Description

   

Locality:

Mascarene Islands (E. Africa & of Madagascar Island)

Cold Hardiness: 

32 F.

Trunk type:

Spindle shaped trunk (thin at top and bottom) with a prominent bulge in the middle.  Unique crown shaft that bulges at its base 

Leaf type:

Pinnate (feather shape), leaves that somewhat arch and also twist on their axis (the main part of leaf), a bit.  The latter fact can be used to tell them from the Bottle Palm.  Also, the petiole (leafstalk) is yellow, whereas the Bottle palm petiole will have shades of red.

Suckering/Solitary:

Solitary (single trunk).

Maintenance:

Slow growing but fairly easy, providing you don't get too cold.

Speed of growth:

Slow to medium

Height:

14-16 feet

Soil requirements:

Sandy

Sun Requirements:

Full sun

General Description:

A unique, different and popular palm that should be part of any palm collection, providing you don't get cold.  Its fusiform trunk, silver unique crown shaft, and somewhat short leaves make it a very nice landscape palm. 

Other Notes:

A nice potted palm.  Compare this one to the Bottle Palm, H. lagenicaulis.
