BURRETIOKENTIA VIEILLARDII Regular price 15 gallon $250
BUTIA PARAGUENSIS
This Asian species of the Fishtail Palm is a suckering type and
tolerates coastal part sun, or in very mild areas possible full sun.
It is native to SE Asia and India. It does sucker and has
bipinnate leaves. It is
cold hardy to about 28 degrees F.
Mature height is about 25 feet if well grown.
It can also be used as a patio or interior palm.
Regular price five gallon $135
CARYOTA URENS
Caryota urens is
a tall single trunk monocarpic palm species native to Asia. It is fast
growing and can get to a height of 70 feet. It is definitely a
canopy-forming palm species. Leaves a green and leaflets are premorse
(jagged at their ends). Some people love the grandeur of these palms.
Trunks are tan, ringed and about 16 inches diameter on average. It will
get taller and more quickly get there than almost any other palm in your
garden. They want full sun and, especially if inland, plenty of water.
Because they are monocarpic (flower and then die), one needs a plant
that is near death to get seeds. This occurs rarely. We were able to
germinate seeds from such a plant. I’ve not had seedlings for six to
eight years. They are on their first or second leaf and can be mail
ordered within the U.S. easily.
Regular price one gallon and band size $65
CHAMAEDOREA ADSCENDENS
This is a solitary trunk dwarf species from Guatemala and Belize.
It was only introduced into the trade in the past two decades.
Stems are thin and a white-tan color. Leaves are blue green with
an iridescent sheen. Leaves are pinnate and sometimes simple,
especially when young. Height of this palm is usually under three
feet, but plants in the wild have been reported to be five to six feet.
It is cold hardy to about a freeze and prefers filtered light.
Planting in small colonies is very attractive. This species is
almost impossible to find. We got our seeds from a famous
botanist, so I know they are correctly produced without hybridization.
The seedlings on sale have four leaves and are two years old. They
can easily be mail ordered. They’d make a great interior or patio
plant as well.
CHAMAEDOREA
ARENBERGIANA
This
single trunk species is from Mexico and Central America. It is
pinnate like other Chamaedoreas with a trunk
diameter of an inch or a bit more. The leaves a five feet long
with wide leaflets and prominent drip tips. The trunks are dark
green and prominent trunk rings are present. Low temperatures
tolerated are about to a freeze and this species likes filtered light.
Mature height is about ten feet. Regular price 15
gallon $245 This sun tolerant single trunk palm, that is
native to Mexico, gets up to about 14 feet
in height. It has a green, ringed trunk about 1.5 inches in diameter.
The leaves are plumose or fluffy. They are quick growing
and perfect for narrow planter areas. It will take full
coastal sun. Cold hardiness is into the mid-twenties F.
It can also be used as a houseplant in a bright area. To
give a better appearance, we grow several plants in one pot.
Shown are 5g first followed by 15g sizes. Both are on
sale. Regular price 1 gallon $65 Regular
price 15g $245
CHAMAEDOREA WOODSONIANA
CHAMAEROPS HUMILIS VULCANO
DICTYOSPERMA FURFURACEUM
Among taxonomists, Dictyosperma is known as a "monotypic" genus.
This means there is only one species. Older varietal names such as
"rubrum" and "furfuraceum" are out. Now the
taxonomist say there are three varieties of Dictyosperma album -
and the prior variety called "rubrum" apparently is grouped with
the aureum present type variety.
This thin trunked suckering palm is native to Madagascar where, in the
northeastern area, it lives close to the sandy beaches. Thus the
common name. It has green curved leaves with small leaflets.
The tubular crown shaft is white and the thin trunk is ringed. It
is distinguished from the Areca Palm by it's reddish petioles and
blue-green leaflets. It typically forms a clump of four to five
individual plants. It tolerates coastal sun and is cold hardy in
the mid to upper 20's F. It is as rare species. We rarely
have it for sale. The garden photos are by TS at RPS.
Regular price 5 gallon $155
DYPSIS HETEROMORPHA DYPSIS LAFAZAMANGA
DYPSIS PLUMOSA
Regular price 15
gallon $245
DYPSIS SPECIES ORANGE CRUSH
This species of single
trunk, "non-crown shafted" pinnate palm is native to medium elevations
on Lord Howe Island. At one time is was possible to import seeds
of this desirable palm along with Hedyscepe and Lepidorrhachis.
Because of conservation laws, the island can no longer legally export
seeds or seedlings. This has created a shortage of the more rare
species from this locality. Howea belmoreana is
different from the Howea forsteriana (classic Kentia Palm) as
it has curved leaves and an umbrella-shaped crown. It also might
be a bit more cold hardy. It prefers filtered light or a little
sun inland and can take more sun right on the coast. Cold
tolerance is about 24 degrees F.
KENTIOPSIS PYRIFORMIS
This is a single trunk, crown shafted pinnate palm native to New
Caledonia. Many feel it's the prettiest species of this genus.
It gets to a height of about 40 feet or more and has a thin trunk.
Leaves are upright, green and arched. They are keeled and green in
