ENCEPHALARTOS MSINGANUS

ENCEPHALARTOS MSINGANUS

Locality:
This species is endemic to Msinga district in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.   The habitat consists of grasslands and brush where the plant grows in rocky soil/outcroppings and cliffs.  The climate is hot and dry and gets little precipitation during the wet season in the summer.  E. msinganus is on the verge of extinction, where ever shrinking populations are small and scattered.

Plant Size:
This is a small to medium sized plant.  Leaves get about about a meter to a meter and a half in length.  Stems can reach up to three meters over the centuries, but it is rare to see anything close to that size.  This species tends to produce basal suckers.

Other Characteristics:  This species was originally called Encephalartos msinga (after its locality); this species was later formally described as Encephalartos msinganus.  The leaves on this species are relatively short, are green and generally are heavily armed on the leaflets and petioles.  There is some variability in leaf-type and spination in this species which has been observed in the wild and in cultivation.  It is quite rare to see this plant in cultivation and some make the argument that it is equally rare to some of the (very rare) Transvaal species.  Both male and female cones are a yellow to yellow/orange color.

Culture:
In coastal and inland areas, this species wants to be in sun.  For desert areas, this species should be grown in partial sun or filtered light.  It requires a soil that drains well.

Landscape Usage:
This species would work great for both tropical and more arid gardens.  It does not require a large space and tend to be very full and attractive.  You can see examples of both applications in the photos.

Availability:  We typically can offer various sizes of this rare species.  Sometimes we'll have available larger plants.  You'll have to call for present specimen availability.  The sizes from seedlings to 5 gallon size are easily mail ordered.

Pricing:  Encephalartos msinganus is a fairly rare yet a reasonably affordable species.  We usually have a good selection of many sizes.  Examples of usual sizes that are available with prices are listed below.

We have a pretty nice supply of Encephalartos msinganus.  This is a very rare green South African cycad that is threatened in the wild.  Because of this rarity, it's a bit more expensive than other green cycads. We do have a limited number of larger specimens.  On large specimens, plants are priced by caudex size and height.  If you are interested in larger specimen Encephalartos or any size cycad, contact us and we can quote over the phone or by email.  We usually have in stock some spectacular coning sized cycads for sale.

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
