LARGE PRIVATE CYCAD COLLECTION
The cycads shown below were a complete private collection
of cycads that was
obtained by Jungle Music in the late spring, 2015. All were outdoor grown in full sun in
Orange County, CA and
of very large size as you will see below. Most were dug and
placed into containers. All are for sale and by the time you
read this, some may have sold from this offering. But, I am
sure, many remain for sale. Any or all
of these specimens can be shipped or delivered right to your garden or
home. We cannot ship them internationally. Container sizes
range from 15g to 45 gallon containers and 24 inch boxes. All are
presently being grown outdoors. They are being presented in
random order. Note: On May 7th we purchased another smaller collection of very large plants and these have been added to this list below. This includes massively large Encephalartos. In particular, check out the last two plants below. |
CYCAS THOUARSII MADAGASCAR CYCAD TEN FOOT SPECIMEN This quick growing cycad has upright leaves with minimal armor. This specimen is in a 45 gallon tub. It has a vertical height of six feet caudex on the main trunk with two other trunks two to four feet tall. All trunks have crowns of leaves but the primary trunk has a full head of five to six foot leaves. This plant is over 20 years old. It takes sun along the coast or part sun further inland. Cold hardiness is down to the low 20's F. |
ENCEPHALARTOS HORRIDUS CLUSTER OF THREE MAIN CAUDEXES PLUS THREE PUPS, GREAT COLOR This South African species is native to the Eastern Cape district and loves sun and heat. Plant stems never get too large. A three foot caudex would be a century old. This cycad has three large caudexes. The main stems of this plant are nine, ten and thirteen inches, nicely separated It also has about 3 additional pups 4 inches in size. It's in a 24 inch box. Cold tolerance is into the very low 20's F. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
LONGIFOLIUS BLUE LARGE OLD DOUBLE GORGEOUS LEAVES, LARGE PLANTS This species is also South African and from Natal. This plant is in a 45 gallon pot. Each caudex is about 18 inches. Leaves are strongly keeled, overlapping and quite blue in color. this is a gorgeous plant that wants sun and will go down to about 22 degrees F. From side to side at the caudex level, the stems are three feet wide. It's a monster! |
DIOON MEJIAE 25 YEAR OLD PLANT MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA This exotic Dioon species is different from most others. Mature, it has no spines and wide leaflets. It is most similar to Dioon spinulosum and rzedowskii. This plant's in a 24 inch box, has a caudex 13 inches tall and has been grown in full, hot sun. It's a real beauty. |
' |
DIOON MEROLAE SOUTHERN MEXICAN SPECIES THIRTY YEAR OLD SPECIMEN This sun loving species is in a 24 inch box. It has a caudex that is 13 inches wide and about 20 inches tall. It has gray-green foliage with tightly spaced leaflets that overlap. Leaves are four feet long. This is a compact and super attractive cycad. Cold tolerance is to the low 20's F. |
DIOON
SPECIES PROBABLY VAR. RIO PESCADO 25G, CAUDEX 9 X 16 INCHES This cycad was also from a So Cal collection, growing in full hot sun and dug. Its age is estimated at 30 years. After looking carefully at this plant, we feel it is most likely the "Rio Pescado" variety of Dioon edule. It has yellow petiole and rhachis and the leaves are long and arching. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
CAFFER A SOUTH AFRICAN DWARF CYCAD FULL 15G PLANT WITH AGE I thought I'd show you a much smaller, dwarf species. Even though this plant is not too large, it's almost as big as this species gets. It has a six to seven inch caduex. That's not too far from a maximum size of about 8 inches. The plant shown here is in a 15g pot. It is coning size. Note that is the plumose leaf form of this species. It enjoys full sun. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
ARENARIUS CLUSTER OF THREE CAUDEXES 24 INCH BOX SPECIMEN This species is also South African and from the Eastern Cape. It likes coastal sun but can take part sun inland. The plant shown here is an old specimen that has clustered into three or four caudexes. Leaflets look sort of like an E. horridus but are green. A large plant would have two feet of trunk. The caudexes on this one are 5, 11 and 12 inches with a smaller one coming on. It's a very full specimen. |
ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD MONSTER 24 INCH BOX This plant makes a medium sized trunk up to six or eight feet. But, the crown of leaves can be huge as shown here. The trunk of this plant is 18 inches tall and about 12 inches thick. It has six to seven foot green leaves. For a nursery, it's a massive plant. This is a sun species in our locality. Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F. |
ZAMIA
SPECIES OLD MATURE MALE CLUMP TONS OF MALE CONES This plant was in part day sun and was dug. It is about 20 years old. It obviously is a semi-dwarf species. Leaves are about 30 inches long. The plant is a cluster of coning caudexes. Each caudex is about four to five inches thick. There must be at least a dozen stems. We initially thought this was a Z. floridana but are not quite sure. The seller couldn't recall what it was when he bought it. I'd recommend filtered light for this plant. |
ENCEPHALARTOS LEHMANNII MATURE CLUSTERING SPECIMEN UNBELIEVABLY BLUE CYCAD! This species is native to the Eastern Cape District in the Republic of South Africa. It is one of customers' most popular species. It's not as spiny as E. horridus or trispinosus. It loves sun and heat. Desert areas would utilize part day sun. This cluster is in a 24 inch box. The primary caudex sizes is 15 inches along with additional 8 & 5 inch offsets plus smaller pups. Cold tolerance is 22 degrees F. This plant is one of the prettiest that we got. It has unbelievably nice blue color. |
ENCEPHALARTOS ALTENSTEINII LARGER GREEN SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD HAS TRUNK OVER TWO FEET TALL This plant is a monster right now and will only get bigger. Its leaves are green and the bases of the petioles are un-armed. This is a characteristic of this species. It's in a 24 inch box. Trunk diameter is 16 inches and height is 25 to 26 inches. It is a full sun species. Give it room as it's going to get bigger. It has no offsets. It can be shipped. |
DIOON EDULE FULL SUN MEXICAN CYCAD 25 YEAR OLD CONING SIZED SPECIMEN This is the only cycad species that can be grown in desert areas in full sun all year long. It's remarkable for this talent but also for the fact that it may be the world's most cold hardy cycad species. This plant is over 2 decades old and in a 25 gallon pot. It has a caudex that is 13 inches wide and 15 inches tall. Typically this species never gets a trunk over 20 inches. So, this is about as big as it'll ever get. It has a smaller crown of leaves with a crown diameter under six feet. Note that it has not suckered in all its years. Compare this to the specimen below that's suckered light crazy. Why some Dioon edules sucker and others don't is a mystery. It is probably just genetics or something to do with the traits of the native habitat colony. In any case, the difference between this plant and the one below is remarkable. |
DIOON EDULE
CLUSTER MANY SMALLER CAUDEXES IN ONE BOX HAVE MATCHING MALE AND FEMALE SPECIMENS I'm showing this plant here to compare it with the single trunk specimen above. It's loaded with quite a few indidual stems that are offsets from the primary and orignal caudex. It fills this 24 inch box. Note that the leaves are shorter on this suckering specimen. It is fuller with leaves but more compact. It obviously wants full sun and will never take up too much room in the garden. When I purchased this plant it came with a matching plant of the opposite sex. It'd be nice if someone would keep this pair together. They are a matched pair and very similar in appearance. |
DIOON PURPUSII AMAZINGLY RARE MEXICAN CYCAD HUGE SPECIMEN IN A 25G POT This is one of the most sought after Mexican cycad species. I don't know if one this large has ever been offered for sale from a nursery. It is in a 25g pot, has a 13 to 14 inch caudex and is absolutely stunning. Note the keeled leaves. They have small spines. This is a full sun species and never gets overly tall. It should take temperatures down into the low 20's F. This one won't last long. Sorry I don't have more photos on this rare species but we were rushed in putting away this huge collection. So, we cut it short of photos of some plants. |
DIOON RZEDOWSKII TALLER MEXICAN CYCAD EXTREMELY RARE IN NUSERIES LARGE BOXED SPECIMEN This Mexican cycad is similar to Dioon spinulosum and mejiae except the base of the petioles is typically bare of prickles and the leaflets have no spines. It can get up to over ten feet tall. Leaf color is green. Right on the coast it can take full sun. Other areas require filtered light. This 25 year old plant has a cuadex of 14 inch diameter and 25 to 26 inch height. I've never seen one this large offered for sale. It's in a 24 inch box. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
