ENCEPHALARTOS
APLANATUS
Locality: This species is extant
in isolated populations in the northern and southern
regions of Swaziland. It can also be found in
Mozambique. This plant grows in shady, semi-dry
forests.
Plant Size: This
is a small to medium species which has a subterranean
stem. The leaves can get up to about three meters
in length. Stems of (of this species) almost never
produce basal suckers.
Other Characteristics:
This species closely resembles Encephalartos villosus,
though it is distinctly separate as a species. One
of the primary differences is that this species is not
as vigorous or robust nor does it produce basal suckers
like Encephalartos villosus. The name "aplanatus"
comes from the Latin word meaning "not flat" which
refers to the wavy nature of its leaflets. This
species is moderately armed and has soft, flexible
leaflets. The cones on females are yellow or
yellow/green. Male cones are a comparable color.
Culture: This
species, in any environment, needs to be in shade or
filtered light. They like a loamy top soil that
drains well. They are somewhat tolerant of water,
but I would not plant them in areas that stay
excessively wet.
Landscape Usage:
Encephalartos aplanatus is ideally set in established
gardens or shade. It is tropical in its look and
complements a "jungle atmosphere". As they
do get fairly long leaves, I would set this plant back
from the foreground, as it will most likely outgrow the
spot, while keeping it in from of species that get
larger.
Availability: We
typically can offer smaller sizes of this rare species. It
is seldom offered for sale. Occasionally we have
plants up to 15 gallon size. As this species never
gets very larger, it would be unheard of to have a boxed
plant of this species.
Pricing:
Encephalartos aplanatus is a
rare but fairly affordable. But, we usually only have
smaller sizes.
Examples of prices are listed below.
