Butia x Syagrus

Common Names:

Mule Palm

Locality:

Man-made hybrid palm

Cold Hardiness:

Uncertain but probably about 20ºs, F or slightly colder.

Trunk Type:

Medium to large single trunk

Leaf Type:

Pinnate, looking between the appearance of a Butia c. and a Syagrus r.

Suckering/Solitary:

Solitary (single trunk).

Maintenance:

Easily grown. Is usually a man-made cross and hard to do accurately. Is known to be infertile seed producer, although there's some controversy over this.

Speed of growth:

Average to fast

Height:

Taller than a Butia, shorter than a Queen (Syagrus r.). Thirty feet of trunk would be a good estimate.

General Description:

A palm that has been hybridized to give people in colder regions a Queen-type palm with more cold hardiness. The leaves a robust appearing, but are recurved somewhat like the Butia. The trunk is often not as smooth as the Queen.
