ACANTHOPHOENIX RUBRA

THE RED PALM OR THE BARBEL PALM

SPINY SINGLE TRUNK PALM FROM THE ISLANDS OF MAURITIUS AND REUNION

This single trunk palm is quite uncommon in enthusiast yards.  This is probably because it's so difficult to find but also because it only takes temperatures just below a freeze but not much lower.  So, one needs an ideal climate to succeed with this species.  Juvenile plants like the one shown below have prominent spines on the trunk and petioles.  However, with age these disappear.  There is a red color to the leaf stems and sometimes the leaves. Mature height is expected to be ten to fifteen feet.  The trunk is thin, about 4 to 6 inches.  There is a reddish crown shaft.  It would like some sun but not full sun when small.

Regular price 5 gallon $135
Sale price this size $80

ACTINOKENTIA DIVARICATA
THE MINIATURE FLAME THROWER PALM
PREFERS FILTERED LIGHT

This thin trunked, medium sized palm comes from New Caledonia where it lives in habitat below overhead tree canopy.  It is very slow growing.  It has a trunk diameter, at maturity, of about three inches.  It has a cream colored crown shaft and a sparse crown of five to six leaves.  Newly emerging leaves are often red in color.  Cold tolerance is into the low twenties, F.  I've known this species to grow in the San Francisco Bay area.  We have a very limited supply of Actinokentia.  Of note, this is a monotypic genus with only one species in the genus.

ADONIDIA - VEITCHIA MERRILLII
HYBRID
POTENTIAL TO GROW SOMETHING THAT CAN'T BE GROWN HERE
VERY EXCITING – NOT PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE

There is an interesting story behind the plants I'm showing you here.  About four years ago, we got some seeds from a botanical garden that were labeled as Veitchia merrillii (aka Adonidia merrillii).  The seeds we got were thought to be pure Veitchia merrillii.  The seeds germinated but about half of the plants produced didn’t appear to be pure merrillii.   It ends up that these different plants are a hybrid of a Veitchia merrillii crossed with something else.  Most likely it's with another species of Veitchia that are more cold tolerant.  This is to our customer's benefit as this means perhaps they can grow these and end up with a smaller palm that resembles V. merrillii.  These should tolerate full sun.  Cold hardiness is unknown but should be below a freeze.  We only have a few left.

Regular price 5 gallon $135
Sale price this size $95

ALLAGOPTERA ARENARIA
THE SEASHORE OR BEACH PALM
FULL SUN, COLD HARDY, DWARF

This species is native to Brazil and lives near the ocean, often on sandy dunes near beaches.  In general, it is very slow growing.  Mature height is about six feet.  The leaves are plumose and fluffy.  It is a single trunk species although it has the appearance of being a suckering species.  It loves sun and heat.  If you need a small palm for full sun that you can see over, this is a great species for you.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX "TERACARPA"

THE BEST KING PALM EVER!
READ WHY BELOW

This is a type of King Palm that comes from a large specimen in Phil's personal garden.  We named it "teracarpa" - meaning "big body".  No one has been able to identify it.  It has a much thicker trunk, gets taller than the normal King Palm, is a more vigorous grower and does not brown tip in sun.  In Phil's garden it towers over regular Kings nearby and is much greener and prettier.  There's a hint of silver on the back of the leaves and seeds are larger than normal King Palm seeds.  All who have bought it say it's one of the best palms in their garden.  It does not brown tip in the sun and is more resistant to wind.  Cold tolerant to about 25 degrees F. by estimation.

ATTALEA COHUNE
THE COHUNE PALM
TALL PALM, UPRIGHT LONG LEAVES

The Cohune Palm is a large palm.  But, it is also a very slow growing palm.  Native to regions stretching from Mexico down into many countries in Central America, it is known to get forty to eighty feet tall with leaves that are 30 feet long.  They are generally held in an upright position.  The crown can be thirty feet wide.  Mature basal trunk diameter is two feet.  Leaves are green and this palm has no crown shaft.  Most feel it is a marginal grower here in Southern CA with a cold tolerance of about a freeze.  But, some are growing it here and claim it can tolerate temperatures into the mid-twenties.  It wants full sun.  It is very difficult to find. This palm wants full sun.

BRAHEA DECUMBENS

DWARF, BLUE, SUCKERING SUN PALM
VERY LIMITED SUPPLY AVAILABLE

This easy to grow Mexican fan palm hardly ever gets over five feet tall.  In the sun, it gets super blue, suckers and doesn't have a large footprint in the garden.  Surprisingly, when young, plants are green in color.  But, outdoors in the sun, I guarantee that they'll turn blue.  Leaves are small compared to other Braheas.  It is rare and, unfortunately, very slow growing.  I am showing here our 5 gallon plants which are about 5-6 years old.  They are quite old for their containers.  This species will take sun in all areas and does not like shade.  It does well in desert areas.  Cold tolerance is about 17 to 18 degrees.  Note:  When sold out, it'll be a long time before we offer them again.  We only have a few 5g left.

