Over Thirty Mature Specimens For Sale

Description of This Collection

Via a long term friend of our nursery, we were recently notified of the opportunity to purchase a very unique collection of privately owned yet commercially used Lepidozamia peroffskyana. The cycads shown here were planted in a very large circular planting bed in front of a concert hall in Orange County, CA. They were planted about ten to eleven years ago although information is not available about their size at the time of planting. Grown in part to full sun and an estimated five to seven miles from the Pacific Ocean, the plants flourished and grew nicely. In the past three to five years, plants began coning and it was apparent that there were many male and female coning plants dispersed through the collection. Without human assistance, the collection began to produce viable seeds spontaneously that produced a good number of seedlings. I've known of this collection for years and had been following its progress.

Because of plans to redesign an area between two performing arts buildings, it was decided that the cycads needed to find new homes. Plans were in the works for an outdoor performing area directly over the planting bed for these cycads. Also, groundbreaking was to begin several days after we dug these plants. So, on a rainy January 5th, 2017, three members of our staff carefully removed one plant at time by hand. It was very hard work and took them a full, long day to remove all the plants. They are quite experienced at cycad removal and, with this species, have never lost a single plant. Please see photos below of the removal of these specimens. The plants were then transported to our nursery where plants were promptly put in 25 to 45 gallon containers with fresh cycad soil. Even the smallest of these plants was "huge" by nursery standards. Average weights for these specimens was over one hundred pounds. As I write this announcement five days after digging, all plants are safely inside our nursery and all are for sale.

Of the many cycad collections that we've obtained, we have never gotten in a large collection of just one species. The reason we decided to obtain it was because plants of this species and size are never available on the nursery market.

Native to Queensland and northern New South Whales, Australia. In habitat, plants have been known to reach heights of over thirty feet with trunks up to two feet wide. But, realize that such trees can be centuries old. It holds a crown of several dozen glossy green leaves. The petioles and leaflets are totally spine free. They are soft to the touch. Leaf length is typically six to nine feet and have a gentle downward arch. New leaves emerge vertically. Trunks typically have old leaf bases attached. Cones are very large. Male cones are cylindrical, long and upright. Overall appearance of this cycad is lush and tropical. Because of the long leaves, it does need adequate room in the garden to grow. It can be grown in full sun near the ocean but does quite well in part day sun or strong filtered light. Growth rate is slow. From germination, it take us eight to ten years to grow a nice, large 15 gallon plant. The specimens shown below would be considered "massive" nursery plants.
