ENCEPHALARTOS
BARTERI
Locality: This species is endemic
to Nigeria, Ghana and Togo. This plant has a wide
distribution and populations are relatively large and
healthy. Numbers have declined over the years,
which can be attributed to frequent fires and flooding
of their habitat. Its native habitat consists of
rock outcroppings of sandstone and granite amongst
woodland savanna growth to tropical forest. It can
also be found in grasslands interspersed with short
trees and brush (Bösenberg, J.D. 2010. Encephalartos
barteri) The climate is hot and relatively
humid/moist. The areas where this species grows do
not freeze and are fairly tropical.
Plant Size:
This is a smaller species. Leaves can vary in
length from a meter to almost two meters (this will vary
with exposure and age). The stems are
subterranean, an will not produce trunk above ground for
the most part. This species can be solitary, but
will produce basal suckers as well.
Other Characteristics:
This species was named after Charles barter who discovered
the plant in 1859. (The Cycads, Whitelock &
Benadom) This is a beautiful, tropical
species of Encephalartos. This species is
divided in the two subspecies, Encephalartos barteri
ssp. barteri and Encephalartos barteri ssp.
allochrous, which will undoubtedly become two
distinct species at some point (they are too
unique/different not to separate). This species
has narrow, mildly armed leaflets which are
soft/flexible and unarmed petioles. It is a
difficult plant to grow in subtropical climates as it is
very cold sensitive. The crowns on this species
(under ideal conditions) can become quite full, lush and
beautiful. The female cones on this species are
green as are the male cones, though male cones tend to
have a slight bluish hue to them.
Culture: Unless
you are in a exceptionally warm, frost free area, I
don't really recommend this species. If you try
this species is really only wants to be in filtered
light in cooler or humid climates or in the shade.
A loamy soil is fine for this species, and they are
fairly tolerant of water, but do not want to be if boggy
soil.
Landscape Usage:
This species is really for collectors who have to
have them or someone who lives in a tropical climate.
Encephalartos barteri does not take up much
room and can be quite attractive in the right climate.
For everywhere else, this plant will have to be
protected during the winter and have an ideal, very warm
spot.
Availability: From
time to time we could get a few plants of this species.
But, it is a long shot. Contact us
regarding the size you seek and we'll let you know when we get in one like you
want.
Pricing:
Encephalartos barteri is an extremely
rare species, so prices tend to be expensive.
We don't know the price of any plants we acquire until
that happens. Contact us for availability when you
seek one.
