is hard on them.  We just got in some oversized and nice 1gallon that I'm putting on special.  I'm showing a very old plant from our nursery and a photo of this species growing epiphytically in a tree.  If you do this, just get them enough moisture.  Most know this plant so I won't say much more.

RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CONTAINERS
NURSERY CREDIT FOR USED PLASTIC POTS

I like to remind plant enthusiasts to recycle their plastic containers.  We will take them and give you a credit toward any purchase at the nursery.  Or, if you just don't know what to do with them and are conservative minded, drop them off at our nursery location.  We'll put them to good use.  We've been doing this for decades and think it's the right thing to do for the environment.  We are especially looking for larger pots, 15g and bigger.  We also really appreciate 7g and citrus pots.  However, tiny pots like 4 or 6 inch are not containers that we really utilize.

So, don't clutter the environment by giving them to the garbage man or your local landfill.  Bring them to our nursery.  We thank you in advance!

A Quick Look at Some Cold Hardy Species

ALLAGOPTERA ARENARIA
THE SEASHORE PALM
CLUSTERING, DWARF PALM

This pinnate palm rarely gets over six feet tall, is native to coastal Brazil and has fluffy leaves (plumose).  It's a sun species with a cold hardiness into the upper teens F.

Allagoptera arenaria  Allagoptera arenaria

ARENGA ENGLERI

THE DWARF SUGAR PALM
SUCKERING, NOT TOO TALL

This suckering Asian species doesn't get over about ten feet tall and has silver color to the back of the leaflets.  The leaflets have chopped ends.  It'll take coastal sun and part day sun inland.  Cold tolerance about 18 degrees F.
Arenga engleri Arenga engleri
BLUE BUTIA CAPITATA
THE BLUE PINDO PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT - YES, BLUE COLOR!

This variety of the South American Pindo Palm is super color because of its unusual blue color.  It gets to a height of about fifteen feet in three decades and is single trunk.  It loves full sun and is cold hardy to 15 degrees F.

BRAHEA CLARA
BLUE SINGLE TRUNK MEXICAN PALM
SUPER COLD HARDY

This palm is quite similar to the more common Brahea armata.  It loves sun, takes cold to 15 degrees and is blue in color.  It gets to a height of no more than 20 feet.  Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan Palm, it has longer petioles and is faster growing.  Another curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.  Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more like a bad set of shark's teeth as shown here.
Brahea clara Brahea clara

BRAHEA DECUMBENS

BLUE, DWARF AND SUCKERING
EXCELLENT COLD HARDY SMALLER PALM

This suckering species of fan palm develops a blue color with age and sun.  Shown is a 5g.  We never can keep them in stock to get them to 15g.  They love hot sun, get to a height of no more than six feet and sucker.  this is an ideal palm where views are a concern.  They are very slow growing.

Brahea decumbens Brahea decumbens
BUTIA X SYAGRUS
THE MULE PALM
HYBRID THAT LOOKS LIKE NEITHER PARENT

This surprisingly very cold hardy palm is being grown in areas that routinely see bad weather.  When Queen Palms die in Tucson, AZ, this one survives.  It gets to 25 feet and loves hot sun.  Some say that, when mature, they look a little bit like a Coconut.  It's also a very good growing hybrid with lots of vigor.  It likes sun and is cold hardy to about 16 or 17 degrees.

COPERNICIA ALBA
TALL THIN TRUNK
SINGLE STEM FAN PALM

Copernicia is a rare genus of fan palms mostly native to Caribbean Islands such as Cuba.  This species has a thin trunk and gets over 40 feet tall.  For an exotic genus, it's surprisingly cold hardy perhaps into the upper teens F.  It loves sun and heat.
Copernicia alba Copernicia alba
JUBAEA CHILENSIS
CHILEAN WINE PALM
FATTEST TRUNK OF ANY PALM

This thick trunked pinnate palm is slow growing but manages to get a trunk fatter than any other palm.  Native to Chile, it can reach a height of 40 feet and trunk diameter of 4 feet.  It loves hot sun and is cold hardy to 16 degrees.  The 15g plant shown here is 10 years old.  This is why this species is more costly than other palms.  The trunk is also smooth as shown here with no attached leaf bases.
Jubaea chilensis Jubaea chilensis

