Description of This Presentation
Below are photos of about a dozen plants that we just got in. The were from a collector about fifteen miles east of Long Beach, CA. All have only been grown in their pots outdoors. The interesting thing is the size of the plants relative to their containers. This is a good thing for people who wish to do mail order and want to save on shipping. Two plants had to be put in 25g size because their pots had been torn apart by roots. Almost all of this collection are Encephalartos.

*CYCAS THOUARSII* Container: 7 gallon pot Caudex: 5 x 15 inches Comments: This popular species is native to Madagascar and can, in many decades, get ten to twenty feet tall. It'll take coastal sun. This plant has a good sized trunk, nice leaves. Great starter specimen Regular price $675

ENCEPHALARTOS WOODII HYBRID Container: 15 gallon pot Caudex: 14 inches Comments: The seller didn't know the parents of this obvious E. woodii hybrid. After study, we think it's an E. longifolius seed-bearing parent. The leaflets are stacking, loaded with white hairs and this gives a slight blue color in the sun. Leaves are also recurved. ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO Container: 2 gallon pot Caudex: 8 inches Comments: This plant has to be one of the larger 2 gallon plants we've every had. Notice the long, upright leaves with the classic leaflets for this Central African species. Regular price $850

*ENCEPHALARTOS LEBOMBOENSIS* Container: 2 gallon pot Caudex: 9 inches Comments: This South African cycad is another huge plant in a small container. The caudex is wider than the container and is "growing out" of the pot. It'll be only medium size mature, takes full sun and has green leaves. Regular price $900 This Plant has Sold

*ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS* Container: 25 gallon pot Caudex: 12.5 x 12 inches Comments: This Central African cycad has green leaves, is a good grower, takes full sun and shouldn't have more than four feet of trunk mature. It required repotting as its container was torn. It's a very nice, rather large specimen. It is coning size but we don't know the sex. Regular price $1800


*ENCEPHALARTOS TRANSVENOSUS* Container: 5 gallon pot Caudex: 9 inches Comments: This South African green cycad needs room in the garden. They, in a few centuries, actually take on the appearance of palm trees with a husky trunk. It takes full sun and is fast growing. Regular price $900


*ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS* Container: 15 gallon pot Caudex: 7 inches Comments: This popular blue South African cycad never gets very large. Along the coast it takes full sun and is fairly cold hardy. It's known for its prominent blue color and barbed leaflets. This is a superb specimen with lots of leaves and character. *ENCEPHALARTOS VILLOSUS* Container: 25 gallon pot Caudex: 12.5 x 9 inches Comments: This South African cycad never forms any vertical trunk, tends to have upright green leaves and has narrow leaflets. It does well in part sun along the coast and is a favorite for filtered light growing inland. Females have gold cones. This is a known male. You can see the cone stalk. The cone fell off in transport. Note that leaflets are narrow and barbed. This plant required repotting into a 25g pot b/c it's container was ripped apart because of caudex size. *ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII* Container: 5 gallon pot Caudex: 9 inches Comments: This is a very popular Central African cycad. Please see description of the species in the lead article above in today's Blog. Its leaves are long and green with narrow leaflets, the leaves are upright and growth rate is fast. Along the coast it takes full sun - far inland, part day sun is better. This is a great species named after Lauran Whitelock from Los Angeles. Regular price $1300


*LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA* Container: 5 gallon pot Caudex: 7.5 inches Comments: This spineless and user friendly cycad is native to Australia. It will take at least half day sun along the coast and likes filtered light far inland. Leaves are shiny, green and long. It needs room to grow and, in many decades, gets an overhead trunk. It is very lush and tropical appearing. This is a great mail order plant (huge for its 5 gallon container) because of the small pot size. It should explode with growth in the ground.