This good looking fan palm comes from southern Mexico as well as various countries in Central America.  There is variability in this species: Some plants are green, others blue.  Some specimens get to twenty feet, others remain shorter. Over time, leaf bases fall away to give a smooth trunk.  This species likes part sun or full sun along the coast and is cold hardy to about 20 degrees F.  On sale is our 15 gallon size but we also have 5 gallons available.

BRAHEA ELEGANS
THE FRANCESHI PALM
MEDIUM SIZE MATURE

You don't see this species offered that often.  It is native to the Sonora and Sinaloa areas of Mexico.   It has green costo-palmate leaves that are divided.  Trunk diameter is a pleasant 12 inches with a rough surface.  Mature height is ten to twenty feet.  Regarding culture, it is not quite as cold hardy as other Brahea species like armata, clara and decumbens.  I'd suspect it may go down to the lower 20’s or perhaps upper teens F.  It does best in full sun.  We just got in a limited number of nice 5g plants which we’re putting on special.  They are easy to ship.

BRAHEA NITIDA
FLAT GREEN LEAF
MEDIUM SIZE MATURE

This interesting fan palm is native to Mexico down to Guatemala.  It attains a height of thirty feet with a stout trunk of one foot in diameter.  The most attractive thing about this palm are its circular leaves, with only partial division of the segments. It takes filtered light to full sun on the coast.  Cold hardiness is into the mid to low twenties F.  The leaves are a shiny green and the petioles are essentially un-armed.

BRAHEA SPECIES "SUPER SILVER"
BLUE FAN PALM FROM MEXICO
THINNER TRUNK THAN BRAHEA ARMATA

Shown here is a 5 gallon plant of a Brahea species from Mexico that is presently known as "Brahea species Super Silver".   Undoubtedly someone will describe it in the near future and attach a scientific name.  Seeds have been available only twice.  It is a blue plant but doesn't show the blue until older.  It wants full hot sun and would be perfect for the desert.  I suspect the cold tolerance is similar to Brahea armata, about 15 degrees F.  But, compared to the later, this species trunk is much thinner and it is faster growing.  But, the blue color is just as intense.  Shown here is the 5g size.  Limited numbers.  Habitat photo by TS RPS.

BURRETIOKENTIA VIEILLARDII
THE TIGER PALM - STRIPED CROWN SHAFT
ANOTHER SPECIES OF THIS GREAT GENUS

This species of Burretiokentia comes from the highest elevation of the three species of this genus from New Caledonia.  It grows at altitudes of almost 4000 feet.  It has a thin trunk of about six inches and can get to sixty feet tall.  It has a prominently bulging crown shaft that is known for it's diagonally dark markings.  Thus, the name "Tiger Palm".  The crown shaft is reddish-brown in color and has prominent striations as shown below.  Younger trunks are green with rings unless exposed to sun.  The crown of this species is full and round with upright and arching leaves.  As with all New Caledonian species, ample water is crucial. The size on special are summer repots in 15 gallon pots.  Limited supply.  We also have some 5g this species that are available, shown second photo.

BUTIA PARAGUENSIS
COLD HARDY SHORTER PINNATE PALM
RARELY AVAILABLE FOR SALE

This single trunk pinnate palm is from Brazil and Paraguay.  I think the most notable thing is that it doesn't overly tall.  Almost always, this species is under ten feet overall.  Rarely it is taller.  So, it might be perfect when you need a smaller tree.  It is super cold hardy and likes full sun.  Cold hardiness should be similar to the Pindo Palm, about 15 degrees F.   We haven’t offered this size of plants for about ten years.  These would be simple to mail order.

CARPOXYLON MACROSPERMUM
DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS CROWN SHAFTED PALM
NATIVE NATIVE TO VANUATU
EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND

This extremely gorgeous crown shafted palm was introduced into the cultivation market perhaps 25 years ago.  At that time and since, availability of seeds has very limited and seed prices high - as much as several dollars per seed.  This is a single trunk palm with very arching green leaves and a lime green colored crown shaft.  The trunk is medium sized and about 10 inches thick.  Overall height is 15 to 20 feet. Leaves are keeled and leaflets continue nearly all the way to the base of the petiole.  The base of the trunk is slightly swollen.  The difficulty in growing this species is the lack of its ability to tolerate a freeze.  Tolerated low temperatures are 33 to 34 degrees.  With this said, some people in warmer microclimates have had success in growing this beautiful palm.  It wants acclimation into full sun.  The mature photos are c/o a friend in Vanuatu and are from a private garden.  This is an extremely difficult species to find for sale.

