Description of This Collection

Below are photos of about fifty rare cycads that came from a private garden in the La Mesa area of East San Diego. You'll note that, with this presentation, some plants are bigger than you've ever seen for sale. Most plants have been grown in full sun. All plants required digging, many with the assistance of heavy equipment. A total of five days was required to remove and pot up these plants. They were loaded onto a flatbed truck and transported to our nursery. Putting them into pots required a forklift and three days work.

This collection is at least 40 to 50 years old. We acquired these plants because the garden owner took care of these plants well into his 90's but finally time caught up with him and he had to find them new homes.

The most exciting part of this collection are the Encephalartos, and almost all the plants shown in this posting will be of this genus. But, there are also interesting Dioon and Macrozamia and other genera. I hope you enjoy seeing this collection below.

CERATOZAMIA SPECIES SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 8 inches wide, 9 inches tall, 3 inch offset no leaves PRESENCE OFFSETS/PUPS: one RARITY: Unbelievably rare COMMENTS: We and several Ceratozamia experts cannot ID this plant. It has extremely long and wide leaflets. The original owner had it labeled as Cz whitelockiana, which it is not. Of note, the leaves are thick, plastic-like and slightly revolute. Estimated age this plant 30 years. Regular Price: $2500 This plant has sold

CYCAS DEBAOENSIS CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 7 x 9 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is an understory Chinese cycad species that is known for the dividing of it's leaf stems. Its bifurcates to the third order. Leaves tend to go upward and are plumose in appearance. Leaf color is green. This species prefers filtered light and is reasonably cold hardy. Note that this particular plant was removed from a full sun location. This explains the lime green color. I'd recommend less sun. Regular Price: $1200

CYCAS SPECIES CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 4 X 14 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Unknown COMMENTS: In this collection was this Cycas plant with a nice sized trunk and no leaves. DIOON HOLMGRENII CONTAINER SIZE: 5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 3.5 INCHES OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: This Mexican cycad is most closely related to D. merolae but has much longer leaves. It has spiny leaflets, gray-green color to the leaves and loves full hot sun in most areas. The plant shown here obviously was culturally stressed. It needs some TLC. Regular Price: $275

DIOON MEJIAE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 11 x 14 INCHES OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: About a twelve to fourteen year old specimen. Note leaflets are essentially spineless. DIOON MEROLAE BLUE VARIETY CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 4.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very Rare COMMENTS: We usually have regular Dioon merolae in stock. But, only a few times in our history have we had the blue variety. Shown here is a blue one. It's not as blue as the popular South African cycads but definitely is blue. DIOON SONORENSE CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 4 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This rare Dioon from Mexico, specifically from Sonora and Sinaloa. It is known for its narrow leaflets, sickle-shaped leaflets, wide gaps between the leaflets and blue to green color. Leaflet tips come to a point. It's rare and quite sought after. It likes full sun and is cold hardy into the low 20's F. This plant was dug and only has two leaves. It should respond to good culture. Regular Price: $600 This Plant Has Sold

ENCEPHALARTOS AEMULANS CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 22 x 44 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: An extremely heavy and large South African species that is destined for an upscale home or project. It is quite heavy and offers "instant botanical garden appeal". It is a male with two emerging cones. Regular Price: $6600

ENCEPHALARTOS AEMULANS CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 22 x 63 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This cycad is quite the monster in size and is a male. It is larger than most plants of this species in botanical gardens. It almost looks like a small Canary Island Palm. ENCEPHALARTOS ALTENSTEINII CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 7 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African green cycad is native to the Eastern Cape and Natal regions. It makes a very large plant. Trunks can get to twenty feet. Leaves are green and the petiole adjacent to the trunk is free of prickles. It's a good grower and loves coastal sun. Regular Price: $650

*ENCEPHALARTOS BANDULA* CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 27 x 32 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This species is Central African, has green leaves and mature can get five to six feet of trunk. This particular plant was in blazing interior sun. The older leaves are a bit burned but the newer leaves are fine. It is a fairly hard species to find. Regular Price: $5800

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX CURLY LEAF FORM CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 12 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a peculiar variety of this South African species. The leaves are "rolled" like they were forming a tube. It is a collector item and may tolerate more sun than the flat leaf form. Regular Price: $1620 This plant has sold

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX FLAT LEAF FORM FEMALE PLANT CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 18 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This plant was also in a fair amount of sun. We know it's a female because there were quite a few seeds next to the caudex (which I doubt were fertile). The leaflets are wide and green with some armor. Most would grow this species in minimal sun or filtered light. This is a very large (for the species) plant. Regular Price: $2400