color. The crown shaft is a copper color, covered with a white
wax. It can be grown in some sun, depending on where you live.
It's probably best to start it in bright filtered light and let it work
its way into overhead sun. Growth rate is good, comparable or
faster than K. oliviformis. Cold tolerance is down to about
a freeze. This is an extremely
difficult species to find for sale nowadays. I am offering our 5
gallon size on Special. This is followed by a habitat photo
by TS at RPS.
Regular price 5 gallon $145
PARAJUBAEA TORALLYI -
THE SOUTH AMERICAN "COCONUT PALM" POLYANDROCOCOS CAUDESCENS
This is a single trunk species from Brazil. Polyandrococos is
a monotypic genus with only one species. More recently a
taxonomist grouped it with Allagoptera. Its height is variable,
depending on conditions. However, some trees can get up to thirty
feet tall. The trunk is medium sized, about twelve inches thick,
with no crown shaft. The leaves are eight to ten feet long and
very silver underneath. It also has gorgeous clusters or orange colored
(mature) seeds that are the color of orange sherbet ice cream.
This is a very rare plant and hard to find.
Prestoea is a genus that is very closely related to another
palm genus, Euterpe. It is found in the Caribbean, Central and
South America. Essentially all Euterpe are crown shafted
palms. Many of the Prestoea are not. There are also
distinctions between the flowers of these two genera. Also, many
of the Prestoea are suckering. But, there is one that is
single trunk. This is Prestoea montana, native to
mountainous areas of Puerto Rico. The hallmarks of this species
are its wide and very shiny green leaves, its somewhat slender trunk and
its overall beautiful appearance. Plant heights can reach forty
feet or more. This species should be grown in part day sun or
filtered light. I'd estimate its cold tolerance is down to about a
freeze or a bit less. Note that this species has historically been
known as "Prestoea montana" but in more recent years has been
considered a variety of P. acuminata.
Many
folks like plants that don't have a super thick trunk and don't get too
tall. Such is the case with this species. Ravenea
glauca is
native to Madagascar, has a thin six inch trunk and gets to a height of
about 25 feet. Leaves are green and leaf stems are un-armed.
Some people consider this palm to be like
a large Pygmy Date but without the spines!
It is a full sun plant in most areas and
cold hardy to the upper teens to low 20's F. Growth
rate is pretty good. It is a very durable plant and easy to grow.
Limited availability.
Well grown, the Majesty Palm is a very attractive
and fast growing palm from Madagascar. It got a bad rap initially
because people didn't water them enough and rarely fed them. This
resulted in bleached out leaf color and anemic appearing palms.
But, given adequate water and a balanced fertilizer with mircroelements,
they are easy to grow and look great. Mature height is over 40
feet. The trunk is clean and tapers as you look up the trunk.
Leaf color is green and leaves are un-armed. Cold tolerance is
into the twenties F. Full sun along the coast is preferred.
They can be used as an interior palm.
RHAPIS MULTIFIDA
I haven't been able to offer this superior fan palm as they have not
been available for over five years. But, we do have one or two
very old plants that we were holding in stock and have decided to
sell. This is a very rare type of Lady Palm. This species is from
China and is often mistaken for Rhapis humilus. But, it is a
smaller species, getting to about 8 feet tall whereas humilus gets
about twice as tall. It performs well inside the home or office and
also is quite easy to grow outside in filtered light. The stems of multifida are
much more attractive than the common Lady Palm, Rhapis excelsa.
It also carries more leaflets per leaf than the Lady Palm and is overall
a more attractive plant. The leaflets are narrow and come to a
point like Rhapis humilus. Side by side, the majority of
our customers prefer the Rhapis multifida to the Rhapis
excelsa. Cold hardiness
is into the mid-twenties or lower, F. Outdoors, this species
prefers filtered light. One must be careful not to give Rhapis too
much fertilizer or leaf burn may occur. WE have two sizes
available that we're putting on Sale.
RHOPALOSTYLIS CHEESEMANII
Of the Shaving Brush Palm family, this is the hardest one to find.
And, many think it's the prettiest and most desirable species.
Some consider it to be a variety of R. baueri. We like to
consider it a species. Native to Raoul Island, an island well off
the eastern side of New Zealand, this species has a medium sized trunk
and reaches a height of twenty five feet. The crown shaft is
gorgeous but not as swollen as R. sapida. I have some
customers who report the crown shaft being a purple color. On
younger plants the leaf stems may shown colors of red to purple. With
age they are a brown-green. Leaves are green and arching. Trunks are
prominently ringed. It will take coastal sun or part day sun. Some
grow it in strong filtered light. Far inland it needs protection from
full sun. Growth rate is slow to medium. We’re putting n two sizes on
Sale. The last photo is

