Description

   

Locality:

Madagascar

Cold Hardiness: 

26-28s, F.

Trunk type:

Thin to medium (8-10 inches).  Dark brown-tan colored woody trunk.

Leaf type:

Pinnate. The leaves are dark green about 8-10 feet long and are plumose.  They have a little bit of gray color.

Suckering/Solitary:

Solitary, note, there are suckering similar species. 

Maintenance:

Easy, though requires some humidity and good drainage.  Cold will spot the leaves.

Speed of growth:

Medium growth rate.

Height:

20 feet.

Soil requirements:

Sandy with good drainage.

Sun Requirements:

Filtered light inland, full sun along the coast.

General Description:

This is a great palm.  It is very beautiful and can be grown with relative ease in most areas in Southern California.  Large plants are around in Southern California. 

Other Notes:

Variety "monticola" is a totally different palm that is huskier, more cold hardy, and has much longer leaves and stature.  This variety is very desirable.  The picture shown is Ravenea madagascarensis variety monticola