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS

THE CHINESE FAN PALM
SINGLE TRUNK, MEDIUM SIZE

This Asian species never really gets to a height much above 25 feet.  It's so slow growing that anything over ten feet seems to take an eternity.  It has a twelve inch thick trunk and flat green leaves.  In most areas it takes full sun but also tolerates filtered light.  Cold hardiness is about 18 degrees F.
lIVISTONA CHINENSIS lIVISTONA CHINENSIS

LIVISTONA DECIPIENS
AKA LIVISTONA DECORA
MEDIUM TO TALL HEIGHT, THIN TRUNK

This Australian fan palm can get over 40 feet tall, has a thin trunk and droopy leaflets.   Because of the latter fact it's known as the Ribbon Palm.  Leaflets hang toward the ground.  It likes full sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It's quite handsome.
Livistona decipiens decora Livistona decipiens
PHOENIX RECLINATA
THE SENEGAL DATE PALM
CLUMPING SPECIES MEDIUM SIZE

This is a type of Date Palm that clusters.  It gets its name from the fact that trunks recline (lean) with age and height.  It has a variable height.  But, you can count on at least 15 feet.  Some clumps get taller.  It loves sun and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.
Phoenix reclinata Phoenix reclinata

PHOENIX THEOPHRASTI
THE CRETAN DATE PALM
BUSHY AND NOT TOO TALL

This Date Palm is native to the island of Crete, southern Greece and some nearby islands.  It is a suckering palm and not quite as tall as the Phoenix dactylifera.  Its dates are not edible.  Leaf color is typically lime green.  Height can get up to thirty feet.  Leaves are quite plumose.  Cold tolerance is about 17 degrees or lower and it loves full and hot sun.

Phoenix theophrasti  Phoenix theophrasti
SABAL CAUSIARUM
TALL FAN PALM
THICK CONCRETE LIKE TRUNKS

This Caribbean fan palm can get rather tall, up to fifty feet.  Its remarkable characteristic are the thick, concrete colored and appearing trunks.  They are really impressive and get up to two feet thick.  Leaf color is blue green.  This palm loves sun and is cold hardy into the mid to upper teens F.
Sabal causiarum Sabal causiarum
SABAL MINOR
THE SMALLEST SABAL
DWARF PALM - SIX FEET TALL

This fan palm is native to the southeastern part of the U.S.  It rarely gets over six feet tall.  It puts out blossoms that are taller than the leaves, producing many small black seeds.  Leaves are sort of large compared to its dwarf height.  It can take sun or shade and is cold hardy to 15 degrees.
Sabal minor Sabal minor

TRACHYCARPUS WAGNERIANUS

SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE
SUPER COLD HARDY
SMALL, CUTE LEAVES

This Asian species of Windmill Palm is quite difficult to find.  That's because it's very slow growing.  The 15g plant shown here is about 8 years old.  They typically don't get tall.  In a few decades, a ten foot palm could be expected.  They love full sun and are cold hardy to 15 degrees F.  Leaves are quite small and flat as shown here.

Trachycarpus wagnerianus Trachycarpus wagnerianus

SYAGRUS SCHIZOPHYLLA X ROMANZOFFIANA

THE COCONUT QUEEN
BEAUTIFUL HYBRID PALM YET COLD HARDY

We don't know as of yet the cold hardiness of this very handsome hybrid palm developed in Thailand.  It's quite a new thing.  It is prettier than both parents.  Anticipated height is 30 feet, so it's shorter than a standard Queen Palm.  It likes full sun and appears to be cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F.
Syagrus schizophylla x Queen palm Syagrus schizophylla x Queen palm by JI

TRITHRINAX ACANTHICOMA
AKA TRITHRINAS BRASILIENSIS
MEDIUM HEIGHT, SPINEY TRUNK

This South American, single trunk fan palm is unlike some of its suckering kin below.  This plant gets to a height of about 20 feet and has a random pattern of long spines protruding from the trunk.  Leaves are green, medium sized.  It likes sun and is cold hardy well into the upper teens F.  The trunk is indeed different - liked by some, hated by others.
Trithrinax acanthicoma Trithrinax acanthicoma

TRITHRINAX CAMPESTRIS
SUCKERING BLUE FAN PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT

This South American species is nothing like T. acanthicoma above.  It suckers, has a prominent blue color and has sharp points on the end of its leaf segments.  But, it is attractive and cold hardy to about 17 degrees F.  Expect a mature height of ten to twenty feet.

