DESCRIPTION

Roystonea regia

Common Names:
ID:	1536
Locality:	Cuba, Florida, Mexico, and multiple Central American countries.
Cold Hardiness:	28º F.
Trunk Type:	Swollen, thick, gray colored. Often there's a bulge at the base, but sometimes the midtrunk is bulging as well. Can get very thick, almost up to 2 feet plus. Long green crown shaft.
Leaf Type:	Pinnate, 10 foot plus leaves, slightly multi-ranked. The crown usually extends downward past the horizontal midline. Compare with R. oceracea.
Suckering/Solitary:	Solitary
Maintenance:	Easy, if you don't get too cold. Cold dry winds tend to give "frizzle" to the ends of the leaflets. In colder areas, this is a species that can look good at the end of summer and a bit shabby at the end of winter.
Speed of growth:	Fast
Height:	60 feet plus in warm areas.
Soil requirements:	Sandy, well draining. Likes moisture.
Sun requirements:	Full sun.
General Description:	A must for every garden in warmer areas. Nice fat base with a beautiful tall trunk and long crown shaft. Along with the Coconut, this species typifies the "Tropics".
Further Data:	Every palm enthusiast has to have one. In the right spot, this is a canopy forming palm. It adds something unusual, beautiful, and tropical.
