THE ARECA PALM

by Phil Bergman

Description of Article

This article is a brief introduction to this suckering palm tree from Madagascar with the scientific name Dypsis lutescens.  It is an attractive mid-size plant for sun or part day sun.  A link to a comprehensive article on this species is given below.

Introduction

I am writing this article because so many people find the Areca Palm attractive and desirable. The scientific name is Dypsis lutescens.  This is because it never gets too tall, tolerates our local weather in coastal Southern California and has attractive colors.  Please read the information below to introduce yourself to the Areca Palm.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SPECIES: THE ARECA PALM

Type of Palm:  A multi-stemmed (suckering) pinnate palm (feather palm)
Sun Tolerance:  Along the coast can take full or part sun.  Inland areas require less sun.  It would want filtered light in the desert
Mature Height:  In our locality it reaches heights of about sixteen to eighteen feet.  In the tropical it can get up to thirty feet.
Cold Tolerance:  It easily takes a freeze and tolerates temperatures down to about 25 degrees F.
Growth Rate:  Medium.  It is not fast like a King or Queen Palm
Native Habitat:  This species is native to Madagascar and the Reunion Islands
Other Characteristics:  It suckers from the base so one, over time would see trunks of various heights.  However, it does not "run" and will not take over an area.
Landscape Usages:  With its multiple trunks and leaves, it is often sought out as a visual blocking palm species.  By this I mean it's good to hide a neighbor, a fence or a large building wall.  It's the most popular "neighbor blocker" at our nursery.  As a stand alone specimen it is also full and attractive.