GREAT PALM TREES FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Below are pictures of about thirty five palm species that all do well in Southern California.  In the group of palms below,  I left off the most common species that, it seems, everyone knows about.  So, there are no Queen Palms and Mexican Fan Palms below.  But, this group includes species that may be a bit unusual and more interesting.  This is not a complete list.  For instance, within any given genus, there may be dozens other species that do well here.  If I showed every species that you can grow, it would be too overwhelming.  So, I've kept it simple and show representative pictures.  I think, for a starting point, this will suffice.

I have chosen to show mature plants in gardens.  I tried to use mostly pictures from gardens in Southern California to show examples.  Some are from elsewhere.  This provides a quick view of species that you may want to try.  Some are for sun, others for shade.  Some are more difficult to grow than others.  I'm not commenting on each species presently.  But, throughout my Blog, there are comments on almost all of these.  If you don't live here in Southern California, realize that many of these species may live in your area as well.

I hope you enjoy this.  We, of course, have most or all of these palms for sale at the nursery in an assortment of sizes.  And, for your enthusiasts, we probably have several hundred other cool species for you to try.

California elsewhere at this website

PLANT CONTAINER SIZES

For growers here on the West Coast, there are black plastic containers that most of us use on our plants.  Surprisingly, there are differences between the pots used
on the West Coast and East Coast of the U.S.  Here we refer to most containers by "gallon size"  On the East Coast pots are referred to by "diameter in inches".  So,
back East you might find a plant in a "14 inch pot".  Here is might be called a "15 gallon pot".  If you visit our price and availability catalog, plants are shown by their
pot size.  I'm hoping that this Blog post this morning will help clarify what individual pots look like.

CONTAINER SIZE PHOTO EMPTY CONTAINER PHOTO OF PLANTS IN
THIS CONTAINER
BAND SIZE CONTAINER
This pot is 3 x 3 x 9 inches, square in shape.  It is used for seedling plants.  For most growers, it has replaced the one gallon pot.  It is a bit deeper and easier to place in carrying trays.  It also conserves space on benches because these can be placed close together.  You can get a pretty nice plant in a band container, sometimes up to 30 inches tall.
band container chamaedorea in band
ONE GALLON POT
This is a very common pot used, especially by flower growers and those producing small shrubs.  It's a typical first step after germinating a seedling.  We prefer using the band containers above as they conserve table and bench space more efficiently and are deeper.  Diameter of this pot is six inches but it's only about seven inches deep.
one gallon pot plants in 1g pots

TWO GALLON POT
This pot is 7 to 8 inches wide and about 8 inches deep.  It is a nice size to move a band plant into.  But, it is not particularly deep, so you have to make sure the roots fit into the container. This pot will produce an average plant that is about 2 feet tall. We grow a lot of palms in these pots.
2g pot empty plant in 2g oot
FIVE GALLON POT
This pot is 10 inches wide and about 10 inches deep.  It produces a plant that is one of the most common sized palms that we sell.  It is popular because it's not too heavy to lift and plants are typically three to five feet tall, depending on the species.
5 gallon pot plants in 5g pots
SEVEN GALLON POT
We really like this container because it produces a good sized plant but isn't as heavy to carry as a 15g.  But, for some manufacturing reason, this pot costs twice as much as a 15g.  Therefore, most growers aren't buying this sized pot very much nowadays.  It is 12 inches wide, and about 12 inches deep.
7 gallon pot palm in 7g pot
FIFTEEN GALLON POT
This is the most popular sized purchased by people who want a landscape or near-landscape ready size of plant.  This container typically supports a palm from four to eight feet size.  Weight of this size of container with soil and plant is usually sixty to ninety pounds.  It's size is 15 to 16 inches wide and 16 inches deep.  Note how this size pot usually has a nice carrying lip at the top of the pot.
15g pot plant in 15g pot
TWENTY/TWENTY-FIVE GALLON POTS
This is the next size up from a 15g.  These pots are typically about 18 to 20 inches wide and 16 to 18 inches deep.  They weight anywhere from 125 to 150 pounds with their soil.  They can produce a plant larger than the 15g, typically 8 to 10 feet. They usually have a flat lip on the top as shown. The pot shown here is actually a 25g pot.  20 g are a bit smaller.
25 g pot plant in 25g pot
24 INCH BOX CONTAINER
This box is 24 inches wide, square in shape and about 22 to 24 inches deep.  The weight of this container depends on the mix, but is anywhere from 175 to 300 pounds (this heavier weight is if one is using a very heavy soil).  It takes two men to lift one of these.  We prefer plastic boxes as shown here, but they are much more expensive than wooden box.  They last a very long time.
