Description of This Collection

Below are photos that show the many cycads brought in with the fourth part of this huge this collection from the La Mesa area of East San Diego. Most plants have been grown in full sun. All plants required digging, many with the assistance of heavy equipment. Weeks of labor were required to remove, transport and repot all of these plants. They were loaded onto a flatbed truck and transported to our nursery.

This collection has many plants that are at least 40 to 50 years old. But, as a collector, the owner kept adding species into his old age. We acquired these plants because he took care of these plants well into his 90's but finally time caught up with him and he had to find them new homes. Some plants were under stress, mostly from lack of water. It's taken months of work with heavy equipment to remove all of these plants.

The most exciting part of this collection are the Encephalartos, but there are also great Dioons, Cycas, Macrozamia and Ceratozamia. Also offered are quite a few coning sized Encephalartos ferox, both sexes. I hope you enjoy seeing this collection below.

CERATOZAMIA MICROSTROBILA DWARF SPECIES FOR FILTERED LIGHT CONTAINER SIZE: 1.5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 2.5 inches PRESENCE OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: Understory dwarf cycad that is never over about three feet tall and has wide but small leaflets. CERATOZAMIA PACIFICA LARGE SPECIMEN FEMALE IN CONE EXTREMELY RARE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10 x 10 inches PRESENCE OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: Present name for a Mexican species that presently has no formal name as of yet. Thick, medium width long green leaflets that are quite leathery. Anticipate a large mature plant. This one is a female in cone. Wants filtered light. Regular Price: $1500


CERATOZAMIA MEXICANA TYPE LARGE SPECIMEN TRIPLE HEAD PLANT MALE IN CONE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: Cluster of three heads measuring 20 x 20 inches, male in cone PRESENCE OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Unknown COMMENTS: This is an extremely old specimen that has three trunks. An old male cone is evident. The horizontal leaves are long and arching. Leaflets are thick. It is very similar to Cz mexicana. Regular Price: $2500


CERATOZAMIA SPECIES LARGE SPECIMEN FEMALE IN CONE EXTREMELY RARE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 8 x 13 inches PRESENCE OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This is a very interesting plant that we haven't formally identified. We think we might know what it is. The leaves definitely have a blue tint that you can't see on these photos. Another prominent characteristic are the very prominent longitudinal veins you see if you hold the leaflets up to the light. CYCAS BIFIDA GROUPING OF LEAFLETS PART OF MICHOLITZII COMPLEX RARE SPECIES FOR FILTERED LIGHT CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is an unusual filtered light Asian cycad that has grouping of typically two leaflets on the rachis of the leaf stem. Leaves tend to go straight up and are dark green in color. This species branches to the second order. It's a great garden plant with good cold tolerance to the low 20's F. Regular Price: $800

CYCAS DEBAOENSIS CYCAD WITH BRANCHING LEAVES OLD SPECIMEN CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 6 x 8 inches, coning size OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: Shown here is a cycad that has trifurcating leaves. You have your main vertical leaf stem. Then there's a branch off that stem. The latter then branches with leaflets again. The only other cycad that does this is Cycas multipinnata. Debaoensis has somewhat fluffy, plumose appearing leaves and are easy to spot. They are extremely rare and like filtered light. Regular Price: $1500 This plant has sold

CYCAS SPECIES SPECIMEN WITH TALL TRUNK LONG GREEN LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 9 x 32 inches, coning size OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This specimen Cycas is fairly old with almost three feet of trunk. It has exceptionally long green leaves. It was removed from the ground where it saw winter cold temperatures into the 20's F. We do not know the sex. Regular Price: $2000

CYCAS SPECIES PROBABLY AUSTRALIAN SPECIES FAT TRUNK, UPRIGHT LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 13 x 20 inches, coning size OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This specimen Cycas quite attractive and it's obvious to appreciate the stout trunk. Also, note the leaves are a lime color and upright. We are pretty sure this is an Australian species but can't give it an exact ID as it had no tag. We do not know the sex. DIOON ANGUSTIFOLIA NICE GARDEN SIZE SUPER THIN LEAFLETS CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: CAUDEX SIZE: 7 x 8 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: one, 3.5 inches RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Mexican cycad species doesn't ever get very large and has about three foot leaves. It is known for its super thin leaflets. This distinguishes it from Dioon edule. This plant also has a good size offset. Leaf color is green. In the garden it wants full, hot sun. DIOON EDULE SUN LOVING CYCAD FAIRLY COLD HARDY CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 7.25 x 9 inches, leaves removed when dug OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: This is one of the most bullet-proof cycads there is. It tolerates temperatures into the upper teens F. and loves full hot sun - even in the desert. They are easy to grow and durable. Regular Price: $750

