ENCEPHALARTOS
GRATUS
Locality: This species is endemic
to southern Malawi and Mozambique. Between the two
localities, habitat can vary significantly. Plants
grow on wet forests and ravines into open savanna where
they experience periodic fires.
Plant Size:
Encephalartos gratus is a medium sized cycad.
Leaves can grow in excess of two to two and a half
meters, depending on exposure. Stems are fat and
can reach heights of three meters over a
very long time. This species can produce basal
suckers, but does so sparingly.
Other Characteristics:
This species has many favorable characteristics.
It is fast growing, has a very tropical crown of leaves
and is very showy! Leaflets and petioles are
armed, but the spines are fairly flexible and soft. This cycad is similar in
appearance to other Central African varieties, such as
E. hildebrandtii, but is easier to grow than
many of them. This species is fairly common as far
as Encephalartos go, though are still rare in
cultivation. Female cones are a orange/brown.
Male cones green with flecks of brown on the scales.
Culture: In
coastal areas, this species does well in sun or partial
sun. For inland areas partial sun or filtered
light is better. In desert areas, this species
need filtered light or shade. This species is
water tolerant and likes a good draining top soil.
They can tolerate going dry (as the do in the savanna),
but they will not maintain full crowns.
Landscape Usage:
This plant is a great show stopper! I makes a
large trunk and crown of leaves which are impressive to
see, consequently it will need some room. It
should be set in a location for optimum viewing as it
will greatly enhance the beauty of your garden.
Availability: We
typically can offer quite a few sizes of this species, small to
large. We usually have boxed coning sized plants
as well. Occasionally we obtain
massive larger plants from private collections.
Pricing:
Encephalartos gratus is an affordable green cycad,
especially in smaller sizes.
We usually have nice
5 gallon to 15 gallon plants and occasionally an
assortment of larger plants
for sale.
Examples of prices are listed below.
