Description of This Collection

Below are photos of about fifty rare cycads that came from a private garden in the La Mesa area of East San Diego.  Some are amazingly large.  All have been outdoor grown in a garden that sees intense summer heat and a fair amount of winter cold.  Most plants have been grown in full sun.  All plants required digging, many with the assistance of heavy equipment.  A total of three days of crew digging was required.  The plants shown here required three large transport trucks to bring to the nursery and another three days to offload and pot them up, 

The collection for these plants was a four decades long pursuit by a real cycad enthusiast, "B.H".  To the left are a few photos of his garden.  In actuality, he is a distant relative of mine and also a long term friend of the nursery.  He is presently in his mid-nineties and just can't care for the garden.  His family contacted our nursery to find new homes for his cycads.  His ground is rocky with good drainage.  Digging was not easy, but we were able to get great root balls on almost all of the plants.  A few will require re-rooting in pumice. 

The most exciting part of this collection are the Encephalartos, , which this enthusiast was most fond of.  But, there are also interesting Dioon and Macrozamia and other genera.  Many of these plants required heavy equipment for removal and would need the same for delivery.  But, all these plants can be delivered.  I hope you enjoy seeing this collection below.