This slow growing clustering Fishtail Palm is known for mature heights of eight to ten feet, narrow trunks and exotic green leaves as shown.  It is native to China and Viet Nam.  It is a bi-pinnate palm with green leaflets that are jagged at their distal margin.  See the photo below to examine the leaflets.  Like all Caryotas, each stem is monocarpic and will die after flowering.  But, other stems will grow and replace it.  Cold tolerance appears to be a bit below a freeze.  This is an extremely rare palm that you never see for sale.  The garden photos is c/o Kyle Wicomb.  We only have a few of these.

A CLIMBING UNDERSTORY PALM
THIS VARIETY KNOWN TO HAVE SOLID LEAVES LONGER

Chamaedorea elatior is an interesting palm because it has the ability to climb.  It does this by a curved end to the leaves - like a thumb or forefinger grabbing something.  It is native to southern Mexico and Central America.  When juvenile, plants have a simple bifed leaf.  With age, this leaves transforms into a pinnate leaf.  But, there's a variety that holds on to the rather large simple, bifed leaves longer.  The plants on sale are this desirable latter form.  Leaf color is green.  Mature height can be over 15 feet with support.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.  This is a rare palm to acquire.

CHAMAEDOREA GEONOMIFORMIS
THE NECKLACE PALM
DWARF SIMPLE LEAF SHADE PALM
NEVER OVER 3 FEET TALL

Chamaedorea geonomiformis is a very rare and small single trunk palm with simple bifed leaves.  Trunks are thin and about 3/8 inch in diameter.  Leaves are usually under a foot long and green in color.  Leaf texture is thick.  This is a sought after species by enthusiasts because it's so small and "cute".  Mature height is usually under three feet.  It wants filtered light and is cold tolerant into the mid-twenties F.  We have very limited numbers of this palm.

CHAMAEDOEA SCHIPPII
UNBELIEVABLE RARE SUCKERING SHADE PALM
FIRST TIME AVAILABLE IN 30 YEARS

Taxonomically, this species of Chamaedorea is an accepted species.  Unfortunately, this species disappeared from the market about 30 years ago.  This is a suckering green leaf understory species that gets a mature height of twelve to fourteen feet and have an appearance similar to C. costaricana.  But, the leaves are longer and the trunks are thicker.  Trunks remain vertical and don't usually lean.  This species has historically been used to make some of the more interesting Chamaedorea hybrids including the famous "Irving Cantor" cross.  They were chosen for hybridization because of their strong vertical trunks.  Cold tolerance is into the twenties F.  We are offering a limited number of small seedlings for sale.  This is the first time we've had them in 25 years!

CYPHOSPERMA BALANSAE
SUPER RARE NEW CALEDONIAN PALM
SHORT BLACK CROWN SHAFT – MEDIUM HEIGHT

This unbelievably rare palm species is native to mountainous areas of New Caledonia.  There are several hallmarks for identifying this species.  It has stiff, upright green leaves.  The leaves do not arch.  There is a short crown shaft that, over time, turns almost black.  This black color can spread onto the trunk.  Mature height is over 30 feet in an ideal climate but often it's shorter than this.  It likes humidity and warmer winter temperatures.  So, it would not be an ideal species for far interior areas.  Cold tolerance is down to about a freeze.  This is another extremely rare palm that is near impossible to find.  I’d recommend a bit of sun (after acclimation) or strong filtered light.  Let it grow into the sun over time.

DYPSIS CARLSMITHII
ORIGINALLY CALLED "DYPSIS STUMPY"
ATTRACTIVE AND DIFFERENT SINGLE TRUNK MADAGASCAR PALM
MEDIUM HEIGHT - THICK TRUNK

The original specimen of this species was found in the garden of the now-late Don Carlsmith on the Big Island, HI.  Friend Jeff Marcus grew this species from seeds of this single plant and, thirty years ago, referred to it as Dypsis "Stumpy".  With the assistance of John Dransfield at Kew Gardens in the U.K., it was later given the name of Dypsis carlsmithii.

This is a medium sized, crown shafted pinnate palm with upright leaves that are green and arch at their ends.  Leaves are keeled and the crown shaft is green with hints of orange.  It was called "stumpy" by Jeff because the trunk is thick compared to many other Dypsis.  Trunks are ringed and 12 to 14 inches thick.  Mature height is twenty feet and it wants part day or full sun along the coast.  Cold tolerance is into the upper 20's F. This relatively recent introduction to the palm market is from Madagascar.  It is a suckering palm that gets to a height of about twelve feet with 4 inch thick trunks.  Leaves are green, keeled and recurved at their ends.  The proximal leaf stems and the crown shaft are covered with red colored hairs.  Leaflets are thin and prominently veined.  It is a sun palm along the coast and has a cold hardiness below a freeze, probably into the upper twenties F.  Most enthusiasts have found this palm to be a good grower.  The garden specimen below is from the garden of Matt Bradford, La Mesa, CA.  The garden photo is by him

This super rare and very slow growing palm is native to a few isolated areas of Madagscar.  It is critically endangered.  It is a medium to tall mature height palm with estimates that it can get to 35 or 40 feet tall. The trunk is thin for its mature height - being 8 to 10 inches thick.  The crown shaft is about 3 feet in length and covered with a dense white tomentum.  Leaves are 8 feet long or more and pinnate.  Leaf stems have sharp ventral edges and a green-brown tomentum.  Cold hardiness is uncertain but it certainly seems to take a freeze in our area.  The photograph of the white crown shaft is c/o JS.  It is very seldom that we offer this species.  The great second photo is c/o TS at RPS.

