BRAZILIAN RED CLOAK
MEGASKEPASMA ERYTHROCHLAMYS
AMAZING PROMINENTLY RED LARGE SHRUB

The Brazilian Red Cloak is super rare and hard to find.  This is probably because most propagation is by cuttings only.  And, you have to have a mother plant to do this.  We obtained two mother plants about ten years ago and have established them here in Encinitas.  We began propagating several years ago.  This is considered a "bush" but can reach heights of eight feet or more.  It blooms red when the weather is more cool - November to April.  The mother plants are in blossom right now!  The terminal leaves turn red and hide the small white blossoms within (thus the "cloak" in the name).  The red colored photo is of our mother plants.  These can be mail ordered but you have to be in at least a 9A environment to grow it.  Cold tolerance is down to about a freeze.  We only have a few for sale.

CAESLPIIVIA PULCHERRIMA
PRIDE OF BARBADOS OR PEACOCK FLOWER
MEDIUM HEIGHT SEMI-DWARF COLOR
LOTS OF ORANGE & YELLOW BLOSSOMS - SUMMER TO EARLY FALL

This is the first time we've offered this colorful companion plant that is native to the West Indies and sub-tropical Americas.  Known as the Peackock Flower, it is the national flower of the Island of Barbados.  It has small oblong leaflets that droop when touched.  Flowers protrude a foot or two above the foliage and are prominently colored with orange, yellows and sometimes a red color.  Mature height can be up to six to eight feet but it is easy to prune them back to keep them smaller or form a hedge.  Of note, stems have tiny spines which don't seem to break off.  It may defoliate in winter if you're in a colder area but plants usually come back in mid-spring. This species likes full sun.  This is the first time we offered this species.   They came from a private gardener.  The garden photo is c/o Pinterest, unknown author.  Also, as far approaches, these plant are going out of blossom.

CANNA LILY
ARRIVING PRESENTLY
SUMMER BLOOMER
ASSORTED VARIETIES

Canna Lilies are a tropical or semi-tropical perennial plant.  They are not a true Lily but called a Lily.  They are probably most closely related to Gingers.  I've found the foliage is a bit less appealing in winter.  Then, in summer when it's warm, they do their thing with rapid growth of pretty foliage as shown here and a prolonged display of colorful blossoms.  They can take our coastal sun or part sun.  I have several types/varieties available.  I'm showing three varieties below.  All have stunning blossoms in summer.  The Tropicana is known for its colorful leaves.  Blossom colors on Canna vary from red to pink to apricot to yellow and more.  Be aware that a Canna purchased now in winter will not look its best until growth resumes in spring.  We restock on these in spring.

This is an interesting plant we propagate ourselves from seeds of existing plants.  They form small clusters of shiny green leaf plants that don't get over 18 inches.  The new name (Farfugium giganteum) would lead one to think that the leaves are "huge' but they are not.  Average leaf width is about 8 inches.  Flowers come in the fall are yellow, daisy-like and medium sized.  This species enjoys water and will droop over with too little water.  Then, when given water, they bounce right back.  It's a good "indicator plant" for how well you are watering the garden.  They'll take sun in many areas or part day sun.  In full sun, give them plenty of water.  These plants do sucker and are easy to propagate from divisions. This is a great "filler plant" to put in areas where you want something but don't know what to use.  We have other sizes on sale as well.

FURCRAEA MACDOUGALII
THE TREE
FURCREA
INTERESTING MEDIUM SIZED, SUN LOVING TREE
BLUE GREEN FOLIAGE – WATER CONSERVING

This species is a stunning member of the Agave family.  It is known as the tallest Agave and is native only to a small area Oaxaca, Mexico.  There it lives in hot, dry scrubland.  Overall height in the wild gets to twenty feet, although plants in cultivation often flower at a height of about ten feet.  Leaves are blue-green in color, very fleshy and stiff, and pointed upwards.  They are also thick and firm with small spines along their margins.  When old dead leaves are cleaned from the trunk, it is very cool looking.  When this species flowers, a huge upright flower up to twenty feet emerges.  Initially there are white flowers and these are followed by a large number of "bubils" that fall to the ground and are the means of propagation.  The mother plant then dies.  Cold tolerance from reports is about 22 degrees F.  It is a full sun plant.  The 15g plants on sale are ten years old and, if anything, bigger than shown here.