Regular price 15
gallon $245
RHOPALOSTYLIS SAPIDA Regular price band size $65
SYAGRUS KELLYANA
This single trunk Syagrus is native to Brazil and only gets to heights
of ten to twenty feet. The trunk is thin and clean over time.
Leaves are somewhat plumose and green. Fruits are fairly large and
yellow in color. Some comment that is is similar to S.
picrophylla. It is a full sun palm with an, as of yet, unknown cold
tolerance. I suspect it'll go into the twenties for sure. It
is a newly introduced species so there's little cultural information.
Note on the mature palm pictures that the leaves down go much below the
spherical circle of crown leaves. I find this very appealing.
I’m offering 5 gallon plants on special. They are hug for their
pots. This is a very rare species to find. Mature plant
photo below is by Paul Craft - PalmNut.

POTENTIAL TO GROW SOMETHING THAT CAN'T BE GROWN HERE
VERY EXCITING – MAY BEONE OF THE FEW OFFERINGS THIS CROSS IN THE COUNTRY
There is an interesting story behind the plants I'm showing you here.
About five to six years ago, we got some seeds from a botanical garden that
were labeled as Veitchia merrillii (aka Adonidia merrillii).
The seeds we got were thought to be pure Veitchia merrillii. The
seeds germinated but about half of the plants produced didn’t appear to
be pure merrillii. It
ends up that these different plants are a hybrid of a Veitchia
merrillii crossed with something else. And, they were
showing much better cold tolerance. Most likely it's with
another species of Veitchia that are more cold tolerant.
This is to our customer's benefit as this means perhaps they can grow
these and end up with a smaller palm that resembles V. merrillii.
These should tolerate full sun.
Cold hardiness is unknown but should be below a freeze.

ALLAGOPTERA ARENARIA
THE SEASHORE OR BEACH PALM
FULL SUN, COLD HARDY, DWARF
The nursery plants shown here are nice one gallon size. They are about
three years old. This species is native to Brazil and lives near the
ocean, often on sandy dunes near beaches. In general, it is very slow
growing. Mature height height is about six feet. The leaves are
plumose and fluffy. It is a single trunk species although it has the
appearance of being a suckering species. It loves sun and heat. If you
need a small palm for full sun that you can see over, this is a great
species for you. These 1g are easy to ship in their containers with
soil.

ARCHONTOPHOENIX "TERACARPA"
THE BEST KING PALM EVER!
WHAT IS IT?
This is a type of King Palm that comes from a large specimen in
Phil's
personal garden. We named it "teracarpa" - meaning "big body".
No one has been able to identify it. It has a much thicker trunk,
gets taller than the normal King Palm, is a more vigorous grower and
does not brown tip in sun. In Phil's garden it towers over regular
Kings nearby and is much greener and prettier. There's a hint of
silver on the back of the leaves and seeds are larger than normal King
Palm seeds. All who have bought it say it's one of the best palms
in their garden. It does not brown tip in the sun and is more
resistant to wind. Cold tolerant to
about 25 degrees F. by estimation.