KISAMBO RARE KENYAN CYCAD GREAT 24 INCH BOX SPECIMEN This species is quite rare and native to mountainous areas of Kenya. Trunks can get over ten feet tall and leaves are typically up to eight or ten feet long. Leaf color is green, sometimes a bit of a lime-green. It prefers part day sun in most areas but can take full sun right on the coast. The plant shown here has a 17 inch caudex and is in a 24 inch box. Note the upright leaves on this specimen. |
ENCEPHALARTOS PRINCEPS MOST SOUGHT AFTER OF THE "BASIC BLUE SOUTH AFRICAN CYCADS" GORGEOUS HUGE SPECIMEN There are four blue South African cycads that are considered the "basic blues". This includes Encephalartos horridus, trispinosus, lehmannii and princeps. Of this group, the hardest to find is E. princeps. The specimen shown here is a gorgeous specimen in a 24 inch box. It has a 12 inch by 16 inch main stem with a pup. The blue color is outstanding. You never see a plant like this for sale. Native to the Natal District, this species loves heat and sun. Cold tolerance is 22 degrees F. This one will sell soon. |
DIOON
CALIFANOI VERY OLD SPECIMEN WITH SEVEN OFFSETS LARGEST SPECIMEN WE'VE EVER HAD This extremely rare and endangered species is native to Oaxaca and surrounding areas in Mexico. It can, in centuries, get an eight foot tall trunk. It has deeply keeled leaves and is green to gray-green in color. The specimen shown here is in a 45g pot and is, without a doubt, one of the largest of this species ever offered for sale. It has a main trunk that's almost 20 inches tall. It has seven huge pups, each up to ten inches. It took a 45 gallon pot to hold this beauty. It prefers full sun along the coast and is cold hardy down to the low 20's F. Because of it's size and age, this plant will be one of the first to be sold. |
ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS MASSIVE PLANT IN 24 INCH BOX INTENSE BLUE COLOR Of the "basic four" blue cycads discussed above, this is another of that group. It is South African and loves heat and sun. This specimen is in a 24 inch box and has a caudex of 16 to 17 inches. It has a perfectly formed caudex. Interestingly, this plant has no pups. It would make a great centerpiece cycad. Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F. Color is an intense blue. |
DIOON TOMASELLII EXTREMELY RARE MEXICAN CYCAD FALCATE GREEN LEAFLETS This hard to find species of Mexican cycad is native to western Mexico with populations going almost to the Pacific coast. It is not a large plant with trunks to about three feet. Leaves are four to six feet long. The interesting thing is the deflexed or falcate leaflets. This means that they flex downwards a bit. Leaf color is green, sometimes limey green when in sun. Usually collectors have to buy seedlings of this species and then wait ten to twenty years to see a plant of any size. This plant is in a 25 gallon pot and has a caudex of ten inches with two pups. I'd recommend part day sun or perhaps full sun on the coast. This is a very unusual specimen. |
DIOON
MEROLAE 25G WITH 20 INCH TALL TRUNK GRAY-GREEN LEAVES This nice specimen of Dioon merolae likes heat and sun along the coast. In desert areas, put it in part day sun. Estimated age of this plant is 25 years. Note the tightly spaced and armed leaflets. Although century old plants can get ten feet of trunk, anticipate in a lifetime no more than six feet of trunk height. The crown is not that large, so this is a nice cycad you can be guaranteed you'll probably always be able to see above. For folks with nice views, this is imporant. This is a rare species and size to see for sale. |
ENCEPHALARTOS SCLAVOI CRITICALLY ENDANGERED CYCAD FROM TANZANIA MALE PLANT IN CONE In the wild, it is estimated that only fifty specimens of this species still exist. It lives on rocky mountainous outcrops at high elevation, above a mile. Leaves are four to six feet long and leaflets are sometimes cupped. Color is green. The specimen shown here has three male cones. Anticipate a mature trunk height of three feet. The caudex size of the plant offered here is sixteen inches. It does have a pup. It's in a 24 inch box. Although not quite as cold hardy as South African species, this Tanzanian cycad can tolerate temperatures into the lower 20's f. It'll take full coastal sun but should have some protection far inland. You'll not find another specimen around like this for sale. |
