Some Plants Forty Years Old!

Description Of Collection

On January 4, 2017 we took possession of a small private collection of extremely old cycads from an established garden in the Palos Verdes area in Southern California. The owner had passed away after four decades of avid collecting of rare cycads. Most of the plants were container grown although a few needed to be dug from the garden. We repotted some of the containerized plants into new containers as they appeared to need it. Some we left in their original fiber glass pots. Many are the largest sized plants of their species that our nursery has ever had. There were also a good number of Sago Palms (Cycas revoluta) which I am not showing here. Unless already sold, all are available. Prices, container size, caudex sizes and comments are shown below.

You'll not that some of these plants show signs of cultural neglect as the collector didn't have the energy to water in the tail end of his life. Also, on some plants, leaves were lost on removal. Also, there were about a dozen or so plants that had no leaves and will need to flush before we know for sure what they are. This collection was grown by E. R. from Palos Verdes Peninsula. I was contacted by his loving daughter who wanted to make sure that these plants were well cared for and found their way to an appreciative enthusiast who would offer them fine culture as her father had for many decades.

DIOON ANGUSTIFOLIUM 25 GALLON CONTAINER FEMALE IN CONE CAUDEX SIZE 11 INCHES WIDE BY 12.5 INCHES TALL PRICE $1575 This plant has sold Comments: Estimated 30 year old plant near absolute mature size. Female cone present. Very thin leaflets. Very cold hardy.


DIOON EDULE CONTAINER SIZE 25 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE 11 INCHES WIDE, 15.5 INCHES TALL PRICE $1650 This plant has sold Comments: Another very old plant estimated at 40 years old. Do not know sex. Has thinner leaflets. Is one of only cycads that will take full desert sun and is very cold hardy for a cycad.


DIOON SONORENSE CONTAINER SIZE 25 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE 11 INCHES WIDE, 13.5 INCHES TALL PRICE $4500 This plant has sold Comments: Habitat locality is northern Mexico in a hot, dry area. Extremely rare and sought after. This is the largest of this species we've ever had. Has blue leaves in full sun. Very gorgeous plant.


DIOON SPINULOSUM CONTAINER SIZE 25 GALLON FIBERGLASS POT CAUDEX SIZE 13.5 INCHES WIDE BY 35 INCHES TALL PRICE: $3600 This plant has sold Comments: Forty year old specimen, one of the largest we've ever had on this species. Nice curve to the trunk. Would prefer less than full sun although this collector grew this plant in full sun (close to the ocean). It's near impossible to find a specimen for sale of this size.


ENCEPHALARTOS ARENARIUS (CONFIRMATION NEEDED WITH NEW FLUSH OF LEAVES) CONTAINER SIZE 25 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE 8.5 INCHES PRICE: $1100 Comments: This plant only had one leaf. I think this is from lack of water. The caudex is firm and round. I've shown a good number of detail leaflet shots as it's not the typically seen form of E. arenarius. The back of the leaflets are prominently veined. We may hold this plant back for a complete new flush of leaves.


ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS POSSIBLE CROSS WITH E. WOODII CONTAINER SIZE 24 INCH BOX CAUDEX SIZE 14 INCHES WIDE BY 8 INCHES TALL PRICE: $1800 Comments: This collection had no labels on the plants. So, we needed to determine which species there were. This is obviously a natalensis. But, it's a bit different with very appealing shorter and wide leaflets. Some of the proximal leaflets suggest perhaps it's a hybrid with E. woodii. We cannot be sure of this plant's parentage. It will be a full sun plant and is very pretty.


ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS CONTAINER SIZE 24 INCH BOX CAUDEX SIZE SPECIMEN - 15 INCHES WIDE BY 15 INCHES TALL PRICE: $3800 Comments: This was one of the nicest plants of the collection and is super blue. It is a nice form that has classical and prominently lobed (spiny) leaflets. It was container grown and not dug. It was moved into this box as we felt it needed more root room. It wants full sun along the coast and has an estimated age of 30 years.


ENCEPHALARTOS TRISPINOSUS CONTAINER SIZE 25 GALLON FIBERGLASS POT CAUDEX SIZE SPECIMEN- 14.5 INCHES WIDE BY 20 INCHES TALL WITH 4 INCH PUP PRICE: $4250 Comments: This is a fantastic specimen of this species with a very nice, old trunk with a healthy pup that should throw leaves soon. Its leaflets are not as spiny as the specimen above but it is larger. Leaf color is also blue, especially in full coastal sun. Estimated age 40 yeas from seed.


LEPIDOZAMIA HOPEI CONTAINER SIZE 24 INCH BOX CAUDEX SIZE 10 INCHES WIDE BY 13.5 INCHES TALL PRICE: $1600 Comments: This is the more rare form of Lepidozamia. Seeds are essentially non-available nowadays. You'll note that the leaflets are much wider than L. peroffskyana below. It makes a large plant with long, shiny green leaves and prefers part day sun.


LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA CONTAINER SIZE 45 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE 17 INCHES WIDE BY 41 INCHES TALL PRICE: $3800 Comments: This is the largest Lepidozamia peroffskyana we've ever offered at the nursery. I'd estimate the age at 40 years. It only had two leaves when it was dug. With good culture, I'd suspect it'll throw new swirls of fifteen or more leaves within a year or two. It'd prefer part sun and needs lots of room to grow. In a few centuries it'll be above the average home as this species can get trunks over twenty feet tall.


ZAMIA FURFURACEA CONTAINER SIZE DEEP 25 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE CLUSTER OF MULTIPLE STEMS -AT LEAST FOUR PRICE: $475 Comments: This is an attractive clone of this durable Zamia. I'd estimate age at 30 years. It has rather wide leaflets with essentially no spination. It would prefer part day sun or strong filtered light.
