ENCEPHALARTOS
CONCINNUS
Locality: This species is from
three isolated populations in southern Zimbabwe. Its
native habitat is warm and humid. They grown on
steep rocky hillsides sparsely forested with trees,
brush and grass. Plants are typically found
beneath trees and have a regular supply of
water/moisture from mist.
Plant Size: This
is a medium sized species. The leaves are and
stems comparable to
Encephalartos manikensis. Leaves can
reach a length of about two meters. Stems
will max our at about two to three meters. Like most of the
"manikensis alliance" this species can produce
basal suckers, but they are sparse.
Other Characteristics:
This species grows quickly and has beautiful green leaves,
with fuzzy white leaflet margins (one new leaves) and
petioles coated in white tomentum. The leaflet
spines on this species can vary - where some are mildly
armed, others are almost spineless. The petioles
on this species do bear spines and prickles. This species falls
within the "manikensis alliance" and is closely
related to
Encephalartos manikensis. Other similar
species in this alliance can be observed through the various
mountain ranges and locales in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Both the male and female cones
are green to a blue/green color.
Culture: This
plant does fine in full or partial coastal sun.
For inland areas, I would recommend partial sun or
filtered light. In desert climates, this plant
would do best in filtered light or shade. Loamy
soil that drains well is ideal, but this species is
fairly tolerant of semi-moist conditions.
Landscape Usage:
This makes a large showy plant as it matures, and will
require space. Often this plant is used below
larger species to give it some protection from sun.
I will definitely give you a full, lush and tropical
look no matter where you place it.
Availability: We
typically can offer multiple sizes of this rare cycad. It
is seldom offered for sale. Occasionally we obtain
huge plants from private collections.
Pricing:
Encephalartos concinnus is a
rare species but somewhat affordable. We usually have nice
5 gallon to 15 gallon plants and occasionally large
specimens.
Examples of prices are listed below.