ENCEPHALARTOS FRIDERICI-GUILIELMII NARROW LEAFLET SOUTH AFRIDAN CYCAD NICE SIZED CAUDEX CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10 X 10.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African cycad is known for it's tolerance of rugged conditions and narrow leaflets. It is most related to E. cycadifolius , ghellinkii and lanatus. Leaflets are narrow, lime green to gray green in color, often a bit fury. Trunks are stout and up to about five feet. The plants shown here is doing what I've seen before. When it's about to throw a new set of leaves, it stills nutrition from old leaves making them unsightly. This species loves heat and sun. *ENCEPHALARTOS GRATUS* CONTAINER SIZE: 35 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 19 x 38 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Central African cycad is native to Mozambique. It is a fairly large species with trunks up to eight or nine feet. Leaves are green. It tolerates coastal full sun but in far inland locations, a few hours of sun would be best. This specimen is one of the largest of its species that's been for sale in the Western U.S. This is a strikingly attractive plant and is fast growing. Regular Price: $6200


*ENCEPHALARTOS HILDEBRANDTII* CONTAINER SIZE: 35 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 19 x 45 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This large green species is native to Kenya and Tanzania. The plant shown here is a male in cone. Leaves are green and have prominent "pitch fork" spines at their tips. Mature height can be over fifteen feet and leaves can be eight to ten feet long. It'll take sun along the coast but should have part day sun inland. Again, this is probably one of the largest nursery specimens ever for sale in the West U.S. Regular Price: $7600

ENCEPHALARTOS ITURIENSIS SUPER RARE - UPRIGHT LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 6.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This large green cycad species is known for very long, upright leaves that can reach 14 feet. It is from Central Africa. On our previously posted sale in July we listed a very large plant. Along the coast it takes full sun. On almost all plants we've ever had, the leaves go straight up out of the pot. Regular Price: $1200

*ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO* CONTAINER SIZE: 30 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a critically endangered cycad species from Kenya and Tanzania, where it grows at medium elevations in misty mountain habitats. Leaves are a light green, long and upright. Leaflets are minimally armed. Leaves are over ten feet long and trunks can get over ten feet. Along the coast it takes sun well but part day sun may be better far inland. Regular Price: $2800

ENCEPHALARTOS LANATUS BLUE CYCAD WITH RECURVED LEAVES HIGH RISK DIG CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 6.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare because one cannot find caudexes like this. COMMENTS: This is a difficult plant to obtain. It has a reputation for digging poorly. This particular plant had been neglected prior to digging. (not getting watered) We are trying to salvage it. It has a nice, firm caudex. But, we want to see some evidence for recovery. Contact us if you are interested and maybe we can work something out. Regular Price: $

*ENCEPHALARTOS LAURENTIANUS* CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 12 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This intriguing and super rare species is native to northern Angola and southern Congo (Zaire). It is known for have the longest leaves of any known cycad - up to 7 meters long (22 feet). Leaves tend to go upright. Leaflets have peculiar spination that one learns to recognize over time. In habitat, trunks can get quite tall. And, with warmth and humidity, it's a fast growing species. Because of the remote location of natural habitats, it's near impossible to see in the wild. ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII MASSIVE SPECIMEN FOR THIS SPECIES - LARGEST ON MARKET! CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 27 inches wide x 36 inches tall OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African blue cycad is known for it's striking blue color in sun and for the absence of spines on leaflets of mature plants. The plant shown here is probably one of the largest plants of this species I've ever seen. It had leaves when dug but unfortunately they were damaged in transport and had to be removed. But, trust that they were beautifully blue. It had a great dug root ball and is beyond standard botanical garden quality grade. It has a great set of leaves with classic stacking leaflets. I'm showing a few extra photos because it is so nice. It is native to South Africa. Leaf color is green or blue - or somewhere in-between. It is the classic prototype for a whole group of species, all part of the Manikensis Complex. It is a medium sized mature cycad with a trunk of three to six feet, green leaves and leaf length of about five to six feet. Like other Central African species, it can take full coastal sun but inland would prefer part day sun or less. This is a coning sized plant but we don't know the sex. ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS FLUSHING NEW LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 9 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: Repeating above, this green Central African cycad is found at elevation in mountainous regions of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is a medium sized mature cycad with a trunk of three to six feet, green leaves and leaf length of about five to six feet. Along the coast, it likes full sun. Note the new flush/swirl of leaves coming. For whatever reason, this plant stole nutrition from the old leaves to make these new ones. It's probably a lack of fertilizer. Regular Price: $800

ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS TYPE CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Uncertain COMMENTS: This green Central African cycad is undoubtedly one of the species of the "Manikensis Complex". These species are all Central African. Time will tell which species it is. It's a huge plant in a 15g pot. In the ground with good care it should explode and, in a year or two, throw at least six or eight leaves in one swirl. Along the coast, it will like full sun. Regular Price: $750

*ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS* CONTAINER SIZE: 24 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 29 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is the most classic of all the green cycads from South Africa. It is native to the Eastern Cape region where it grows on cliffs and in mountain habitats. It can get trunk that is stout and over 15 feet tall. Leaves are usually five to six feet long, green in color. In most locations except the desert it easily takes full sun. This is a great, very old specimen that has male cones. Regular Price: $4900

ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS TYPE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 13 x 12.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This plant resembles E. natalensis described above. The leaflets are a big different and stacking. It may be a variety we've not seen of natalensis. It'll most likely make a medium sized plant and tolerate coastal sun. It came with no label or ID. Note how it is throwing a new set of about six leaves. Regular Price: $1500

ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS UMBENI RIVER VARIETY CONTAINER SIZE: 35 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE: 19 x 44 inch OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This is a very unusual form of E. natalensis found in the region of the Umbeni river in South Africa. It has short, wide leaflets. Note that the leaflets are a bit plumose (not all in the same plane), unlike other natalensis. This is a super attractive plant and sold the first day we had it. *ENCEPHALARTOS PRINCEPS* CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 19 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is one of the most attractive of all the blue cycads from South Africa. It has overlapping, stacked leaflets toward the distal leaves. Form and cuadex on this specimen were superb. It was one of the first plants to sell. Regular Price: $5250 This plant has sold

ENCEPHALARTOS SENTICOSUS A HUGE FEMALE PLANT MONSTER NURSERY PLANT! CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 22 x 62 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This green South African cycad is native to the Lebombo Mountain Range in Swaziland. Leaves are a glossy green, mature trunk height can exceed 15 feet, cones are yellow and leaves are about six to seven feet long. It is a good growing plant that takes full sun in most areas. This is probably the largest one ever at a nursery in Southern California. It is quite the specimen and, as you can see, dwarfs Alma below in the photos. ENCEPHALARTOS SEPTENTRIONALIS SUPER RARE CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD PLANT WITH FOUR THROWING HEADS OF LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: Four heads, 5.25, 5, 4.75 and 4 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: as above RARITY: Extremely rare! COMMENTS: This species of cycad is next to impossible to find. It has a wide range of distribution through southern Sudan, northern Uganda, northern DRC and a few other localities. But, they are near impossible to visit. Therefore, it is sought after and coveted by collectors. Leaves are green, caudexes are fury and light colored, leaf length is up to about six feet. this species does cluster with maximum trunk height of six feet. The plant shown here is a remarkable cluster of four stems, each throwing new soft leaves. This plant may sell quite quickly. One might rarely see a small single plant for sell, but never four heads at once. Regular Price: $4500 This Plant Has Sold


ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES LARGEST CYCAD IN THIS GROUP NOT SURE OF EXACT ID FEMALE PLANT CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 24 x 65 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This was the largest single plant that we brought in from this collection. We are not quite sure as to what it is. For sure, it's a South African species. The last row of photos shows close ups of the leaflets and the emerging apparent female cones. Note that they are overlapped/stacking. It has a perfect vertical trunk and is two feet thick. It's well overhead and does look like a palm tree above your head. It appears to be throwing multiple male cones. Leaf color is green. The caudex/trunk is perfect. It's a real showpiece. Regular Price: $8900 This Plant Has Sold



ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES A REAL MYSTERY PLANT VERY UNUSUAL LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 6.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Unknown - probably unbelievably rare COMMENTS: You'll find that unknown species - plants that stump you - are the ones growers find most interesting. I think it's because it's like a puzzle. This plant is one of those puzzles. It was labeled as E. ituriensis. Yes, it has upright leaves but the leaflets are totally wrong. Note how they are wide and short with repetitive, uniform spines. This is totally wrong for ituriensis. I tried to key it out but can find nothing. So, it's an unknown Central African species. I think it might become a favorite for whoever gets it. Regular Price: $1300 This Plant Has Sold


ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS GREEN FORM SPLITTING HEAD POSSIBLY BOTH SEXES? CONTAINER SIZE: 24 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x21 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a very interesting plant for several reasons. First, the trunk is splitting at the top with two heads of leaves. It's hard to see this from the photos but it's making two perfect heads of leaves. The second thing is that it appears to have an old male cone in photo #5. But, in photo #6 the new cones appear to be female. Time will tell. Of all E. trispinosus, most are blue. Trunks get way overhead and mature plants look like small Canary Island Palms. So, give it room. It likes sun along the coast. This is a big caudex for a 5g pot. ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES "VUMBA" CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 4.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: I can't say too much about this plant. There is a Central African mountain range in Zimbabwe called "vumba". I assume this plant originated there. It has two leaves and leaflets are wide and short. It is interesting appearing and undoubtedly will be a green cycad. Regular Price: $450 This Plant Has Sold

ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII FEMALE CONTAINER SIZE: 35 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 20 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Central African is known for its super long leaves that go almost straight up. Native to southwestern Uganda, plants are reported with trunks over ten feet tall. Certainly within the U.S., there are no plants with anywhere near this amount of vertical trunk. But, plants do get super long leaves like shown here - 14 feet. this is an extremely large specimen to find for sale of this species. Leaflets are green, narrow in width and armed. This is a good growing species that takes coastal sun but does better with protection inland. This plant had a female cone that fell off during transport. Regular Price: $3300


*MACROZAMIA COMMUNIS* CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 9 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: This is a classic Macrozamia from Australia that has a medium to large mature size. Leaves are flat in cross section without the keel you'd see with M. moorei. Leaf color is green. This plant was dug. Digging Macrozamia carries a risk. So, only time will tell on how it does.
