ENCEPHALARTOS
POGGEI
Locality: This species is endemic
to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zaire and Angola.
The habitat is variable in that plants can be found in
grasslands, savanna mosaic and wooded areas. The
climate is hot, and can be wet (in some locals, though
others are more dry) during the summers. The soil
varies from a loamy soil to more rocky in some areas.
This species is fairly abundant in the wild and
populations are stable.
Plant Size: This is a small
to medium sized plant. The leaves get
approximately a meter and a half to almost two meters in
larger pants. Stems reach about two meters on this
species, which would take over a century. "Plants
often grow as solitary individuals but may form
extensive colonies." (Bösenberg, J.D. 2010.
Encephalartos poggei)
Other Characteristics: The
name 'poggei' comes from Paul Pogge (A German explorer
and collector) who discovered the plant in 1876. (The
Cycads, Whitelock & Benadom) This plant is
quite beautiful in tropical climates (note: this is not
a cold tolerant species, and can be difficult to grown
in subtropical areas). It makes long upright
leaves which are a blue/green color. The leaflets
are fairly long, narrow, are entire (only possessing a
spine at the tip of the leaflet) and angle away from the
caudex (stem). Petioles on the species are armed
with spines and prickles. Though armed, I would
not consider this species terribly sharp. In
tropical climates, this species will make a full
impressive looking plant. In subtropical climates,
this species tends to carry sparse crowns which are
discolored. During winter months the can defoliate
or succumb entirely to the cold. Both the male and
female cones on this species are a yellow/green to an
orange/green.
Culture: I do not recommend this
species for anywhere that freezes. For coastal and
inland areas, I recommend filtered light or shade.
I do not recommend this species for desert areas.
This species need a loamy soil that drains well.
Landscape Usage:
Primarily I recommend this species for gardens in
tropical areas or warm subtropical areas that don't
freeze. This plant will need to be below an
established canopy and will certainly burn in sun
(subtropical areas).
Availability: We,
on occasion, have this species for sale. It is
super rare and hard to find. Presently we have
no plants available. But, from time to time we do
get a plant or two into our nursery. Give us a a call
or email about the size you seek.
Pricing:
Encephalartos poggei is a very
rare species and tends to be expensive for a green leafed
species.