*DIOON HOLMGRENII* CONTAINER SIZE: 20 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 9 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Mexican cycad is known for its long leaves and typically armored leaflets. Leaf color is green. Leaves on this plant are five feet long, much longer than Diooon merolae or edule. They make a medium sized mature cycad and prefer some sun at a minimum. Plants of this size are hard to find. Regular Price: $1100

DIOON MINIMA AN UN-DESCRIBED CYCAD SPECIES REMARKABLY SMALL CAUDEX SHORT LEAVES SLOW GROWING CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 5.5 X 9.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: Three pups, 3, 2.5 and 2 inches without leaves RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This Mexican cycad has never been formally described. Little is known about it. But, a few nurserymen do know about it and discuss it from time to time. Twenty years ago I saw my first plant with a 4 inch caudex, short leaves that was coning. Caudexes can be a bit fury. Leaves on this plant are 16 inches long! I estimate the age at 40 years. Sorry that I don't have a photo with someone next to it. It barely comes above the knees. I do not know the sex of this cycad. It likes sun and heat. This is perhaps the fourth plant of this species that we've ever had. It is near impossible to find. The stem below the main caudex is quite narrow. I hope the purchaser of this plant appreciates what he's getting. Regular Price: $1500 This Plant Has Sold

DIOON QUERETARO BLUE OR BLUE GREEN LEAVES SUN LOVING CYCAD CONTAINER SIZE: 5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 3 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This interesting and sought after Dioon is popular because of it's often blue color in sun. It wants sun in most areas and is cold hardy into the upper teens F. It is native to the region of Queretaro, Mexico, and is presently felt to be a variety of edule. It is highly recommended and we have others to choose from. Price: $225 This Plant Has Sold

DIOON SPECIES NO LIVING LEAVES WILL NEED TO WAIT TO IDENTIFY CONTAINER SIZE: 5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 2.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This plant only had the leaf shown when it was dug. It had no identifying tag. It could be an edule type but time will tell. The lack of leaves was from the lack of water. But, it will recover. Price: $85

DIOON SPINULOSUM A VERY TROPICAL APPEARING CYCAD OLD PLANT GREAT LEAVES AND TRUNK CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 8 x 14.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: Dioon spinulosum is very tropical and exotic appearing. And, it can get tall over the centuries. In the wild it's been noted to have trunks over 40 feet tall. Such plants may be 1000 years old. Leaf color in filtered light can be a dark green whereas sun will make it more lime green. Leaflets are armed somewhat. The trunk is narrow. What you're seeing here is most likely a 20 to 25 year old plant. Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F. Regular Price: $1800


DIOON SPINULOSUM ANOTHER OLDER PLANT UPRIGHT LEAVES AND HUGE TRUNK CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10 x 34 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: See above. This Dioon spinulosum is probably twice as old as the plant above with almost 3 feet of vertical trunk. It is indeed a specimen, locally grown and stunning example of this species. Lower leaves were cut off to facilitate digging and transport. It deserves a very upscale garden in filtered light. Regular Price: $3600


DIOON SPINULOSUM WITH TIME, THE BEST SPINULOSUM WE'RE SHOWING YOU VERY OLD SPECIMEN LOTS OF TRUNK! ALL IT NEEDS IS A NEW THROW OF LEAVES! CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 11 x 40 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: This cycad is the largest of the three. It was growing in a crowded location and had leaf damage in transport to our nursery. But, give it time. It'll be the prize of the litter and obviously the biggest and oldest of these three. ENCEPHALARTOS ALTENSTEINII A MASSIVE SPECIMEN CYCAD HUGE TRUNK & LONG LEAVES BOTANICAL GARDEN QUALITY CONTAINER SIZE: 24 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 17 x 40 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African green cycad is native to the Eastern Cape and Natal regions. It makes a very large plant. Trunks can get to twenty feet. Leaves are green and the petiole adjacent to the trunk is free of prickles (see last photo). This is a huge cycad and very heavy. The leaves are in excellent shape and it should perform perfectly in an upscale garden. It's a good grower and loves coastal sun. Regular Price: $5800



ENCEPHALARTOS ARENARIUS GREEN VARIETY CLASSIC FORM - STANDARD WIDTH LEAFLETS CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 14.5 X 19 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African cycad is a medium sized mature species with prominent lobe like barbs on the leaflets. This particular plant is a green variety with medium width leaflets. From this collection we've also have wide leaf varieties and plants with more blue color. This plant was put into pumice. It is very nicely sized with a well shaped caudex. It easily takes coastal sun and is cold hardy into the low 20's F. Note, some of the trunk is buried. Regular Price: $4500