ARENGA MICRANTHA
LARGE SUCKERING PINNATE PALM FROM INDIA
EXTREMELY COLD HARDY – GREEN LEAVES – SILVER BACKS
IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND
Shown below is an impossible to find suckering palm from northern India,
Tibet and surrounding areas. Quite remarkably, its native habitat is at
elevations of 5000 to 7500 feet. As you'd suspect, it tolerates
temperatures way below freezing, probably into the upper teens F. I
don't really know for sure as of yet. But, it's felt to be the most
cold hardy of the genus Arenga. It's not a medium sized
Arenga. It can get up to 20 feet with trunks about 8 inches
(mature) in diameter. Like other species of the genus, the trunks are
hairy and a bit shaggy. Leaves are large and silver colored on their
underside. It is a part day sun or filtered light species.
We only have a couple of 15g which are going on Sale. They
are over ten years old. Since their original seed offering, no
seeds have been available since. The garden photo is by Rich Norm

BISMARCKIA NOBILIS
BLUE FAN PALM FROM MADAGASCAR
IMPRESSIVE SPECIMEN PALM IN GARDEN
Native to hot areas of Madagascar, this is an intensely blue, medium to large tropical fan palm with large
blue
leaves. It wants full sun and loves heat. Cold tolerance to
about 20 degrees F. Well grown, it is a "show stopper".
Grown in shade, it may not hold its blue color. In the right
areas, expect an eventual height of 30 feet or more. We're
offering three sizes on sale, all great for garden planting right now. I've
shown as well a grove of good sized specimens below. All three

BLUE SINGLE TRUNK FAN PALM
LOVES SUN AND HEAT - SUPER COLD HARDY
This palm is quite similar to the
more common Brahea armata. ItIt is felt by some to be a
natural hybrid between Brahea
armata and Brahea
brandegeei. It’s
considered a “costo-palmate” palm. It loves sun, takes cold to
15 degrees and is blue in color. It gets to a height of no
more than 20 feet. Compared to the common Mexican Blue Fan
Palm (Brahea armata),
it has longer petioles and is faster growing. Another
curious difference we've discovered is the stem armor.
Rather than simple, uniform curved spines, the armor is more
like a bad set of shark's teeth. These are way to big for
standard mail order.
Sale prices this size $475
DWARF, BLUE, SUCKERING SUN PALM
VERY LIMITED SUPPLY AVAILABLE
This easy to grow Mexican fan palm hardly ever
gets over five feet tall. In the sun, it gets super blue, suckers
and doesn't have a large footprint in the garden. Surprisingly,
when young, plants are green in color. But, outdoors in the sun, I
guarantee that they'll turn blue. Leaves are small compared to
other Braheas. It
is rare and, unfortunately, very slow growing. I am showing here
our 5 gallon plants which are about 5-6 years old. They are quite
old for their containers. This species will take sun in all areas
and does not like shade. It does well in desert areas. Cold
tolerance is about 17 to 18 degrees. Note: When sold out,
it'll be a long time before we offer them again. We only have a
few 2g left. From the photo you can tell it's an older plant as
it's crawling on the survace. We only have a few left.

BRAHEA DULCIS
MEDIUM SIZED FAN PALM FROM MEXICO
VARIABLE IN HEIGHT AND CHARACTER
This good looking fan palm comes from southern Mexico as well as various
countries in Central America. There is variability in this species:
Some plants are green, others blue. Some specimens get to twenty feet,
others remain shorter. Over time, leaf bases fall away to give a smooth
trunk. This species likes part sun or full sun along the coast and is
cold hardy to about 20 degrees F. Photo by Angello Porcelles.

THE FRANCESHI PALM
MEDIUM SIZE MATURE
You don't see this species offered that often.
It is native to the Sonora and Sinaloa areas of Mexico. It
has green costo-palmate leaves that are divided. Trunk diameter is
a pleasant 12 inches with a rough surface. Mature height is ten to
twenty feet. Regarding culture, it is not quite as cold hardy as
other Brahea species like armata, clara and decumbens. I'd suspect it
may go down to the lower 20’s or perhaps upper teens F. It does
best in full sun. We just got in a limited number of nice 5g
plants which we’re putting on special. They are easy to ship.
Sale price this size $110
BRAHEA MOOREI
THE DWARF ROCK PALM
SUPER RARE - SOUGHT AFTER MEXICAN FAN PALM
Shown below are 3-4 year old juvenile plants of the super rare and hard
to find Brahea moorei. The seeds for these plants came from a
fruiting tree in San Diego County. They were very slow to germinate.
This is is a very small, dwarf species with overall height of
four to six feet. Leaves are near fully circular with deeply divided
segments. The underside of the leaves are brilliantly white and often
you'll see a white color on the dorsal segment margins. Culturally, you
can grow this in strong filtered light, part day sun or possibly full
sun along the coast. Cold hardiness is into the low 20's F. It is very
slow growing. The garden photo is c/o PACSOA.

