AECHMEAN BLANCHETIANNA
SPECIMEN BROMELIAD FOR SUN

SOME WILL TURN SOMEWHAT ORANGE OR RED OVER TIME
 RARELY SEEN SPECIMEN SIZE

This sought-after Bromeliad is known for its large size and ability to tolerate full coastal sun.  Plants get up to four feet tall with yellow branched flowers that tower over the foliage.  (see photo).  These plants are in 7 or 15 gallon pots, suckering already and ready for acclimation to your garden.  They are huge and rarely seen available in this size.  In sun, these will get red in color.  Some are already very red.  There are yellow and orange forms.  The ones offering are supposed to pick up yellow and red over time.  These provide low profile color for sunny locations.  We have only limited numbers of these rare bromeliads and some are clustering.  Very limited supply currently.  We did get in several dozen in the past week or two.  Note, the prominently red plants are the first to sell out.  First shown is a 15 gallon followed by two photos of 5g size.

AEONIUM ARBOREUM
BLACK ROSE SUCCULENT

DWARF PLANT THAT TAKES SUN AND IS WATER CONSERVING

This species of succulent never gets very tall.  A four foot plant would be its maximum.  We carry the black form as shown here but also have green and variegated varieties.  The black form gives the common name.  In sun, this one gets really black leaves with newer leaves being red-black.  Blossoms are outrageous and tower above the plant with a huge display of yellow.  Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F.  It'll take full sun.  The last photo is a plant in a garden, black form.

ACANTHUS MULLIS
BEAR'S BREECHES PLANT
ABOUT FIVE FEET TALL, UPRIGHT BLOSSOMS
HARD TO FIND NOWADAYS

This herbaceous perennial is from southern Europe and northern Africa.  It is fairly easy to grow and prefers sun.  It has big, wavy green leaves.  It is somewhat reminiscent of the Snowflake Aralia which I've shown at this Blog.  Mature plant height is about three to four feet.  The blossoms are spectacular as shown -  up to 30 inches long.   They go vertically above the foliage and are lavender colored.  Plants in shade will not blossom.  A hard freeze can damage the leaves but plants usually come out of it.  This is a suckering plant and nowadays difficult to find.  The garden photo is c/o weedbusters website NZ.

AECHMEA S
PECIES
CLUSTER OF MANY PLANTS - AGE OF CLUMPT 8 YEARS
ORANGE AND YELLOW BLOSSOMS

This Bromeliad has green leaves and upright orange and yellow blossoms that are about ten inches long on a long stalk.  They reliably sucker every year and have mostly been grown in full sun.  Along the cost I'd recommend full sun and at least some sun far inlant.  They want to be wateredfrom above - i.e., their cups must be filled with water,  Drip irrigation for all Bromeliads, unless you have over the plant sprayers, will not keep them alive.  Mature height of the cluster is 3 to 4 feet.  They have survived freezes at our location.

AGAVE ATTENUATA
A "DOCTOR SEUSS" PLANT
BLUE-GREEN FOLIAGE
SUPER OLD SPECIMEN PLANTS

We have a limited selection of over ten year old plants with several feet of trunk.  They are in 15 and 20g pots.  The top of the leaves are head height.  The different thing about these plants is their age and the presence of good sized trunks.  They take sun or part sun.  Leaves are blue to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the twenties F.  The key to producing a tall plant like this is to remove the basal suckers.  If you like these and want one, act soon as we only have a few of these older plants.

FAST GROWING, CAN GET TALLER
TOLERATES COASTASL SUN

The Australian Tree Fern in native to several areas on the eastern side of Australia.  It is a faster growing tree fern that can get to a height of over forty feet.  The two photos from my garden in San Diego show potential height.  I have several with twenty-five feet of trunk.  I'm about 8 miles from the ocean and they take my sun fairly well.  Trunks can get up to twelve inches thick although most are more thin.  This species is a bigger alternative to the Tasmanian Tree Fern and has a thicker trunk and longer leaves.  This species tolerates coastal sun or part day sun.  It is cold hardy into the upper twenties or lower.  The garden photo is by PlantLust Website.