ENCEPHALARTOS FREDERICI-GUILIELMII THIN LEAFED BLUE GREEN CYCAD VERY COLD HARDY AND DIFFERENT This South African cycad is almost never seen available in the size shown here. This plant has a twelve inch caudex. It has classic thin leaflets. Leaf color is blue to blue-green. Crowns of leaves are not overly large. It loves sun and heat and want full sun along the coast. Cold tolerance is almost down to 20 degrees f. The container size on this plant is 25g. Leaf lenth of this species is about four feet although trunks can get over ten feet tall in centuries. Of note, collectors call this species "EFG". |
DIOON EDULE
TYPE CLUSTER 24 INCH BOX LONG LEAVES I'm showing this clustered out variety of Dioon edule in a 24 inch box. Leaf color is green. But, the leaves on this specimena re quite long. There are many stems in this cluster, some large, some small. It'll fill an area six to seven feet wide. It wants full sun, perhaps even in the desert. |
ENCEPHALARTOS LANATUS BLUE, THIN LEAFLET SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD LOVES HEAT AND SUN The plant shown here is in a 25 gallon pot and has an eight inch caduex. This species is slow growing, so it's rare to see one offered htis size. The species is known for its very thin leaflets, curved leaves and blue to blue-green leaf color. New throws of leaves are the most blue. Stem height is four to seven feet. Leaf length is four to five feet. This plant takes temperatures below the mid-twenties F. and likes full sun in most areas. |
DIOON MEJIAE ALMOST TWO FEET OF TRUNK SUN GROWN This outstanding and thirty year old specimen is in a 25g and has very upright leaves. The caudex is 16 inches x 22 inches. Leaves are six feet. It's been grown in sun and leaves are still quite green. New leaves will emerge soft, wooly and furry. In inland areas, I'd recommend part day sun. Filtered light, if storng, is ok too. Of note, this is a slow growing species. Note, in the container, this plant seems to be almost ten feet tall. |
ENCEPHALARTOS PRINCEPS 25G SPECIMEN SMALLER THAN THE PLANT ABOVE BUT STILL SUPER NICE Compared to the first post in today's thread, this plant is smaller. But, it still has a ten inch wide and tall caudex. color is a very nice blue and leaf form is classical. The caudex is perfect. It wants full sun in almost all areas and will survive down to 22 degrees without protection. It's in a 25g container and can be easily shipped. |
ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS 25G CONTAINER, 14 INCH CAUDEX NICE BLUE COLOR Shown here is anothe South African blue cycad, E. trispinosus. this plant has nice form, is in a 25g pot and has about a 14 inch caudex that has perfect form. It likes sun and heat in most areas. |
ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS HUGE 16 INCH MAIN CAUDEX TONS OF SUCKERS NICE BLUE FORM IN BOX This south aftican cycad with all its suckers was so large that we had to put it in a 45 gallon container. It has about 15 offsets. The main caudex is about 16 inches. The photos don't show it well, but this is a huge plant. It wants full sun and is cold hardy to the low 20's F. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
FEROX 16 INCH FEMALE PLANT HAS PREVIOUSLY SET SEEDS This is about as large as an E. ferox gets. This one has a 16 to 17 inch caudex. Old seeds were found near its base when we dug it. Unfortunately, the previous owner cut back the leaves for some unknown reason. So, it's a bit lopsided. But, it should throw out a new set of fifteen or more leaves soon. |
ENCEPHALARTOS ALTENSTEINII FEMALE PLANT IN CONE 36 INCH CAUDEX, 45G CONTAINER This is one of the larger Encephalartos that we've ever offered for sale. It was dug from the second private collection we obtained. It has a caudex that is about 17 inches thick and 35 to 36 inches tall. It is a female. The two cones shown below were removed on purpose as we knew they'd snap off during digging and transport. This is a botanical garden quality plant for sure. You'll not see many like this one around. It can be shipped by pallet/private trucker. |
ENCEPHALARTOS
NATALENSIS 36 INCH TALL TRUNK 45 GALLON CONTAINER In that second collection we got this massively large e. natalensis. It is actually heavier and fatter than the plant above. It has a trunk diameter of 18 inches or more. We don't know the sex for sure on this cycad. It's in a 45 gallon container is is extremely heavy. It can be shipped on a pallet by truckers. It was grown in full hot inland sun in Southern California. |