BRAHEA NITIDA
FLAT GREEN LEAF
MEDIUM SIZE MATURE
This interesting fan palm is native to
Mexico down to Guatemala. It attains a height of thirty feet with a
stout trunk of one foot in diameter. The most attractive thing about this
palm are its circular leaves, with only partial division of the
segments. It takes filtered light to full sun on the coast. Cold
hardiness is into the mid to low twenties F. The leaves are a shiny
green and the petioles are essentially un-armed.

BLUE FAN PALM FROM MEXICO
THINNER TRUNK THAN BRAHEA
ARMATA
Shown here is a 15 gallon plant of a Brahea species
from Mexico that is presently known as "Brahea species
Super Silver". Undoubtedly someone will describe it in the
near future and attach a scientific name. Seeds have been
available only twice. It is a blue plant but doesn't show the blue
until older. It wants full hot sun and would be perfect for the
desert. I suspect the cold tolerance is similar to Brahea
armata, about
15 degrees F. But, compared to the later, this species trunk is
much thinner and it is faster growing. But, the blue color is just
as intense. Shown here is the 15g size. Limited numbers.

medium trunk, a white crown shaft and gets to about 25 feet tall.
Leaves are pinnate, slightly arched and sometimes red emergent.
It's very beautiful and does great in Southern California. Most
grow it in part day sun. Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F.
The plants on sale are very old, nicely sized 15 gallon.

THE TIGER PALM - STRIPED CROWN SHAFT
ANOTHER SPECIES OF THIS GREAT GENUS
This species of Burretiokentia comes
from the highest elevation of the three species of this genus from New
Caledonia. It grows at altitudes of almost 4000 feet. It has
a thin trunk of about six inches and can get to sixty feet tall.
It has a prominently bulging crown shaft that is known for it's
diagonally dark markings. Thus, the name "Tiger Palm". The
crown shaft is reddish-brown in color and has prominent striations as
shown below. Younger trunks are green with rings unless exposed to
sun.
The crown of this species is full and
round with upright and arching leaves. As with all New Caledonian
species, ample water is crucial. The size on special are
in 15 gallon pots.

NICE BLUE LEAVES - FULL SUN - VERY COLD HARDY
This is a unique variety of Butia capitata that has a nice blue
color. Otherwise, it's quite similar to the regular green Pindo
Palm. This palm loves full hot sun and can take down to 15 degrees F.
Growth rate is medium. Presently we only have 25 gallon sized
plants that are not the "bluest" we've had but still showing blue color
and are very large plants. Almost everyone that doesn't get severe
cold can grow this palm. Garden photo by Paul Craft.

COLD HARDY SHORTER PINNATE PALM
RARELY AVAILABLE FOR SALE
This single trunk pinnate palm is from Brazil and Paraguay. I
think the most notable thing is that it doesn't overly tall.
Almost always, this species is under ten feet overall. Rarely it
is taller. So, it might be perfect when you need a smaller tree.
It is super cold hardy and likes full sun. Cold hardiness should
be similar to the Pindo Palm, about 15 degrees F. We have five
gallon size available in limited numbers.
We haven’t offered this size of plants for about ten
years. These would be simple to mail order. The tall habitat
photo by TS at RPS shows a totally mature specimen.
The smaller plant was taken by
me at a garden and supposedly was ten years old.

BUTIA X SYAGRUS, THE MULE PALM
HUGE 25 GALLON AVAILABLE
VERY COLD TOLERANT, RARE - APPEARANCE SIMILAR TO COCONUT
A hybrid palm that is super attractive, gets to a height of about 25
feet and is cold hardy to about 16 degrees. It comes from Butia
flowers that have been pollinated with Queen Palm pollen (by hand).
Thus, it's a smaller alternative
to the Queen Palm. Does well in full sun, even in the desert.
Very rare and hard to find. If you live in a colder area, this
palm takes the weather much better than a Queen Palm and is a lot
prettier. Many say it resembles to Coconut Palm.

