ENCEPHALARTOS VILLOSUS
Locality: Of the South African species,
Encephalartos villosus has one of the largest
distributions. It can be found in the Eastern Cape,
KwaZulu-Natal and into Swaziland. Generally this species
grows in forested areas with moderate to high levels of rainfall
annually.
Plant Size: This species is small to
medium sized. The leaf length is two to two and a half
meters. The trunk on this species is mostly subterranean,
meaning you will see minimal trunk above ground (if at all).
Stems are typically solitary, but this species can produce basal
suckers. Some can become quite dense with pups, but this
varies from plant to plant.
Other Characteristics: This is a very
tropical looking, shade/filtered light Encephalartos.
They are good growers and have attractive crowns of leaves.
The leaflets are armed, but as the leaflet tissues are soft the
plant isn't very sharp, or pokey. The petioles are armed
with long prickles and spines, but you will only have to contend
with these while trimming. The female cones are a
remarkable golden yellow, where as the males cones are more of a
pale yellow.
Culture: This species prefers shade or filetered light. Being a sub-canopy plant they are water
tolerant, but do not want to be in boggy soil (like many of the Encephalartos). They prefer a good draining
topsoil that is a bit acidic.
Landscape Usage: This species is well suited
to established gardens that have some shade. They
certainly add a tropical element to any landscape and really
stand out with their beautiful cones. As this species does
get some size to it, give it adequate room. I would
suggest at least a meter between this species and another plant
(excluding ground cover and miniature species).
Availability: We
typically can offer sizes from seedlings or small plants up to
coning sized specimens. At any given time we should have
at least a hundred of this species available. The sizes
from bands up to 15g can be easily mail ordered. Larger
plants can be delivered by truck.
Pricing:
Encephalartos arenariuis is a
rare species and not the cheapest. But, we offer smaller,
more affordable plants. Being a good grower in the ground,
one will have a good sized plant in not too many years.