BANANA
EDIBLE BANANA THAT MANY OF YOU CAN GROW!

MUSA GRAN NAIN

VARIETY THAT CHIQUITA UTILIZES FOR MARKET FRUIT

This banana cultivar is popular worldwide and is the variety of choice for Chiquita Banana Company.  It is a cultivar of Musa acuminata.  It produces a huge amount of bananas if well grown.  It is common for one plant to produce over 40 pounds of fruit.  The fruit is medium sized, firm and sweet.  Plants get to about 9 feet height, sucker when a fruit stem has finished and require half sun or full sun if possible.  They benefit from large amounts of compost or soil amendments and do require fertilization to make good fruit.  Leaves are typically solid green.  They are a quick growing species.  They do best in frost free areas but can recover from a freeze.  Of note, remove the fruit when it's still a bit green and wait for it to ripen off the tree.  We are offering 15g plants on Special.  They are nicely sized and most are overhead in their pots.  The photo of the fruit is by A-S.

BRAZILIAN RED CLOAK
MEGASKEPASMA ERYTHROCHLAMYS
AMAZING PROMINENTLY RED LARGE SHRUB

The Brazilian Red Cloak is super rare and hard to find.  This is probably because most propagation is by cuttings only.  And, you have to have a mother plant to do this.  We obtained two mother plants about ten years ago and have established them here in Encinitas.  We began propagating about a year ago.  This is considered a "bush" but can reach heights of eight feet or more.  It blooms red when the weather is more cool - November to April.  The mother plants are in blossom right now!  The terminal leaves turn red and hide the small white blossoms within (thus the "cloak" in the name).  The red colored photo is of our mother plants.  These can be mail ordered but you have to be in at least a 9A environment to grow it.  Cold tolerance is down to about a freeze.  We only have a few for sale.

CANNA LILY
LOOK GREAT IN SUMMER, BAD IN WINTER

BUT COME BACK EVERY SPRING - SUMMER BLOOMER
ASSORTED VARIETIES

Canna Lilies are a tropical or semi-tropical perennial plant.  They are not a true Lily but called a Lily.  They are probably most closely related to Gingers.  I've found the foliage is a bit less appealing in winter.  Then, in summer when it's warm, they do their thing with rapid growth of pretty foliage as shown here and a prolonged display of colorful blossoms.  They can take our coastal sun or part sun.  I have several types/varieties available.  I'm showing three varieties below.  All have stunning blossoms in summer.  The Tropicana is known for its colorful leaves.  Blossom colors on Canna vary from red to pink to apricot to yellow and more.  Be aware that a Canna purchased now in winter will not look its best until growth resumes in spring.  We restock on these in spring.

CRINUM AMABILE - PURPLE LEAF
LARGE CRINUM TYPE LILY - AKA "QUEEN EMMA LILY"
OVERHEAD PURPLE-GREEN LEAVES
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND

This Lily is native to all sorts of locations throughout the world including southern Asia, Australia, and Africa.  It is known for it's spiraling display of long, heavy substance leaves that are upright and four to six feet long.  Their color is green and dark purple.  Flowers are white with purple centers and markings.  It grows like other Lilies by making offset tubers that make new plants.   Expect a mature height of six to seven feet, definitely overhead.  As mentioned, they clump and form a great display of foliage.  They will not "run" or take over an area.  In recent times these have been near impossible to find.  But, we have a limited number of smaller 15 gallon that we’re putting on sale.  We only have a handful of them and they'll be gone soon.  I’m also showing a garden specimen and photos of the blossoms below.

At our nursery, we really like all the Crinum Lilies.  The species shown here is a smaller type with a foliage height of about 18 inches.  Leaves are green and soft.  These plants do freely sucker.  They tolerate some sun and perhaps full sun right on the coast.  Blossoms are several inches wide and bright pink.  These plants will produce tons of flowers when they start blossoming.

