ENCEPHALARTOS TRANSVENOSUS

THE MODJAJI CYCAD

by Phil Bergman

A Brief Introduction of the Species

Introduction

This is a brief introduction of this larger green cycad from the Modjaji Forest in South Africa.  With maturity, crowns of leaves are way over head with sturdy tall trunks.  A large specimen is spectacular if given room in the garden and very fast growing.

ENCEPHALARTOS TRANSVENOSUS

Locality:
Large green cycad which has a expansive distribution, from the Limpopo Province to Modjaji Forest in South Africa.  It can be found in elevations ranging from 600-1,500 meters.  Their native terrain ranges from rocky slopes, to grasslands, to densely forested areas.

Plant Size:  This cycad can become quite large after many decades, and can reach heights over thirty feet with enough time.  Leaf length can vary with exposure to sun, but expect a length somewhere between seven to ten feet.

Other Characteristics:  Emerging leaves are often covered with a fine white hair (canescent), which is maintained on mature leaves for a long period of time, though not as thick.  The leaflets are "two toned" where the top of the leaflet is dark green and the bottom is a light/limey green.  The petioles are armed as well and tend to have a light green to yellowish color.  The leaflets can bear up to ten spines, but the are not very rigid.  Therefore they are less "pokey" than some Encephalartos.  Male cones are a yellow color where the female cones are more a of golden brown color.  Both sexes are needed to make pure species seeds..

Culture:  Along the coast this species tolerates full sun or part day sun.  It easily withstands a freeze and has an absolute cold tolerance down to about 22-23 degrees F.  It prefers good draining soil - though is more tolerant of water than some Encephalartos.  It can easily be grown on the patio if given adequate light.  Desert areas should grow this species in filtered light.

Landscape Usage:  It is best to give this species plenty of room in the garden.  It makes a spectacular specimen plant.  Plants can form suckering offsets but usually have one main primary stem.  Trunks can branch.  In bright sun the leaves may not be as long as in lesser sun.  Plants usually throw new leaves once a year during the growing season.

Availability:  We typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to coning sized specimens.  At any given time we should have at least a hundred of this species available.  The sizes from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered.  Larger plants can be delivered by truck.

Pricing:  Encephalartos transvenosus is a rare species but for a South African species is affordable. Examples of prices are listed below.