ENCEPHALARTOS CHIMYAZANGE LARGER CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD GREEN LEAVES, CUPPED LEAFLETS CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 17 x 18 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This plant was labeled in the garden as "Chimyazange". This is a locality name. We've only seen or heard of seed on one occasion for this plant. It is Central African and will be a green mature plant. There's no information on the Net about this plant. I'd anticipate a mature size that is similar to E. manikensis. This plant had a label with this name. Regular Price: $3200

ENCEPHALARTOS FEROX DOUBLE HEAD SPECIMEN WIDE LEAFLETS TOLERATES FILTERED LIGHT CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: width both heads 15 x 11.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South and Central African cycad is known for it's "holly fern" leaflets, green color and red cones. This plant is a "double header" and will have two sets of leaves. It is coning size but we do not know the sex. It'll make a fine garden specimen and can take a bit of sun or filtered light. Shown is a spent male cone. This is the largest E. ferox being presented today. It's near impossible to find a plant this large on the commercial market. I figure it may have been one of the first cycads that this collector put in his garden - forty to fifty years ago. Leaf form is the classic flat leaf. ENCEPHALARTOS GRATUS CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD VERY LARGE SPECIMEN PLANT MALE IN CONE CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 16 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Central African cycad is native to Mozambique. It is a fairly large species with trunks up to eight or nine feet. Leaves are green. It tolerates coastal full sun but in far inland locations, a few hours of sun would be best. This specimen plant is quite large and would make a nice addition to any garden. Male cones are usually a yellow-orange color, so you can tell it's a spent cone because of the brown color. ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD VERTICAL LEAVES QUICK GROWING VERY LARGE SPECIMEN PLANT CONTAINER SIZE: 35 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 20 x 37.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a critically endangered cycad species is from Kenya and Tanzania, where it grows at medium elevations in misty mountain habitats. Leaves are a light green, long and upright. Leaflets are minimally armed. Leaves are over ten feet long and trunks can get over ten feet. Along the coast it takes sun well but part day sun may be better far inland. This is a classic and huge specimen of this species - rarely seen in this size for sale. Estimate age forty years with an overall height in the pot of 14 feet or more. Regular Price: $5600


ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD MALE IN CONE QUICK GROWING GREAT GARDEN SIZE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 11 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This green Central African cycad is found at elevation in mountainous regions of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is the classic prototype for a whole group of species, all part of the Manikensis Complex. It is a medium sized mature cycad with a trunk of three to six feet, green leaves and leaf length of about five to six feet. Like other Central African species, it can take full coastal sun but inland would prefer part day sun or less. This plant is a handsome and nicely sized cycad that would love to be in your garden. It is a male plant in cone. Regular Price: $1400


ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS TYPE GREEN CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD HUGE PLANT FOR 15G POT CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 11 x 19 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This green Central African cycad is undoubtedly one of the species of the "Manikensis Complex". These species are all Central African. Time will tell which species it is. It's a very large plant for a 15g pot and ready for the garden. The caudex essentially fills the pot opening. It has green leaves, mostly upright and is very attractive right now. Along the coast, it will like full sun. The leaves of this plant were tied up because they are very long and we needed to conserve space. Leaf length is about 8 to 10 feet. Regular Price: $1500

ENCEPHALARTOS MANIKENSIS TYPE GREEN CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD DUG PLANT THAT HAD NO LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: See description above. This plant was not a removed offset. Rather, it was a plant in the garden with no leaves. We got a very large rootball. Thus, we had to put it into a 25g pot. It'll be a green, fast growing Central African cycad. It'll throw leaves by spring or summer and make a good sized plant. Regular Price: $1000

ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS POPULAR GREEN GARDEN CYCAD MONSTER SIZED SPECIMEN READY FOR UPSCALE LANDSCAPE CONTAINER SIZE: 35 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 32 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is the most classic of all the green cycads from South Africa. It is native to the Eastern Cape region where it grows on cliffs and in mountain habitats. It can get trunk that is stout and over 15 feet tall. Leaves are usually five to six feet long, green in color. In most locations except the desert it easily takes full sun. This cycad shown here is an absolutely huge specimen that would love to be in a fine garden or botanical display. As you can see, it's of spectacular size with a perfect trunk almost three feet tall! ENCEPHALARTOS PAUCIDENTATUS LARGEST OF THIS SPECIES WE'VE EVER OFFERED THE PRIZE PLANT OF THIS POSTING GREEN CENTRAL AFRICAN CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 17 x 26 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This is an extremely rare green cycad from Swaziland in northern South Africa. It grows in the same vicinity as E. heenanii. Trunks of very old plants can get over 15 feet tall with six foot or longer green, glossy leaves. It is super attractive and very sought after. The plant we're showing here is the largest of this species we've ever had. And, from all the private collections I've ever obtained, this is the only plant of this species. ENCEPHALARTOS SCHMITZII YOUNG PLANT IN 1.5 GALLON POT SUPER RARE CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD SMALLER MATURE SIZE CONTAINER SIZE: 1.5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: CAUDEX SIZE: 1.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This extremely rare cycad is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia at elevations above 3000 feet. It is a small cycad with blue-green leaves and trunks rarely over a foot tall. Leaflets are narrow. This is one of the true collector cycads and is usually impossible to find. This plant was tagged in the collection and dug with an appropriate rootball. As we've not had this species before, we can say little more about this species. ENCEPHALARTOS SEPTENTRIONALIS SUPER RARE CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD LEAVES FROSTY GREEN CONTAINER SIZE: 5 GALLON CAUDEX SIZE: 3 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Extremely rare COMMENTS: This species of cycad is next to impossible to find. It has a wide range of distribution through southern Sudan, northern Uganda, northern DRC and a few other localities. But, they are near impossible to visit. Therefore, it is sought after and coveted by collectors. Leaves are a frosty green, caudexes are fury and light colored, leaf length is up to about six feet. this species does cluster with maximum trunk height of six feet. The plant shown here is in a 5 gallon container and was dug with a nice root ball. We've had good luck digging this species. Regular Price: $900 This Plant Has Sold


ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES CENTRAL AFRICA VERY UNUSUAL PLANT LEAFLETS NARROW AND VERY THIN LEAFLETS NOT SURE WHAT SPECIES IT IS CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 22 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This plant has us a little stumped. It is definitely a Central African species. The leaves are narrow and super thin in thickness, almost like feeling paper. I've tried to show ample shots of the leaflets. It is a large caudex plant and probably quite old. If you think you know what it is, let us know. We're just listing it here an an unknown species. Obviously the plant was under stress from being under-watered. Regular Price: $3800


ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES MANIKENSIS TYPE CENTRAL AFRICA SHOULD BE MEDIUM SIZED GREEN CYCAD CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 15 x 13 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This green Central African cycad is undoubtedly one of the species of the "Manikensis Complex". These species are all Central African. Time will tell which species it is. It's a good sized plant and these are known to be good and quick growers. In the ground with good care it should explode and have much prettier time with some water and fertilizer. Along the coast, it will like full sun but may be prettier in 1/2 sun. CONCINNUS NO LEAVES WHEN DUG BEAUTIFUL CAUDEX CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 14.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: When we dug this plant, there was no tag. Jesse said there was a nearby identified E. concinnus and the caudexes are very similar. But, for now, we'll just say "Central African species". The plant had no leaves but this beautiful caudex as shown. It'll explode with leaves soon and should be super attractive. I would anticipate a medium sized mature plant with green leaves. ENCEPHALARTOS SPECIES SOUTH AFRICAN ROOTING OUT CAUDEX IN PUMICE GREEN LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 12 inches, rooting out OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This particular plant had less roots on digging than we'd like. So, we put it in pumice. We trimmed back quite a few leaves. We are not sure of the exact species but it is South African. We'll probably cut the existing leaves in half soon. The caudex is buried and can't be seen well. Regular Price: $1000


ENCEPHALARTOS VILLOSUS SOUTH AFRICAN SPECIES TOLERATES FILTERED LIGHT PLANT IN PUMICE CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 10 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This South African species is known for growing in filtered light and never forming much trunk. It has green, thin, armed leaflets. It can take some sun along the coast. This plant was placed into pumice to promote more roots. Regular Price: $900

ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 16 x 16 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This Central African is known for its super long leaves that go almost straight up. Native to southwestern Uganda, plants are reported with trunks over ten feet tall. Certainly within the U.S., there are no plants with anywhere near this amount of vertical trunk. But, plants do get super long leaves. Leaflets are green, narrow in width and armed. This is a good growing species that takes coastal sun but does better with protection inland. When dug we had to remove quite a number of leaves as it was carrying another swirl of lower leaves. Regular Price: $3100


LEPIDOZAMIA PEROFFSKYANA LARGE AUSTRALIAN CYCAD LEAVES HAVE NO SPINES LARGE SPECIMEN, MALE IN CONE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 18 x 32 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a very large Australian cycad that has absolute no spines on the stems or leaflets. It is shiny green in color with thin, long leathery leaflets. It can grow in strong filtered light or a bit of sun. It does need room to grow, especially horizontally. Cold tolerance is equal to the best Encephalartos. The specimen shown here is a male with a spent cone and is one of the larger we've ever had. Regular Price: $3800