DASYLIRION LONGISSIMUM
THE MEXICAN GRASS PLANT
MEDIUM SIZED UNUSUAL SUN PLANT

DROUGHT TOLERANT – LOVES FULL SUN

This interesting drought tolerant plant is native to Mexico and extremely drought tolerant.  In gardens, I’ve seen a few older plants with a few feet of trunk.  But, this species can actually get a trunk that is six or eight feet tall in fifty or a hundred years.  And, trunks can split into multiple heads. It loves hot sun.  The crown of needle like leaves is about eight feet across.  Each leaf is about the size of a knitting needle and four to six feet long.  They come to a point but are not very dangerous except perhaps to one’s eye.  The plant looks like a “Pom Pom on a Trunk”.  Leaf color is blue to blue green.  Cold tolerance is into the teens F.  They like hot sun.  Note that often we have 15 gallon available but currently only have 5 gallon plants - so that's what I'm showing below.

DRACENA DRACO
THE DRAGON TREE
TREE FORMING SUCCULENT

This species of Dracena actually makes a rather large tree.  It has thick silver leaves.  It is native to the Canary Islands.  It has the peculiar habit that, after a lengthy time, any given branch stops growing and then bifurcates or trifurcates, giving a very branched pattern. The trunk can get quite thick.  It has fragrant white blossoms.  Eventually it forms a medium sized tree.  It likes full sun and is cold hardy only into the mid-twenties F.  This tree wants full sun and does get rather large.

ENSETE VENTICOSUM "MAURELII"
THE RED BANANA

LARGE SINGLE TRUNK RED TROPICAL PLANT

Shown are different sizes of the popuular Red Banana, Ensete ventricosum mauerlii.  This is a quick growing tropical plant that can get to ten to fifteen feet tall and grows in full coastal sun.  Leaves are green with prominent red to both the dorsal and ventral sides.  Trunks are at least 18 inches thick and leaves are fleshy and soft - typical of bananas and Ensete.  It does not be edible fruit.  Cold hardiness is down to about a freeze.  Colder weather damages the leaves in winter.  This is a fast growing plant but typically only lives for about 7 years before flowering and dying.  The garden photo is by Linda Cochran.

The family of Epidendron Orchids are loaded with species/varieties of lots of different colors.  These include pink, purple, orange, red, white and yellow.  But, one of the most vibrant is the pink-purple as shown here.  It is also an easy variety to grow.  We're putting blossoming one gallon purple-pink on sale.  These plants will have tons of reed-like stems, most of which will blossom this summer.  Leaves are thick and small and plants can be divided in the future to easily add to other areas of the garden.  They'll take coastal full sun or strong filtered light.  Some sun is needed for flowering.  You can plant these right in the soil.  They are cold tolerant into the mid-twenties F.  BTW, this color is difficult to find.  You’ll love them in your garden or in a pot.  Limited supply.

ARFUGIUM JAPONICUM SHISHI BATON

DWARF RUFFLED TYPE OF LIGULARIA
12 TO 18 IN INCHES TALL - RUFFLED LEAVES

This hybrid Ligularia has small, super ruffled leaves.  We've offered ruffled Ligularia before, but this is the first time we've had this hybrid.  It doesn't get that tall, under two feet for sure.  It will take partial sun along the coast or strong filtered light.  It enjoys adequate water and should be quite easy to grow.  We've sold a lot of regular Ligularia over the years and almost everyone is having good luck with them.  This hybrid should perform about the same.  I have no garden photos to show you.

THE LEOPARD PLANT
LILY-LIKE, FLAT GREEN LEAVES
YELLOW BLOSSOMS IN FALL
TAKES SUN - LIKES WATER

This is an interesting plant we propagate ourselves from seeds of existing plants.  They form small clusters of shiny green leaf plants that don't get over 18 inches.  The new name (Farfugium giganteum) would lead one to think that the leaves are "huge' but they are not.  Average leaf width is about 8 inches.  Flowers come in the fall are yellow, daisy-like and medium sized.  This species enjoys water and will droop over with too little water.  Then, when given water, they bounce right back.  It's a good "indicator plant" for how well you are watering the garden.  They'll take sun in many areas or part day sun.  In full sun, give them plenty of water.  These plants do sucker and are easy to propagate from divisions. This is a great "filler plant" to put in areas where you want something but don't know what to use.  We have other sizes on sale as well.