CARYOTA GIGAS
MOUNTAIN GIANT FISHTAIL - GIANT BLACK FISHTAIL
AKA CARYOTA OBTUSA
This is one of the most popular Fishtail Palms because of it's beautiful
full leaves. It has leaf lengths up to 14 feet with similar widths
and definitely produces shade. It is quick growing and has a thick
trunk, especially at the base. So, it needs plenty of room.
It wants full sun and is cold hardy to the low 20's F. Like all
Fishtail Palms, it is monocarpic - and dies when it flowers and finishes
its seeding process. This palm is rather hard to find with size
nowadays. A side note is that one taxonomist feels it should be
called "Caryota obtusa", a species from India.

This fairly newly named species is native to the
Chiapas area of Mexico. It is single trunk and, for a
Chamaedorea, has a rather thick two inch trunk. Leaves are
green and leathery. Leaflets are wide and leaves arch.
Mature height is 8 to 10 feet. It looks nicely planted in a small
colony of two or three plants. It'll tolerate coastal sun or part
sun. Cold tolerance is 25 to 27 degrees F. Interestingly, it
was named after a palm enthusiast here in Southern CA. Below, the

CHAMAEDOREA FRONDOSA
SIMPLE LEAF AND DWARF UNDERSTORY PALM
GREEN LEAVES - ABOUT TWO FEET TALL MATURE
UNBELIEVABLY RARE
This is another super rare and impossible to find understory single
trunk palm with simple bifid green leaves and a think trunk. It
was just discoved in 1995 and is from Honduras. Leaves are about
12 to 16 inches long and, from immature size, elongate a bit with age.
The seeds from this species came from a well known botanist and are
pure. It wants to be in shade or filtered light with very dappled
sunlight at most. It is cold hardy into the upper twenties F.
The size on sale are bands. We may have a few 1 gallon as well.
But, it's near impossible to find. If you like simple leaf palms,

above, it was named after a Southern California palm enthusiast.
It has green leaves, one inch thick stems, leaves that are about 4 to 5
feet long and a mature height of 12 to 14 feet. Leaves are
entirely green as are the ringed trunks. It's a good growing palm
that wants filtered light. Cold hardiness is about 25 degrees F.

CHAMAEDOEA SCHIPPII
UNBELIEVABLE RARE SUCKERING SHADE PALM
FIRST TIME AVAILABLE IN 30 YEARS
Taxonomically, this species of Chamaedorea is an accepted
species. Unfortunately, this species disappeared from the market about
30 years ago. This is a suckering green
leaf understory species that gets a mature height of twelve to fourteen
feet and have an appearance similar to C. costaricana. But,
the leaves are longer and the trunks are thicker. Trunks remain
vertical and don't usually lean. This species has historically been
used to make some of the more interesting Chamaedorea hybrids
including the famous "Irving Cantor" cross. They were chosen for
hybridization because of their strong vertical trunks. Cold tolerance
is into the twenties F. We are offering a limited number of small
seedlings for sale. This is the first time we've had them in 25
years! The garden photo is of a plant at my personal garden.
There's few gardens worldwide that have mature specimens of this
species. Note on the 15 gallon photo how tall the stem is before

below the ceilings of most homes. It is a suckering species with
thin canes and leaves that are about three feet long with green
leaflets. Outdoors, it wants filtered light and is cold hard into
the mid, perhaps lower 20's F. But, I've seen coastal
residents growing it in near full sun - and they don't look bad.

COCCOTHRINAX BARBADENSIS
MEDIUM SIZED, NARROW TRUNK
VERY "CUTE PALM" WITH GREEN OR SILVER GREEN LEAVES
We at the nursery are very proud that we offer a good selection of these
interesting New World fan palms. Coccothrinax are native to the
Caribbean region. This species, C. baradensis, gets to heights
of about 30 feet in many decades. Leaf color is green to silver-green
and trunks are typically six inches thick or a bit more. This species
loves full hot sun and is cold tolerant into the mid-twenties F. Many
are growing it with good success. In pots, all Coccothrinax are
painfully slow. Our plants are grown from seed which we germinate.
After a 6 month wait, one gets one small green strap leaf. It takes 2
to 3 more years to get a fan-type leaf. Thus, it's taken us about eight
years to produce the 5g plants you see here. In the ground they are
much faster.

