Description

   

Locality:

Ryukyu, Mitsuhama Ito, Satsuma Islands (islands south of Japan).

Cold Hardiness: 

20 F.

Trunk type:

Woody brown trunk composed of old leaf bases; gives the appearance of scales.

Leaf type:

 Pinnate (feather shaped) and keeled (ridge shaped).

Suckering/Solitary:

Solitary or Suckering. Tends to sucker profusely.

Maintenance:

Easy, requires little care.

Speed of growth:

Slow under ideal circumstances a moderate grower.

Height:

6+ feet

Soil requirements:

Quick draining sandy soil.

Sun Requirements:

Full sun - strong filtered light.

General Description:

This is not a palm but rather a cycad.  It is added here because so many people think that it is a palm, but it's not in the same family or group.

Other Notes:

This is actually a cycad and not a palm at all. It is a great plant for sunny dry and compact areas. Does not require much care. Great addition to most gardens.