This is one of three types of Guava that I'm showing presently.  It does form a trunk and get some vertical height.  The hallmark of this plant is the production of large, rounded fruit that can weight one to two pounds each.  It is super sweet and can be eaten right off the tree - skin and all.  It grows in full sun.  If you freeze, the leaves will stall and may discolor or drop off the tree.  The fruit is yellow and is used toL make juice drinks.

MOOSEHORN FERN
PLATYCERIUM SUPERBUM
SOUGHT AFTER TYPE OF EPIPHYTIC FERN

This variety of fern is known as the "Moosehorn Fern" because of the wide, nearly solid frond it throws from the smooth shield.  Compare this to the more "anter-like" fronds of the Platycerium bifurcatum.  The fronds can be six feet wide at maturity.  They are epiphytic and in the wild grow on tree trunks and branches.  They require watering from overhead, like rain.  One arcs the hose water so it enters the top of the plant.  They want filtered light or as bit of sun and tolerate a freeze.  We are offering plants mounted on a wooden plank.  We have smaller plants for less (on sale) and larger plants as well.  See third photo.  Of not, we sell out of these quickly but cn usually get new ones in from a fern enthusiast and supplier to our nursery.

PANDANUS UTILUS
THE SCREW PINE
ONE OF THE FEW PANDANUS GOOD FOR THIS AREA

Pandanus utilus is called the Screw Pine but is not a pine at all.  It's actually a monocot (similar to palms) and native to Madagascar, the Mauritius Islands and some surrounding areas.  It gets it's name by the arrangement of leaves which come off the trunk in spiraling fashion, always the same direction.  Thus, the leaves spin off at different angles in a swirl.  Leaves are rather thin and have spines along the margins.  The trunk on this species is quite amazing.  It forms aerial roots (sausage like) that come to the ground for stability.  Trunks fork and form multiple heads of leaves.  Trunks can also be quite smooth, almost snakeskin-like.  It has large fruit clusters that are bigger than grenades.  But, it is a dioecious species and you need a male and female plant to set viable seeds.  Leaf color is green with a sheen of blue.  Overall height is variable, but old specimens can easily be over thirty feet tall with lots of branches.  It takes sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is probably in the mid-twenties F.  We are offering only a few 5g as shown that we have in stock.  This is an extremely rare species to find for sale.

VERY LARGE SPLIT LEAF PHILODENDRON

This is an interesting type of Philodendron for those of you who like big leafed, climbing species.  It's been available for many decades, but more recently is hard to find.  It can develop three foot leaves with a stem that is 4 to 5 inches thick.  It likes to climb and will go slowly up a trunked palm tree.  In my garden, I have several that have ten foot long trunks.  They show interesting old leaf base scars and have lots of aerial roots.  As mentioned, this is a climbing species.  If you plant them where there’s nothing to hang onto they will do fine but produce a shorter, fat trunk for support.  They take coastal full or part day sun.  Far inland areas should give it a few hours of sun or strong filtered light.  They can be grown as a houseplant.  Their cold hardiness is down to at least the mid to low 20’s F.

AN ASSORTMENT OF COLOR COMBINATIONS AND SIZES

Most people are familiar with Plumeria.  They are grown throughout the world.  The main issue is winter cold.  All want sun.  They can usually recover from freeze damage the next year.  But, significant cold kills them.  There are probably a hundred different hybrids made to show off an assortment of color combinations.  We do have available many very nice, outdoor grown and well rooted plants with pink, red, yellow, and other colors.  Photos below are of Plumeria and flowers at the nursery.  We get our plants propagated by a local private Plumria enthusiast with only the best colors and hybrids.  Availability is limited and changes quickly.

RED BANANA
ENSETE MAURELLII
LIKES SUN - GETS STRONG TED TONES TO LEAVES/STEMS

This popular and colorful Banana gets to a mature height of 12 to 18 feet, likes full sun and is cold hardy down to about a freeze.  It is quick growing and an ornamental Banana not a fruit producing variety.  The nicest thing about this plant is its appearance.  It really shows the red.  But, it doesn't live forever and will die in when it blossoms.  This is usually in about four, perhaps five years.  Second photo below is by containercrazy CT website

SYNGONIUM CHIAPENSE
CLIMBING SMALL GREEN LEAF PLANT
SIMILAR TO PHILODENDRON

Syngonium are a type of plant that is similar to Philodendron in that they climb up tree trunks, posts or fences.  They are fairly trouble free.  I've found that they like filtered light and slowly but surely just keep on growing and extending their reach.  The leaves of this species are green, sort of heart shaped, about 4 inches in length and the stems are green.  Highly recommended and first time being offered.

