ENCEPHALARTOS LEBOMBOENSIS

THE LEBOMBO CYCAD

GREEN MEDIUM TO LARGE CYCAD

SUN LOVING IN MOST AREAS

by Phil & Jesse Bergman

A Brief Introduction of the Species

Introduction

This green cycad species is native to the Lebombo Mountains in South Africa. It is most closely related to Encephalartos senticosus, a similar plant found further north in the habitat area.  It is a medium to large cycad with potential for twenty feet of height in several centuries.  Comments below include information on this species and how to grow it in the garden.

ENCEPHALARTOS LEBOMBOENSIS

ENCEPHALARTOS LEBOMBOENSIS

Locality:
This species is native to the northern part of eastern Mpumalanga province, South Africa. It can also be found along the borders Mozambique and within the northern Lebombo (which is this species name sake) mountains of Swaziland. This species has a relatively small area of distribution, though it stretches through multiple countries.

Plant Size:  Though generally considered a small to medium sized species, plants can reach heights of six to seven meters over a few centuries.  Leaves can range from one and a half to two meters depending on their exposure and will not exceed a height of about two meters in one's lifetime.

Other Characteristics:  Encephalartos lebomboensis has a narrow leaflet which is heavily armed with sharp spines.  The petioles are armed with spines and prickles as well.  It is a comely species, which typically hold multiple ranks of leaves.  Both the male and female cones are quite attractive, and can be a yellow to a golden orange color.

Culture:  This species is well suited to sun in coastal and inland areas.  For desert climates it will need partial sun or filtered light.  It requires soil that drains well and prefers a slightly acidic pH.

Landscape Usage:  This species is showy and certainly has a presence of its own.  It is adaptable to many types of garden/landscape types.  As it is spiny, it is not recommended to place this species too close to any walkways or seating.

Availability:  We typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to coning sized specimens.  At any given time we should have at least a hundred of this species available.  The sizes from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered.  Larger plants can be delivered by truck.

Pricing:  Encephalartos lebomboensis is a rare species and fairly affordable.  If needed, we offer smaller, more less expensive plants.  Being a good grower in the ground, one will have a good sized plant in not too many years.  Examples of prices are listed below.

sized plants.  We definitely have larger sizes than shown above.

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
