ENCEPHALARTOS
CYCADIFOLIUS
Locality:
This species is from the
Winterberg Mountains in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The habitat is hot and dry, and the soil is composed of
rocky shale. Plants are found on gentle to steeply
sloped grassland hillsides and have adapted to
semi-regular fires that occur in the area.
Plant Size: E.
cycadifolius is a small species. Leaves are
generally less than one meter in length, and stems can
reach up to two meters in height, though this would be
an ancient plant. It is not uncommon to see this
species have multiple basal suckers, though the can be
solitary as well.
Other Characteristics:
As you could imagine, the name for this species is derived
from the Latin words meaning "cycad-like leaves".
This species is very cold tolerant and is tolerant of
drought as well, like many of the fine leafed
Encephalartos. It has leaves that range in
color from an olive green, to a deep forest green to an
almost whitish/green color (this color is typically
observed in newer leaves). Leaflets are stiff,
thin and and are unarmed. The petioles are unarmed
as well, and tend to have a twist to them (which can be
observed in the photos). This species is slow
growing and can be semi-dormant, dropping leaves before
it makes a new set. Both male and female cones on
this species are a pale yellow to pale yellow/green
color. Each are wooly to varying extents with a
white to yellowish tomentum.
Culture: In
coastal and inland areas, this species requires sun.
For desert areas partial sun to filtered light would be
ideal. This species needs a well drained soil, and
is sensitive to overwatering.
Landscape Usage:
This species is absolutely a collector type plant.
They are not the prettiest of the Encephalartos,
but can be quite attractive when grown well. The
can become full over time, so I recommend giving them
some room towards the front of a planting. Their
small stature would make them easy to miss if they were
placed behind larger, more vigorous species.
Availability: We
occasionally have this species available for sale.
It is one of the more difficult cycad species to find
for sale.
If you seek one, the best thing to do is to email us and
let you know you are interested in this species.
When available, this species sells extremely fast.
Pricing:
Encephalartos cycadifolius is very rare and
hard to find. But, we do get them in from time to
