Description of This Presentation
Below are photos of about thirty cycads from a cycad enthusiast in the Laguna Hills area of Southern California.  This owner has developed health issues and was forced to sell his collection of rare cycads.  The majority of the plants in this collection are Encephalartos, but there are some plants of two of genera.  About two thirds of the plants were container grown over the past few decades.  A smaller number were dug and then potted into plastic containers.  All were grown outdoors in some amount of direct sun. The seller obtained his plants from several cycad nurseries in Southern CA including Jungle Music.  On some of the plants the original labels had been lost.  We have attempted to accurately name all plants below as best as we can.  We hope that you enjoy this presentation.

PLANT NUMBER:

RARITY:
Rare
COMMENTS:  This plant is a Ceratozamia but I am not sure of the species name.  It has crown or two sets of leaves and will eventually fork into two trunks.  The leaves are very short and the leaflets are packed tightly onto the leaf.  They are also very narrow.  It was grown in a few hours of sun.  It may end up being a dwarf species of some sort.  At this point, we cannot call it C. kuesteriana.  I do not know emerging leaf color.  But, it is possible this could be a super rare un-described species.

COMMENTS:  This seldom seen species is native to PNG and some surrounding areas.  It gets to no more than 12 to 15 feet with a rather thin trunk.  This is the first of this species we've ever offered for sale.  This blue Australian cycad is almost impossible to find.  It likes heat, low humidity, sun and not to freeze.  Thus, ideally, it wants "dry heat".  It is one of the few blue Cycas that can survive in this area.

DIOON

DIOON MEROLAE

CONTAINER SIZE:  15g
CAUDEX SIZE:  9 x 10 inches
PRESENCE OF OFFSETS/PUPS:
PLANT NUMBER:
8
RARITY:
very rare
COMMENTS:  Native to Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico, this super attractive cycad is slow growing.  Domestically, it's rare to see old specimens with more than three feet of trunk.  In the wild century old plants have trunks over ten feet tall.  The leaves are short, three to four feet and an interesting gray-green in color.  Leaflets are armed.  This is one of my favorite Dioons.  They take coastal sun but need some protection far inland.  The cycad shown here has an age of an estimated 15 years.  It's super ready for the ground.

RARITY:  very

COMMENTS:
This interesting and sought after Dioon is popular because of it's blue color in sun.  I mean, strikingly blue!  Check out these photos.  Although we didn't have a tag on this plant, from it's leaflet characteristics, overall appearance and prominent blue color, we feel it is a Dioon edule variety queretaro.  It wants sun in most areas and is cold hardy into the upper teens F.  It is native to the region of Queretaro, Mexico, and is highly recommended.

PRESENCE OF OFFSETS/PUPS:
PLANT NUMBER:
10
RARITY:
rare
COMMENTS:  Dioon spinulosum
is very tropical and exotic appearing.  And, it can get tall over the centuries.  In the wild it's been noted to have trunks over 40 feet tall.  Leaf color in filtered light can be a dark green whereas sun will make it more lime green.  Leaflets are armed somewhat.  The trunk is narrow.  I'm showing you here a plant that is probably 25 years old with nearly two feet of trunk.  This takes ages to get this tall!  It was dug but should do great with the dig.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.  We have regular nursery stock of much younger plants.  This plant is a true botanical specimen for an upscale yard.  Anyone would love it in their garden.

COMMENTS:
This green cycad forms a fairly large mature plant and its leaves are green in color.  You can spot this species because the base of the stems have no spines or prickles.  This is a very old specimen with 15.5 inches of trunk and a huge crown of leaves.  It wants full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  This was one of the larger plants of this collection and was dug with a great root ball.

COMMENTS:
This South African species is known for its dwarf mature size and compact leaves.  Leaf color is green to gray green.  It is a super rare cycad coveted by many.  You'll almost never seen one available of this size.  A coning size caudex is 8 inches or a bit larger.  I suspect this plant has coned before but do not know the sex.  It likes coastal sun and is cold hardy to the low 20's F.  I've never had an E. cerinus quite this large before.  It was dug with a very large root ball.

COMMENTS:
This green cycad is also native to South Africa and has leaves that many say resemble the Holly Fern.  Cones are fire engine red, especially on females.  Caudex size is never over 2 feet and leaf size is up to about 7 feet.  Most people grow this species in Filtered light.  I'd estimate the cold

COMMENTS:  Of all the cycads in the world that one could dream of possessing, this in in the top five that are most difficult to obtain.  It is from the Transvaal area of South Africa and has blue to blue-green leaves.  It loves sun and heat but should be protected in the desert.  Mature size is medium.  This plant has been container grown and is amazing because of the number of offsets that it has.  It is a collectors dream to own such a specimen.

COMMENTS:
This large Central African cycad is native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  It is known for its very long and powerful upright leaves.  Trunks get over 15 feet tall and leaves are 12 feet long.  It takes coastal sun.  Being Central African, it's not as cold hardy as the South African species, but multiple growers in our area have had no problems with it.  This plant is huge for a 15g pot.  You never see them for sale this large.

COMMENTS:
This is another Central African cycad.  It's probably one of the more rare cycads presented here.  About two decades ago, one could only dream of getting this plant, the cycad with the longest leaves of any cycad in the world.  Leaves are green in color and can be over twenty feet long.  Native habitats are in the Congo and Angola.  Trunks can get over 40 feet tall.  Leaflets are armed and recognizable.  They often have multiple punctate ends at the terminal leaflet.  This plant is in a larger 20g pot to give it room to grow.  It was not dug but rather container grown.  I'd give it part day sun or strong filtered light.  It was getting half day sun when we got it.  This was too much.  Cold hardiness is probably the mid-twenties.  Like the ituriensis above, you never see plants this big for sale.

COMMENTS:
This blue cycad is from South Africa and is popular because it's not as spiny as some other blue African species.  In the ground leaves are quite uniform.  It does need sun to maintain the blue color.  Mature size is typically under six to seven feet, even after many years.  It's easy to grow and very attractive.

COMMENTS:
This cycad is extremely rare.  It is native to northwestern Uganda with about two to three hundred plants remaining in the wild.  Habitat elevation is 900 to 1400 meters.  Mature plants have caudex height of under ten feet.  Leaves are green and six to seven feet long.  Because of political issues and this species remote location, it is rarely seen for sale. And, a plant of this size is also rarely seen.  I'd recommend limited sun.  cold tolerance is not specifically known.