For quite a few years, palm enthusiasts have been familiar with this rare species from Madagascar.  It has been called "Dypsis species bef".  But, to this day, it has no accepted botanical name that I am aware of.  It has a rather narrow ringed trunk with arching and keeled green leaves.  The crown shaft is white.  It is medium sized with a height of about 20 feet.  The garden specimen is c/o Steve S., PalmPedia.  As a nursery plant it has soft green relaxed leaves with hanging leaflets.  But, when older, it is firmly keeled.  Five of the six photos below show the 2 gallon size on sale.  These were Winter repots.  The garden shot is a double by Steve of Australia c/o palmpedia.

MEDIUM SIZED SINGLE TRUNK PALM
THICK TRUNK - LIKES SUN

This single trunk palm from Madagascar got it's common name above because sometimes seen are white spots on the leaf bases that resemble the insect "mealy bug".  The trunk is stout with a white crown shaft that changes to a brown green with age.  Leaves are initial keeled and, with age, relax to a flat leaf.   Leaf bases are a red/brown color with the white markings sometimes seen.  Sometimes the new leaf is a marked red color and very impressive.  It's a full sun species along the coast with a cold tolerance that should be below a freeze.  But, the exact cold tolerance is not establishe.  The specimen photo is by BGL.

EUTERPE EDULIS
A FORM OF THE "ACAI" BERRY PALM
MEDIUM SIZE PALM WITH THIN TRUNK

This palm species makes seeds which are the source of the "Acai berry juice".  This species makes large numbers of dark purple seeds, so it's no surprise that it is loaded with antioxidant properties and someone would market it.  Euterpe edulis is a fast growing, thin trunked, pinnate palm with a long colorful crown shaft.  Crown shaft color varies from green to a mahogany brown.  This species is native to Brazil and northern Argentina.  It is cold hardy into the mid-twenties F.  It prefers to start as a younger plant in strong filtered light and work its way into the sun

Many of you may know of Euterpe edulis, a thin solitary palm with a long green crown shaft.  However, in Southern Brazil and possibly northern Argentina, there is a form of this species that has a prominent orange crown shaft.  Considered by some to be "Euterpe sp. espiritosantensis", others feel it is a variety of E. edulis.  It has a think trunk and a three foot long crownshaft.  It wants to be grown in filtered light and to work its way into partial direct sunlight.  Cold tolerance is about a freeze.  This is a slow growing palm and near impossible to find available.  Mature photo is by RPS.

HOWEA BELMOREANA
THE SENTRY OR UMBRELLA PALM
THE RARE TYPE OF KENTIA PALM

This species of single trunk, "non-crown shafted" pinnate palm is native to medium elevations on Lord Howe Island.  At one time is was possible to import seeds of this desirable palm along with Hedyscepe and Lepidorrhachis.  Because of conservation laws, the island can no longer legally export seeds or seedlings.  This has created a shortage of the more rare species from this locality.   Howea belmoreana is different from the Howea forsteriana (classic Kentia Palm) as it has curved leaves and an umbrella-shaped crown.  It also might be a bit more cold hardy.  It prefers filtered light or a little sun inland and can take more sun right on the coast.  Cold tolerance is about 24 degrees F.  Of note, if interested, we also have a massive 25 gallon specimen for sale.

SINGLE TRUNK - CAN TAKE FULL COASTAL SUN

This popular single trunk palm is tropical appearing, has green leaves and gets to a height of thirty feet in thirty years.  Leaves and leaflets tend to droop.  It also makes a great patio or interior palm.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.  In inland areas, it wants filtered light or part day sun.  Of note, it is often planted with several in a pot.  For this reason, people think it suckers, but it does not.

THIN TRUNK - VERY ELEGANT

This is a single trunk, crown shafted pinnate palm native to New Caledonia.  Many feel it's the prettiest species of this genus.  It gets to a height of about 40 feet or more and has a thin trunk.  Leaves are upright, green and arched.  They are keeled and green in color.  The crown shaft is a copper color, covered with a white wax.  It can be grown in some sun, depending on where you live.  It's probably best to start it in bright filtered light and let it work its way into overhead sun.  Growth rate is good, comparable or faster than K. oliviformis.  Cold tolerance is down to about a freeze.  This is an extremely difficult species to find for sale nowadays.  Second photo c/o TS RPS.

