ENCEPHALARTOS HORRIDUS
Locality: This plant is from Port Elizabeth and
Uitenhage districts of Eastern Cape. This region rarely
freezes and gets very little rainfall annually. Plants are
situated in full sun in habitat, and the climate is very hot and
dry.
Plant Size: The average size for the
crown of leaves of E. horridus would probably be about
a three foot (one meter) diameter. However, this varies from
plant to plant. I have seen specimens where the diameter is six
feet and as small as eighteen inches. Trunk height is
about the same, one meter to a meter and a half. This
species can also be a prolific producer of pups (basal suckers).
Other Characteristics:
Encephalartos horridus is a "blue" cycad. To clarify,
we are not talking about a dark blue like one would see in the
ocean. Rather, it is a "silver-blue". There is
variability among representative plants from a definite blue
green to a darker blue to a light silver and sometimes almost to
a silver white color. E. horridus can have very
re-curved leaves, where the ends of the leaves curl downwards,
sometimes almost forming a 360 degree circle. Others are very
gently flexed downward making the crown width greater. The
female cone of E. horridus is a yellow/green and rusty
brown color. The male cones color are similar.
Culture: Like many other types of cycads,
E. horridus like a good draining soil. What this means
is that the water given to the plant needs to pass through the
growing medium fairly quickly.
Landscape Usage: Encephalartos horridus is a
great addition to almost any garden where weather permits it to
thrive. When selecting a location to grow one, do not put
it too close to a pathway as the leaves are very prickly.
But, don't put it so far back in the garden that you cannot see
it. As this is a relatively small cycad, it should be no
more than six to eight feet from a vantage point to properly see
and enjoy the plant.
Availability: We
typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to
coning sized specimens. At any given time we should have
at least a hundred of this species available. The sizes
from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered. Larger
plants can be delivered by truck.
Pricing:
Encephalartos horridus is a
rare species and not the cheapest. But, we offer smaller,
more affordable plants. Being a good grower in the ground,
one will have a good sized plant in not too many years.