Sale price only one gallons with a foot or two of stem $55

SPATHODEA CAMPANULATA
THE AFRICAN TULIP TREE
RED BLOSSOM FORM

We are fortunate here in Southern California because there are quite a few striking, beautiful flowering tropical trees that we can grow.  Included in this group is the African Tulip Tree with its clusters of large blossoms.  Over 99% of the trees you'll see have the orange or red-orange blossoms.  Rarely you’ll see the yellow flower type. It blooms in summer but sometimes longer.  It wants full sun.  Cold hardiness is estimated to be in the mid-twenties F.  It wants full sun.

STAGHORN FERN - PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM
TYPE OF EPIPHYTIC FERN
GROW IN A BASKET, MOUNT IT ON WOOD OR GROW IT IN A TREE

Staghorn Ferns and the group of Platycereium come from various tropical area of both the New World and Old World.  Unlike most other ferns, this group grows epiphytically in trees - on branches and trunks.  They do not harm the tree.  This species has antler-like fronds or leaves and forms a shield near its base.  The shield is green and fairly smooth.  Very old plants become huge clusters or clumps in a tree.  Plants can be grown in a basket, on a wooden plank or in a tree.  They are not hard to grow.  You just don't let them go overly dry.  We have various sizes at times and the one shown below is a well developed cluster.

Regular price mounted medium size on wood $80 - $110
Sale price this size as shown first through third pictures $65-$85

If this one sells we can fairly quickly obtain another.

This typically single trunk tree fern is native to Southeastern Australia and Tasmania.  It is much slower growing than the Australian Tree Fern above and has a mature height typically of 8 to 10 feet.  Trunks are usually more thin than the Australian Tree Fern - estimate four to six inches.  Leaves are also shorter.  This plant likes a bit of sun or filtered light and also loves water.  Cold tolerance is 25 degrees F. or lower.

TRADESCANTIA PALLIDA
THE PURPLE HEART PLANT
GREAT GROUND COVER - PURPLE COLOR

I'm often asked about tropical ground cover plants.  Customers want something different.  I might suggest the Purple Heart plant as shown here.  It fairly quickly covers ground and can take full or part day coastal sun.  The flowers are pink.  It grows like a Wandering Jew plant.  Leaves are a purple-red color.  We're putting our 8 inch plants on sale.  You can see how they spill over the pot.  This is because they "run" and thus make an ideal ground cover with color.

THE TRAVELER PALM
RAVENALA MADAGASCARENSIS

BANANA-LIKE TREE IN ONE PLANE
IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND LATELY

Most people are fascinated by this large, banana-like plant that has wide, long and soft leaves that tower overhead.  It is native to Madagascar.  The fact the leaves of the Traveler Palm are all aligned in one plane fascinates viewers. But I must first mention that this species is not a palm at all!  Rather, it is part of the Bird of Paradise family.  It got its common name of "Traveler Palm" (aka Traveller Palm) because the leaf bases would catch and hold water for thirsty travelers.  Compared to the Giant Bird of Paradise, it's so much nicer.  It's less maintenance, is not invasive and prettier.  But, the downside is that Ravenala madagascarensis doesn't survive a freeze.  Literally, a freeze will kill it overnight.  This is the first time I’ve had any Traveler Palms available for two years.  I’ve had hundreds of calls by people looking for them and there just aren’t any of any size available.

YUCCA ROSTRATA

NEVER GETS OVERLY TALL

This is a remarkable plant because it is very cold hardy and has brilliant blue leaves in sun.  It is native to Mexico and develops a thin trunk and rarely gets over six  to eight feet tall in decades.  It wants full sun.  Cold hardiness is probably about ten degrees F.  We have a customer in the New York city area who has some unprotected outdoors - and they've wintered over for years without protection.  The garden photo is by unknown author c/o Wikipedia.
