ENCEPHALARTOS ARENARIUS
Locality: Encephalartos arenarius is from
the coastal dunes and forest close to Alexandria in the Eastern
Cape. The name "arenarius" actually come from
Latin meaning "growing in sand or sandy places".
Plant Size: This species is small to
medium. Leaf length can range from one to two meters (i.e.
three to six feet approximately) depending on cultivar and
exposure to sun. It is a semi-subterranean species which
can get about a meter to a meter and a half of trunk above
ground. This species also tends to be prolific in making
basal suckers, though this is not always the case.
Other Characteristics: Like many of the
Encephalartos from the Eastern Cape, this species is variable in
color, size and leaf type. E. arenarius can range
in color from a dull green to a powdery white color (bearing a
likeness to E. horridus). Additionally the leaves
can be wide or narrow, depending on the cultivar and phenotype
of individual plants. Female cones are a blue-green color
and male cones a yellowish/blue color.
Culture: As with most Encephalartos, this
species prefers a well draining soil. They are
particularly
suited to a more alkaline, sandy soil like their native habitat.
That being said, they can tolerate more tropical conditions and
are quite adaptable. They are tolerant of coastal full sun
and the blue variety is hardy to sun in inland areas as well.
Landscape Usage: Encephalartos arenarius
is one of the more showy Encephalartos you can grow.
They are a fairly fast grower and make large sprawling crowns,
which are good for low lying and foreground landscaping.
.
Availability: We
typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to
coning sized specimens. At any given time we should have
at least a hundred of this species available. The sizes
from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered. Larger
plants can be delivered by truck.
Pricing:
Encephalartos arenariuis is a
rare species and not the cheapest. But, we offer smaller,
more affordable plants. Being a good grower in the ground,
one will have a good sized plant in not too many years.
Examples of prices are listed below.
