ENCEPHALARTOS
BANDULA
Locality:
This species is from the Bandula Mountain range in
Mozambique. Like many species from Mozambique, the
climate/habitat changes with elevation. Lower elevation
populations tend to be found in rocky hills and
grasslands. Higher elevations populations have forests
and more dense vegetation.
Plant Size:
This is a medium sized species. The leaves are slightly
longer and the stems more stout and short than
Encephalartos manikensis. Leaves can reach a length of
about two and a half meters. Stems will max our at about
two meters. Like most of the "manikensis alliance" this
species can produce basal suckers, but they are sparse.
Other Characteristics: This
species grows quickly and has beautiful green leaves,
which typically emerge a light green and turn a deep
forest green as they harden. This species falls within
the "manikensis alliance" which means that it
is either a cultivar or related species to Encephalartos
manikensis. Through the various mountain ranges in
Mozambique, different (in leaf-type and cones) and
separate (spatially) populations have been observed.
Their is large debate on what these plants are; leaving
a tremendous amount of taxonomic work to be done. Both
the male and female cones are green.
Culture: This
plant does fine in full or partial coastal sun. For
inland areas, I would recommend partial sun or filtered
light. In desert climates, this plant would do best in
filtered light or shade. Loamy soil that drains well is
ideal, but this species is fairly tolerant of semi-moist
conditions.
Landscape Usage:
This makes a large showy plant as it matures, and will
require space. Often this plant is used below larger
species to give it some protection from sun. I will
definitely give you a full, lush and tropical look no
matter where you place it.
Availability: We
typically can offer several sizes of this plant. It
is seldom offered for sale. Occasionally we obtain
huge plants from private collections.
Pricing:
Encephalartos bandula is a
rare species but somewhat affordable. We usually have nice
5 gallon to 15 gallon plants and occasionally large
specimens.
Examples of prices are listed below.