FATSIA JAPONICA
THE JAPANESE ARALIA
MEDIUM SIZED TROPICAL BUSH
NICELY SIZED LEAVES WITH WIDE SEGMENTS

This medium sized lush tropical tree (some would call it a "bush") is native to Southern Japan and Korea.  It has prominently green leaves which, mature, are about 12 to 18 inches across.  It is divided into wide segments in a pinwheel pattern.  Each leaf has around eight segments.  The leaves are somewhat soft and without pointed or sharp ends.  It is an evergreen.  This spcies does sucker (clumps) and reaches a mature height of usually around 8 to 15 feet.  It prefers filtered light or a bit of sun only.  It is not really a plant for full sun - especially if you are far inland.  It does tolerate a freeze.  Flowering occurs in  fall with a cluster of white small flowers that later go one to produce fruit (seeds).  The garden photo below is c/o Wikipedia.  The 5 gallon on Sale are about 3 feet or more tall and some are suckering.

FICUS UMBELLATA
INTERIOR / EXTERIOR PLANT WITH LARGE ROUND LEAVES
DWARF MATURE SIZE - STRIKING APPEARANCE

NEWLY AVAILABLE TREE FOR ENTHUSIASTS

Until about 6 months ago, I had never heard of this species.  There's essentially no scientific articles on it on the Internet.  I've read that it is native to South Africa.  It's mentioned as a smaller replacement for the popular Fiddle Leaf Fig.  It differs from the latter in that it's leaves are very soft and pliable.  It is also much smaller tree mature.  The Fiddle Leaf Fig in my yard is over 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide with a thick trunk.  This new species is supposed to be a real dwarf, not getting over 4 to 6 feet tall.   Leaves are a foot wide, prominently veined and round.  Inside, it's said to want very bright light - next to a bright window.  Cold hardiness is unknown.  We'll know more by next spring after we winter them over at our nursery.  I have no data growing it outdoors.  We're offering some nicely sized 15 gallon that are 7 to 8 feet tall in their pots.  I only have a couple.  They are apparently near mature height.  BTW, this is only the second time we've offered this tree for sale.  We know it does well as an interior plant but data on growing outside is limited.  We only have one or two available.  Sorry, but no photos of mature trees are available

A RARE AND STUNNING BLUE FUCREA
MEDIUM HEIGHT MATURE
THIN BLUE STRAP-LIKE SOFT LEAVES

This extremely rare and difficult to find variety of Fucrea is native to southwest Guatemala and southern Mexico on the Pacific side.  Plants have thin trunks with a mature heights of six to nine feet with beautiful heads of super blue strap-like blue leaves.  The leaves are a rosette and this crown is six feet or more wide.  Trunks have been known to fork when mature.  Unlike other Fucrea that produce bubils, this species sets seeds.  This is a full sun species and is cold hardy (by estimate) into the mid to upper 20's F.  Mail order would be simple. FURCRAEA MACDOUGALII
THE TREE
FURCREA
INTERESTING MEDIUM SIZED, SUN LOVING TREE
BLUE GREEN FOLIAGE – WATER CONSERVING

This species is a stunning member of the Agave family.  It is known as the tallest Agave and is native only to a small area Oaxaca, Mexico.  There it lives in hot, dry scrubland.  Overall height in the wild gets to twenty feet, although plants in cultivation often flower at a height of about ten feet.  Leaves are blue-green in color, very fleshy and stiff, and pointed upwards.  They are also thick and firm with small spines along their margins.  When old dead leaves are cleaned from the trunk, it is very cool looking.  When this species flowers, a huge upright flower up to twenty feet emerges.  Initially there are white flowers and these are followed by a large number of "bubils" that fall to the ground and are the means of propagation.  The mother plant then dies.  Cold tolerance from reports is about 22 degrees F.  It is a full sun plant.  The 15g plants on sale are ten years old and, if anything, bigger than shown here.  Garden photo by Garden World Images website.