THE CAPE RIVER LIVISTONA – THE WOOLY LIVISTONA
TALL FAN PALM WITH THIN TRUNK

This Australian fan palm is a very interesting species and also known as the "Wooly Livistona".  It is apparently threatened in habitat.   In the northeastern part of Australia it lives at an altitude of 200 meters.   It reaches a height of over fifty feet with a trunk that’s about a foot thick.  Leaves are bluish or blue-green, stiff and waxy.  Leaf stems have barbs and leaves extend out six to eight feet.  It is most similar to Livistona marie but, by report, has larger purple fruit.  It is one of the most rare species of this genus.  It enjoys full hot sun.  Exact cold tolerance is unclear but probably into the mid-twenties F.  We have a limited number of 15g plants. LIVISTONA NITIDA
TALL PALM WITH THINNER TRUNK
NATIVE TO QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
FAIRLY QUICK GROWING

This palm species is a fan palm that is native to Queensland.  We've found it to be quick growing.  It'll attain a mature height of 60 feet or more.  Trunk diameter is about 12 to 18 inches.  Its leaf stems are armed as shown here.  It prefers full sun, even in desert areas.  I've read reports of it tolerating snow in Georgia.  I'd estimate cold tolerance to be at least 20 degrees F.  The 5g are very large and nice size - ready for repot or planting in the garden.  When mature, the leaflets droop downwards.  This species was previously known as "Carnavon Gorge".  Habitat photo c/o M.C. in Australia.

Taxonomists have reclassified Lytocaryum into the genus of Syagrus in recent years.  For forty years I've known this genus as Lytocaryum and shall continue to use this genus name.  This species is native to Brazil but is bigger, a bit more stout in the trunk and somewhat taller than the similar Lytocaryum wedellianum.  But, it is still a delicate and soft palm that prefers understory filtered light sites in the garden.  The two garden shot below, c/o Palmpedia.  Leaves are green, leaflets are thin and fine and mature height is about 6 to 7 feet.  Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F.

PINANGA CORONATA
SUPER BEAUTIFUL IVORY CANE PALM
SUCKERING FILTERED LIGHT EXOTIC PALM

This exotic suckering pinnate palm is native to Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi.  It has thin trunks that can have a blonde color.  Leaves are somewhat narrow, green in color with an unarmed petiole.  Mature height in CA is usually about twelve feet although in the tropics they get much taller.  They like filtered light but can take a bit of morning sun.  Too much sun here will burn them.  Cold hardiness is into the upper 20's F.  I had a mature specimen that produced large numbers of purple fruit for years.  This species is similar to Pinanga kuhlii but has more repetitive regular leaves and less mottling to the leaflets.  Of note, some taxonomists consider these two species synonymous.

This is a single trunk species from Brazil.  Polyandrococos is a monotypic genus with only one species.  More recently a taxonomist grouped it with Allagoptera. Its height is variable, depending on conditions.  However, some trees can get up to thirty feet tall.  The trunk is medium sized, about twelve inches thick, with no crown shaft.  The leaves are eight to ten feet long and very silver underneath. It also has gorgeous clusters or orange colored (mature) seeds that are the color of orange sherbet ice cream.  This is a very rare plant and hard to find.

PRESTOEA MONTANA
AKA PRESTOEA ACUMINATA
NATIVE TO PUERTO RICO

Prestoea is a genus that is very closely related to another palm genus, Euterpe.  It is found in the Caribbean, Central and South America.  Essentially all Euterpe are crown shafted palms.  Many of the Prestoea are not.  There are also distinctions between the flowers of these two genera.  Also, many of the Prestoea are suckering.  But, there is one that is single trunk.  This is Prestoea montana, native to mountainous areas of Puerto Rico.  The hallmarks of this species are its wide and very shiny green leaves, its somewhat slender trunk and its overall beautiful appearance.  Plant heights can reach forty feet or more.  This species should be grown in part day sun or filtered light.  I'd estimate its cold tolerance is down to about a freeze or a bit less.  Note that this species has historically been known as "Prestoea montana" but in more recent years has been considered a variety of P. acuminata.

GREEN LEAVES, WHITE STEMS

As most of you know by now, the only native palm genus on the Hawaiian Islands is Pritchardia.  Culturally, we've found the Hawaiian species of this genus to be far superior growing in our area of Southern California compared to South Pacific species such as Pritchardia pacifica.  The latter doesn't do well here at all.  Pritchardia hillebrandii is felt to probably be native to Molokai.  Mature, this species makes a medium sized palm up to about twenty feet tall.  Remember, there are some Pritchardias that never get over ten feet.  Trunks of this species are an estimated 8 inches thick.  Leaves have a gentle roll in cross-section.  There’s a lot of white tomentum on the leaf stems and inner crown of this species.  This species can take full coastal sun.  If you are far inland, give it a few hours of sun or strong filtered light.  Cold hardiness is into the mid to upper twenties F.

