ENCEPHALARTOS MUNCHII

UNIQUE SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE CYCAD

ONLY ONE HABITAT IN CENTRAL MOZAMBIQUE

BLUE AND GREEN FORMS

GREAT LANDSCAPE PLANT

by Phil & Jesse Bergman

A Brief Introduction of the Species

Introduction

This desirable and rare species is from only one native habitat locality in central Mozambique.  Mature plants are rarely over about six to seven feet tall.  There are known to be both a blue-green and blue form of this species.  Of the latter type, leaves emerge blue and retain this color with age.  This is a very attractive cycad and is a great addition to a garden.  Read below for more information on this species.

ENCEPHALARTOS MUNCHII

Locality:   This species is native to Mount Zembe in western Mozambique.  There are also populations described in Zimbabwe.  This species occurs on rocky granite grassland slopes and hills intermixed in evergreen forest and brush.  The climate is hot and wet, but can be cool and dry during the winter months.

Plant Size:  This is a medium sized plant.  Leaves tend to be about two meters (or slightly longer) in length.  Stems are often stout and get about one meter in height.  Often this species will produce many basal suckers, but can sometimes be solitary as well.

Other Characteristics:   This species (named after Raymond Munch - a prolific student and collector of this alliance) is within the "manikensis alliance" (a large alliance of closely related species which consists of 5+ species within Mozambique and Zimbabwe).  An interesting characteristic of this plant is that it is the only one of this alliance that can be blue!  It's color is quite variable in the plants can range from an olive green to a stunning blue color.  This species is armed, bearing spines one the leaflets and petioles.  E. munchii is a fast growing species, and can push up to twice in one season if the culture is ideal.  The female cones on this species are primarily green, but do have a bit of a bluish hue to them.  Male cones are a distinctive blue, green color.

Culture:  In coastal and inland areas, this species is well adapted to full or partial sun areas.  In desert areas, this species would do better in partial sun or filtered light.  Like many of the Central African species, E. munchii is tolerant of water, but requires good drainage.

Landscape Usage:  This species does take up some room.  It does not get very tall, but does get wide.  When choosing a spot for this plant, ensure that you can give it adequate light and that you have a spot where is grandeur can be appreciated!  They hold very full crowns and have leaves which will sprawl.  Incorporating them in an area where there are taller species behind them is usually a good idea.

Availability:  We often have this attractive species of Central African cycad for sale.  Anticipate we'll have smaller plants like 5g and sometimes 15g sizes as well.  Rarely we can offer a boxed specimen.

Pricing:  Encephalartos munchii is a medium priced cycad.  It is rare but somewhat affordable.  Typical prices, when available, are shown below.

Encephalartos munchii would fall into the classification of "somewhat expensive cycads".  It is a rare to see available, especially other than a seedling stage.  In the sun, it often has a "sea foam green" or blue color.   Most find it to be very attractive.  Smaller plants can be mail ordered quite easily.

Note:  All Cycads are Sold by Caudex Size, Not Container Size.
For example, a given pot size could have a smaller or very large plant in the same size pot.
This is why there are "+" signs next to prices.
But, prices above will give you an estimate of beginning prices of each size.
