ENCEPHALARTOS EUGENE-MARAISII

ENCEPHALARTOS EUGENE-MARAISII

Locality:  This species is endemic to the Waterberg range in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.  Their habitat is dry and arid.  They grow on steep rocky slops, grasslands and savanna.

Plant Size:  This is a small to medium sized species.  Leaf length generally does not exceed a meter, but can get up to a meter and a half (depending on plant age and exposure).  Stems can get about four meters high, but tend to be more narrow and columnar than other species.  E. eugene-maraisii will produce basal suckers to varying degrees.

Other Characteristics:   Of the Transvaal (previous province within South Africa north of the Vaal River) species, this is the most common.  That being said, this species is still exceptionally rare and almost extinct in the wild.  The leaves on this species can vary from a blue/green color, to a powdery silver and in some cases be an aquamarine.  leaflets twist almost perpendicular to the petiole, giving them a 'stacking' appearance (like blinds).  This species is moderately fast with regular flushes of leaves.

Culture:  In coastal and inland areas, this species prefers to be in the full sun, but can tolerate partial sun.  In desert areas, this species will want to be in partial sun or filtered light.  This species need a soil that drains well and prefers not to be overly wet.  If you plant this species in regularly irrigated areas, make sure to mount it, to avoid rotting issues.

Landscape Usage:  There are few species more attractive and gratifying to grow than E. eugene-maraisii.  This species should be shown off in any garden!  Not only for bragging rights (as it is very rare), but more importantly because it is stunning and people will notice a nice sized specimen.  With its beautiful color and unique growth habit it will make a spectacular addition to almost any garden.

Availability:  We typically can offer several sizes of this plant.  It is seldom offered for sale.  Occasionally we obtain larger plants from private collections.

Pricing:  Encephalartos eugene-maraisii is a very rare cycad species and always somewhat expensive to buy.  We usually have nice 5 gallon to 15 gallon plants and occasionally seedlings for sale.  Examples of prices are listed below.

Encephalartos eugene-maraisii would fall into the classification of "very expensive cycads".  It is a fabulous species and, in the sun, usually gives a great blue color.  We always have limited numbers available of this species.  It is rare to find them available.  We usually have a limited selection of sizes and occasionally a larger plant from a private collection.

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