BIG FLAT LEAVES - RUSTY SILVER UNDERNEATH

I remember visiting Lyon Arboretum in Honolulu years ago and talking to the late botanist Ray Baker.  This Garden is west of the city, nestled right next to the foot of a range of mountains.  Ray was responsible for the fantastic collection of palms at the Garden.  Ray pointed up to the mountains towering over the garden.  He told me that "right up there. That's where I collected Pritchardia martii."  Native habitats for this species are on steep cliffs at elevations of 300 to 2000 feet.  It can get to a height of thirty feet.  The trunk is also a bit thick.  The leaves are wide, very flat and a rusty-silver below.  This palm is super attractive and any palm enthusiast will love it.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  It takes coastal sun or part day sun.

RAVENEA HILDEBRANDTII
A MINIATURE RAVENEA SPECIES
NATIVE TO THE COMORES ISLANDS

This species is often felt to be from Madagascar but is in fact native to the Comores Islands off the coast of Madagascar.  Domestically, it is rare to see one of these over about eight feet in height although they have the capability to get to fifteen feet.  The trunk is thin, usually about four inches.  Leaves are shorter, averaging five feet or so.  Cold tolerance is perhaps into the upper 20's F.  If you have really mild sun, it may take full sun.  But, in general and for most areas, I'd recommend morning sun or bright filtered light.  If you like smaller pinnate trees, this species should be perfect for you.  Just so you know, because of rarity, this species tends to cost more than other Raveneas available.  On the garden photo below, the Ravenea is in the foreground with a Sabal behind it.

This species of Ravenea is from both the west and eastern sides of the Island of Madagascar.  It was named after a river on the island.  It is a large and elegant pinnate palm with heights reportedly up to one hundred feet.  Trunk diameter is one foot.  It grows at elevations from sea level to six thousand feet in both dry and moist native habitats.  When younger, this species has flat erect leaves that go straight upwards.  However, with age, this species produces leaves that are keeled and curve downwards at the ends.  When mature the overall crown is hemispherical with the leaves in the upper portion of the circle.  Because of its large size, this plant should be considered a major landscape item and not a companion plant.  After acclimation, most grow this species in full sun along the coast.  Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.  They like moisture but need good draining soil.  The last photo below is a juvenile tree, picture taken by T.S. from RPS.  This is a difficult species to find.  But, there are enthusiasts in Southern California growing it with no problems.

REAL COLLECTOR PLANTS

ONE & SOME 2 GALLON ON SALE

At our website we have an article about these "Gems of the Orient".  Most are clones or varieties of Rhapis excelsa are under six feet mature.  They are considered dwarf fan palms.  As they don't make variegated seed/seedlings (this is a genetic mutation which is rarely expressed through seed), the only way to get one is to get divisions off a larger plant.  We have an assortment of sizes and are putting our one and some 2 gallons on sale.  These can be mail ordered.  They grow inside the home or in filtered light outdoors and are fairly cold hardy.  The first photo shows the leaf of an older, mature plant.  Of note, we have 1 gallon to 20 gallon plants for sale.  The plants on sale are small with some vertical trunk on some.  All are from divisions off a mother plant.  Please note these are near impossible to find.  The last two photos are of the leaves of plants we've had at the nursery.

GROUPING OF LEAFLETS

This is a dwarf green cycad that is native to Mexico.  It is known for grouping of the leaflets.  By this I mean several leaflets on the stem together with a gap before the next group of leaflets.  The individual leaflets are wide.  Plant caudexes never get too large - an 8 to 10 inch would be the biggest you'll see.  They can sucker.  Leaves are green and overall height is rarely over six feet.  They prefer filtered light.  Cold hardy is estimated to be to the low 20's F.  We're putting plants with about 3 inches caudexes on sale in citrus pot and 5 gallon pots as shown below.  Some are near coning size.  We do have both smaller and larger available.

CERATOZAMIA ZARAGOZAE - FEMALE
INCREDIBLY RARE CYCAD FROM MEXICO
THIN GREEN LEAFLETS
LEAVES THAT TWIST ON THEIR AXIS

Recently we obtained from a private collection this coning female cluster of Ceratozamia zaragosae.  It required digging.  We put it in a 25 gallon pot. It should recover in time and show more leaves.  It has eight individual caudexes ranging is size from about 3 inches to a taller 5 inch stem.  Some of the caudexes are difficult to see in the photo.  This is an almost impossible cycad to obtain.  A female plant means one could get pollen and set seeds.  If this plant doesn’t sell, we are going to divide it up into individual single caudex plants.

This cycad is native to Mexico.  It is not a large cycad.  Leaves are usually under 3 feet long.  Leaves have brown wooly hairs on the stems, are minimally armed with three to five leaves per caudex.  Leaflets are thin.  The leaves twirl (twist) along their axis.  This is a good way to recognize the plant. It is similar to C. norstogii which has longer leaves.  It is best grown in strong filtered light or a few hours of sun.