LEPIDOZAMIA HOPEI A DIFFERENT AUSTRALIAN CYCAD SPECIES WIDER LEAFLETS THAN PEROFFSKYANA AND, IN CENTURIES, GETS TALLER CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 5.25 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: Similar to the cycad above, also from Australia, but this species has wide leaflets. And, it is much more difficult to locate. Some feel it may take a bit more sun. There are no spines whatsoever. Nice starter plant on this species. Regular Price: $750

MACROZAMIA JOHNSONII AN AUSTRALIAN CYCAD MEDIUM SIZE MATURE FLAT GREEN LEAVES, THIN LEAFLETS PLANT IN PUMICE CONTAINER SIZE: 25 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 13 X 11 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a medium to large Australian cycad native to New South Whales. It gets a trunk up to about four feet with six to seven foot flat green leaves. The leaves are flat in cross section and the leaflets are narrow and pointed at the end. It's a full sun species with a cold tolerance of about 20 degrees F. We have put it in pumice as Macrozamias are a bit difficult to re-establish. Regular Price: $1600


MACROZAMIA MOOREI BLUE FORM AN AUSTRALIAN CYCAD LARGE MATURE SIZE KEELED BLUE LEAVES THIN LEAFLETS VERY DESIRABLE PLANT WITH COLD HARDINESS CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very rare COMMENTS: This is a larger Australian cycad that is similar to its green form but has blue leaflets and leaves. It has a stout trunk that, in centuries, get to over 20 feet tall. The leaves are strongly keeled and the leaflets are narrow. There are reports of this cycad tolerating 18 degrees F. It needs full hot sun to flourish and can grow in the desert. Blue forms are hard to find, especially with size. Regular Price: $500 This Plant Has Sold


MACROZAMIA SPECIES MONSTER PLANT FLAT LEAVES UNCERTAIN WHAT IT IS 30 INCH CAUDEX! CONTAINER SIZE: 36 inch box CAUDEX SIZE: 30 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Probably Very rare COMMENTS: This is a larger Australian cycad but we've been unable to make a definite ID on it. It's too big to be communis or johsonii. Also, note the lack of yellow at the leaflet attachment. Leaves are at least 8 feet long and the caudex is an enormous 30 inches across. Leaf color is green. This plant will take some room and needs full sun. I anticipate good cold tolerance. Regular Price: $3200

MACROZAMIA SPECIES POSSIBLY SOMETHING DIFFERENT CHECK OUT THE LEAVES CONTAINER SIZE: 15 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 8.5 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Uncertain COMMENTS: This is an unknown Australian Macrozamia that appears headed to be a small plant. The leaves are flat in cross section or maybe even reflexed down a bit. Leaf color is green, leaflets are a bit curved, pointed at the ends and have yellow stem attachments. We have gotten it down to be one of several, but won't make the call right now. I'd anticipate it wants sun or part sun. I also think that maybe it's something rare - this collector planted the most rare of the rare items. Regular Price: $795

We can't put a final ID on it. It has long arching leaves that are flat in cross section. Leaves are green. Leaflets are angled about 45 degrees toward the distal leaf. Regular Price: $1200


STANGERIA ERIOPUS A DWARF CYCAD THAT LOOKS LIKE A FERN TAKES SHADE OR SOME SUN FEMALE IN CONE - MATURE CONTAINER SIZE: 7 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 6.5 x 7 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Very Rare COMMENTS: A South African, fen-like cycad that is rarely over four feet tall, has wide green leaflets and remains small in the garden. It can take filtered light or, right on the coast, several hours of sun. It is a most unusual and often requested cycad. This plant is about fifteen years old (hard to estimate b/c is a dwarf) and has a female cone. Regular Price: $795

ZAMIA INTEGRIFOLIA DWARF CYCAD SPECIES NARROW LEAVES CONING SIZE CONTAINER SIZE: 5 gallon CAUDEX SIZE: 2.75 x 5.75 inches OFFSETS/PUPS: RARITY: Rare COMMENTS: This dwarf Zamia is native to some areas of the SE U.S. as well as various Caribbean islands including Cuba. It never gets a trunk over about 8 inches, has narrow leaflets with leaf length not over two feet. Color is green and armor is minimal (not on leaflets). It'll take some coastal sun or filtered light. This plant needs to establish some roots to regain it's vigor. Regular Price: $250