ROMANZOFFIANA
FANTASTIC RARE HYBRID PALM - MEDIUM

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND
This hybrid palm was created by an elderly
enthusiast in Thailand from Queen Palm pollen placed on receptive
flowers of S. schizophylla. The hybrid produced is
beautiful and much prettier than either parent. It really doesn't
resemble either parent and is totally different than the Queen Palm.
It takes full sun, can be grown in some desert areas and only gets to a
height of 20 to 25 feet. It is lush and green and cold hardy to
the lower 20's. It is near impossible to find and will NOT
be available in the future. These are always expensive. As
we have very few of these, if they sell out we may have to make them

A BEAUTIFUL DYPSIS WITH NO SPECIES NAME
MANY TIMES SPORTS AN ORANGE CROWN SHAFT
MEDIUM MATURE HEIGHT - EXOTIC AND SOUGHT AFTER
This is another exotic species that is near impossible to find.
It is native to Madagascar, gets to a mature height of about 20
feet, has an 8 inch thick trunk and, most appealing, is the
smooth orange colored crown shaft. (see last photo). We
have available some 2 gallon plants. It is recommended that you
grow this one for a year or two before planting. At one
point, orange crush was felt to be Dypsis pululifera. But,
that was proven incorrect by taxonomists. It presently has
not species name. I'd start it in strong filtered light or
slowly acclimate it to some sun. Cold tolerance is
probably not much below a freeze. The last photo was taken by TS
at RPS.

EUTERPE EDULIS
A FORM OF THE "ACAI" BERRY PALM
This palm species makes seeds which are the source of the "Acai berry
juice". This species makes large numbers of dark purple seeds, so it's
no surprise that it is loaded with antioxidant properties and someone
would market it. Euterpe
edulis is
a fast growing, thin trunked, pinnate palm with a long colorful crown
shaft. Crown shaft color varies from green to a mahogany brown. This
species is native to Brazil and northern Argentina. It is cold hardy
into the mid-twenties F. It prefers to start as a younger plant in
strong filtered light and work its way into the sun

This popular single trunk palm is tropical appearing, has green leaves
and gets to a height of thirty feet in thirty years. Leaves and
leaflets tend to droop. It also makes a great patio or interior

it wants filtered light or part day sun. Of note, it is often
planted with several in a pot. For this reason, people think it
suckers, but it does not. We have an assortment of sizes on sale

LIVISTONA SARIBUS
TROPICAL FAN PALM
FULL CIRCLE OF LEAFLETS, MEDIUM TO TALL AND BLUE

This medium to tall fan palm is native
to southeast Asia. It can get to heights of thirty-five feet or more.
It is an interesting palm that is easy to grow and has a very ornamental
leaf with deep divisions of the segments. Its segment almost make a
complete circle. Leaf color is green. The spines on the petioles tend
to be dark in color and dramatic, usually the thing most people remember
most about this species. Another interesting thing is that the seed

PRESENTLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND AVAILABLE
All of the genus Parajubaea are native to South America and mostly in

species is single trunk (like all species) and gets to a height of about
50 feet. There are various varieties of this species which I won't
deal with here. It is a full sun palm, even in inland areas.
It
has a husky trunk averaging 18 inches. Seeds are quite large and
somewhat difficult to germinate. They are fast growing in the

PRITCHARDIA HILLEBRANDII -
A HAWAIIAN LOULU FAN PALM
MEDIUM SIZED MATURE - NICE SEMI-FLAT GREEN LEAVES
WHITE TOMENTUM ON LEAF STEMS AND INNER CROWN
If you like fan palms, then you have to try some Pritchardia palms.
There are about 25 species of Pritchardia.
All the best ones come from the Hawaiian Islands. The species from the
South Pacific are to be avoided as they don't do well here. This
species is from Hawaii and reaches a medium height of 25 feet. Leaves
are green. They have white tomentum (hairs) on the leaf stem and
trunk. I’d estimate the trunk diameter at about eight inches by my
experience. It becomes clean as old leaf bases fall off. Growth rate
is medium. This is a very attractive palm. I have one in my garden
that gets partial sun and is at least 20 feet tall. Cold tolerance is
into the mid-twenties F. Mail order easy.