Obviously, this is not an inexpensive plant.  But, we're putting it on a special sale.  It's the only plant of this species we have and should go to someone who appreciates rare cycads.   It is for domestic usage in the U.S. only.

ACTUAL NICE SPECIMEN FOR SALE

This Cycas species has one of the largest distributions of any cycads.  It is found in many Asian countries from India to Vietnam.  Despite its vast distribution, this species has steadily been declining in its native habitats.  It is (along the coast) sun loving and can eventually become over fifteen feet tall.  Another interesting thing about this species is that it can vary in color from a dark green color to an almost blue color.  This species is a moderate to fast grower and is cold tolerant down to the mid 20’s F.  The actual plant below is in a 7 gallon container and has a caudex that is five to six inches.

SILVER BLUE SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
THIN LEAFLETS - SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE MATURE
5 GALLON PLANTS - CAUDEX 3 INCHES

This species comes from the Gauteng and Mpumalanga regions of South Africa.  It is a small to medium sized species.  Encephalartos lanatus have short leaves that scarcely exceed a meter.  Their stems can reach about a meter and half in a few centuries.  Plants are almost always solitary, but they can occasionally produce basal suckers (very rare and very few).  The name 'lanatus' is derived from the Latin word meaning "wooly".  The petioles, newly emerging leaves and cones are all 'wooly'.  The leaves on this species emerge a pale green with a thick wool-like tomentum (plant hair).  They are a pale green when they first emerge.  As the leaves age, they transition to a powdery silver/white color.  The leaflets and petioles on this species are unarmed and are mildly pokey.  The leaflets are thin.  This species has to have soil that drains very well.  It also need to be in sun for coastal and inland areas.  If you plant it in the shade, it will slowly die.  For desert areas, sun is a possibility but you can grow them in partial sun to filtered light.

ENCEPHALARTOS LAURENTIANUS
LONG LEAFED & LARGE CENTRAL AFRICAN GREEN CYCAD
INDIVIDUAL LEAVES UP TO 209 FEET LONG!
EXTREMELY RARE SPECIES - HARD TO FIND

This species is endemic to the Kasongo-Linda districts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.  The climate is quite hot and humid.  This is one of the largest cycads on the planet, and has longer leaves than any other species of known cycad.  Leaves can grow in excess of seven meters and their fat stems can grow a staggering height of over fifteen meters (over hundreds of years).  Before this plant ever makes a foot of trunk, leaves will streak into the air, dwarfing much around them.  Old specimens can easily be mistaken for palms as they are so large and tropical looking!  In all areas, this species requites filtered light or shade.  In the tropics or exceptionally humid areas, you can get away with growing this species in sun.  It is not very frost tolerant (truly a tropical species of Encephalartos).  The plants on special are in citrus pots and have a caudex size of 2.5 to 3 inches.

ENCEPHALARTOS MUNCHII
UNIQUE SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE CYCAD
UNIQUE CENTRAL AFRICAN HABITATS
BLUE FORM ON SPECIAL - CITRUS POT SIZE

This species is native to Mount Zembe in western Mozambique.  There are also populations described in Zimbabwe.  This is a medium sized plant.  Leaves tend to be about two meters (or slightly longer) in length.  Stems are often stout and get about one meter in height.  This species (named after Raymond Munch - a prolific student and collector of this alliance) is within the "manikensis alliance" (a large alliance of closely related species which consists of 5+ species within Mozambique and Zimbabwe).  An interesting characteristic of this plant is that it is the only one of this alliance that can be blue!  Its color is quite variable in the plants can range from an olive green to a stunning blue color.  This species is armed, bearing spines one the leaflets and petioles.  E. munchii is a fast growing species, and can push up to twice in one season if the culture is ideal. In coastal and inland areas, this species is well adapted to full or partial sun areas.  In desert areas, this species would do better in partial sun or filtered light.  The plants on special are in citrus pots with caudex of 2 to 3 inches.  They are the blue form and will show their color outdoors in sun.

ENCEPHALARTOS NATALENSIS
GREEN, MEDIUM SIZED SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD
DURABLE AND FAST GROWING SPECIES

This versatile green cycad is a mainstay of every cycad collection.  There's not a cycad enthusiast who's not growing this species.  It is native to the Eastern Cape in South Africa.  There are quite a few sub-varieties – all a bit different.  So, when you see an Encephalartos natalensis in a garden, it may look a bit different than the next one you see.  Trunks get up to twenty feet in a century or two.  Leaves are five to eight feet long, straight or minimally arched, and more compact in bright sun.  Growth rate is medium to fast.  I'd consider this a medium to large species.  Cold tolerance is about 22 degrees F.  The plants on special are in citrus pots with caudexes of about 3 inches.

