ENCEPHALARTOS KISAMBO
Locality:
This species comes from the wet cloud forests of
Tanzania and Kenya. They are generally present themselves
in smaller groupings or as a solitary plants on steep, wet
hillsides covered in rich, woody soil. There are small
populations which occur in rocky outcroppings and cliffs, but
they are frequently misted and rained on .
Plant Size:
This is a larger species of cycad. Stem can get
over two meters high. Leaf length can vary (depending on
exposure), but expect something between two and half to three
meters. This species tends to be solitary, but can sucker
(produce basal suckers) on rare occasions.
Other Characteristics: Encephalartos kisambo makes long leaves with
large individual leaflets. The leaflets and petioles are
armed with sharp spines. Leaf color can be a bright green
to a yellow/green color. This species is quite tropical in
appearance, as you could imagine from its habitat. Female
cones are a beautiful golden orange color, and male cones are a
bright canary yellow.
Culture: This species can tolerate full coastal sun,
but prefers to be in partial or filtered sunlight. For
inland and desert areas, I recommend filtered light or shade.
This species is one of the few Encephalartos that does
like water, but can tolerate going dry for a couple weeks.
A rich, acidic, loamy soil would be ideal for this species.
Landscape Usage:
This species is showy
and certainly has a presence of its own. It is most usable
in a tropical setting, but can work in gardens with established
canopies as well. As it is large and spiny,
it is not recommended to place this species too close to any
walkways or seating.
Availability: We
typically can offer some sizes of this rare species.
Sometimes we'll have available larger plants. You'll have
to call for present specimen availability. The sizes from
seedlings to 5 gallon size are easily mail ordered.
Pricing:
Encephalartos kisambo is a fairly affordable rare
cycad. We usually have an excellent selection of many
sizes.