The plants I'm showing here don't make fruit but are very pretty.  Mature height should be about 8 feet.  Like most Bananas, it does sucker and the fruiting stalk is replaced by a new stalk.  It has green leaves with attractive purple splotches and maroon underside.  See photos below.  It'd want full sun and should be cold tolerant well into the mid-twenties F.  We only have smaller sizes available currently.  BTW, they are near impossible to find.  I have no mature photos to show you but am showing a larger plant we previously had at the Nursery.

PANDANUS FURCATUS

VERY COLD HARDY SPECIES OF PANDANUS
EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND SCREW

Pandanus are a Monocot with about 750 species worldwide.  Many species are native to Madagascar.  They are similar to palm trees but are not true palms.  Many species produce prominent roots from the trunk to help support the tree.  Pandanus furcatus is known to be quite cold hardy as it is native to northern India and Nepal (as well of nearby other areas).  All Pandanus come from the Old World.  P. furcatus can get quite tall, even over 40 feet in many decades.  Leaves have spiny margins.  It can tolerate a freeze.  Be aware that most species do not tolerate a freeze but this one and P. utilis do.  The only other species of Pandanus we grow is P. utilus.  Both are extremely difficult to find for sale.  We recently obtained some smaller furcatus plants from a private grower.  This is the first time we have had them for over a decade.

PANDANUS UTILUS
THE SCREW PINE
ONE OF THE FEW PANDANUS GOOD FOR THIS AREA

Pandanus utilus is called the Screw Pine but is not a pine at all.  It's actually a monocot (similar to palms) and native to Madagascar, the Mauritius Islands and some surrounding areas.  It gets it's name by the arrangement of leaves which come off the trunk in spiraling fashion, always the same direction.  Thus, the leaves spin off at different angles in a swirl.  Leaves are rather thin and have spines along the margins.  The trunk on this species is quite amazing.  It forms aerial roots (sausage like) that come to the ground for stability.  Trunks fork and form multiple heads of leaves.  Trunks can also be quite smooth, almost snakeskin-like.  It has large fruit clusters that are bigger than grenades.  But, it is a dioecious species and you need a male and female plant to set viable seeds.  Leaf color is green with a sheen of blue.  Overall height is variable, but old specimens can easily be over thirty feet tall with lots of branches.  It takes sun or part sun.  Cold tolerance is probably in the mid-twenties F.  We are offering only a few 5g as shown that we have in stock.  This is an extremely rare species to find for sale.

SUPER RARE AND HARD TO FIND SPECIES WITH HUGE LEAVES
TOLERATES COASTAL SUN AND IS VERY IMPRESSIVE

This unusual and very difficult to find species of Philodendron is known for it's absolute huge leaves that can be six feet of more in length.  It has green leaves and thick strong stems.  It can grow free standing or will climb to some extent.  Or, trunks can crawl along the ground.  It tolerates full coastal sun or strong filtered light.  We've been told that this species can tolerate a freeze although little is known of its absolute cold tolerance.  Its leaves are much large than Philodendron selloum Supply is limited as we only have them available every several years.

FROM CALIFORNIA BOTANICAL GARDEN

Years ago we obtained some Philodendron cuttings from a well known CA Botanical Garden.  This included about eight different types.  They were from wild collected plants originally and no identification was made.  We've propagated all of them.  Most are in 2 gallon pots.  These are also mostly climbing types of Philodendron.  Plant them adjacent to a tree trunk, post or fence - they'll attach and support themselves.  Below I'm showing several different types or species.  They are good growers and survive our local weather in shade quite well.  Drop in to check them out.  All are on offered at a sale price.  Examples are given below.