ENCEPHALARTOS WHITELOCKII
LARGER CENTRAL AFRICAN CYCAD
LONG UPRIGHT GREEN LEAVES
SALE ON VERY LARGE 5 GALLON PLANTS WITH 4.5 INCH CAUDEXES

This unique and larger cycad is native to Uganda.  In fact, at one point it was called the "Uganda Giant Cycad".  This is because it has leaves that extend almost straight up toward the sky and can be twelve feet long or more.  Leaflets are narrow and armed with small spines.  The caudex is a light color and in the wild can be up to ten feet tall.  Historically, as this species is similar to E. laurentianus, it was called also "Encephalartos laurentianus Lake George", referring to its specific habitat.  The nursery plants I'm putting on special are in 5 gallon size with 4.5 inch caudexes.  They are an ideal size for planting after acclimation.   We have other sizes as well, both larger and smaller.  Note the appearance of these plants with their long leaves with narrow leaflets.  Enthusiasts love this species because it's a good growing cycad.  Right on the coast I'd give it half day sun.  It's not quite a sun-tolerant as many of the South African species.  Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.

MACROZAMIA COMMUNIS
MEDIUM SIZED AUSTRALIAN CYCAD
WANTS SUN - COLD HARDY INTO THE UPPER TEENS
15 GALLON PLANTS CAUDEX ABOUT SIX INCHES

This cold hardy Australian cycad doesn't form a lot of trunk over the decades.  Mature it's a medium to large cycad but not with much vertical height.  Crown width can be over ten feet when mature.  So, it'll need some room to grow and plenty of sun.  Leaves are green and flat in cross-section.  Cold hardiness is probably about 18 degrees F.  The plant size on sale in 15 gallon pots.  Caudexes are about six inches.  We only have several of this size.

This is a fairly rare species of cycad from Western Australia.  It forms a trunk over the decades and has long leaves.  The leaves are keeled and green to blue-green in color.  The trunk can get quite wide in decades.  The 15g plants we have are quite nice.  This one has a caudex of 6 inches.  Other plants are a bit smaller.  This species wants full sun and is cold hardy to at least the lower 20's F.

MACROZAMIA MOOREI
LARGE GREEN AUSTRALIA CYCAD

This species is the largest of any Macrozamia and is from Queensland, Australia. Trunk height can get to twenty feet.  It has a fairly thick trunk to an 18 inch diameter or more.  Leaves are also keeled.  Leaf length can reach eight feet.  So, give it some room when planted.  A nice thing about this species is that it is fairly cold hardy for a cycad.  I've gotten reports that it's the easiest cycad to grow in the SF Bay area and can tolerate temperatures into the upper teens F. without protection.  It is a full sun species.  The plant on sale are in 15g pots with caudexes of about 6 inches.  We have other sizes, larger and smaller, available.

ZAMIA FISHCERI
AKA ZAMIA VASQUEZII
A VERY ATTRACTIVE DWARF ZAMIA

This is  small Mexican cycad with stems typically under one foot tall in size and green leaves about two to three feet long.  It usually holds about five or so leaves.  Leaflets are quite thin in texture and have soft spines on the margins.  Overall, this species has a "fern-like" appearance and most consider it a very "cute" cycad.  The names "vasquezii" replaced the more commonly known name of "fischeri" but most still refer to it by its prior name.  This is an excellent potted cycad and some have grown it inside.  In the garden, give it filtered light.  Cold tolerance is into the twenties F.  Cold weather can make it drop its leaves.  The plants on sale are in citrus pot with a 2.5 inch caudex.

MOOSEHORN FERN
PLATYCERIUM SUPERBUM
SOUGHT AFTER TYPE OF EPIPHYTIC FERN

This variety of fern is known as the "Moosehorn Fern" because of the wide, nearly solid frond it throws from the smooth shield.  Compare this to the more "anter-like" fronds of the Platycerium bifurcatum.  The fronds can be six feet wide at maturity.  They are epiphytic and in the wild grow on tree trunks and branches.  They require watering from overhead, like rain.  One arcs the hose water so it enters the top of the plant.  They want filtered light or as bit of sun and tolerate a freeze.  We are offering plants mounted on a wooden plank.  We have smaller plants for less (on sale) and larger plants as well.  See third photo.

SILVER FERN
PTERIS ARGYRAEA
UNDERSTORY UPRIGHT FERN WITH SILVER AND GREEN LEAVES

This is an easy to grow fern as long as you do two things:  Keep it moist like most ferns.  And grow it in filtered light, not full sun.  It is a clumping fern that has upright leaves (fronds) that get about three feet long.  The leaves themselves have a background green color with central silver-white coloring as shown.  It can take temperatures into the 20's F.  Our 5 gallon are not overly large presently - thus a better price.  Don't confuse this with the Silver Break Fern which we also carry.   I prefer this one.

This popular and colorful Banana gets to a mature height of 12 to 18 feet, likes full sun and is cold hardy down to about a freeze.  It is quick growing and an ornamental Banana not a fruit producing variety.  The nicest thing about this plant is its appearance.  It really shows the red.  But, it doesn't live forever and will die in when it blossoms.  This is usually in about four, perhaps five years.