MEDIUM SIZE, TAKES COASTAL SUN
This species is native
to Hawaii, and is commonly considered one of the prettiest types we can

grow, this is one of the smaller species. Trunks are usually under 8
inches thick, leaves are not large and mature height is almost always
under 20 feet. For its stature it has large leaves, which are flat
and often covered with a fine, white tomentum on the underside. It takes full sun along the coast.

AN ASSORTMENT OF SPECIES TO CHOOSE FROM
OLD AND HUGE MONSTER 15 GALLON
Pritchardia are a single trunk tropical fan palm.
They are native to Hawaii and some Pacific Islands. We only grow
the Hawaiian varieties as they are more cold hardy. We have about ten
species, all from Hawaii. They are huge
plants in 15g pots. Some have been moved into boxes. All our
15g size are very large for their containers, many way overhead in their
pots. Below are example species.
It is representative and, as you can see, no other nursery offers
Pritchardias this big in 15g pots. Mature heights and appearances depend on species chosen, but expect a medium
height and a cold tolerance of about 25 degrees. Tolerate coastal
sun and have been outdoor grown. The 15 gallon we're offering are
about 15 years old and begging to get into the garden or a larger pot.
The 25g below are the same batch that were merely repotted into 25
gallon containers. On the 15 gallons, we have about eight species

WORLD'S MOST COLD HARDY PALM SPECIES!
This dwarf fan palm is known for its super cold hardiness - down

Mature height is about six to seven feet. It tolerates

THE
SHAVING BRUSH PALM OR FEATHER DUSTER PALM
A SUPERIOR PALM WITH BULGING CROWN SHAFT
Plain and simply put, this is a superior and great palm for Southern
California. It is fairly cold hardy and the only thing you have to
decide is how much sun to give it. Up to about eight miles from
the ocean, it tolerates full sun. Further inland it needs part day
sun. Far inland requires filtered light. Cold tolerance is
into the low 20's F. This species is an easy grow up in the SF Bay
area. This species is most known for it's large, bulging crown
shaft and upright leaves. The crown of leaves is "V-shaped" as
shown on large specimens below. Maximum height is about 30 feet.
Growth rate is slow, especially when young. I've found that I
can't get a vertically trunked plant in a 24 inch box no matter how long
I grow it. To get trunk, this species really has to be in the
ground. Native habitat is New Zealand.
The only size we have presently are band sized seedling. But, do
check out our Rhopalostyllis sapida hybrids further below.
.

RHOPALOSTYLIS SAPIDA HYBRIDS
SHAVING BRUSH OR FEATHER DUSTER PALM
MEDIUM SIZE, SWOLLEN CROWN SHAFT
These were plants we purchased into our nursery as "Rhopalostylis
sapida". But, on closer inspection they keyed out to be a hybrid.
This was apparent with their curved leaves and rusty-brown leaf stems.
They should follow the cultural advice above under "sapida" but will
look a bit different. I think they'll still take full coastal sun.
Inland areas should provide part day sun. We only have 15
gallon size and maybe a few 20 gallon. BTW, I don't have any
photos of the mature hybrid. But, the grower we ot them from had
both sapida and baueri intermingled and he collected
his own seeds.

ROYSTONEA BORINQUENA
PERHAPS A MORE COLD HARDY ROYAL PALM
DIFFICULT TO FIND – BUT SEEDLINGS NOW AVAILABLE
During the winter of 2007 when we had a severe cold spell, I
came to find that this species or Royal Palm seemed to possess more cold
hardiness than Roystonea regia and others that are more commonly seen. Our area got down to
about 25 degrees F. An enthusiast about a mile from the nursery
said his R. regias were totally burned but the Roystonea
borninquena went untouched. Because of this I pursued seeds
and grew more. We've sold a lot of this beautiful palm since then
and have gotten similar reports. This species is native to Puerto Rico,
Hispaniola and a few other islands. You'll note the absence of the
super swollen base often seen with other species. It likes full
sun, enjoys ample water and can get to heights over forty feet.
More recently, availability has been less plentiful, but we plan to
carry them as much as we can. Shown here are mature specimens of
this species. In recent times we've had no seeds available until
recently and presently can offer band sized seedlings

25 feet in Southern Ca. Cold tolerance is into the low 20's F.
It grows at a medium rate and can get brown tipping to the leaves if too
close to the beach. We've sold out of our larger plants and are
starting again. We're putting one gallon 2 to 3 year old juveniles
on sale.