PHILODENDRON SELLOUM

VERY LARGE SPLIT LEAF PHILODENDRON
ALONG THE COAST FOR SUN OR SHADE

This is an interesting type of Philodendron for those of you who like big leafed, climbing species.  It's been available for many decades, but more recently is hard to find.  It can develop three foot leaves with a stem that is 4 to 5 inches thick.  It likes to climb and will go slowly up a trunked palm tree.  In my garden, I have several that have ten foot long trunks.  They show interesting old leaf base scars and have lots of aerial roots.  As mentioned, this is a climbing species.  If you plant them where there’s nothing to hang onto they will do fine but produce a shorter, fat trunk for support.  They take coastal full or part day sun.  Far inland areas should give it a few hours of sun or strong filtered light.  They can be grown as a houseplant.  Their cold hardiness is down to at least the mid to low 20’s F.  The plant shown below was grown in full sun so it's more of a lime green.  In shade they are more of a dark green.  Very limited supply currently.

PLUMERIA TREES
FRAGRANT BLOSSOMS
AN ASSORTMENT OF COLOR COMBINATIONS AND SIZES

Most people are familiar with Plumeria.  They are grown throughout the world.  The main issue is winter cold.  All want sun.  They can usually recover from freeze damage the next year.  But, significant cold kills them.  There are probably a hundred different hybrids made to show off an assortment of color combinations.  We do have available many very nice, outdoor grown and well rooted plants with pink, red, yellow, and other colors.  Photos below are of Plumeria and flowers at the nursery.  We get our plants propagated by a local private Plumria enthusiast with only the best colors and hybrids.  Availability is limited and changes quickly.

PONY TAIL PALM - ELEPHANT FOOT PALM
BECAURNIA RECURVATA

BIZARRE AND SWOLLEN BASE
MEDIUM SIZED MATURE - LOVES SUN

This is a popular succulent plant that is certainly not a true palm.  Yet, all of its common names call it one.  Native to Mexico, this plant typically gets ten to fifteen feet tall with a peculiar, expanded caudex at the base and a crown of strap like leaves.  These emerge upward and then hang down in a fountain fashion.  The most amazing thing about this species is the bizarre forms it can take on.  It can have multiple heads of leaves, multiple emerging trunks from the caudex base and the size of the base can get massive.  I've seen photos of small cars parked on top of the base of this species. It is a sun loving species and cold hardy somewhere into the mid-twenties F.  Cold may damage the leaves but usually plants come back the following season.

STAGHORN FERN - PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM
TYPE OF EPIPHYTIC FERN
GROW IN A BASKET, MOUNT IT ON WOOD OR GROW IT IN A TREE

Staghorn Ferns and the group of Platycereium come from various tropical area of both the New World and Old World.  Unlike most other ferns, this group grows epiphytically in trees - on branches and trunks.  They do not harm the tree.  This species has antler-like fronds or leaves and forms a shield near its base.  The shield is green and fairly smooth.  Very old plants become huge clusters or clumps in a tree.  Plants can be grown in a basket, on a wooden plank or in a tree.  They are not hard to grow.  You just don't let them go overly dry.  We have various sizes at times and the one shown below is a well developed cluster.  We are hoping to offer Moosehorn Ferns for this sale but are awaiting their arrival.

THE TRAVELER PALM
RAVENALA MADAGASCARENSIS

BANANA-LIKE TREE IN ONE PLANE
IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND LATELY

Most people are fascinated by this large, banana-like plant that has wide, long and soft leaves that tower overhead.  It is native to Madagascar.  The fact the leaves of the Traveler Palm are all aligned in one plane fascinates viewers. But I must first mention that this species is not a palm at all!  Rather, it is part of the Bird of Paradise family.  It got its common name of "Traveler Palm" (aka Traveller Palm) because the leaf bases would catch and hold water for thirsty travelers.  Compared to the Giant Bird of Paradise, it's so much nicer.  It's less maintenance, is not invasive and prettier.  But, the downside is that Ravenala madagascarensis doesn't survive a freeze.  Literally, a freeze will kill it overnight.  This is the first time I’ve had any Traveler Palms available for two years.  I’ve had hundreds of calls by people looking for them and there just aren’t any of any size available.   At the time of publishing this we only have a couple left.
