ENCEPHALARTOS BUBALINUS
Locality: This species is endemic to northern
Tanzanian and southern Kenya, where there are two isolated
populations. This species is extant in mountain forests,
rough terrain laden with undergrowth and rocky
soil/outcroppings. The climate is fairly hot, humid and
wet.
Plant Size: This is a medium sized plant.
Leaves can reach a length of about two meters. Stems are
fairly short only reaching a height of one to two meters on very
old plants. This species has a tendency to make a lot of
basal suckers, though some plants do so sparingly.
Plant Description: The name 'bubalinus'
comes from the Latin word meaning "buff", which is in reference
to the color of the tomentum on its stem and petioles. An
interesting note about this species is that in times of famine,
locals will eat the seeds of this species to avoid starvation. (Bösenberg,
J.D. 2010. Encephalartos bubalinus) Encephalartos bubalinus is a beautiful and tropical looking plant, which has
green to grey/green leaves. It has cupped leaflets, which
tend to be slightly plumose or out of plane one larger
specimens. Its leaflets are moderately armed as are its
petioles. They are not terribly sharp though.
Depending on exposure, this species can sprawl out or hold
upright crowns of leaves. Horticulturalists are unsure how
safe populations of this species is (though apparently stable at
this time), as the terrain is quite difficult and rough to
negotiate. Female cones on this species are a
blue/green color, where male cones are a green color with a
slight blue hue to them.
Culture: In coastal and inland areas,
this species does well in sun or partial sun. For desert
areas, this plant would do well in filtered light of shade.
This species should be in a soil that drains well, but is
tolerant of water.
Landscape Usage: This species will add a
tropical element to any garden, and is truly beautiful. It
does make a good sized plant and can take up more room than some
of the other medium sized species as the leaves are fairly long
and can sprawl out. It is ideal for tropical gardens, but
can work in other applications too!
Availability: We
typically can offer various sizes of this rare species.
Sometimes we'll have available larger plants. You'll have
to call for present specimen availability. The sizes from
seedlings to 5 gallon size are easily mail ordered.
Pricing:
Encephalartos bubalinus is a fairly rare yet a
reasonably affordable species. We usually have a good selection of many
sizes.
Examples of usual sizes that are available with prices are listed below.
